As he was purchasing it, the salesgirl said, “Uh, look, the game box haven’t even been opened yet. That might be worth some money. ”Peter examined the box, and, sure enough, it was completely covered in factory-sealed plastic. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish”, I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids(眼皮) and the sun huts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them..When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need tofish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. After entering the business world, the author found _________.A. it easy to think like a customerB. his father’s fishing advice inspiringC. his first boss’s sales ideas reasonableD. it difficult to sell services to poor people35. This passage most likely comes from _________.A. a fishing guideB. a popular sales bookC. a novel on childhoodD. a millionaire’s biographyCDaniel Anderson, a famous psychologist, belie ves it’s important to distinguish television’s influences on children from those of the family. We tend to blame TV, he says, for problems it doesn’t really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children’s minds. One traditional belief about televisi on is that it reduces a child’s ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images (影像). Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn’t take the place of reading for most children; it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents’ educational background have a stronger influence on a child’s reading. “A child’s reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads.” Anderson says.Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television-watching lowers IQ (智商) scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it’s the other way around. “If you’re smart young, you’ll watch less TV when you’re older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers. For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.36. By watching TV, children learn _________.A. images through wordsB. more than explicit meaningsC. more about images than wordsD. littl e about people’s psychology37. An educational program is best watched by a child _________.A. on his ownB. with other kidsC. with his parentsD. with his teachers38. Which of the following is most related to children’s reading ability?A. Radio-listeningB. Television-watchingC. Parents’ reading listD. Parents’ educational background39. Anderson believed that _________.A. the more a child watches TV, the smarter he isB. the younger a child is, the more he watches TVC. the smarter a child is, the less likely he gets addicted to TVD. the less a child watches TV, the better he performs at school40. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To advise on the educational use of TV.B. To describe TV’s harmful effects on children.DIt was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique characteristics. In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain. And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class. But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found 90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a love of stratification. One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was viewed as the most attractive voice, Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'. The accents placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional(地区的)city accents. These accents were seen as 'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice. In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed. However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may 'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.41. A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.A. it is time to end class distinctionB. most people belong to middle classC. it is easy to recognize a person’s classD. people regard themselves socially different42. The word stratification in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.A. varietyB. authorityC. divisionD. qualification43. The study in the US showed that BBC English was regarded as _________.A. regionalB. educatedC. prejudicedD. unattractive44. British attitudes towards accent _________.A. have a long traditionB. are based on regional statusC. are shared by the AmericansD. have changed in recent years45. What is the main idea of the passage?A. The middle class is expandingB. A person’s accent reflects his classC. Class is a key part of British societyD. Each class has unique characteristics.信息匹配(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)请阅读下列应用文及相关信息,并按照要求匹配信息。

AYou all know what a sandwich is. A sandwich consists of two pieces of bread with all kinds of stuff sandwiched in between. That visual should give you an idea of what the “sandwich generation” is. It refers to people who are taking care of their own families as well as their aging parents. The “sandwichers” are squeezed in between generations, just like baloney is squeezed between two pieces of bread, and are additionally squeezed for time, money and patience and sometimes hard-pressed to keep their sanity. Often they are operating on a wing and a prayer as they are stretched thin. The sandwich generation consists primarily of women in the 45-to-56-year-old age range who are multi-tasking, and sometimes not very well but they don’t have a choi ce, and charged with taking care of their parents as well as their own children. Often the elderly parents are in poor health and this must be dealt with. These women spend a lot of money on their kids and a lot of time taking care of their parents.A study done by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) concluded that 44 percent of 45-to-55-year-olds have one child under the age of 21 still living with them and at least one living parent. The “sandwichers” are not a new phenomenon, although ther e may be more people in this situation than ever before because people (their