Unit 2 Robots李仕才一、阅读理解Captain John Bunch loves to go fishing. In fact, Bunch loves fishing so much that he became a professional fishing guide decades ago and has remained one ever since. There is something, however, that Bunch loves even more. That is his country and the men and women who join the army to protect it. Ever since Bunch met a young soldier in 2005, who wanted to go on a fishing trip before he left the army, the Florida native has offered over 1 200 fishing trips to veterans(退伍军人), with all expenses paid. And Bunch’s efforts to give back to those who have served their nation go even much further. Inspired by that fishing trip 11 years ago, he founded Operation Open Arms, which has since helped nearly 3 400 US troops and given out more than $12 million in direct benefits with his charity. Operation Open Arms also provides free weddings, vacations, and more leisurely activities to veterans, and can rely on a network of over 300 businesses and individual partners to get former soldiers anything they might need upon returning home from army. The former marine’s heartwarming generosity is a result of his own experiences in the military and the pride he has for his country. "I do this because I love my country and I do this because America is the greatest country in the world," he told NBC’s Today Show. Bunch’s unwavering commitment goes so far that he once turned down an invitation from then-President George W. Bush, because he had already scheduled a fishing trip with one of his veterans. Even the military has recognized Bunch’s work of love, and earlier this year honored him and his organization with the Outstanding Civilian Service Award and the Army’s most prestigious civilian award.1.What caused John Bunch to offer free fishing trips to veterans?A.A young soldier’s desire to go on a fishing trip.B. Working as a professional fishing guide.C. Having served in the army.D. Growing up in Florida.2.What is Paragraph Two mainly about?A. The achievements Operation Open Arms has made.B. How Operation Open Arms was founded.C. Activities Captain John Bunch has joined.D. The missions of Operation Open Arms.3.Which can best describe John Bunch’s personality?A. Ambitious and talented.B. Responsible and patient.C. Honest and determined.D. Warm-hearted and generous.4.John Bunch didn’t accept George W. Bush’s invitation because___.A. he thought little of himB. he didn’t want to see himC. he had to take care of businessD. he wanted to stay with veterans【文章大意】钓鱼向导John Bunch不仅自己喜欢钓鱼,而且还为美国退伍军人安排很多次免费的钓鱼之旅,并为他们提供一些其他的福利。

At present we spend a lot of time on our mobile devices these days and automakers have taken notes, rolling out connected cars that make it easy to do nearly everything from your phone.“We all enjoy those kinds of experiences wh ere you want something and by the push of a button everything gets taken care of for you.You don’t have to go here and there and piece a bunch of things together by yourself. ”Ford recently introduced FordPass, a mobile platform that lets car owners access services like finding and paying for a parking spot.“Here’s the details of what charges will be in sign, and then I submit (点击接受), and then I receive a QRphoto allowing me entry access to that parking location. ”Over at Buick, the OnStar RemoteLink app connects owners to their cars no matter how faraway they are. “This car in Detroit, I could start from here in New York. Or let us say I have the only key to it and my wife in Detroit needs to get in the car, I can unlock it for her from here. ”The feature harnesses the car’s 4G LTE connectivity (连接性). Up to seven mobile devices can connect to it at any given time.“We want peo ple to feel as if they are at home within the car, which a lot of people want to be in just for the driving experience, now they can be in there as well, the passengers can be in there as well for the connectivity experience. ”But what does that connectivity mean for your privacy?“It is important to have personal information to create that individualized, personalized experience, but certainly it will be a customer’s option. ”For certain consumers, it may not even be an issue.“There certainly is a fac tor where a younger consumer is much more comfortable giving up a lot more privacy and data than an older consumer is, and more likelythan not, you are going to see a similar behavior to how they handle their personal privacy within the vehicle. ”Considering how capable our mobile devices have become, perhaps the only question left to answer is: “Who’s driving? ”【文章大意】由于移动设备的广泛应用, 制造商推出了装配有车载移动设备的轿车, 进而可从事由智能手机发出指令的动作。

