We feel that thereare many disadvantages in streaming (把---按能力分班) pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both bright and not-so-bright children. After all, it can be very discouraging to be at the bottomof the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellec tual ability. This is only one of their total personalities. We are concerned to develop the ability of all our pupils into the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work ingroups:this gives them opportunities to learn to co-operate, to share and to develop2leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think,to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupil learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individ ual tasks and assignment, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the libraries, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does no matter what age this child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.1.In this passage the author's attitude towards "mixed-ability teaching" is( C ).A. These cars will float along never touching the ground, and therefore will have no need for wheels.Annoying highway vibrations, caused by the rotations of the disc-and-tire wheels, will be things of the past. The coming highway passenger cars will literally fly above the road, supported on columns of air compressed by turbine-driven fans. The car without wheels has been called a "flying car", and, in a sense, that's just what it is;however, it will not back out of the family garage, start down the street, and then suddenly go quickly upward heading for some distant point. On the contrary, to avoid problems in aerial navigation, the wheelless vehicle probably will travel no more than three inches above road surface. It will travel over fairly rough road and even over smooth water! The inevitable problems of maritime regulations, severe weather conditions, and running out of fuel in remote areas all will require new concepts of operation, servicing, and vehicle regulation.1.The author believes that cars of the future CA. will be replaced by airplanesB. will have wheels unlike those of todayC. will use columns of air instead of wheelsD.will use wheels without tires2.Which of the following is true concerning the new car? I knew that I would not be content to simply end my educational career with senior high school and enter theworking world. I truly felt a need to continue learning in order to get a better understanding of the world around me. Those who survived began sowing in the first spring. All summer long they waited for the harvests with great anxiety, knowing that their lives and the future of the colony depended on the coming harvest. But news about one person actually doing harm to another changes our estimate of other people for the worse."In an early experiment in 1968, Dr. Hornstein and his associates, who had been dropping wallets (钱包) for two years to test the honesty of people, discovered that on June 4, 1968, not one wallet was returned."That was the night Robert F. Kennedy was shot," he recalled. "Strangers suddenly seemed dangerous, and nobody wanted to return a lost wallet to a stranger."But good news on the other hand, lifts us up," he stressed, citing the date of July 4, 1976, America's Bicentennial (两百年的) celebration. "On that day, we all felt safe and good. Being American was the thing. We all felt as if we all belonged together."Recent tests support these conclusions. In one experiment, 60 subjects were exposed to good news, bad news or music. Then they were told to play a game with a non-existent person supposedly in another room. It was a game of choice that emphasized cooperation or competition. After hearing good news, the overwhelming majority, 91 percent, played cooperatively. But after hearing bad news, competitive responses were over three times as high – up to 28 percent, from 9 percent."If we watch television and see a lot of blood," said Dr. Hornstein, "we're probably assuming that the world is a dirtier place than we assumed before we saw that TV violence. And we'll deal with the next individual we come upon as if he is part of that grim (冷酷的) picture of humanity. After the good news, it's the reverse."26. According to the findings of researchers at Columbia University, when people hear good news, they feel_____B_____.A)happier B)more kindly toward othersC)safer than they really are D)more competitive27. Dr. Harvey Hornstein found that when people hear news about one person actually doing harm to another, they tend to ___A_____.A)regard other people as worse than they really areB)treat total strangers as suspects of cruel crimesC)become hostile towards neighbors and friendsD)think about the common problems facing mankind28. What did Dr. Harvey Hornstein and his associates discover on the night of June 4, 1968? D A)Robert F. Kennedy was shot.B)Their wallets were lost.C)People in America suddenly became dishonest. D)Nobody returned the wallets they dropped.29. We can infer from the passage that on July 4, 1976, most probably ____B____.A)people drank and sang and danced B)lost wallets were returned to their ownersC)everybody wanted to be American D)even criminals were friendly to others30. We can conclude from the passage that ___B_______A) violence on TV leads to more violence on the streetsB) broadcasters should emphasize good news rather than bad newsC) the world is a dirtier place than we assume it to beD) people are more competitive when they are faced with challengesPassage TwoLaura walked towards the man. "It is terribly cold," she said."Colder than ever," the man said. "Now tell me what the hell you want." He stared at Laura for a few seconds, and then grinned. "Maybe you'd like to come inside and warm up.""No. No, I don't want to come in." She took a deep breath. "I just wanted to know if you're interested in selling your dog.""That worthless mutt?" The man pointed to a dog in the yard and laughed for a few seconds, then suddenly stopped. "I was just joking about the worthless part. He's a pretty good dog. Yeah, I might be interested.""Well, he's the kind of dog I'm looking for, and it doesn't look to me like you're too fond of him. Imean he's tied up outside. I don't see any food or water.""You just wait a minute. I take good care of that dog. The guy I got him from said he was a trained guard dog. Trouble is the stupid thing doesn't even bark when strangers come around. But then I guess that wouldn't matter to you. You're probably just looking for a pet, huh?""Yeah, well here's your chance to get rid of him. I'll give you twenty dollars."He snorted (哼着鼻子说). "You expect me to sell a purebred guard dog for twenty dollars? Fifty dollars. That's my price. You bring me fifty dollars, honey, and you got yourself a dog." The man smiled. "Sure