parents) are living longer.Historically, children and grandchildren have always helped care for the elderly people in their family. Often several generations lived together in the same home, although that practice is not common nowadays.Another interesting fact about those in the “sandwich generation” is that they may not have any siblings (兄弟姐妹), because families got smaller in the last century. Alternatively, the “sandwichers” may only have one sibling, who doesn’t live near so the obligation of taking care of elderly parents is on one child rather than spread out among a whole passel (一大群) of kids, who shared the responsibility as it once was shared.21. The “sandwich generation” refers to those who ______.A. work while caring for their familiesB. have both parents and children to care forC. have to care for their parents and themselvesD. have more family burdens to shoulder22. We can infer from the third paragraph that ______.A. the “sandwich generation” has more responsibilities to shoulderB. the “sandwich generation” stays at home most of the timeC. the “sandwich generation” is likely to be in poor healthD. men don’t belong to the “sandwich generation”23. There are more “sandwichers” today because ______.A. their parents tend to live with themB. their parents are in poor healthC. their parents live longerD. families are becoming bigger24. Who usually care for the elderly people in a family today according to the text?A. Chidren of the “sandwichers”.B. Grandchildren in the family.C. The whole family.D. The “sandwichers”.25. The last paragraph implies that ______.A. the responsibility of caring for the parents is usually shared among siblingsB. life is especially hard for the “sandwichers” without any siblingsC. caring for aging parents is no longer a problem for the “sandwichers” todayD. aged parents don’t live together with their childrenBGood comprehension is crucial — not only for school — but for everyday activities like reading a newspaper and understanding the directions on a medicine bottle. Like most skills, comprehension requires frequent practice and concentration. By mastering a few techniques, you can improve your ability to understand important information and recall it when necessary.Know your reading purpose. This will help you focus your mind on the mater ial. If you’re reading for information, concentrate on the facts. If you’re reading fiction, try to remember the character names. These strategies will help you become an active reader. Passive readers aren’t engaged in the process and will not comprehend the material effectively.Activate prior knowledge. Before reading a book, read the inside of the jacket cover (书皮保护套), which gives a general overview of the characters, plot and setting. Ask yourself if you have ever been to the places mentioned or found yourself in the similar situations to those outlined in the overview. Making a connection to the text based on experience will help you better comprehend what you are reading.Ask questions as you read, and then focus on finding the answers. This will help you concentrate on the material in the book. If you’re reading a textbook, use chapter headings as a guide to direct your reading as you look for the information that applies specifically to that topic.Apply specific strategies while reading. When reading a novel, make predictions about what may happen based on what you’ve already read combined with your own personal experience. Summarize chapters in your own words or in writing. This enables you to retain details more effectively.Use the visual aids provided in books. Read captions (说明文字) and study pictures, maps and charts. Using visual clues will help you recall critical information necessary for tests, book reports, essays and research papers.Build your vocabulary. Every time you read, you will likely encounter unfamiliar words. Instead of skipping over them, look them up or write them down to look up later. Increasing your vocabulary makes you a stronger reader and more apt to read increasingly complex texts, which will improve your comprehension skills.31. What’s the purpose of the text?A. To help you choose good books.B. To offer you some comprehension techniques.C. To encourage you to do more reading.D. To talk about how to improve your language study.32. By saying “Activate prior knowledge”, the author probably sugges ts that ______.A. you make use of experienceB. you focus on key pointsC. you put knowledge into practiceD. you choose good books33. You don’t need to worry about being turned down by your insurance company due to age or health reasons. Secondly, the premium rates(保险费率) are a lot cheaper when you come in at a younger age,” says Goh.Her advice to Nikki Goh, 24, is simple. “In addition to the life insurance policy that she owns now, Nikki should also start putting aside a small amount to buy a medical insurance plan. She clearly understands the importance of such a protection and buying a medical insurance plan now at her age will make it more affordable.”She says a medical insurance plan like PRUhealth, which Prudential Assurance Malaysia Berhad recently launched, would be ideal for Nikki who takes good care of her health, as it has an extra bonus annually as long as she does not make any medical claims from her policy during a year. The bonus amount which Nikki will receive will depend on the plan that she has selec ted. “Besides rewarding customers when they are healthy, PRUhealth also helps old people take care of their medical bills when they need it most,” she says. For 26-year-old Charles Chen, Goh suggests that apart from the need to cut down on his smoking, it is important that he should review his existing life and medical insurance coverage periodically. “Charles is lucky to have parents who have bought him insurance plans. As he grows older and earns more, and his needs change, perhaps like getting married or having children, he will have to review and upgrade his insurance plans