I think of almost missing my brother’s wedding because I was too busy hiring a car and driving through the “no-go” areas in order to do a group ride with the local triathletes. It boils down to this: I was born with an enormous amount of drive and determination. From a small girl, I would stay in at lunch time just to get ahead on class work rather than go out and play; I would get the bus on my own at ten years old and go to swim 100 lengths of the pool while other kids played pool games; I was the only girl in a rugby club of 250 boys. I have always lived my life to extremes. Call it unhealthy if you want, but that is the way I roll, no matter what it is I’m applying myself to.Being a professional athlete is no diff erent. If you want to be an Olympic champion, it’s all about that little extra thing you have done in your preparation that will set you apart from your competitors. Can this be overdone? Absolutely. But if your dream is to be the best and reach the winner’s platform, you had better be totally committed to your sport. In the words of the British triathlete Alistair Brownlee, “Even if it means getting injured, I’d prefer to have three or four outstanding years of winning stuff than having ten years of being average.”Doing what we do as athletes sets us apart because we are willing to do that extra little bit that might take us to the top. It is certainly not a balanced way to live and it is certainly not normal but those words are generally not used for anyone who is striving for greatness.4. What made the author almost miss her brother’s wedding?A.She failed to hire a car to get there.B.She was stopped at the “no-go” areas.C.She was busy with a sports training.D.She forgot about the exact date of it.5. Why does the author mention her early experiences in paragraph 2?A.To list her accomplishments.B.To recall her miserable memories.C.To explore reasons for her commitment to sports.D.To remind kids of the significance of determination.6. What can we learn from Alistair Brownlee’s words?A.Injury is unavoidable.B.Being average is acceptable.C.Winning awards takes a long time.D.Getting to the top requires efforts.7. Where might the text be found?A.A celebrity blog. B.An academic book.C.A travel brochure. D.A health magazine.Whether due to genuine concern for the environment or the widespread criticism of plastic among consumers, many companies have invested heavily in reducing their use of plastic packaging, which may indeed have a positive environmental impact. But another trend that’s grown out of the anti-plastic movement is a lot less positive: overpackaging. More and more brands have begun adding unnecessary paper packaging on top of plastic packaging in order to make their products look more environmentally friendly, without actually reducing plastic waste.Unfortunately, there’s a very good reason companies are adopting this clearly problematic approach. Through a series of eight studies with more than 4,000 participants, we found that consumers will accept a product’s packaging as more environmentally friendly if it’s plastic with an additional layer of paper than if the product is visibly packaged in identical plastic packaging but without the paper. These perceptions (认知) in turn make consumers both more likely to buy a product, and willing to pay more for it.Part of what makes this overpackaging trend particularly harmful is that it is much valued by consumers who reported engaging in more eco-friendly behaviors. They were more likely to view overpackaged products as environmentally friendly. As a result, the very consumers who are most interested in pushing companies to make sustainable choices are likely unintentionally encouraging the environmentally harmful practice of overpackaging. The good news is, overpackaging isn’t the only way to signal sustainability and attract such consumers. In our studies, we found that instead of additional paper packaging, simply adding a minimal packaging sticker to plastic packaging could clarify the misperception that overpackaged products are more sustainable, Especially for products for which plastic is necessary to ensure safe transportation and lengthen shelf life, this kind of clear messaging can help reduce consumers, discrimination against the responsible use of plastic packaging.Of course, minimal packaging stickers certainly should only be used if a brand has actually ensured that it is using the minimal possible packaging, ideally under the supervision of a trade organization or regulatory body that maintains clear, consistent standards.8. What can we learn about overpackaging according to paragraph 1?A.It calls for less investment.B.It involves the proper use of paper.C.It has a positive environmental impact.D.It causes over-consumption of materials.9. What do the eight studies find about consumers according to the text?A.They care about the environment.B.They are always following the trend.C.They like comparing products’ qualities.D.They prefer beautifully-decorated products.10. What function is expected of minimal packaging stickers?A.To help products stay fresh longer.B.To improve the brand’s popularity.C.To correct consumers’ misunderstanding.D.To present more information about products.11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.Minimal packaging stickers have been widely used.B.Advantages of minimal packaging stickers are overestimated.C.The use of minimal packaging stickers should be strictly regulated.D.The use of minimal packaging stickers is a solution to over-packaging.A therapy (治疗) client and I are working on an eating disorder and find it originated from a relationship break-up or perhaps being bullied in middle school. Such hurtful experiences led to not eating for a couple of weeks. Then comes a high praise from a friend that totally backfires. Maybe it’s an enthusiastic, “Wow, you look great!’’ In a flash, this praise excites an inner and often unconscious thought: “Oh, people care more about me if I lose weight. So many thing s feel out of control but I can control people’s affection by not eating.”Often, very well-intentioned individuals offer praise out of a desire to uplift and connect. Such praise is often tied, directly or indirectly, to a person’s relationship with the s tandards of a specific group or institution. Sadly, such praise can easily reduce an individual’s dignity to their level in line with the group’s expectations rather than supporting their inherent (固有的) dignity and worth. So, what’s a better way?One answe r is to exit the game of “right and wrong” and enter a more life-giving focus on what needs are present. Returning to our example above, when you see that someone has lost weight andyou want to give them a praise, just pause and take a deep breath. Simply ask, “How are you doing?” See them and hear them. Appreciate them as a person of limitless value. Know there may be much more to their inner world than meets the eye. Similarly, when you see someone’s success in school, appreciate the hard work they put i nto it. Ask with gentle curiosity, “How’s it been for you?” Listen with your full attention that in itself can be a rare gift in today’s hustle and bustle world.By maintaining your concern and listening to the ways they want to be accompanied and supported — even when it might not be your first instinct — you can see them as a whole person, with complex feelings, very human needs, and inherent dignity.12. What does the underlined word “backfires” in paragraph 1 refer to?A.Improves the situation. B.Shows sincere concern.C.Removes hurtful feelings. D.Produces an unexpected result.13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A.Analyzing the phenomenon. B.Listing another example.C.Presenting the solution. D.Making a proposal.14. Why does the author suggest simply asking “How are you doing”?A.To start a light conversation.B.To focus on one’s inner needs.C.To explore the secret of keeping slim.D.To show appreciation for one’s efforts.15. What might be the title for the text?A.Say No to the “Right or Wrong” GameB.Why We Need to Make Praises to Others.C.Follow Me and Be a Qualified TherapistD.How Innocent Words can Be HarmfulAs we dive into the New Year with fresh resolutions, a big question is: How long are we going to stick with them? 16 But there is a strategy known as SMART can help both in setting goals and sticking with them.Specific. In daily life, we’re driven by our habits, which come easily. We can drive, listen to the radio and chew gum at the same time. 17 We need to get rid of distractions and stay focused. Mastering a new skill is slow going, so it’s best to be clear on our aim.Measurable. When it comes to goals, there’s often a divide between intention and action. One way to bridge this gap is to track what we’ve achieved eac h day. 18 So, if you’re learning to play the piano, log your practice. If your aim is to eat better, journal your meals.Achievable. 19 It’s a reality check on how much time and resources you have to devote to it. And, it sometimes begs a bigger question: Why should I commit to this goal?Relevant. Goals and values should be connected. We may spend years living out other people’s dreams for us. If you’re extrinsically (外在地) motivated, you may power through. But you may not be happy with the outcome, even if you’re very successful. 20Time-bound. It’s important to set goals that have clear time frames. Map out an action plan, and throughout the year you can refer back to the plan.Set concrete goals and plan a pain forward. When you’re filling your days with tasks and activities in line with your goals, it’s time well spent. There are many examples of everyday kindnesses we often take for granted.Last night, during my eldest son’s basketball game, we ________ to be sitting next to a lady with a young son. cracked(破解)the code. But while this may seem like a great step forward in science, some also believe that it's one step back when it comes to ethics. In August,a group of scientists from the US and South Korea worked together to successfully edit a human embryo and remove a genetic mutation(突变)that would have led to heart disease, reported The Guardian. This was achieved with the help of CRISPR,a gene-editing tool that allows scientists to"cut and paste"human DNA.Although this was the first example of an embryo's genes being changed successfully, the benefits of gene editing have already been tested in living patients.In2015,a five-month-old girl from the UK was saved after doctors used edited cells to fight off her cancer. As of today, she's alive and well. And in the US last year, scientists managed to remove HIV cells from several patients by editing the genes inside their bodies. Some people hope that in the future, diseases or birth detects could simply be"edited out".However, others believe this could lead to so-called designer babies, giving parents the option to choose everything from eye color to intelligence."You could find wealthy parents buying the latest‘upgrades'for their children, leading to even greater inequalitythan we already live with,"Marcy Darnovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics, told BBC News.In spite of these ethical concerns, experts