Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed? In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because peopleare naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.【解题导语】本文是一篇议论文,讨论了现代建筑是否应该和古老的历史建筑建在一起。

Few people are aware that Waterloo Bridge, crossed by thousands of daily commuters(通勤者) and celebrated as a London landmark, was mainly built by a female workforce. There are no written or photographic records of the women who built the bridge since the construction company that built it closed in the 1980s and with it went all the records. What’s left is anecdotal evidence, kept alive by the tourist boat captains who have called it the Ladies’ Bridge.During the Second World War, with the majority of the active male labor force away at the front, women increasingly took on traditionally male roles. By 1944, 25,000 women were working in the construction industry, carrying out backbreaking tasks. These women were permitted to carry out this exhausting and dangerous work on the basis that it would only be temporary and that their pay would be lower than that of men. So the trend in women working in construction and engineering did not continue after the war.September sees a series of events celebrating the unknown work of the large female workforce. Musician Claudia Molitor has created a 45minute musical entitled “the Singing Bridge”, which runs at Somerset House from 9 to 25 September. In late September, the “Light up the Ladies’ Bridge” event sees the National Theatre’s fly tower lit up by large scale photographic projections(投影) of female construction workers working in construction during World War Ⅱ.Let’s all celebrate the women who have helped to build the cities in which we live.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

Restaurant chefs, home cooks, and foodies —people who love good food —often say that we eat with all of our senses.First, we use our sense of sight to appreciate how a meal is presented, either on a dinner plate or a dining table. Our sense of touch can also be important when preparing or sharing food.Next, with our sense of smell, we breathe in the mouth-watering aromas (香味) rising up from the meal. Finally, we enjoy the food with our sense of taste. But what about our sense of hearing? Does sound also affect our dining experience? A new report answers, “yes, it does. ”That answer comes from researchers at Brigham Young University in the United States. They found that hearing is important in the eating experience.Hear ing is often called “the forgotten food sense, ” says Ryan Elder, “if people notice the sound the food makes as they eat it, they might eat less. ”On the other hand, watching loud television or listening to loud music while eating can hide such noises. And this could lead to overeating. The researchers admit that the effects may not seem like much at one meal. But over a week, a month, or a year, all that food can really add up.But besides not overeating, there is another upside.Hearing the noises of your meal as you eat, could help you to be more mindful of the experience and perhaps help you to enjoy it more.【文章大意】本文告诉人们享用食物时, 会用到五种感觉: 视觉、触觉、听觉、嗅觉和味觉; 并着重说明了听觉对人们进食量的影响。

Unit 2 Poems李仕才一、阅读理解。
About Edinburgh CastleEdinburgh Castle plays an important role in Scotland’s capital. During the Wars of Scottish Independence the castle changed hands many times. In 1314 it was retaken from the English in a sudden night attack by Thomas Randolph, nephew of Robert the Bruce. The castle was home to kings and queens. Queen Margaret died here in 1093, and Mary, Queen of Scots, gave birth to James VI in the royal palace in 1566. From the 1600s onwards the castle was a military(军事的) base. Later it also held prisoners of war. Parts of the castle are still a military base, but it is now a world-famous visitor attraction.Opening HoursThe castle opens daily at 9:30 a.m. Closing time varies seasonally.1 April-30 September:It closes at 6 p.m.1 October-31 March:It closes at 5 p.m.The castle is closed on 25th and 26th December.