you don't want to come in?"Laura shook her head. "I'll be back with the money." Breakfast forgotten, she searched for and found a cash machine four blocks away. I can't afford this, she thought as she punched the numbers into the machine. The dog will need a vet (兽医) and where am I going to get the money for that? Her fears faded (消退) as she pictured the dog, curled up, not outside on the cold, hard ground, but in front of a glowing fireplace. He believed ignorance (无知) to be the enemy of freedom, and he wanted to correct what he considered to be the weaknesses of educational institutions (机构) modeled on European settings. He imagined that an "academical village" around a tree-lined lawn would provide anideal setting in which to pursue higher education. The center of such a village would be a Temple of Knowledge that would house the university library. When Virginia decided to set up a state university in 1818, the retired U.S. President finally was able to devote his talent, time, and energy to creating this new kind of educational institution. By the time he was finished with his design, Jefferson had invented an entirely new American setting for higher education: the college campus. In 1812, Jefferson chose to begin building his "academical village," the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, VA, far away from the city center. He intended this spot to promote learning because it was natural and unspoiled, and far from anything that could distract or harm the students. The University consists of two rows of houses, five on each side, leading to a main building. This main building, the Rotunda, became the most important part of the University, because it contained the library. By focusing his entire institution on the library, instead of around the church, Jefferson revolutionized American university architecture. Jefferson's aim was to create a new institutional form for his ideal educational system, a system he thought should give every citizen the information he needs for carrying out his daily business. This new approach to citizenship and education demanded a new type of university, one where students and professors could coexist and share ideas. He attempted to create this environment by combining the professors' houses and students' classrooms, and linking all the buildings with covered walkways so intellectual exchanges between departments could go on smoothly. Jefferson had also recognized the importance of the students' whole life, and given much thought and planning to the students' dining, living, and exercise facilities (设施).38. Jefferson devoted much of his thought to the education of the common man because he believed ___C____.A)everyone who loved freedom hated ignoranceB)a country could not be strong without educationC)an uneducated man could not gain full freedomD)European educational institutions did not suit America39. Everyone likes a person with good manners but no one likes a person with bad manners. "Yes", you may say , " but what are good manners? How do I know what to do and what not to do?"People all over the world agree that being well-mannered really means being kind and helping others, especially to those older or weaker than ourselves. If you remember this, you will not go very far wrong. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.He never laughs at people when they are in trouble.Instead, he tries to help them. He is always kind, never cruel, either to people or to animals. When people are waiting for a bus, or in a post office, he takes his turn.He does not push to the front of the queue. (B:by accident )Passage 2Paper is one of the most important products ever invented by man. Wide spread use of written language would not have been possible without some cheap and practical material to write on. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated because more books could be printed and distributed. Together with the printing press, paper provided an extremely important way to communicate knowledge. How much paper do you use every year? Probably you cannot answer that question quickly. In 1900 the world's use of paper was about one kilogram for each person a year. Now some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person a year. Countries like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries.Paper, like many other things that we use today, was first made in China. In Egypt and the West, paper was not very commonly used before the year 1400. The Egyptians wrote on a kind of material made of a water plant. Europeans used parchment for many hundreds of years. Parchment was very strong; it was made from the skin of certain young animals. We have learnt of the most important facts of European history from records that were kept on parchment.6. Sometimes people did not remember the space. It was hard to see and read.Later people used a dot to hold the space. Six hundred and three looked like this 6.3.But the dot was hard to see. So people put a circle around it like this 6⊙3.Then people could see the dot. They remembered the space. At last, only the circle around the dot was used. It was like a zero. This is one story of how the zero came to be used. Now zero has many important uses. Zero tells how many. Can you tell some other ways of using zero?11. Long, long ago people didn't know how to ______. (B. write zero )12. Long, long ago if they wrote two hundred-eight, people wrote ______. (B. 2 8 )13. Later ______ was used to mean space. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married six months ago and like many young people these days, they are struggling to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoe making factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420. “I was deeply upset about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course, I should be able to fix the car by myself.”John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money so they can fight the high cost of living. If you want to become a “do-it-yourselfer”, you can go to DIY classes. