高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案)
高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解The past ages of man have all been carefully labeled by anthropologists (人类学家). Descriptions like "Palaeolithic (旧石器时代的) Man". "Neolithic (新石器时代的) Man",etc. neatly sum up whole periods. When the time comes for anthropologists to turn their attention to the twentieth century, they will surely choose the label "Legless Man". Histories of the time will go something like this: "in the twentieth century, people forgot how to use their legs. Men and women moved about in cars, buses and trains from a very early age. There were lifts in all large buildings to prevent people from walking. And the surprising thing is that they didn't use their legs even when they went on holiday."The future history books might also record that we were deprived (剥夺) of the use of our eyes. In our hurry to get from one place to another, we failed to see anything on the way. Air travel gives you a bird's-eye view of the world. When you travel by car or train, an unclear picture of the countryside constantly smears the windows. Car drivers, especially, are mixed with the urge to go on and on: they never want to stop. The typical twentieth-century traveler is the man who always says "I've been there." You mention the remotest, and someone is bound to say "I've been there"-meaning, "I drove through it at100 miles an hour on the way to somewhere else."When you travel at high speeds, the present means nothing: you live mainly in the future because you spend most of your time looking forward to arriving at some other place. But actual arrival, when it is achieved, is meaningless. You want to move on again. By traveling like this, you suspend all experience. The traveler on foot, on the other hand, lives constantly in the present. For him traveling and arriving are one and the same thing: he arrives somewhere with every step he makes. He experiences the present moment with his eyes, his ears and the whole of his body. At the end of his journey he feels a delicious physical tiredness. He knows that sound, satisfying sleep will be his: the just reward of all true travelers.(1)Anthropologists label man nowadays "Legless Man" because _____.A. people prefer cars, buses and trainsB. people use their legs less and lessC. lifts prevent people from walkingD. people travel without using legs(2)According to the passage, what might make people lose the right of using their eyes?A. the modern means of transportation.B. A bird's-eye view of the world.C. The unclear sight from the vehicles.D. The fast-paced life style.(3)From the passage, we know traveling at high speeds means _______.A. appreciating beautiful sceneryB. experiencing life skillsC. focusing on the next destinationD. feeling physical tiredness(4)What does the author intend to tell us?A. Modern transportation devices have replaced legs.B. Traveling makes the world a small place.C. Human's history develops very fast.D. The best way to travel is on foot.【答案】(1)B(2)D(3)C(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,由于种种现代化交通设施,人们不需用脚走路,甚至也不需要用眼看风景,出门就坐汽车、公交车、地铁、飞机……汽车、飞机速度飞快,外边的景物难以看清,最终导致人们忘记用脚、用眼,成为“无脚之人”,一切都经历不到。

He told his brother: "Receive this scholar and treat him well!Don't say a word to him,and everything will be OK."The monk left the temple. Upon returning, he went to meet his guest."Did my brother receive you properly?" asked the monk."You brother is outstanding. He's a great theologian!" exclaimed the theologian with great enthusiasm."What do you mean? My brother---a theologian?" stuttered(结巴地说)the surprised monk."We had a passionate conversation," replied the scholar." We communicated professionally by means of gestures. I showed him one finger and he replied by showing me two. Logically, I answered with three fingers and then he astonished me by raising a closed fist, ending the debate. With one finger, I implied the unity of Buddha. With two fingers, he expanded my point of view by reminding me that Buddha was inseparable from his theory. Delighted by the reply, with three fingers I expressed: Buddha and his theory in the world. Then he suggested a wonderful response, showing me his fist: Buddha, his theory and the world, all together as one whole. "A little later, the monk went to look for his one-eyed brother."So how did it go earlier with the theologian?" he asked."Very simple," said the brother. "He made fun of me; he show me one finger emphasizing that I have but one eye. Not wanting to fall into the conflict, I showed that he was fortunate enough to have two eyes. Critically, he continued, 'Be that as it may, between us, we have three eyes.' That was the straw that broke the camel's back. 