About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundre d is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be d riven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a per son cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of gree n -- a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called "c ones". These help us to see in a bright light and to tell the diff erence
between colors. There are also millions of "rods", but these ar e used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape b ut no color.
Some insects(昆虫) have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊
子) prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have fav orite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the ai d of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may ev en learn more about the invisible (看不见的) colors around us.
28. The passage is mainly about_____________.
A. color and its surprising effects
B. women being luckier than men
C. danger caused by color blindness
D. color blindness
29. According to the passage, with the help of the "cones", we can____________.
A. tell different shapes
B. see in a weak light
C. kill mosquitoes
D. tell orange from yellow
30. Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by wome n?
A. Women are more careful.
B. There are fewer color-blind women.
C. Women are fonder of driving than men.
D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.
31. We can attract and kill mosquitoes by using a __________ ___.
A. red light
B. yellow light
C. blue light
D. green light

On March 17 there will be an explosion of green color across t he world in celebration of St Patrick’s Day. The Irish traditiona lly wear something colored green on this day as the color is c onnected with . Another St Patrick’s Day tradition is for the no n-
Irish to make jokes about the Irish. Usually these jokes will be about Irish stupidity or their famous thirst for alcohol, or their r eputation(名
声) for telling tall(untrue) stories. These characteristics are all part of the famous Irish stereotype (成
见) that Irishmen are hot-
tempered drinkers, who love to fight and will do anything to av oid a day’s work.
The real joke, however, is that this negative Irish stereotype st ill exists. The stereotype might have had some truth back in th e 19th century when Irish was poverty-
stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the United States t o escape famine(饥
荒), but there they had to compete, occasionally with their fist s, for jobs and housing with other immigrant groups. It was on ’s streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fighti ng. However, it was far from truth today, with the exception of the drinking perhaps.
Today, the Irish are admired for their story telling gifts and mu sical talents. It is no accident that several of the greatest write rs of the 20th century were Irish. Or that many of today’s most popular music groups such as singer Enya and rock band U2 are Irish born and growing. Lonely Planet readers even ranke d as the friendliest country in the world.
However, one bit of the Irish stereotype is true, their love for d rink. Drinking in is a job, but it’s not necessarily something to criticize. It was the Irish after all who created one of the world’s best-loved beers, Guinness.
32. What is this reading passage mainly about?
A. The Irish festival--- St Patrick’s Day.
B. How the Irish earned their reputation.
C. Jokes about the Irish people.
D. Famous Irish stereotype and the truth.
33. Which of the following statements does NOT belong to the Irish stereotype?
A. Irishwomen are not hot-tempered drinkers.
B. Most Irish people are always very lazy.
C. Irishmen are good at street fighting.
D. Irish people are famous for their stupidity.
34. Where did the negative Irish stereotype come from?
A. From their everyday behavior towards other people.
B. From the behavior of Irish immigrants to the in the 19th ce ntury.
C. From the historical records of the 19th century .
D. From most people’s impression of the Irish people.
35. Which of the following was created by the Irish?
A. Tall stories.
B. Street fighting winners
C. Guinness
D. Love for drink.

闸) and fell right off the bike. My granddad kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.

Since that happened, my granddad decided to call it a day and try again t he next morning. The next morning I woke up bright and early, and was very eager to try to ri de my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling any more.

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier ; only about one in two hundred is affected in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be dr iven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see de ep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a per son cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may se e everything in shades of green -- a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millio ns of very small things called "cones". These help us to see in a bright light and to tell the diff erence
between colors. There are also millions of "rods", but these are used for seeing when it is ne ar dark. They show us shape but no color.
Some insects(昆虫) have favorite colors. Mosquitoes (蚊
子) prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar w ay human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shap es at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible (看不见
的) colors around us.

On March 17 there will be an explosion of green color across the world in celebration of St P atrick’s Day. The Irish traditionally wear something colored green on this day as the color is c onnected with . Another St Patrick’s Day tradition is for the non-
Irish to make jokes about the Irish. Usually these jokes will be about Irish stupidity or their fa mous thirst for alcohol, or their reputation(名
声) for telling tall(untrue) stories. These characteristics are all part of the famous Irish stereot ype (成见) that Irishmen are hot-
tempered drinkers, who love to fight and will do anything to avoid a day’s work.
The real joke, however, is that this negative Irish stereotype still exists. The stereotype might have had some truth back in the 19th century when Irish was poverty-
stricken and starving. Many Irish moved to the United States to escape famine(饥
荒), but there they had to compete, occasionally with their fists, for jobs and housing with oth er immigrant groups. It was on ’s streets that the Irish earned their reputation for street fightin g. However, it was far from truth today, with the exception of the drinking perhaps.
Today, the Irish are admired for their story telling gifts and musical talents. It is no accident th at several of the greatest writers of the 20th century were Irish. Or that many of today’s most popular music groups such as singer Enya and rock band U2 are Irish born and growing. Lon ely Planet readers even ranked as the friendliest country in the world.
However, one bit of the Irish stereotype is true, their love for drink. Drinking in is a job, but it’。