say it's not possible to create the"perfect"human being.Despite the progress scientists have made,We don't understand human genes enough to give all unborn child great brainpower or amazing singing abilities."Right now,we know nothing about genetic enhancement,"Hank Greely,a director of sciences at Stanford University,US,told The New York Times."We're never going to be able to say, honestly,‘This Earlier this year,my oldest daughter got braces(矫正器)on her teeth, and let’s just say she did not go quietly into that dentist’s chair.Fear andhate pretty much describe the days leading up to her first appointment. So when she finally walked out with shiny teeth,a sore(疼痛的)mouth and a broken spirit,I told her I was proud of her and took her to Ben &Jerry’s for an ice cream reward. Two weeks later,we returned to the scene of the crime. The dentist spent about 45 seconds checking her teeth before sending her on her merry way. Before I could start the car, she was placing her ice cream order. She was shocked when I told her that she wasn't going to get a reward every time we get her teeth checked.Clearly, she’s not alone.According to some parenting experts, kids are easily addicted to a benefit—producing system of parental rewards and bribes—it’s not all ice creams, candies and cool toys. Some parents are offering their children prizes to just let them sit down and behave in a restaurant—or sleep in their own beds—or score a goal in the next soccer game. While the experts agree that occasional awards are okay, the danger lies in the system’s overuse.Kids quickly gaina sense of entitlement(应得的权利),where they come to expecta big reward for every good thing that they do,no matter how small. To keep things in check, experts say parents shouldreduce the number of rewards they offer, make sure rewards match the behavior and explain the real benefits of behaving for the sake of behaving.Have you used bribery or a reward system with your kids? In Britain and other countries, young people sometimes take a“gap year”,a year off between high school and college. This idea never gained a big following in America.Recent news reports have suggested that interest may be growing, though there are no official numbers.Charles Deacon,.Dean of Admissions at Georgetown University in Washington,D.C.,estimates that in the current first-year class of 1,600 students, only about 25 decided to take a year off.He says this number hasn’t changed much over the years. Mr.Deacon says the most common reason for taking a“gap year”is to have a chance to travel, but he saysinternatio nal students may take a“gap year”to meetrequirements at home for military duty. Some high school graduates see a year off as a chanceto recover after twelve years of required education, but it can also give students a chance to explore their interests.Students hoping to be doctors, for example, could learnabout the profession by volunteering in a hospital. Many colleges and universities support gap-year projects by permitting students to delay their admission.Expels saystudents can grow emotionally and intellectually as they work at something they enjoy. The Harvard admissions office has an essay on its Website called“Time Out or Bum Out for the Next Generation.’’It praises the idea of taking time off tostep back, think and enjoy gaining life experiences outsidethe pressure of studies. It also notes that students are sometimes admitted to Harvard or other colleges partly because they did something unusual with that time.Of course,a gap year is not for everyone.Students might miss their friends who go on directly to college, andparents might worry that their children will decide not to go to college once they take time off.Another concern is money.A year off, away from home, can be costly.Holly Bull’s job is to specialize in helping students plan their gap year. She notes that several books have been written about this subject. She says these books along with media attention and the availability ofinformation on the Internet have increased interest in the idea of a year off, and she points out that many gap-year programs cost far less than a year of college.1.What is the passage mainly about?A.It is likely that taking a“gap year”is becoming popular in America.B.More and more American students are choosing to take a year off.C.If you want to go to an American university, take a gap year first.D.Americans hold different opinions towards students’taking a“gap year”.2. How many reasons for students’ taking a“gap year”are mentioned in the passage?A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.3. The essay“Time Out or Bum Out for the Next Generation.”suggeststhat______.A.every studen t must take a“gap year”before applying for a famous universityB.some famous universities encourage students to gain morelife experiencesC.taking a‘gap year’Can make students free from life learningD.the stress of studies does harm to the students’ health4. 山东省青岛市2021-2022学年高三上学期期末检测英语试题及答案
It’s a particularly cruel change of nature that we can’t see ourselves as others do. We see our own face so often that the wrinkles that start to cut through it just go unnoticed. Occasionally we might get a rude awakening when suddenly our bodies stop working as expected but, for the most part, we’re left to get on with growing old without too many reminders. But when you get a reminder...oof! Since that show aired, I have sat in front of the mirror analyzing my face and wondering how I came to look so like my mother without noticing. I’ve also realized that my waist no longer fits into baby fat but a middle-aged spread.
