2. The extraordinary price paid for the last Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in private hands
has resulted in a fevered guess at the buyer ﹣but so far the new owner’s identity is
________.
Christie’s, the auction (拍卖)house that sold “Salvator Mundi” in New York on Wednesday, has remained silent about who paid ﹩450m for the 500﹣year﹣old work ﹣ a price that set a world auction record. With the pool of possible buyers limited to billionaires and a very few institutions, some in the art world are trying to narrow it down to a region or nationality.
Thomas Seydoux, an art adviser and former head of Impressionist and Modem Art at Christie’s,suspects that the bidder is “new money”,because the bidding went up in “wild increases” ﹣ at one stage jumping from 370m to 400m. He guessed that the buyer might be a billionaire from Asia, based on current trends in the world of fine art auctions.
Others have suggested a Gulf royal or billionaire ﹣ perhaps from Qatar, which has lavishly (大量地) collected art, or Abu Dhabi, which has just opened a branch of the Louvre museum. The Abu Dhabi branch has a Leonardo’s pa inting, “La belle ferronniere”, on loan from the Louvre in Paris but lacks its own.
“Salvator Mundi” has a troubled history. It was sold for £ 45 at Sotheby’s in London in 1958, when it was thought to 6 a copy, but by 2011 it had been accepted as a work entirely by Leonardo, when it was included in an exhibition at the National Gallery in London. It was then reportedly bought for 75m﹣ 80m by art adviser Yves Bouvier, who sold it to Russian collector Dmitry Rybolovlev for ﹩127.5m.
Mr Rybolovlev said, “Thanks to the professionalism and expertise of Christie’s, the record
﹣breaking sale of Da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ has helped bring back some of the value of the
collection.”
(1)What does the underlined word “inscrutable” mean?________
A.available.
B.unknown.
C.uncontroversial.
D.determined.
(2)What might Thomas Seydoux’s Asian “new money” be based on?________
A.The number of wealthy people in Asia.
B.The trend of wealthy people collecting art.
C.The reasonable way the buyer bid for the painting.
D.The aggressive way the bidder drove up the price.
(3)What did Rybolovlev’s words suggest?________
A.The sale of the painting reflected its value.
B.He regretted having possessed the painting.
C.The high bid for the painting was ridiculous.
D.Christie’s taught us how to appreciate the painting.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?________
A.Troubled History of “Salvator Mundi”.
B.Hunt for New Master of Record﹣breaking Da Vinci.

(1)B 词义猜测题.根据第一段第一句The extraordinary price paid for the last Leonardo da Vinci’s painting in private hands has resulted in a fevered guess at the buyer可知,达芬奇的最后被拍卖出天价的绘画作品被收藏在私人买家手里,而买家真实身份备受热烈猜议及第二段…has remained silent about who paid ﹩450m for the 500﹣year﹣old work 可知拍卖方对于透漏买家身份一事闭口不谈可知,到目前为止,买家的真实身份尚未被知晓,故B符合原文理解.A.available 有空的,可得到的.C. uncontroversial 非

故选A.

3. The first truly autonomous cars ﹣ vehicles that drive down the streets with no one behind the wheel ﹣ have finally arrived.
Waymo, which began life as Google’s self﹣driving car project, announced that it had let its driverless cars loose in parts of Phoenix, Arizona, with nobody in the front seats to take over in case of emergency. Members of the public taking part in a Waymo trial in the desert city in the south﹣west US will be able to order the vehicles to come through an app “in the next few months”, the group said.
Potentially one of the most revolutionary (革命性的) new technologies, as well as one of the most advertised, driverless cars have been at the centre of a race between big automakers and technology companies. But while a number of groups are testing the technology on the streets with back﹣up drivers behind the wheel, most believe the approach of full autonomy is at least two years away.
Google shocked the auto industry when it first showed a basic version of its driverless technology seven years ago, and it then invested more than ﹩l bn in autonomous vehicle research.
Rivals (竞争对手) admit it still has a technology lead, though skeptics question whether the artificial intelligence is good enough to respond to the many unforeseen events that could occur on the road.
Waymo believes it is the first company to reach a standard known in the driverless car world as level 4, meaning its cars can drive under full autonomy in preset areas that have been carefully mapped out and tested. Uber, General Motors, Aptiv PLC, BMW and others have been conducting testing to reach level 4, but all of them still keep a human in the driver’s seat.
(1)What should people do in the driverless car test?________
A.Take over in an emergency.
B.Call for a car without an app.
C.Let the car operate in full autonomy.
D.Test the car in a deserted place.
(2)The third paragraph may be used to show________.
A.Google’s driverless technology is really advanced.
B.Way mo will be widely acknowledged two years later.
C.driverless cars will damage the entire automobile market.
D.the technology of driverless cars is developing too fast.
(3)Why is Waymo confident about trying out its first driverless cars?________
A.Because it already invented a basic version.
B.Because it has a technology lead in this area.
C.Because it has reached full, level 4 autonomy.
D.Because its cars can drive wherever a person likes.
(4)What’s the author’s attitude towards the self﹣driving car?________
A.Supportive.
B.Opposed.
C.Skeptical.
D.Objective.

4. Asia’s mountain glaciers (冰川) will lose at least a third of their mass through global warming by the century’s end, with serious consequences for millions of people who rely on them for fresh water, researchers have said. The high mountains of Asia consist of a geographical region surrounding the Tibetan Plateau, holding the biggest store of frozen water outside the poles. It feeds many of the world’s great rivers, including the
Ganges, the Indus and the Yarlung Zangbo River, on which hundreds of millions of people depend.
Nearly 200 nations adopted the Paris Agreement in 2015, which sets the goal of limiting warming to a level of “well below” 2°C,while “pursuing efforts” to achieve a lower ceiling of 1.5°C.Earth’s surface has already warmed by about 1°C, according to scientists.
The Asian high mountains, the new study said, were already warming more rapidly than the global average. A global temperature rise of 1.5°C would mean an average increase in
the region of about 2.1°C, with differences between mountain ranges ﹣ all of which will warm by more than 1.5°C. The Hindu Kush mountain range would warm by about 2.3°C and the eastern Himalaya Mountains by 1.9°C, the study forecast.
“Even if temperatures stabilize at their current level,(glacier) mass loss will continue for decades to come, ” the researchers added.“For the high mountain glaciers to survive, it is vital to reduce the global temperature increase to the lowest possible level.”
A study in July in the journal Nature Climate Change said there was only a 5% chance of holding global warming under 2°C. For 1.5°C, the chance was about 1%. On current trends, some experts project Earth is on track to warm by about 3°C.
(1)What is stressed about Asia’s mountain glaciers in the first paragraph?________
A.The reason for its melting.
B.Its importance.
C.Its geographical condition.
D.The consequences caused by its decrease.
(2)What do we know about the temperature on the earth’s surface?________
A.It keeps up its normal level.
B.It has risen too much since the Paris Agreement was made.
C.It is far below the level that the Paris Agreement demands.
D.It is near the lower ceiling that the Paris Agreement demands.
(3)How may we guarantee these glaciers, continued existence, according to researchers?________
A.Hold global warming under 2°C.
B.Try to save water as much as we can.
C.Keep global temperature increase to a minimum.
D.Make the global temperature stable at its current level.
(4)How does the author develop the passage?________
