Step ⅠRevision
T: Good morning, boys and girls! Let’s begin our class with revision. I’ll ask one student to tell us a sentence with adverbial clauses and his or her desk-mate to tell us what kind of adverbial clauses it is. Are you clear?
Ss: Yes.
S: Whenever we met with difficulties, they came to help us.
S: This is an adverbial clause of time.
S: I found spots of paint everywhere I looked.
S: This is an adverbial clause of place.
S: Please do exactly as your doctor says.
S: This is an adverbial clause of manner.
S: Don’t do anything simply because other people are doing it.
S: This is an adverbial clause of cause.
S: I was without money, so that I couldn’t buy the book.
S: This is an adverbial clause of result.
T: Good! Next, we will prepare for writing.
Step ⅡWriting
1. Discussion
This step is designed to have the students discuss the composition title: “It would be much easier if everyone in th e world just spoke English.” And give some ideas in favor of the statement, and some other ideas against it.
T: In this module, we have learned more about the English language. Some people say: “It would be much easier if everyone in the world just spoke E nglish.” Do you agree? Why / Why not? Please work in groups and make notes about your ideas on Page 52.
Five minutes for the students to discuss.
T: Who would like to present your results of your discussion?
S: I agree with it. 1) It will bring us more friends and will strengthen our friendship. 2) It contributes to the development of global business trades. 3) It makes it more convenient to visit foreign countries.
S: I don’t agree with it. 1) It will result in a simple style of culture. 2) There won’t be any translator and interpreters. Many people will lose jobs.
S: In my opinion, it is good. First, it shortens the distance of people from different cultures and makes communication more convenient. Second, people can understand each other much better so t hat the earth becomes a real “village”. Third, speaking one la nguage will avoid too much trouble. We don’t need translators or interpreters any more.
S: As far as I’m concerned, it destroys cultural diversities and characteristics of different peoples. Then the world had one language and one culture. How monotonous!
T: Well done. Different people have different opinions, and you all state your reasons. Let’s come to the writing. Before writing, let us learn some words and phrases. These words will help you write this composition.
Ask the students to do Activity 3 on Page 52. Then check the answers.
2. Writing
Let the students write a composition within 15 minutes.
T: Please begin to write this composition, and you’re given 15 minutes to finish it.
It would be much easier if everyone in the world just spoke English.
Sample Ⅰ:
A great many people hope that all the people will speak English some day. In their view, to speak a single language does much good.
Firstly, it will contribute to the development of global trade. Generally speaking, highly successful corporations are based on good communication. If people from all over the world speak English, they can express their creative ideas freely, which will make the cooperation and communication much easier.
Secondly, it promotes the spread of cultural productions. A large number of works appear every year, with different cultural backgrounds. People from different countries are not able to make sense of all of them very well. If the works are written in English, they can spread more widely.
In addition, it will make it more convenient for people to visit foreign countries as the problem of communication disappears.
However, there are also people who disagree with that. One of the reasons is that speaking the same language will result in a simple style of culture.
In my opinion, to speak English has more advantages than disadvantages. We should manage to make it come true.
Sample Ⅱ:
In modern times, English is the most widely spoken language all over the world. In total, there are more than 42 countries where the majority of people speak English. Therefore, some people, especially some English-speaking people, think that if everyone just spoke English in the world, we will live an easier life. In fact, if it is so, it will have a lot of advantages. For example, it will be more convenient for people from different parts of world to communicate with each other.
Although it will do a lot of good, there are still some people who don’t agree with this opinion. They think it is the cultural diversity that is more important. It is necessary for everyone to know about his or her own culture. What’s more, it offers lots of jobs for translators and interpreters. On the other hand, English can’t express all the things in different countries perfectly.
As far as I am concerned, we should learn our mother tongue as well as English in order
to communicate with both native and foreigners. After all, we can keep our culture properly.
Step ⅢSpeaking and writing (P114)
Ask the students to discuss some questions about foreign languages and make notes of what they discussed.