Since then, I’ve started to redefine myself. I don’t want to put everything down to age but I can’t quite stop myself. Tired again? Must be my age. Thank God then for social media. All around me I see amazing women at the other end of their 40s. They’ve accepted their age and seem to love it, so I’m hopeful that as I move into the next decadethatwill be me too. And maybe I’ll get the Porsche before I’m 50.

英语_山东省青岛市2021届高三上学期期末教学质量检测考试英语试题(含答案)

山东省青岛市2021届高三上学期期末教学质量检测考试英语试题一、阅读选择1. The act of social distancing(社交距离)has become an effective protective measure against the novel coronavirus(冠状病毒)and a part of everyday life across the world. Many countries have launched different social distancing measures. Some are strict while others are creative. Let's take a look at three special quarantine(隔离)measures around the world.PanamaWith more than 3, 000 confirmed cases by April 12, the Central American country Panama has announced strict quarantine measures. One of them is to separate people by gender(性别)to go out.Starting in April, males in the country are required to leave home on Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday while females can go out on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week. No one is allowed to go out on Sundays. To further prevent the spread of COVID-19, citizens are able to leave their homes for only two hours at a time."This absolute quarantine is for nothing more than to save your life," the country's security minister Juan Pino said at a news conference. But according to the Guardian, the quarantine measures do not apply to civil servants or other essential staff who are battling against the novel coronavirus on the frontline.ColombiaID numbers are unique identification tools for individuals, but they may also be used to decide when people can go out in Colombia during the novel coronavirus pandemic. According to the BBC, people in some Colombian towns are allowed to be outside based on the last digit of their national ID number. For example, in northwest-central Colombia, people with an ID number ending in zero, four or seven are allowed to leave the house on Monday, while those with an ID number ending in one, five or eight can go outside on Tuesday. Similar quarantine measures have been proposed in the nearby country of Bolivia.FranceThough outdoor exercise is a good way to keep healthy, it can sometimes cause too many people to gather in one place. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Paris has banned all outdoor exercise between 10 am and 7 pm.Outside of this time span, people are allowed to exercise individually as long as it's for less than an hour and within one kilometer of their home. If people break the rule, they will face fines of between €135(about 1, 040 yuan)and €375.(1)What can we learn about Panama's social distancing measures?________A No one can go out for dinner, starting in April.B All citizens should follow the rules of going out by gender.C Ordinary citizens can stay outside for at most two hours at a time.D Civil servants are allowed to go out every day except onSundays..(2)Which group is allowed to go out on Mondays in northwest-central Colombia, during the novel coronavirus pandemic?________A Females.B Males.C Those with an ID number ending in one, five or eight. D Those with an ID number ending in zero, four or seven..(3)Which of the following follows the rules in France?________A Cycling around one's home at 5 pm.B Playing basketball with friendsat 8 pm. C Playing badminton in front of one's house at noon. D Jogging alone near one's home from 8 am to 8:30 am..2.My 11-year-old daughter has been awarded an academic scholarship(奖学金)to a private school. It's only a small discount(折扣), but the scholarship means she'll skip the waiting list—provided my husband and I can cover $20,000 a year.Should we pay the private school fees, or choose free education instead?I always assumed my children would go to a private school, like I did. Not because my family is wealthy, but because I believe that the best education is private. It took years for me to make peace with the fact that my two children attended our local public primary school. They'll go to a private high school, I told myself. Yet here we are. My eldest is now in herlast year of primary school, and my husband and I will struggle to afford private school. If we're to send our girl to private school, I could increase my work hours. My law degree was supposed to be my ticket to a good job and a solid income, but that's not quite how it turned out.The guilt and expectations are mine alone. I'm terrified that my daughter's potential will be wasted at the public school. And yet, I know that working more hours will crush(压垮)me. During many sleepless nights, I felt troubled by the decision. Although I want the best for my daughter, I have my own dreams too. I can't sacrifice everything for my precious girl. I explain that I want to be a positive role model for my daughter, and an unhappy parent is a terrible strain on a family. I point out that not even the privilege of private school will protect my children from disappointment or struggle. And finally, it's decided. My daughter is going to the public school behind our home. She couldn't be more pleased. It's taken me a little longer, but now I'm content. More than my fancy private school education, it's my family that shaped me. With high school now 25 years in the past, I can no longer remember the mathematical problems and Shakespearean quotes I once knew so perfectly. The lessons from my childhood home, however, have proved impossible to forget.