【英语】高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案)含解析一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解The number of giraffes is becoming smaller across Africa, according to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The total population has dropped by 40 percent in the last 15 years. Surprisingly, even scientists haven't given much attention to giraffes. We are learning more about their ecology, but what we know is still way behind what we know about other species. "It's a silent extinction," said Dr. Julian Hennessy, a wildlife scientist."The main reason for the smaller number of giraffes is their loss of living places," said Hennessy, "as an increasing part of land is used for farming. But hunting also has a big influence." You might wonder why hunters would focus on giraffes. First of all, once a giraffe is brought down, there is lots of meat with a small amount of effort. Besides, there is another thing encouraging the hunting. In Tanzania, Hennessy says, the latest word on the street is that eating giraffe meat could cure AIDS. Fresh giraffe heads and bones can be sold at prices of up to $140 per piece.Another widespread misconception about giraffes is that they are everywhere. Look at kids' books which are full of giraffes. They are always in zoo collections. They can be seen easily, so you don't think we have to worry about them. But the truth is that they are in danger of extinction. There is a lack of right and true data.Hennessy and other researchers are now pulling together the data needed to improve the situation of the entire giraffe species and all nine subspecies (亚种). The information will be used to change the giraffe's listing on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, which now lists the species as of "least concern" but two subspecies as "endangered". "It's a lot of work to gather the necessary information," Hennessy says. "And several other giraffe subspecies will be recommended for endangered listings next year or the year after." He hopes that the world will finally start to take notice of how endangered these beloved animals have become.(1)By saying "It's a silent extinction", Hennessy tells us that ______.A. giraffes are unpopular in AfricaB. the giraffe is always silent in daily lifeC. the ecology of Africa needs more attentionD. the extinction occurs without enough attention(2)What has caused the high price of giraffe meat in Tanzania?A. The country's custom.B. The illegal international trade.C. The cost of hunting a giraffe.D. The idea that it's a cure for AIDS.(3)The misconception in Para. 3 can be corrected by ______.A. preventing illegal hunting in AfricaB. rewriting kids' books about giraffesC. providing reliable data about giraffesD. spreading scientific knowledge of AIDS(4)The final purpose of Hennessy's great effort is to ______.A. collect more information about giraffesB. raise public awareness of protecting giraffesC. prove giraffes will disappear in the next few yearsD. work with the International Union for Conservation of Nature【答案】(1)D(2)D(3)C(4)B【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了长颈鹿濒临灭绝的原因,并指出提供准确的数据,提高人们的保护意识至关重要。

高考英语试卷阅读理解题分类汇编(附答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.(2019•浙江)阅读理解California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s, according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor(因素).The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46, 000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick Mclntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters targeted big trees. Housing development pushed into the woods. Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources(资源).But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, Mclntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).Since the 1930s, Mclntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.(1)What is the second paragraph mainly about?A. The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.B. The increasing variety of California big trees.C. The distribution of big trees in California forests.D. The influence of farming on big trees in California.(2)Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees?A. Ecological studies of forests.B. Banning woodcutting.C. Limiting housing development.D. Fire control measures.(3)What is a major cause of the water shortage according to Mclntyre?A. Inadequate snowmelt.B. A longer dry season.C. A warmer climate.D. Dampness of the air.(4)What can be a suitable title for the text?A. California's Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?B. Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon.C. Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests?D. Patrick Mclntyre: Grow More Big Trees in California【答案】(1)A(2)D(3)C(4)A【解析】【分析】本文属于议论文,围绕加利福尼亚的大树从20世纪30年代以来大量减少为主题,探讨出现这一现象的原因。