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite. And the most popular snack is KitKat – fifty are eaten every second in the UK.Chocoholics are people with a chocolate obsession. But are they addicts? Not according to recent research. This shows that chocolate is not as addictive as coffee – in fact, there is no proof that chocolate creates addiction at all. And it’s a lot better for you than we thought. Lucy loves new technology. She owns a games console, an MP3 player, and a mobile phone with a built-in digital camera. David is a teacher. Lucy is his student.Like Lucy, many children grow up using computers almost every day and often know more about technology than adults. Educator Marc Prensky calls children like Lucy “digital natives”. Digital natives can quickly learn how to use new gadgets and new software, while non-digital natives spend a lot of time reading manuals and worrying about computer viruses. In fact, many parents try to save time by asking their children to teach them how to use new technology! The divide between digital natives and non-digital natives can cause problems at school because students and teachers grow up with very different ideas about technology. Many teachers think that playing computer games is a waste of time and that technology has made children unable to concentrate. However, many students think their classes are slow and boring, and want to use computers to study.Prensky believes that digital natives have learned a lot from technology, but that they learn things in a different way. For example, reading a website is different from reading a book, so digital natives are good at finding the information they need and choosing what they want to read. So perhaps teachers need to change the way they teach and use more technology in class – because the number of digital natives will keep increasing!1 David is a digital native.2 Marc Prensky is interested in teaching with technology.3 Digital natives are comfortable using laptops and flash drives.4 Many teachers think computer games are only for having fun or killing time.5 People read books and websites in the same way.Key: FTTTF7.From: U10L2 P153SpanglishIn which city can you read signs like “Aparca your car aquí” or “Cuidado con los pickpockets”? Travelguide investigates.1.2 million Hispanics live in the Big Apple and one in five New Yorkers speaks Spanish at home. In the last ten years, the Hispanic population has grown by 400 000. This reflects the enormous increase in the Hispanic population in the States. There are now 42 million Hispanics resident in the USA, representing 15% of the total population. There is a new language, SPANGLISH – a strange mixture of Spanish and English – which is invading the city. The New York Times recently said that it had become the city’s third official language. Its use is colloquial and often limited to short sentences and signs. Many New Yorkers now wear socketines on their feet, drop something on the carpeta, shop for grocerias and have cornfley(“cornflakes”) for breakfast.Norma Rodríguez, a 45-year-old Cuban living in Washington Heights, says it forms a part of her life now: “Sometimes, you don’t realize that you’re mixing the two languages. You just hear them both all the time and find that you’re inventing new words.” Other people, however, are fighting against this new street language. Bu sinessman Juan Cortés sees it as a sign that the Spanish language is being destroyed. “It’s difficult, but I try not to speak it –it feels vulgar to me.”Meanwhile, a surprising number of academics have spoken in favour of Spanglish. Reading Comprehension (30%)Section A Reading in depth (20%)Passage oneMany teachers believe that the responsibility for learning lies with students. If a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with the information in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or give an examination. (Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams.) The ideal student is considered to be one who is encouraged to learn for the purpose of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Some students may be frustrated with teachers who do not believe it is necessary to grade every assignment. Sometimes homework is returned with short written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, students should learn the material assigned. When research is assigned, the professor expects students to begin and to complete the assignment with minimum instruction. It is the student’s responsibility to find books and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain how a university library works; they expect students , especially graduate students(研究生) , to be able to find what they need in the library.Professor will help students who need it, but prefer that their students not depend on them too much. This is different from teacher-student relationship in other countries. In the United States, professors have other duties in addition to teaching. Often they do some administrative(行政的) work within their departments. In addition, they may be required to write articles and books. Therefore, the time that a professor can spend with a student outside of class is limited. If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either ask a professor for help during officer hours or make an appointment (预约).31.What does the author mean by saying that ― Courses are not designed merely for students to pass exams‖?A) Students study hard only for exams. B) Teachers think it necessary for their students to fail exams.C)Teachers think that the only purpose of studying hard is to pass exams.D) The purpose of designing courses is not only for passing exams.32.According to the 2nd paragraph, students in the United States should __________.A) depend more on themselves than on professors B) plan their time and sequence their workC) always follow the professors’ advice D) find a suitable place for studying33.If students need the advice of their teachers, they should ___________.A) put forward their questions in class B) go to their teachers’ officeC) find some excuses to see teachers at home D) turn to their teachers during the break34. Students who _________ in the United States are considered good ones.A) pay more attention to good scores B) have the desire to learn by themselvesC) are good at learning words by heart D) know much about computers35. American professors may be required to spend more of their time ___________.A) knowing what is on their students’ mind B)helping students finish their assignmentsC) writing articles D) instructing students’ researchPassage twoAll of us communicate with one another nonverbally(不使用语言地), as well as with words. Most of the time we’re not aware that we’re doing it. We gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else’s eyes and look away, change positions in a chair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language. One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another’s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other’s eyes, they become more intimate. Therefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations( 解释), too. Another example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man’s eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be a sign of respect; it can be a challenge to the professor’s authority (权威); it can be something else entirely. The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.Communication between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.36. The main idea of this article is