(1)Why did the author want her daughter to go to a private school at first?A Her daughter earned an academic scholarship.B She wanted her daughter to receive the best education.C She wanted her daughter to skip the waiting list.D Her daughter's potential was wasted at the public primary school.(2)The author finally let her daughter go to a public school mainly because she realized that ________.A private school doesn't guarantee a solid incomeB she didn't want her daughter to struggle in private schoolC however hard she worked, she couldn't afford private schoolD public school is the most balanced choice for her family(3)When the decision was made, ________.A the author's daughter was disappointedB the author felt sorry and guilty aboutit C both the author and her daughter were content with the result D the author inspired her daughter to be a positive role model at school(4)What is the main message the author intends to convey in the last paragraph?A Family influences a child's growth more than school education.B The lessons learned during our childhood will stay with us forever.C It always takes people a long time to make a right decision.D Private school education is not as good as people expect.3. After astronaut Rusty Schweickart looked down at the Earth from space for the first time, he described a sense of awe that has become common to almost every space traveler since. “You realize that on that little blue and white thing there is eve rything that means anything to you, all history and music and poetry and art and death and birth and love, all of it on that little spot out there you can cover with your thumb.” No matter what country you’re from, you return from space with a feeling that our home is tiny, fragile, and something we need to protect.Anyone who reads the new book Growth by one of my favorite thinkers will come with similar urgency. The author, Czech-Canadian profe Vaclav Smil, approaches things from a scientist’s point of view, but he reaches the same conclusion: The Earth is fragile and “before it is too late, we should launch the most fundamental task of making any future growth consistent with the long-term preservation of cur planet.”Before I get into how Smil came to this conclusion, I should warn you. Although Growth is a brilliant combination of everything we can learn from patterns of growth in the natural and human-made world, it’s not for everyone. Long sections read like a textbook or an engineering guidebook. And it has 99 pages of references! The book covers everything from agriculture to steel production to smartphone use. Smil’s goal is to show that no matter what field you’re talking about, eventually you hit growth limits. As Smil writes, “My aim i s to explain varieties of growth in evolutionary and historical perspectives and to appreciate both the accomplishments and the limits of growth in modern ivilization…”I don’t agree with all of his analysis. In particular, I'm more optimistic than he is about the degree to which today’s renewable energy technologies carl be used, and the pace at which scientists and engineers will develop new clean sources. In my view, Smil underestimates our accelerating ability to model the physical world using digital technologies equipped with artificial intelligence. But I've always felt that Smil’s great strength isn’t predicting the future, but documenting the past. There’s great value in that—you can’t see what’s coming next if you don’t understand what’s co me before. Nobody sees the big picture with as wide an aperture(光圈孔径) as Vaclav Smil.(1)What does the underlined phrase “similar urgency” refer to in paragraph 2?A To protect our home is difficult.B It’s too late to protect the Earth.C The Earth means everything to us.D We need to protect the fragile Earth.(2)What’s the writing style of the book Growth?A Causal.B Academic.C Humorous.D Straightforward.(3)How does the writer of this article feel about the renewable energy technologies?A Anxious.B Objective.C Optimistic.D Pessimistic.(4)What information does the last paragraph intend to tell us?A Smil intends to document the history.B Smil sees the world from a greatangle. C Smil shows great concern for the future. D Smil describes a promising future for us.4. Solving great space mysteryMonkey King, the hero in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, is making headlines again. On Nov 30, China’s Dark Matter Particle Explorer(DAMPE, 暗物质粒子探测卫星), which is named after Monkey King’s Chinese name Wukong, found mysterious signals in the universe that may help scientists learn more about dark matter, according to Xinhua News Agency.“This is the first time scientists have found such detailed and precise signals, ” Chang Jin, vice director of the Purple Mountain Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国紫金山天文台), told Xinhua.Dark matter is a type of hypothetical(假设的)matter in the universe. Scientists believe that it influences the movement of galaxies. However, no one has ever directly observed it. Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky first used the term “dark matter” in 1933, when he spotted something very unusual. Some galaxies that Zwicky saw were spinning so fast that they should have scattered into all comers of the universe, but they didn’t. He realized there must have been something else there that had a strong enough gravitational pull to hold everything together. He called it“dark matter”.In one sense, dark matter is like the wind: we can’t see it, but we know it’s there.Finding out more about dark matter could help us understand how the universe began, but being ab le to do so isn’t easy. Scientists believe that when two dark matter particles crash together, they form new particles and produce high amounts of energy and heat. This is why explorers like Wukong are sent to find such particles.Indeed, “Wu” means “understanding” and “kong” means “void(空的). ” The nickname symbolizes the main goal of DAMPE’s mission, which is to understand dark matter better.Since its launch in 2015, DAMPE has already recorded 3. 