高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案)及解析一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few latecomers. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. That's right― during some runs, one of them delivers a talk. Topics range from the brain to Bitcoin. But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first clue that something was off was the man who sprinted past them. "Running at an amazing pace," Cassidy told Runner's World admiringly. Cassidy discovered why the sprinter was so fleet of foot when another man ran by, yelling, "Help! He took my phone and laptop!"At that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, trailing the suspect down the streets of Philadelphia until he ducked into a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had dumped the loot (赃物)in a backyard. No luck. So they decided to ask residents whether they'd seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one row house, they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, he had already emerged from the construction site—and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect darted out from behind the bush ... and right into the arms of campus police, who'd joined the chase shortly behind the runners. The members of this running group are not hard-core athletes. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. ''Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat," Cassidy told The Philadelphia Inquirer. "But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities."(1)Why do the group members gather together?A.To do some stretching.B.To have a regular run.C.To deliver a lecture.D.To cover some topics.(2)What does the underlined word "sprinted" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Dashed.B.Pushed.C.Jumped.D.Escaped.(3)We can infer that the success of the chase is mainly due to____ .A.the assistance of the runnersB.the owner of the row houseC.the campus police on patrolD.the joint efforts of the people(4)Which of the following best describes Cassidy?A.Athletic and generous.B.Courageous and ambitious.C.Helpful and humorous.D.Thoughtful and demanding.【答案】(1)B(2)A(3)D(4)C【解析】【分析】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了跑步俱乐部成员和校园警察等众人合力将抢了别人电话和笔记本电脑的嫌犯抓获的故事。

高考英语专题复习阅读理解(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Our plan was to drive into Cambridge, catch the 7:34 train to Liverpool Street Station, then to separate and meet again for lunch. We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife's sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog that my wife realized that we hadn't decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn't find her.It was now one o'clock, and the concert began at 2:30. "Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall," suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day.(1)Why was Joan separated from her sister and her brother-in-law?A. they could not see each other because of the fog.B. 高考英语阅读理解真题汇编(含答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解Mexico sites on an island plateau (高原) surrounded by volcanic peaks, which makes air quality a constant concern for people who live there. In April, the country took a decisive step toward improving air quality by enacting a temporary ban on private and Federal vehicles in the city. The rule forbids people from driving in the city one day each week and one Saturday each month. Electric vehicles, government service vehicles, public transport options and school buses are not included in the ban.Mexico City isn't the first urban center to be involved in car-free living. But the ban is more than an awareness-raiser. It was enacted with the direct aim of solving air pollution. In March, the city sank into a deep brown haze of smog when the pollution levels passed the 200 mark. The city ordered some 1.1m of the area's 4.7m cars off the streets and also offered free bus and subway rides.Mexico City's temporary vehicle ban raises questions about the best ways to improve urban air quality. India, whose citizens breathe some of the world's dirtiest air, has tried a variety of solutions. Earlier this year, the Indian government started a 4% sales tax on new-car purchases. Beijing also has experience with cleaning the air. The city introduced alternate-day rules in advance of the 2008 Olympic Games, which produced good results. And then there is the London congestion (拥挤) charge, introduced in 2003. The charge has had a measurable effect on air quality. For now, Mexico City — named by the United Nations as the most polluted city on the planet in 1992 — can look forward to the start of the region's rainy season, when daily showers will help lo clean the air.(1)How did Mexico ban vehicles in the city?A. By banning private and Federal vehicles one day a week.B. By forbidding private and public vehicles every Saturday.C. By limiting the number of new cars.D. By prohibiting the vehicles except public ones.(2)What did the government of Mexico do when carrying out the ban on vehicles?A. Raised the number of public vehicles.B. Offered free bus and subway rides.C. Introduced more travel options.D. Encouraged citizens to leave the city.(3)What may contribute to improving the air quality in Mexico?A. Alternate-day rules.B. Tax rises.C. Congestion charge.D. The rainy season.(4)What's the best title for the passage?A. Mexico —an Island PlateauB. A Variety of Bans on Vehicles in MexicoC. Should Cities Be Car-free ZonesD.