that ____________.A) study of communication through body movement is a new scienceB) body movements are as important as words in communicationC) all of us communicate with one anotherD) eye behavior is the most important part in body language37. What do researchers think of body language?A) Body language can be understood and used by people in communication.B) Body language is more important than spoken language in communication.C) Body language has been discovered in recent years.D) Body language is the study of communication through body movement.38. The word ―intimate‖ in paragraph 2 probably means ___________.A) great B) close C) good D) important39. According to the passage, you make an American person feel uncomfortable, if you _________.A) meet his eyes B) avoid meeting his eyesC) stare into his eyes for one second D) look into his eyes for a long time40. The sentence ―The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture‖ means____________.A) the researchers explain the meaning of a gesture according to the situation in which it is usedB) the researchers believe that one gesture has only one meaningC) the researchers think that one gesture can not be used in different situationsD) the researchers look for patterns in textbooks to explain the meaning of a gestureSection B Fast reading (Skimming and Scanning)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1.For questions 1-7, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage;N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage;NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For questions 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Great are the uses of advertisement! And they certainly are, both to the producer and the buyer. Of course, there is a great deal of truth in the saying that good quality and honest workmanship(手艺,工艺) are the best advertisement. Of course, people know that the producers would have done better if they had used the money for advertising in making better products to sell. But in these days of far-reaching trade, there is no doubt that advertisement is necessary to make the existence of even first-class goods known. And even goods that are already well known must still be advertised. Some producers are aware of the value of it, for, when they try to save money by stopping their advertisements, their sales go down at once. In this age of cut-throat competition, it is the man who shouts the loudest that attracts attention. And the buyers would not know the existence of many good things, if they were not advertised. So even well-established businesses have to spend thousands and thousands a year in advertising, or they will not sell their goods. It is really advertisements that make newspapers possible. Great journals draw the greatest part of their profit from advertisements; and many smaller papers could not exist at all but for the income theyget from this source.Advertisement has now become an art; and there are businesses completely devoting themselves to supplying companies with striking advertisements. But advertising has its misuses. Many advertisements are meant to cheat, and even for a time lie to the public, by promoting worthless goods, or overstating(夸大) the quality of second-rate articles. There is only one consolation(安慰)in this connection. That is, a lying advertisement cannot sell worthless things for long, for the people who buy it once will not buy it a second time. Reading Comprehension (30%)Section A Reading in depthPassage oneResearchers using the most powerful computer in the world said on Tuesday they had found the start of the AIDS virus to be around 1930.Bette Korber and her research fellows at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico used a computer model to figure out the mutations(突变) found in HIV and to estimate when the epidemic started.―We estimate the time of commencing of the HIV-1 main group to be near 1930,‖ they said in a written statement at an international meeting. The first case of infection with HIV ,as it is known today, could have been in a chimp(非洲黑猩猩), which passed it to a human, or in a human being infected with a chimp virus that mutated into HIV in his or her body.― I think it’s more likely it was a human,‖ Korder told newspaper writers. ―It wasn’t for sure the case that a chimp bit a man.‖Allowing for mistakes, the actual start could be anywhere between 1910 and 1950, but Korber told the meeting she did the examination in two ways and both came in very close to 1930.Other scientists believe HIV, which has infected nearly 40 million people worldwide, began after a monkey virus known as SIV jumped from chimps to humans in western central Africa.Korber used a very powerful computer to figure out the rate of change of the virus, known for its quick mutations.Korber used two models—the questionable molecular(分子的)clock, which assumes that genes(基因)in any living being mutate and develop at an even rate; and a method that allowed for different rates of change. Both gave a best estimate of 1930.People in some parts of Africa often look for and kill chimps, and a virus can easily spread during butchering.A second group of HIV that infects people, known as HIV-2, is believed to have started out in a monkey known as a sooty mangabey(白眉猴).31. It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. Y ou need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display(陈列)of a nearby store occurred to me, I stepped in and suggested it to the store-keeper. If something interesting happens, the story of which I think the local Catholic(天主教的)priest(神父)could use, I call him up and tell him about it, though I am not a Catholic myself. One discovery I made about giving away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in a form that is not expected. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the post office manager a thank-you note. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the post office manager appeared in the entrance. He had happened to hear our conversation. ―Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special envelope to your home?‖ I said it was. ―Well, you certainly are going to have a box in th is post office if we have to make one for you. Y ou don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaint s.‖36. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people , though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness. The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situation, for example, a family problem, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year. The third kind of loneliness is the most serious. Unlike the second type, chronic(长期的,慢性的)loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have a problem with socializing and becoming close to others. Unfortunately, many。