accordingly. For now, he needs to check if he is sufficiently covered under his existing medical insurance plan. With healthcare costs continuing to outpace general inflation rate (通货膨胀率), chances are that the plan he bought years ago is unlikely to be enough to meet future needs,” she points out.36. Which of the following is good advice from Goh Suet Peng?A. To go to the gym regularly.B. To take some health supplements regularly.C. To get ourselves insured early.D. To save some money for future use.37. According to Goh Suet Peng, Nikki should .A. take good care of her healthB. buy another life insuranceC. pay her medical billsD. buy a medical insurance plan38. The problem Charles Chen may run into is that .A. his parents have bought him the wrong insurance planB. he cannot lead a relatively healthy life under the planC. maybe the plan he has bought cannot meet his future needsD. healthcare may cost beyond his salary in the futureDIt may surprise bookworms, but apparently masterpieces such as Jane Eyre are lacking in something — sound effects. An electronic-book firm is adding background noises and music to the works of Charlotte Bronte, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and William Shakespeare in the hope of attracting younger readers. In one example, a description of rain lashing against a window in a Sherlock Holmes story will be “enhanced” with matching noises. The first multimedia e-books — with sounds to accompany novels — will be available this Friday in the UK. The Booktrack releases are available to iPad users, with other tablet computer versions to follow. The concept is already in use in the U.S., where the classics come with added sound effects. Readers for example can hear the china cups chinking in Mr. Darcy’s garden as they read Pride And Prejudice.A story by Booker Prize winner Salman Rushdie will be released later in the year with a specially crafted orchestral score. Rushdie’s story In The South will be released with a soundtrack provided by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The Power Of Six by Pittacus Lore, a novel for young adults, is one of the first to be tested with a soundtrack which builds in suspense in keeping with the plot. It works by timing the speed of each reader and the software measures the “turning” of a page and moves the music or sounds along accordingly. It has been created by Booktrack which synchronizes (使同步) music to each novel. It is funded by Peter Thiel, a co-founder of PayPal.Mr. Thiel said, “It’s always exciting to witness the creation of a new form of media. The technology promises to captivate readers in a different way.”However, they have been greeted with horror by traditionalists, who say the technology takes away the pleasure of having one’s imagination stimulated by a story. They also raise the prospect (预期) of having to ask an overly eager reader to turn their book down. David Nicholls, whose bestseller One Day was recently turned into a film starring Anne Hathaway, said, “This sounds like the opposite of reading. It would be a distraction.”41. What’s the purpose of the electronic-book firm adding sound effects to masterpieces?A. To add some creative factors to the e-books.B. To arouse interest of the readers.C. Pessimistic.45. is/are valued most greatly during the reading process according to traditionalists.A. StrategiesB. ImaginationC. MaterialsD. Technology七选五Well-done on an ExamDo not underestimate the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination. The closer you are to the exam, the more chance you have of storing and attaining key information. But do not overdo it. __46__ An effective daily routine can help you through an exam period, so in the days leading up to your first exam, get into the habit of being up and read to work. It can be a shock to the system after months of working to your own timetable to be mentally alert at that time if you have not prepared for it.On the day of the exam, have a good breakfast, pack everything you need ( pens, pencils, erasers, etc), then make your way to the examination hall in good time. __47__Once in your seat, simply pause for a few seconds and collect your thoughts. Close your eyes and take in a few slow, deep breaths to help you relax. When you turn over the test paper, spend a short period reading through all the instructions and questions, paying particular attention to key verbs such as “discuss”, “compare” and “evaluate”. __48__It is always wise to allow 10 minutes at the end of the exam to give yourself time to go back over your answers. Once you have selected the questions you wish to tackle, begin by attempting the one you think is your strongest. It will give you more confidence when you see a well-answered question down on paper. Also remember to write clearly, and do not be afraid to express the unexpected: after all, examiners can get very bored marking stereotypical(模式化的) answers.__49__ If you need something else to focus on to help you collect your thoughts, choose a fixture inthe room, such as the ceiling or anything else that will not allow you to be distracted. Finally, once you have finished, never hang around outside afterwards to attend the discussion by other students.__50__A. Try not to look at those around you, or at the clock.B. When you get home, read the examination paper through and look up the other words you didn’t understand.C. Sleep, exercise and relaxation are all just as important.D. Map out a quick plan of points you wish to make and how much time you should spend on each question.E. Go and have a well-earned rest---then prepare the next exam.F. Do not arrive too early, though, as other people’s anxiety can be contagious(传染性的),and you may suffer from undue panic.G. If possible, you can arrive early and communicate with those worried students and help them overcome their anxiety.第二节完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从36~55各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并将答案涂在答题卡上。