T: In this module, we’ve learnt about the differences of many varieties of English. Now let’s discuss some questions about other foreign languages. Please work in pairs and discuss Activity 15 on Page 114.
After a while, let the students state their opinions.
T: Who would like to tell your ideas?
S: Let me have a try. I have ever read a report about this question. Some experts say it is best to learn another language between 6 and 12 because it’s easier for children to control their pronunciation and remember words.
T: Well done. What about the second question?
S: I think some people choose to learn language in order to know something more about other culture. People can also go abroad and communicate with foreign friends. Of course, some people don’t choose to learn another language. Maybe it’s difficult for them to learn foreign languages.
T: Good. Which foreign languages should they choose to learn?
S: I think it depends. Most people choose to learn English, French and Chinese because these languages are widely used all over the world.
T: Yes. What about the last question?
S: I think more and more people can choose to learn a second language in the future. As society develops, more countries need to communicate with others.
Ask the students to read the start of a letter and notes that follow and then discuss some questions about this letter. At last, finish this letter.
T: Well done. Next let’s read the start of a letter and notes that follow. After reading it, please work in pairs and discuss Activity 17 on Page 114. At the same time, write down some useful notes. After a while, make up a conversation according to your notes.
After a while, let some students state the results of their discussion.
Sample conversation:
S: Why do certain languages become the main ones learnt?
S: I think it’s a must. With the development of the society, people need to communicate
with others. As we all know, there are a lot of languages in the world. If we want to communicate with others, we must have certain languages become the main ones learnt. Of course, we know the most popular is English, and English is taken as a common language in the world.
S: Which language is easier to learn, English or Chinese?
S: It’s not easy to learn a foreign language either English or Chinese. If we want to learn them well, we must work hard and have a strong will, too. But comparing with English, Chinese is a little easy, I think.
S: Should more foreigners learn Chinese and how could it be made easier?
S: I think more foreigners should learn Chinese. Chinese language is a beautiful language and Chinese culture is rich.
S: What is the best way of learning a foreign language?
S: In my opinion, we’d better live in the country if you want to learn the language. For example, you’d better live in England for several years if you learn English.
S: Could another language ever replace English as the language of international communication? How could this happen, and what language could it be?
S: As society develops, English has become more and more important, taken as an international language. More people are interested in English. News and newspapers are often printed in English. So it’s difficult to replace English as the language of international communication.
T: Well done. As last, let’s use the notes and your own ideas to complete the letter.
A sample letter:
Dear Editor,
English is now an international language, spoken by about 750 million people. Anyone born in an English-speaking country acquires this useful language at birth, without the special need to study. But I was alarmed to read in your paper recently that more and more British children are choosing not to learn a foreign language, as they feel it is “unnecessary”. They think their native language is used widely in technology, medicine, music, business, etc. But I think it’s necessary to learn a foreign language for us. In my view, it’s not so important to choose what kind of language to learn. And the best age for children to start learning a language is between six and twelve because they are born curious and at their best ages to acquire good accent. For example, children start learning at seven in Germany, Italy, eight, France, nine, and Britain, eleven. Our government is now trying to
ensure all primary schools offer foreign language lessons. So I think everyone should learn a foreign language in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Lihua
Step ⅣTask

Drinking Gongfu Tea
The tea sets from making gongfu tea are very small. The pottery teapot is as big as a fist and the white and transparent teacups are as small as tiny liqueur glasses. In addition they use a small charcoal stove, a small water kettle and a porcelain base for holding tea sets. Spring or well water is the best for making gongfu tea. Water is boiled with olive stones, which give out high flames and the delicate fragrance of olives. Before making tea, first the teapot is cleaned with boiled water to get rid of the remaining tea flavor in the pot and make better tea with a warm teapot. Then a big handful of tealeaves is put into the teapot till they almost reach its rim.
Ss: gongfu 功夫.
T: Next, read a Chinese article. Pick out words of English origin and translate them into
English.
