Antarctica is home to the largest ice mass on Earth.About 98 percent of Antarctica is covered by ice.

Beautiful lakes have begun to appear on the top of the ice. They look like islands of deep blue in an ocean of white. These lakes are called supraglacial or meltwater lakes.

Beautiful as the lakes are,the ones scientists studied indicate trouble.Amber Leeson,a scientist with Lancaster University in England, said,“Antarctica has always had supraglacial lakes appearing on the ice during the summer months. But we really weren’t expecting to find lakes as far inland as 20 kilometers.”

An ice shelf is a thick floating platform of ice that forms where a glacier(冰川) or ice sheet flows down to a coastline and onto the ocean surface. The lakes form where a glacier or ice sheet reaches a coastline and into the sea.Water from the lakes can drip(滴下) down through the glacier, causing the huge river of ice and snow to weaken.

If the lakes form on grounded ice, which is the bit of the ice sheet that sits on the solid rock in the ground, then the water that they contain can drain(排走) away through the ice to the base, which can augment the flow of the ice.If they form on the floating part of the ice, which is where the ice shelf extends over the sea and begins to float on the sea,by repeatedly filling and draining they can actually weaken the ice shelf.

And as temperatures rise,the team expects to see more and more lakes appearing on the c o n t i n e n t.T h e s c i e n t i s t s f e a r t h a t m e l t w a t e r l a k e s c o u l d r a i s e t h e