American college students are becoming more adventuresome as they study abroad, showing less interests in English-speaking destinations such as Great Britain and Australia and more in such countries as China, India, Argentina and Brazil.Britain remained the most popular study destination in 2005, according to annual figures from the Institute of International Education, followed by Italy, Spain and France. But the number of American students studying in Britain and Australia descended a little, even as the number of American students abroad rose by 8%. The growth came in non-English speaking European countries and in Asia. China is now the eighth most popular destination for American students, attracting nearly 6,400 in 2005, up 35% from the number of the year before. Argentina and India saw increases of more than 50%.Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, said that a range of factors contributed to the trend, from growing awareness of globalization after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, to programs such as former President Bush's National Security Language Initiative, which trains soldiers, intelligence officers and diplomats in foreign languages. “What Americans are doing is waking up and discovering there's a world out there,” he said.Other figures showed the flow of students in the opposite direction, from foreign countries into American universities. The institute found that international enrollment (入学) in American higher education remained steady at about 565,000. The figures are of keen interest to universities, which depend on foreign students for teaching and research help, and to policy-makers, who consider it important, as future foreign leaders may be familiar with the United States. The year of 2005 saw big increases in students from South Korea, Mexico and Taiwan of China. India sends the most students and China is No.2. Other countries that show large percentage increases in the number of students sent to the US include Nepal and Vietnam, while Japan, Turkey and Malaysia saw declines. About 58% of international students in the US come from Asia.(1)What does the underlined word “descended” in Paragraph 2 means?A. Changed.B. Declined.C. Multiplied.D. Increased.(2)Why do more American students study in Asia?A. They expect to get more teaching and research help.B. They lose confidence in English-speaking countries.C. They are afraid that terrorist attacks will happen again.D. They prefer to explore a different world from their own.(3)Where were most foreign students in America from in 2005?A. China.B. India.C. Argentina.D. Britain.(4)What can we infer from the passage?A. There were 6,400 American students studying in China in 2005.B. Chinese students to America will overpass Indians in the future.C. International enrollment in American higher education changed a lot.D. Asian studentsaccount for a large part of foreign students in America.【答案】(1)B(2)D(3)B(4)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了不同国家的人国外留学的情况。

AMEXICO CITY: A jetliner from the beach resort of Cancun was briefly hijacked as it landed in Mexico City on Wednesday. The hijackers released all passengers shortly before federal police stormed the plane, and the crew emerged unharmed moments later.Police, who did not fire a single shot, led as many as eight handcuffed men away from the airplane, which was isolated at the end of a runway in an area designed for emergencies. The hijackers’ motive was unclear, though Mexican news media initially identified them as Bolivians demanding to speak with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.US, French and Mexican citizens were among the 112 passengers and crew on Aeromexico Flight 576, according to a US official who had been briefed on the situation. The official was not authorized to discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.Mexico’s transportation and communications secretary, Juan Molinar, said there was no bomb on the airplane, although some passengers said one of the hijackers held a package that resembled an explosive device, and a bomb squad (拆弹小组) was later seen near the airplane. He did not immediately identify the hijackers or speculate on their motive.“Various people who participated in the act have been detained and we are investigating,〞Molinar said. The attorney general’s office said it was opening an investigation into terrorism and kidnapping but did not specify how many people could be charged.Mexican news media initially reported the hijackers were Bolivian, but Bolivia’s ambassador to Mexico, Jorge Mancilla, said Mexican authorities had no evidence that was the case. Mancilla said sources told him they could be Colombian or Venezuelan. Several passengers told reporters they did not notice a non-Mexican accent.Passenger Rocio Garcia told the Televisa network that the pilot made an announcement after landing in Mexico City that the airplane was being hijacked. Passengers said the hijackers never communicated with them directly.“These were scary moments,〞she said. She said she saw one of the hijackers whom she described as a well-dressed, older man.“He looked fine, like a normal passenger,〞she said.Passenger Daniel Hernandez said he saw a hijacker carrying a Bible. 