5 billion high-energy particles, reported Newsweek. And according to Science, the satellite has a lifespan of five years, which means it still has three more years to “understand the void”. “DAMPE has opened a new window tor observing the high-energy universe, unveiling new physical phenomena beyond our cu rrent understanding, ” Chang told Xinhua.(1)On Nov 30, DAMPE________.A was named Wukong by Chinese scientistsB was successfully launched intospace C located dark matter in the universe for the first time D detected clear signals related to dark matter(2)According to the text, dark matter________.A is a spinning galaxyB is a type of gravitational pullC is made up of invisible particles that hold galaxies togetherD makes mysterious stars scattered in the universe(3)According to the text, a better understanding of dark matter could help scientists discover________.A the movement of galaxiesB the origin of the universeC how crashes happen between dark matter particlesD how to make use of high energy caused by crashes(4)What can we learn about DAMPE from the text?A It has recorded 35 billion high-energy particles so far.B It will be able to keep working for another five years.C It was made to observe and identify dark matter in the universe.D It could help prevent dark matter particles crashing together.二、信息匹配5.根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

However, rain isn’t just made of water anymore—it’s partly made of plastic.Millions of tiny pieces of plastic, called microplastics, are wandering around Earth’s atmosphere and traveling across entire continents according to a study published in one journal on April 12.Microplastics are plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter and come from a number of sources. Plastic bags and bottles released into the environment break down into smaller and smaller bits. Some microplastics are produced deliberately to provide abrasion(研磨)in products, such as toothpaste and cleansers. Another major source is your washing machine. When you wash clothing, tiny microfibers get washed away with the wastewater. Even though the water is treated by a wastewater plant, the microplastics remain, and they are released into the sea.Plastic rain may remind people of acid rain, but the former is far more widespread and harder to deal with. The tiny particles, too small to be seen with the naked eye, are collected by the wind from the ground. They are so light that they stay in the air to be blown around the globe. As they climb into the atmosphere, they are thought to act as nuclei (核心) around which water vapor (水蒸气) combines to form clouds. Some of the dust falls back to land in dry conditions, while the rest comes down as rain.Microplastics have been found everywhere you can imagine. From fish and frogs to mice and mosquitoes, their bodies have been found on average to contain 40 pieces of microplastic. As the top of the food chain, humans are exposed to microplastics, too. “We live on a ball inside a bubble,” microplastic researcher Steve Allen said. “There are no borders, there are no edges. It rains on the land and then gets blown back up into the air againto move somewhere else. There’s no stopping it once it’s out.”4. What do we know about microplastics?A. Since last year, Natalie, 15, hasbeen taking lost or thrown — away fishing nets and rope and transforming them into bracelets, rope art, mats, baskets and necklaces.Last year, Natalie was working on an assignment for her science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) class. As part of the assignment, she learned about “ghost nets”, which are fishing nets that have been left or lost in the ocean by people who fish.“They have huge effects on our environment. They can kill coral reefs and many animals,” said Natalie. “46 percent of the Pacific garbage is ghost gear.” The Great Pacific Garbage is a huge collection of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean betweenHawaiiandCalifornia.Natalie told her mom she wanted to do something to help. She got in touch with a handful of charities, including the Sea Protection Society and Coastal Action. After getting some shipments of ghost nets and rope from those organizations, Natalie, with the help of her family, started turning thediscardedgear into new artworks. “We've made bracelets, rope art, mats, baskets, and we've made necklaces, which also use beach glass in them,” she said. Natalie then started selling the artworks online, the crafty buying and selling website. She donated all her profits-minus a small sum of change to cover supplies — to the charities that donated fishing supplies to her. She's also been donating all the income from her non-profit business, called Nautical Waters, to charity. These activities can range from activities during normal school hours to after-school activities. No matter the time, these activities should be available to every student, and at Victory Pioneers International Schools (V.P.I.S) it is encouraged that every student participate in at least one activity, educational and recreational. One of the primary reasons school activities are important at V.P.I.S. is because it gives students the exercise they might not normally receive. Most popularly, these