Step1: Revision and leading-in Greet the class as usual. Show some pictures and ask students to make sentences with when/while. The teacher can ask the question : what was he/she doing when/while…?to help. Step 2 Practice Make a survey: Have students to read and remember the sentences of Grammar Focus by themselves, and then have them work in groups to sum up the usage of the past progressive tense and adverbial clauses with when and while. Have students make up their own conversations with their partners with their partners with the target language. Have some pairs act out their conversations in class. Step 4 Writing Practice Call one student to read the example in 4a, ask them to understand the difference between two sentences. Ask students to write sentences with both when and while

individually. Then call several students to report their sentences. Step 5 Reading and Writing Tell students that the passage in 4b is a story. Ask students to read the story in 4b alone and fill in the blanks. Check the answers with students. Step 6 Reading Practice Pre-reading: tell students that Ben’s family and his neighbors had an unforgettale experience. Then show the picture in 3a to students, ask them to describe what happened. While-reading: First, ask students to read the questions in 3a, then read the passage quickly and find the answers to the questions. Have students read the sentences in 3b. then ask them to scan the passage and complete the sentences using information from the passage. Check the answers. Ask students to find out some key language points and the teacher helps students explain them. After-reading: T: what do you learn from this story? Then have students say their opinions. Have them read the questions in 3c, and then ask them to discuss the questions in groups. Choose one student in each group to report their opinions. Step 7 Summary and Homework Sum up the key phrases and important sentences in the passage. Ask students to write storys to talk about their unforgettable experience. Step 8 Blackboard design