1.From the first paragraph we can conclude that _________.A.the hijackers just wanted to play a trick on the policeB.the hijackers didn’t prepare for their actionC.the hijackers surrendered before the police firedD.the hijackers lost their way at the last moment2.From what Juan Molinar said we can learn that _________.A.police were still trying to identify a possible bombB.passengers succeeded in stopping the explosionC.a frightening bomb was found later on the airplaneD.several Mexicans were involved in the hijacking3.What may be the first step taken when the hijacked plane landed?A.They gave a sudden attack at the hijackers.B.They kept the plane away from other planes.C.They asked the crew to control the hijackers.D.They abandoned the plane at the end of the runway.4.The hijackers, as some passengers described, _________.A.were good at bargaining with the policeB.were all well-dressed American old menC.all came from Colombia or VenezuelaD.stayed calm and appeared noble, educatedBWarning: reading too much Cinderella to your daughter may damage her emotional health in later life. A paper to be developed at the international congress of cognitive psychotherapy in Gothenburg suggests a link between the attitudes of women abused by their parents and early exposure to the wrong sort of fairy tales. It says girls who identified with Cinderella, Rapunzel and Beauty in Beauty and the Beast were more likely to say in destructive relationships as adults. The theory was developed by Susan Darker Smith, a psychotherapist at the University of Derby. She interviewed 67 female abuse survivors and found that 61 put up with severe abuse because they believed they could change their partners with patience, composition and love. The same view was taken by male survivors who had been abused as children. Hardly any of the women in a control group, who had not experienced abuse, thought they could change their partners in this way. These women and men said they would leave a relationship rather than put up with abuse from a partner. Ms Darker Smith found the abused women were much more likely to identify with Cinderella and other submissive female characters in fairytales, who were later rescued by a stranger prince or hero.Although most girls heard the stories, damage appeared to be done to those who adopted the characters as role models.“They believe if their love is strong enough they can change their parents’ behaviors,〞 she said.〞Overexposure in children to stories that emphasize the transformational qualities of love may make women believe they can change their partners.〞For example, they might never have understood the obvious flaw in the story of Rapunzel, who remained locked in a high tower until rescued by a knight on a white horse, who broke the door down. “The question,〞said Ms Darker Smith, “is why she did not break the door down herself.〞5.The passage is especially intended for _________.A.parents with young daughtersB.girls who like reading fairy storiesC.girls who think they can change their partnersD.parents with grown-up daughters6.Cinderella, Rapunzel and Beauty in Beauty and the Beast are similar in that _________.A.they all married some princes B.they all changed their partners with loveC.they were all abused by their partners D.they all put up with abuse 7.Which of the following statements is true of the women in a control group?A.They don’t believe in fairy tales.B.They don’t believe in the transformational qualities of love.C.They have also experienced abuse.D.They survived abuse.8.What does the underlined word “submissive〞in the 3rd paragraph probably mean?A.kind-hearted B.passive C.gentle D.easy-goingCThe days of the hunter are almost over in India. This is partly because there is practically nothing left to kill, and partly because some steps have been taken mainly by banning tiger-shooting to protect those animals which still survive. Some people say that Man is naturally a hunter. I disagree with this view. Surely our earliest forefathers, who at first possessed no weapons, spent their time digging for roots, and were no doubt themselves often hunted by meat-eating animals.I believe the main reason why the modern hunter kills is that he thinks people will admire his courage in overpowering dangerous animals. Of course, there are some who truly believe that the killing is not really the important thing, and that the chief pleasure lies in the joy of the hunt and the beauty of the wild countryside. There are also those for whom hunting in fact offers a chance to prove themselves and risk death by design; these men go out after dangerous animals like tigers, evenif they say they only do it to rid the countryside of a threat. I can respect reasons like these, but they are clearly different from the need to strengthen your high opinion of yourself. The greatest big-game hunters expressed in their writings something of these finer motives. One of them wrote:“You must properly respect what you are after and shoot it clearly and on the animal’s own territory (领地).You must fix forever in your mind all the wonders of that particular day. This is better than letting him grow a few years older to be attacked and wounded by his own son and eventually eaten, half alive, by other animals. Hunting is not a cruel and senseless killing —not if you respect the thing you kill, not if you kill to enrich your memories, not if you kill to feed your people.