It actually ended up being a fun and adventurous experience・The ride there was definitely long but worth it. As I woke up from my nap, I saw the beautiful scenery of the tall mountains and beautiful streams. The trails were made nicely for visitors. The waterfalls were breathtaking. Climbing up rocks was one of my favorite parts. Even though T fell a couple of times, T sti11 had a lot of fun. The fact that my family and I spent so much time together all trying to find out which route to take and what views to watch really brought us closer together・The great thing about nature is that, it' s just you, the views, and the people around you. There J s nothing to bother you and it,s the best way to relax and enjoy yourself. Yosemite has 5 of the world? s highest waterfalls, and about 300 lakes. The structure of each mountain is incredible; it/ s formed in ways that almost take your breath away. having an eye wasn’t enough. The drone also needed a “brain” to understand what it was seeing. And that brain would have to recognize what constitutes a trail.Camera images, however, can be very difficult for a puter to interpret, study leader Alessandro Giusti notes. So he and his team used photos of forest trails to train their drone’s neural network(神经网络).They attached three GoPro cameras to a single headband. One camera pointed straight forward. The other two were directed 30 degrees to the right and left of the centre.A hiker put the package on and then hit the trails in a forested part of Switzerland.Over several weeks, the cameras recorded a total of 8 hours of video covering 7 kilometres of trails. The researchers then divided the video into individual still images to train the neural network. The network learned to identify what a trail looked like. The team then tested the program with unused images from the video. The puter did a slightly better job than the people had in correctly classifying the images. This meant the drone was ready to navigate the real world on its own.Giusti and his team took their now “smart” device to a forest with trails that had not been used in the drone’s training. It flew along the path, constantly adjusting its direction based on the images ing in through its camera. The drone didn’t perform as well in real-life as it did in the lab,Giusti admits. That’s because the drone’s camera took lower-quality images than the cameras that had been used to train it.As a result, the images being taken by the drone looked different,he explains. This 选修7 Unit 2 Robots李仕才Ⅰ.阅读理解ACultural trends are greatly influenced by celebrities. When Oprah goes on a 21day vegan diet, it makes headlines. When Amal Clooney wears a Stella McCartney dress, sales go way up. However, one trend that seems harmless — but is actually damaging —is the pressure on famous people to have their photos taken with exotic(奇异的) animals.Famous people asked to have photos taken with wild animals for a magazine spread have good intentions and even love animals. This makes them easy targets for the greedy amusement parks and fake animal centers. Kind people are naturally drawn to places that claim to offer exotic animals safety and are eager to hug baby bears or to swim with dolphins. However, exposé after exposé has shown that m any of these business people are breeders, dealers or exhibitors that are using Hollywood's goodwill for their own ends.At the recently closed Tiger Temple in Thailand, 40 dead tiger cubs were found secretly killed to make tiger wine and other folk medicine. The number of tourist traps using words like “rescue” in their names has increased greatly in recent years. Many business people continually breed the animals, so they'll have a constant supply of young animals to charge people money for photos. Of course, the babies are cute but they grow fast, and within a few weeks they are too big to handle. In some Asian countries, elephants are kept in camps. A few camps are working to help elephants in trouble, but the vast majority are not, and training methods are cruel. As soon as the cameras are gone after someone like Prince William takes a photo with an elephant, the chains go back on.Fans, tell the stars: Stay away from exotic animal photos, and the animals will be grateful.【文章大意】本文主要讲述了明星与动物拍照后对动物造成的危害。

Vitamin B could help lessen the effects of the most dangerous type of air pollution, according to a new study published recently. In the first study of its kind, a team of international researchers looked at the damage caused by one of the pollutants that have the most severe impact on health: PM2.5.Particulate matter, or PM, is a type of air pollutant consisting of small particles of different sizes. PM2.5 has a diameter of fewer than 2.5 micrometers, about 30 times smaller than a human hair. These particles are so small that they can go into our respiratory system(呼吸系统), resulting in lung and systemic inflammation(炎症) and stress. The team found that something as simple as a daily vitamin B supplement could potentially reduce the impact of the tiny particles on the human body, although they stressed that the research was in its early stages and the sample size was small. For this study, 10 volunteers were initially exposed to clean air and given a placebo(安慰剂) to check their responses. The group then took another placebo for four weeks before being exposed to heavily polluted air from downtown Toronto, where an estimated 1,000 cars pass every hour. The bad air was delivered to the volunteers through an “oxygentype” face mask. The experiment was then repeated, with each volunteer taking a B vitamin supplement daily made up of 2.5 mg of folic acid, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 1 mg of vitamin B12. B6 can be found in liver, chicken and nuts, and B12 in fish, meat, eggs, milk and some cereals. The researchers found that four weeks of B vitamin supplements reduced the damage of PM2.5 exposure by 28%-76%. The results highlight how prevention at an individual level could be used to fight the harmful effects of PM2.5.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh — and the more reasons there are, the more powerful the joke will be.I was attending a standup comedy show in Egypt, and when the man star ted to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their heads off. The main reason why those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn't only funny, but it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren't jealous of him.(第三段最后一句)In short, we don't laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage you from making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person's emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.【文章大意】本文主要分析了人们笑的原因。

