But last summer, Joanna and Henry noticed a change in their older son: suddenly he seemed to be talking far more to his friends than to his parents. “The door to his room is always shut,” Joanna noted.Tina and Mark noticed similar changes in their 14-year-old daughter. “S he used to cuddle up(蜷伏) with me on the sofa and talk,” said Mark. “Now we joke that she does this only when she wants something. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a lit tle girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.”Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list,” said Mich ael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years,” Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.”Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wa ll of silence, parents should create chances to understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young. Another thing parents should remember is that to be a friend, not a manager, with their children is a better way to know them.56. “The door to his room is always shut” suggests that the son ____.A. is always busy with his studiesB. doesn’t want to be disturbedC. keeps himself away from his parentsD. begins to dislike his parents57. What troubles Tina and Mark most is that ____.A. their daughter isn’t as lovely as beforeB. they can’t read their daughter’s mind exactlyC. they don’t know what to say to their daug hterD. their daughter talks with them only when she needs help58. Parents have suitable ways to talk with their teenagers.C. Parents should be patient with their silent teenagers.D. Parents should try to understand their teenagers.BThere are thousands of products of all colors and shapes in a supermarket, making you believe that they are worth a try. How? Packaging(包装) is the silent but persuading salesman. There on the shelves, each bottle, can, box, and jar has been carefully designed and measured to speak to the inner self of the consumer(消费者), so that he is buying not only a product but also his belief in life. Scientists have studied consumer behavior recently and found that the look of the package has a great effect on the “quality” of the product and on how well it sells, because “Consumers generally cannot tell between a product and its package. Many products are packages and many packages are products,” as Louis Cheskin, the first social scientist studying consumers’ feeling for packaging, noticed.Colors are one of the best tools in packaging. Studies of eye movement have shown that colors draw human attention quickly. Take V8 for example. For many years, the bright red color of tomatoes and carrots on the thin bottle makes you feel that it is very good for your body. And the word “green” today can keep food prices going up.Shapes are another attraction. Circles often suggest happiness and peacefulness, because these shapes are pleasing to both the eye and the heart. That’s why the round yellow M signs of McDonald’s are inviting to both young and old. This new consumer response(反应) to the colors and shapes of packages reminds producers and sellers that people buy to satisfy both body and soul.60. According to the passage, ____ seems to be able to persuade a consumer to buy the product.A. the pleasing color of the packageB. the special taste of the productC. the strange shape of the packageD. the belief in the product61. If a package or a product is round in shape, it can ____.A. bring excitement to the consumersB. attract the consumers’ attentionC. catch the eye movement of the consumersD. produce a happy and peaceful feeling62. “And the word ‘green’ today can keep food prices going up.” This sentence suggests that consumers today are ____.A. starting to notice the importance of new foodB. enjoying the beauty of nature more than beforeC. beginning to like green vegetablesD. paying more attention to their health63. It can be inferred from the passage that V8 is a kind of ____.A. vegetable dishB. healthy juiceC. iced drinkD. red vegetableCInternational Studies (BA)Key features●Recognizes the “global community”(国际社会)●Has close connections with practical research●Much of the teaching is done in small discussion groupsAbout the courseThe course gives you chances to know great power politics between nation states. When you take a walk over the great open space of the central square, you will hear seabirds screaming. When you take the tram, suddenly and unexpectedly, you are faced with a calm, shining blue sea. You may notice that people in Helsinki do not rush about as in other cities. Instead, they walk along the roads, politely letting other people by.A usual way to see Helsinki for the first time is to start out by the boats. You will walk by the elderly women selling fish and vegetables in the market square and find yourself in front of a beautiful park. You may enjoy a pleasant walk in the park for a few hours and then take the tram. Trams are the perfect way to get around in Helsinki. Watching the old houses, parks, theatres, churches, shops, restaurants and people in the streets, you may have a slightly sad film feeling to it.The pale summer nights are another wonder in the city. Following the waterfront (滨水区) of the city after sunset, you couldn’t help stopping and listening to the sweet silence, interrupted only by the screaming seabirds and leaving fishing boats. However, in some way, Helsinki is also the most modern city in northern Europe. You will surely want to visit the white Glass Palace, the modern art museum, and all those extremely popular cafes and design stores.68. The best way to see most of Helsinki is to go ____.A. by boatB. by busC. by tramD. on foot70. This passage is most likely to be found in ____A. a story-bookB. a geography textbookC. a research reportD. a travel magazineEThinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical(判断性的) thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes(过程). Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education. The word “critical” here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen——beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning.Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are curious about life and desire to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today’s world: fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure of intelligence(智力), you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein, Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately put Hoffman at ease by saying, “Please go slowly. I don’t understand things quickly.”72. Critical thinking is important to us because if we do not think critically, ____.A. it will be hard for us to think naturally and fastB. we might be controlled by other people’s ideasC. we will follow the ideas of others naturallyD. we might be fooled by other people’s ideas73. If you are a critical thinker, you will ____A. think deeply about different ideasB. trust the reports in the newspapersC. take one view against another viewD. criticize other people for their mistakes74. In the last paragraph, “something new” suggests that ____.A. the smarter you are, the faster you do thingsB. the faster you do things, the smarter you becomeC. speed can improve intelligenceD. intelligence is not decided by speed75. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Thinking and Critical ThinkingB. Understanding Critical ThinkingC. Thinking Is Natural and HumanD.

As their children began moving up through the nation's schools, it became clear that a new class Of academic achievers was emerging Their achievements are reflected in the nation's best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their educations abroad arrived in the US with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. Thy are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college, Asians feel they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree. Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer, An effective measure of parental attention is homework, Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps, Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that breeds success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education Both explanations for academic success worry Asian-Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social isolation(隔绝). Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship61、While making tremendous achievements at college, Asian-American students_____A、feel they are mistreated because of limited knowledge of EnglishB、are afraid that their academic successes bear a strong characterC、still worry about unfair treatment in societyD、general feel it a shame to have to depend on their parents62、What are the major factors that determine the success of Asian-Americans?A、A solid foundation in basic mathematics and Asian cultureB、Hard work and intelligenceC、Hard help and a limited knowledge of EnglishD、Asian culture and the American educational system63、Few Asian-American students major in human science mainly because_____A、their English is not good enoughB、they are afraid they might meet with unfair judgment in these areasC、there is a wide difference between Asian and western culturesD、they know little about American culture and society64、why do the two "explanations"(Line1, para . 3)worry Asian-Americans?A、They are afraid they would again be isolated from American society in generalB、People would think that Asian students rely on their parents for successC、Asian Americans would be a threat to other minoritiesD、American academic achievements have taken on too strong an Asian character65、The author's tone in this passage is_______A、sympatheticB、doubtfulC、criticalD、objectivePassage TwoTelevision has now come to nearly every family. It has become a very Important part in people's life. School children in the US watch TV about 25 hours a week. Some people feel that television is good for children because it helps them learn about their country and the world. With the help of programs of education, children do better in school. Other people feel that there are too many programs about love and crime on TV, and that even programs of education don't help children a lot. Children simply watch too much television, so they don't do a lot of other important things for their education, children of three to six learn to speak their language and talk with people. When they are watching TV, they are only listening to the language , and they aren't talking with anyone. When school children watch TV, they read less, Because of this, they don't learn to read or write quickly at school. All children learn by doing, and they need time to play in order to learn about the world. When they watch TV, they play less. They also have less time to do with their parents and friends, and they have less time for sports. Recently, fifteen families in Denver decided to stop watch TV for a month or more. At first it was difficult, but there were soon a lot of good changes the children read , played, and exercised more, and the family became full of joy. But at the end of the month all the families began to watch TV as much as before. Not one family was able to give up television completely.66、Television_________.A、is not important to school childrenB、helps children learn to speakC、has a lot to do with people's lifeD、must have more programs of education67、Some people think that television is good for children because_____A、some programs help them love their parentsB、the news programs are important to themC、it makes them play less than beforeD、they can learn something good from it68、Some people think that television is bad for children because_______A、there are too many TV programs not good for childrenB、its language is difficult to understandC、it is helpful to their thinking and doingD、their eyes work much every day69、In the US, school children watch TV