〞I can understand such beliefs, and can compare these hunters with those who hunted lions with spears and bravely caught them by the tail. But this is very different from many tiger-shoots I have seen, in which modern weapons were used. The so-called hunters fired from tall trees or from the backs of trained elephants. Such methods made tigers seem no more dangerous than rabbits.9.There is no more hunting in India now partly because ________.A.it is dangerous to hunt there B.hunting is already out of dateC.hunters want to protect animals D.there are few animals left to hunt 10.The author thinks modern hunters kill mainly ________.A.to make the countryside safe B.to earn people’s admirationC.to gain power and influence D.to improve their health11.What do we learn about the big-game hunters?A.They hunt old animals. B.They mistreat animals.C.They hunt for food. D.They hunt for money.12.What is the author’s view on the tiger-shoots he has seen?A.Modern hunters lack the courage to hunt face-to-face.B.Modern hunters should use more advanced weapons.C.Modern hunters like to hunt rabbits instead of tigers.D.Modern hunters should put their safety first.DWatching bison up close is fascinating, like watching a grass fire about to leap out of control. With their huge, wedge-shaped heads and silver-dollar-size brown eyes, the 2,000-pound animals are symbols of another place and time. More than 100 bison now roam the 30,000-acre American Prairie Reserve in eastern Montana — the first time they’ve inhabited that region in a century. Direct descendants of the tens of millions of bison that once populated the Western plains, they represent an epic effort:to restore a piece of America’s prairie to the national grandeur that Lewis and Clark extolled two centuries ago. During that famous expedition across the Western states to the Pacific, the two explorers encountered so many bison that they had to wait hours for one herd to pass.In order to protect what’s here and reintroduce long-gone wildlife (something the World Wildlife Fund is helping with), the American Prairie Foundation began purchasing land from local ranchers in 2021. It now owns 30,000 acres and has grazing privileges on another 57,000. Its goal over the next 25 years is to assemble three million acres, the largest area of land devoted to wildlife management in the continental United States.Already, herds of elk, deer, and pronghorn antelope roam the grasslands, where visitors can camp, hike, and bike. Cottonwoods and willows are thriving along streams, creating habitats for bobcats, beavers, and other animals. Not everyon e shares APF’s vision. Some residents of Phillips County (pop. 3,904) worry that the area could become a prairie Disneyland, overcrowded with tourists. But the biggest obstacle is the ranchers themselves, whose cattle compete with prairie dogs and bison for grass and space.“People like me have no intention of selling their ranches,〞says Dale Veseth, who heads the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance of 35 families in Phillips County and whose family has been ranching here since 1886.“They’ve been a labor of love through the generations.〞Instead, he wants APF to pay or subsidize ranchers to raise bison. This would be far less costly for the foundation, he argues, than buying the land directly.13.If you go to the American Prairie Reserve in eastern Montana, you will see ________.A.the burning fire moving across the grasslandB.hundreds of bison travelling through the prairieC.tens of millions of bison occupying the farmlandD.groups of experts examining the dead bison14.What measures have been taken to protect the wildlife by APF?A.They have borrowed much money and developed new habitat.B.They have hired many farmers to raise bison on their farms.C.They have turned grassland into Disneyland to attract tourists.D.They have bought large land from farmers for bison to live on.15.The underlined word“subsidize〞in this passage means ________.A.give money to B.borrow money fromC.provide land to D.exchange land with16.Which would be the best title for this passage?A.The exciting scenery in eastern MontanaB.Great changes in raising bison in AmericaC.The return of the American prairieD.The challenge in protecting the grasslandEPupils are ordered not to wade into ankle-deep water unless teachers first carry out a full risk assessment and put“proper measures in place〞.Staff are expected to check rivers, ponds and the sea for currents and rocks before allowing children to dip their feet.Guidance issued to schools warns that any“impromptu (事先无准备的) water-based activities〞could pose dangers to children. The recommendations were outlined in a document-available to all 21,000 schools in England —to help teachers organize more school trips. Advice from the Department for Children, Schools and Families is intended to cut red tape (官样文章) and give staff practical tips. But the guidance caused argument after teachers were presented with a series of orders surrounding swimming and the use of minibuses. It said:“Swimming and padding or otherwise entering the waters of river, canal, sea or lake should never be allowed as an impromptu activity. The pleas of young people to bathe —because it is hot weather, for example, should be resisted where bathing has not been prepared for.〞“In-water activities should take place only when a proper risk assessment has been completed and proper measures put in place to control the risks.〞Teachers are urged to check the weather, currents, weeds, rip tides, river or sea beds and breakwaters before allowing children into the water. No child should be able to swim deeper than waist height, the guidance added.Margaret Morrissey, from campaign group Parents Outloud, said:“Wading out into the ocean is one thing but there’s nothing wrong with padding where the waves break.