Unit 2 RobotsⅠ阅读理解(2018·武昌高三调研)Kanda really doesn’t like to walk alone. The scientist from a research institute of intelligent robots finds the experience so boring that he’d rather drive—even though he lives close to his lab and k nows that walking is healthy.“I enjoy walking with someone, like with my wife, with my daughter,” Kanda said.“But they are not always available.”So Kanda, who specializes in humanlike bots, developed a robotic walking partner that could make small talk based on its surroundings, which,he hopes, might motivate people to get out and exercise more. The bot rests on a person’s shoulder like a boxy parrot. It weighs about a pound and a half and sits roughly 8.5 inches high, and is 3.5 inches wide and 10 inches long.A microphone,a speaker, and an internal camera allow it to communicate. It’s even equipped with a smile.Kanda and his team collected video from five different locations, including a garden and a shopping mall, and created a dataset of small talk topics related to each location. Then they programmed the robot to associate visual cues with specific topics.A special speech software provided the robot with a voice.Near a group of parked cars, for example,it might say,“In a big parking lot, sometimes I forget where I parke d.”They tested the robot on 15 volunteers,10 males and 5 females, who were paid and averaged about 26 years old.“Have you ever blown a puff of dandelion(蒲公英) seeds into the air?”The robot asked a participant, who smiled and responded,“Yes,I often did that w hen I was a child.” Although several participants noted the robot’s weight,Kanda was surprised that no one considered the experience strange or funny.“I guess people enjoy new technologies,” he said.Just like a human partner,Kanda’s bot isn’t perfect. It’s not able to go for walks in heavy rain and, while the robot can make expressions,it can’t really hold a conversation, about which Kanda is most worried.Despite its limits,Kanda was comforted by the bot’s presence.“I felt a kind of sense of being with someone,”he said,“particularly when it spoke.”【解题导语】本文主要介绍了新研发的陪人散步的机器人。

Unit 2 Robots李仕才一、阅读理解。

A new study has found the amount of antibiotics given to farm animals is expected to increase by twothirds over the next 15 years. Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to rising demand for meat, milk and eggs. The researchers warn the drugs could quicken the development ofantibioticsresistant (耐抗生素的)infections. Such infections are already a major public health concern in the United States.Experts say when people stop living in poverty, the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. Increasing prosperity in Asia has meant people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk and dairy products as they did 50 years ago.To meet that demand, farms have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, often the easiest way to deal with some of the problems of crowding is to give them antibiotics. It’s clear that antib iotics help animals stay healthy in a crowded environment and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually, and the antibiotics-resistant bacteria can spread to people.Doctors find that antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer do. The bacteria have learned ways to fight the medicine. Doctors say the heavy use of antibiotics in animals is one of several reasons for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. In the United States, at least two million people get drug-resistant infections each year. At least 23,000 die from an infection.Ramanan Laxminarayan heads the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy. He says the problem is expected to get worse. He believes the use of antibiotics in animals will soon increase sharply. He says that will not be good for human health. He and other researchers wrote a report on the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They used datafrom the United Nations that tell how and where livestock(牲畜) are raised today. They then predicted how such production would change by 2030.Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And she adds the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.1.What is the passage mainly about?A.How to keep farm animals healthy.B.The abuse of antibiotics in human beings.C.A new way of raising farm animals.D.The disadvantages of using antibiotics.2.From he passage, we can infer that using antibiotics too often in farm animals ______.A.will lead to animals' being less activeB.causes animals to get infected more easilyC.makes antibiotic-resistant bacteria spread to peopleD.has a negative effect on the growth of animals3.What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals?A.The increasing need for meat.B.The need for eating diversely.C.The less effective antibiotics.D.The limited farm technology.4.How will the use of antibiotics in animals according to Ramanan Laxminarayan?A.It will soon stop rising.B.It will soon increase sharply.C.It will soon rise steadily.D.It will soon increase slowly.参考答案: 1.D; 2.C; 3.A; 4.B解析: 1.[纵观全文便知,文章主要介绍了人们使用抗生素来饲养家畜带来的缺点。