types of activities include major sports such as football, basketball, baseball, tennis, track and field and soccer but also might include gymnasium games and other games.Activities during V.P.I.S. also make a good impression on colleges if students are planning to pursue more education. Colleges look for students who do not just go to school and go home after school. These activities range from participating in clubs and sports to volunteering after school at a recreation center or having a part-time job. If a college sees you maintained good grades while participating in these activities, it will be impressed.V.P.I.S. activities also allow students to be creative. Gifted-and-talented activities allow gifted students to participate in what they otherwise would never have experienced in the classroom. They are a great way to allow students to be creative. Additionally, participating in clubs such as drama that appeal to students’ interest also allows them to expand their knowledge and be creative.Students also can have their interests expanded by participating in activities. These activities could consist of anything, such as joining the Future Business Leaders, the school’s debate team and the chess team, to name a few. By participating in these activities, a student might realize he is interested in something he never knew he was interested in before.8. What can we learn about activities at V.P.I.S.?A. Not every student has access to them.B. Students are required to take part in them after school.C. They give students exercise that might not be got in other schools.D. Educational activities are more popular with the students.9. What benefits can the students get from the activities?A. They can get extra grades when applying for colleges.B. They will become more gifted and talented .C. They may expand their knowledge in drama.D. They may better know their own interests.10. Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?A. The Benefits of V.P.I.S. ActivitiesB. School-related Activities at V.P.I.S.C. Colleges Need Creative StudentsD. Activities Make You Creative11. Where is the passage probably from?A. A scientific magazine.B. A college application guideline.C. A club introduction.D. The website of V.P.I.S.DHave you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? How annoying! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents.Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat, so they rarely have weight problems. To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic (基因的) factors. They also believe they have now identified the genes that may cause this tendency. These genes, according to the scientists, get passed down the generations. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines thatcan target the genes and stop people from gaining weight. The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the numbers of people who are overweight continues to grow. In theUnited States, over seventy percent of the population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illness such as high blood pressure and heart disease.Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects, suchas heart problems. However, it takes a long time to develop and thoroughly test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.12. According to the scientists, some people ________.A. are able to stay thin because of genetic factorsB. can eat what they want and stay healthy foreverC. usually keep doing exercise to lose their weightD. don’t eat anything every day but still put on weight13. Some people don’t need to worry about weight problems because ________.A. they eat many vegetablesB. they eat less than othersC. they don’t store any energy from food as fatD. they can burn off the extra food without making fat14. What can we learn from the passage?A. Fewer people will have weight problems in the future.B. People with weight problems may suffer from heart trouble.C. We now have good medicine for people with weight problems.D. The result of the experiments on mice and humans are different.15. What does the last paragraph imply?A. Current medicine solve weight problems well.B. We should exercise regularly and eat properly.C. Taking exercise every day may cause heart problems.D. Testing new drugs is hard because of the side effects.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

A recent report, which examined in detail the reading habits of primary-school children.showed that even seven-year-old boys and girls have clear views about what they want to read. Girls,in general, read more, and far more girls than boys preferred reading stories. Boys were showing a taste for the more instant appeal of picture stories,or else books about their hobbies. These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers. Apparently girls read more in general, but more fiction in particular .You could say that there are more opportunities for girls to read fiction:magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their early teens, and by their late teens they have probably moved on to the adult women’s magazines.Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their hobbies:motorcycles, heavy transport and to on.Adult reading tastes are also the subject of research.Again the number of women who read for pleasure is considerably higher than the number of men. It seems that the majority of women still want love stories. There has also been some analysis of what men actually read Apparently only 38 percent of men read anything, but 50 percent of what they read is fiction in the form of action-packed(内容丰富有趣的)stories of space or gunmen33.