〞“Part of children’s learning is to walk along the water’s ed ge and get your feet wet. There are dangerous currents further out and you stay at the edge.〞She added:“I want to see schools and youth groups taking advantage of opportunities that learning outside the classroom can provide.〞But the Department for Children, Schools and Families said teachers had to plan activities carefully.“We are not banning padding,〞said a spokeswoman.“We have seen cases in the past where things have not been planned and assessed for the risk. Unplanned activities around water can be dangerous.〞17.Guidance issued to schools in England gives the information that _________.A.school trips to oceans are forbidden in the countryB.school swimming pools should be surrounded with fenceC.school staff must plan water-based activities carefullyD.school children shouldn’t have a walk along river banks18.Advice from the Department for Children, Schools and Families shows us that _________.A.they are strongly against the guidanceB.they are fond of the outline of the guidanceC.they do n’t understand the aim of the guidanceD.they want the guidance to become more useful19.To the guidance, Margaret Morrissey holds the opinion that _________.A.oceans are dangerous place for children to visitB.young people should be encouraged to learn outsideC.children should learn padding in rough ocean aloneD.schools should stop students from walking along beaches20.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?A.No padding on school trips, children told.B.No walking along the rivers, teachers told.C.No swimming after school, parents told.D.No learning out of school, students told.1—4 CABD 5—8 ADBB 9—12 DBCA 13—16 BDAC 17—20 CDBA。

My memories take me straight back to the days when I worked for John W. Rogers. While in college, I worked as an intern (实习生) at Ariel Investments. As the youngest girl of six kids from a single mom, I had very little knowledge of the business world. When I graduated, I decided to return to the company to improve myself. At the age of 22, my perspective was greatly influenced by lunching with the company's founder and then-president, John W. Rogers. He told me that I would often find myself in the company of rich and successful people with big titles, lots of degrees and lots of experience. And yet, my ideas could still be as good or even better, he said. This early advice became the guiding force that has helped me throughout my entire career. When I was starting out, I thought my inexperience was holding me back, but John said that it was a good thing. He told me that being inexperienced means that you have a fresh point of view.As my tutor, John encouraged me to be brave. As my boss, he took some giant leaps of faith to support me. Because of our first lunch and the years of support that followed, I never thought twice about speaking up, raising my hand or taking a seat at the table. Staying in the background was never a choice. But John's advice came with one important warning. I needed to keep my attitude in check. It's one thing to be firm but quite another to be rude. Similarly, there is a fine line between confidence and overconfidence. With that in mind, I have had to learn to balance the way I act around others. While Andre Finot, a spokesman for the cathedral, told The Times, that the cause of the fire is still unknown and that no one has been hurt while damage to the building appears catastrophic(灾难性的).CNN reports that over 400 firefighters have been sent to fight the fire, but that they may be unable to save the cathedral. 高考英语专题复习阅读理解(及答案)一、高中英语阅读理解1.阅读理解A study published in the journal Science reveals that since 1970, bird populations in the United States and Canada have declined by 29 percent, or almost 3 billion birds. The results show tremendous losses across diverse groups of birds and habitats - from iconic songsters such as meadowlarks to long-distance migrants such as swallows."These data are consistent with what we're seeing elsewhere," said coauthor Peter Marra, former head of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. It's urgent to address ongoing threats, both because the domino effects (多米诺效应)can lead to the decay of ecosystems that humans depend on for our own health and livelihoods and because people all over the world cherish birds in their own right. Can you imagine a world without birdsong?"Evidence for the declines emerged from detection of migratory birds in the air from 143 NEXRAD weather radar stations across the continent in a period spanning over 10 years as well as from nearly 50 years of data collected through multiple monitoring efforts on the ground. Citizen-science participants also contributed a lot, for the analysis included citizen-science data from the North American Breeding Bird Survey coordinated by the Canadian Wildlife Service- the main sources of long-term, large-scale population data for North American birds. The study noted that the largest factor driving these declines is likely the widespread loss and degradation of habitat, especially due to agricultural intensification and urbanization. Other studies have documented death from predation (捕食)by domestic cats; collisions with glass, buildings, and other structures; and pervasive (普遍的)use of pesticides associated with widespread declines in insects, an essential food source for birds. Climate change is expected to compound these challenges by altering habitats and threatening plant communities that birds need to survive."It's a wake-up call that we've lost more than a quarter of our birds in the U.S. and Canada," said coauthor Adam Smith from Environment and Climate Change Canada. But the crisis reaches far beyond our individual borders. Many of the birds that breed in Canadian backyards migrate through or spend the winter in the U.S. and places farther south - from Mexico and the Caribbean to Central and South America. What our birds need now is an historic, hemispheric effort that unites people and organizations with one common goal: bringing our birds back.