about ______a dayA、two and a half hoursB、four hoursC、twenty-five hoursD、five hours70、Because school children watch too much TV, they_____A、write more quickly than beforeB、don't learn to read or write as quickly at schoolC、read a lotD、read and write much morePassage ThreeIt was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she was going to work. Her bus had inched(蠕动) along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided to start out half an hour earlier the next day Once inside the lobby, she had to stand at the elevators and wait several minutes before she could get on one going to the sixth floor. When she finally reached the office marked "King Enterprises", she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. Form inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking .At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any attention to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his desk, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.71、Marie felt nervous when she knocked at the door because_______A、it was her first day in a new jobB、she was a little bit late for workC、she was afraid that she had gone to the wrong placeD、there was no answer from inside the office72、Marie could hardly recognize the office she went into as ______A、she had been there only onceB、Mr. King was not in the officeC、Nobody was doing any workD、The office had a new appearance73、The people in the office suddenly started working because______A、they saw a stranger in the officeB、they had finished their morning breakC、no one wanted to talk to MarieD、the boss was about to arrive74、we can infer from the text that the employees of the enterprise______A、would start their work by listening to a jokeB、were cold to new comersC、were always punctual for workD、lacked devoting to the company75、the best title for this text would be ______A、Punctual Like a ClockB、A Cold WelcomeC、An Unpunctual ManagerD、Better Late ThanNever Passage Four Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for foof. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership which is good for both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on the sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together. Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other .this is so in the corals(珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as "dustmen", taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from receiving light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die76、Some birds like to sit on a sheep because_____A、they can eat its parasitesB、they enjoy traveling with the sheepC、they depend on the sheep for existenceD、they find the position most comfortable77、The underlined word "they" in the last sentence of the first paragraph refers to_____A、birds and parasitesB、birds and sheepC、parasites and sheepD、sheep, birds and parasites 78、we learn from the text that corals depend on plants for______79、what does the second paragraph mainly discuss? A、Some plants depend on each other for food B、Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily C、Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence D、Some animals live better together 80、The underlined part "giving in return oxygen" in the second paragraph means ______A、returning back the coral oxygen to the coralB、giving oxygen to the coral as debtsC、giving oxygen to the coral in exchangeD、producing oxygen for the coralⅤ.Close (20points)It is said that most adult second language learners will be lucky to acquire 5,000 words even after several years of study .(81) comparison a native speaker can usually have 20,000 words. This relatively slow progress has (82) to do with aptitude than with exposure. 2004年辽宁高考英语作文The 2004 Liaoning College Entrance Examination English CompositionIn 2004, the Liaoning province in China conducted its annual college entrance examination. One of the subjects included in this exam was English, a subject that is of great importance in the modern world. In this essay, I will discuss the possible topics that students may have encountered in the English composition section of the exam. One of the most common topics for English compositions in exams is the importance of education. Students may have been asked to write about the role of education in society, the benefits of a good education, or the impact of education on one's future prospects. They may have also been asked to write about their own educational experiences or goals.Another possible topic for the English composition section is the environment. Students may have been asked to write about the importance of protecting the environment, the causes of environmental problems, or the role of individuals in combating environmental issues. They may have also been asked to suggestsolutions to environmental problems or describe their own efforts to protect the environment. In addition to education and the environment, students may have been asked to write about topics such as technology, health, or social issues. For example, they may have been asked to write about the impact of technology on society, the importance of maintaining good health, or the challenges facing marginalized communities.Regardless of the specific topic, all English compositions in the 2004 Liaoning college entrance examination would have required students to demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively in written English. This includes organizing their thoughts logically, using appropriate language and vocabulary, and presenting their ideas clearly and persuasively. In conclusion, the English composition section of the 2004 Liaoning college entrance examination would have tested students' ability to express themselves in written English on a variety of topics. This section of the exam would have challenged students to think critically, communicate effectively, and demonstrate their mastery of the English language.。