(1)The underlined word "decay" in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to____.A.improvementB.worseningC.changedD.threat(2)What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?A.New findings of the research.B.Applications of the research.C.Data sources of the research.D.Methods of the research.(3)What Adam Smith said mainly implies that___________.A.bird populations in America and Canada dropped by a quarterB.the bird population crisis is not just within individual bordersC.there is little individuals can do to help increase bird populationsD.the solution to solving the crisis needs international cooperation【答案】(1)B(2)C(3)D【解析】【分析】本文是一篇新闻报道。

In my experience, freshmen today are different from those I knew when I started as a professor 25 years ago. College has always been demanding both academically and socially. But students now are less mature and often not ready for the responsibility of being in college. Many of today’s students lack resilience (适应力)and at the first sign of difficulty are unable to think out strategies. The hardship can be a failing grade on a test, a cut from the team, or a romantic breakup. It is really too easy to point the finger at parents who protect their children from life’s obstacles. Parents, who handle every difficulty and every other responsibility for their children from writing admission essays to picking college courses, certainly may contribute to their children’s lack of coping strategies. But we can look even more broadly to the social trends of today. How many people do you know who are on medications (治疗) to prevent anxiety or depression? The number of students who arrive at college already medicated for unwanted emotions has increased dramatically in the past 10 years. We, as a society, don’t want to“feel” anything unpleasant and we certainly don’t wan t our children to“suffer”. The resulting problem is that by not experiencing negative emotions, one does not learn the necessary skills to tolerate and solve problems. Our world is more stressful in general because of the current economic and political re alities, but I don’t believe that the college experience itself is more intense today than the past 10 years. What I do think is that many students are often not prepared to be young “adults”with all the responsibilities of life.As parents, we should expect young people to meet challenges. To encourage them in this direction, we have to step back and let them fail and pick themselves up and move forward. This approach needs to begin at an early age so that college can actually be a passage to independent adulthood.1. The best title of the text probably is_____A. Have College Freshmen Changed?B. What Should College Faculty and Staff Do Today?C. What Difficulty Are Freshmen Facing?D. How to Get Used to College Life for Freshmen?2. According to the text, today’s freshmen_____.A. are not good at dealing with problemsB. often fail in the examsC. can’t get along well with classmatesD. have to experience more intense college life3. If freshmen become more mature to face and solve problems, they should______.A. experience negative emotions themselvesB. ask parents, teachers and coaches for more helpC. receive medications to prevent anxiety or depressionD. put their hearts and soul into the study4. Going on holiday not only makes you feel good while you're there --- you gain the health benefits for months, new research shows.Jetting off to exotic destinations such as the Maldives cuts your blood pressure, helps you sleep better and bounce back from stress, it found. The benefits last at least a fortnight longer than the vacation and can be felt for months in some cases where it is claimed. Experts say workers should always take their full holiday entitlement each year --- as many as one in three don’t --- to get the benefits. The study compared key health markers in holidaymakers visiting Thailand, Peru or the Maldives, with people who stayed at home and continued working. The average blood pressure of those on holiday dropped by six percent while the workers saw their blood pressure rise by two percent over the same period. The sleep quality of holidaymakers improved by 17 percent while that of the non-holidaymakers deteriorated by 14 percent. The study also found the ability of vacationers to recover from stress --- known as the stress-resilience test --- improved by 29 percent. There was a 71 percent fall in stress resilience scores among workers. Tests showed a fall in blood glucoselevels, reducing the risk of diabetes, trimmer waistlines and enhanced mood and energy levels, with the effects sustained for at least two weeks after returning home. The Holiday Health Experiment was conducted by tour operator Kuoni and Nuffield He alth, the UK’s largest healthcare charity.1..
