江西历年学位英语考试真题Part1 Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are fourchoices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choiceand mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single linethrough the center.Passage OneQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:After reading so much, you may wonder how to make a book. It’s time for you to have a try!Have you ever wondered how a book is made? It takes a lot of people to make a book. It can take months, or even years, for a book to go from an idea to a finished product.A book begins when an author comes up with an idea for a book. Authors get ideas in different ways. They may get ideas from their own lives, from watching the world around them, orfrom reading.Next, an author may plan the book by making an outline ( 提纲 ). Sometimes authors do research to gather information. They may read books or articles. They may interview people orvisit places. Then, the author begins to write. Authors may write for months or years to finish a manuscript. A manuscript is the text an author produces for publication. Finally, the author sends the completed manuscript to a publisher. If the publisher decides topublish the book, the author works with an editor. An editor reads the manuscript. Then he or sherecommends changes to improve the book. A copy editor reads the manuscript to correct anygrammatical mistake. After an author makes the suggested changes, a designer may decide how the book will look. The designer may choose the size, shape, and type styles for the book. Some picture book authorscreate their own illustrations(插图). If not, an illustrator is chosen to create pictures for the book. The illustrator makes sketches of pictures that will go on each page. The sketches are sent tothe publishing company. The editor makes sure the pictures clearly tell the story. The designerchecks how the words and pictures will fit together on the pages.2After the design changes are made, the illustrator begins creating the final pictures. He or shemay change the colours, the perspective, or the composition of pictures. It may take months tocreate all the pictures. The finished art is then sent to the publisher. The designer adjusts(调整)how the picturesand words fit together on the pages. The completed pages are sent to the printer. Many books arestill made into books with paper pages. The printer uses huge printing presses to make the pages. The pages are fixed together. Thebook cover is added. The finished books are then sent to the publisher’s warehouse. They arestored there until they are bought by libraries and bookstores.E-readers have changed how some books are made. Some authors do not use a publisheratall. Instead of sending a manuscript to a publisher, some authors turn their manuscripts intoeBooks themselves. Finally, an author’s eBook is uploaded(上传)to virtual bookstores on theInternet. Customers can buy and download eBooks from these websites.1. According to the passage, the designer’s job is to ________. [单选题] *A. create pictures for the book.B. make an outline of the book.C. decide how the book will look.(正确答案)D. correct grammatical mistakes in the book.2. Your first book will be published soon. What will first happen to it after the illustrator hascreated the final pictures? [单选题] *A. B.C.(正确答案)D.3. The writer uses the LAST paragraph to ________. [单选题] *A. introduce the history of eBooks.B. describe the disadvantages of eBooks.C. show the development of making a book.(正确答案)D. ask customers to support authors in making a book.4. The writer explains how to make a book by ________. [单选题] *A. giving causesB. showing steps(正确答案)C. providing examplesD. expressing opinions5. What is the best title for the passage? *A. From Idea to Book(正确答案)B. Different Kinds of BooksC. Workers in the Publishing HouseD. Between Publishers and CustomersPassage TwoGrown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming foryears can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle aftermany years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother whohas not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning , which can be stated as follows: Once we havelearned something, additional learning trials(尝试) increase the length of time we will rememberit. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves ofwords such as "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables(乘法口诀表) are an exception to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things weoverlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming(突击学习) for an examination, though itmay result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, astudent may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, but he is likely soon toforget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary forone's future development.6. What is the main idea of paragraph 1? [单选题] *A. People remember well what they learned in childhood.(正确答案)B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups.C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words.D. Stories for children arc easy to remember.7. What does the word "they" in Paragraph 4 refer to? [单选题] *A. Commonly accepted rules.B. The multiplication tables.(正确答案)C. Things easily forgotten.D. School subjects.10. What is the author's opinion on cramming? [单选题] *A. It leads to failure in college exams.B. It's helpful only in a limited way.(正确答案)C. It's possible to result in poor memory.D. It increases students' learning interest.Passage ThreeQuestions1 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Not so long ago, most people didn’t know who Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was justanother Jamaican teenager without much of a future. However, one person wanted to change this.Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly-Ann at a track meet and was convincedthat he had seen the beginnings of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but evenso, he sensed there was something trying to get out, something the other coaches had overlookedwhen they had assessed her and found her lacking. He decided to offer Shelly-Ann a place in hisvery strict training sessions. Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few years later atJamaica's Olympic trials in early 2008, Shelly-Ann, who at that time only ranked number 70 in theworld, beat Jamaica's unchallenged queen of the sprint (短跑).“Where did she come from?” asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear againwithout signs. But Shelly-Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At theBeijing Olympics she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 meters Olympic gold. She did it again oneyear on at the World Championships in Berlin, becoming world champion with a time of 10.73 —the fourth fastest time ever.Shelly-Ann is a little woman with a big smile. She has a mental toughness that did not comeabout by chance. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on earth has been anything butsmooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica's toughest inner-city communities known asWaterhouse, where she lived in a one-room apartment, sleeping four in a bed with her mother andtwo brothers. Waterhouse, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica, is a really violent andoverpopulated place. Several of Shelly-Ann's friends and family were caught up in the killings;one of her cousins was shot dead only a few streets away from where she lived. Sometimes herfamily didn't have enough to eat. She ran at the school championships barefooted because shecouldn't afford shoes. Her mother Maxime, one of a family of fourteen, had been an athlete herselfas a young girl, but, like so many other girls in Waterhouse, had to stop after she had her first baby.5Maxime's early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination toensure that her kids would not end up in Waterhouse's roundabout of poverty. One of the firstthings Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready tosacrifice everything. It didn't take long for Shelly-Ann to realize that sports could be her way out of Waterhouse. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2008, all those long, hard hours of work and commitmentfinally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, surrounded by criminals and violence, had written a new chapter in the history of sports. But Shelly-Ann's victory was far greater than that. The night she won Olympic gold in Beijing, the routine murders in Waterhouse and the drug wars in the neighbouring streets stopped. The dark cloud above one of the world's toughest criminal neighbourhoods simply disappeared fora few days. “I have so much fire burning for my country,” Shelly said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community centre in Waterhouse. Shehopes to inspire the Jamaicans to lay down their weapons. She intends to fight to make it awoman's as well as a man's world. As Muhammad Ali puts it, “Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them. A desire, a dream, a vision.” One of the things Shelly-Anncan be proud of is her understanding of this truth.11. Why did Stephen Francis decide to coach Shelly-Ann? [单选题] *A. He had a strong desire to free her family from trouble.B. He sensed a great potential in her despite her weaknesses.(正确答案)C. She had big problems maintaining her performance.D. She badly needed to set higher goals.C. Her sprinting career would not last long.(正确答案)D. Her talent for sprinting was known to all.13. What made Maxime decide to train her daughter on the track? [单选题] *A. players should be highly inspired by coachesB. great athletes need to concentrate on patienceC. hard work is necessary in one’s achievementsD. motivation allows great athletes to be on the top(正确答案)Passage FourQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:One evening in February 2007, a student named Paula Ceely brought her car to a stop on aremote road in Wales. She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path .That’s when sheheard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railwayline. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks.6Ceely’s near miss made the news because she blamed it on he GPS (导航仪). She had neverdriven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but itmade no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right intothe path of a speeding train,” she told the BBC.Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely’s story in his book When MachinesFail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, hesays, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker mighthave left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention.Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor singalling system. Or maybe someone hasstudied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with theGPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say. It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account ofthe advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. Heoffers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of thecountry. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’salso due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or somecombination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped byeconomics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces theremay be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings ofour machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably beenfooling us for just as long.16.What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident? [单选题] *A. She was not familiar with the road.B. It was dark and raining heavily then.C. The railway workers failed to give the signal.D. Her GPS device didn’t tell her about the crossing.(正确答案)17.The phrase “near miss” (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by______. [单选题] *A. close hitB. heavy lossC. narrow escape(正确答案)D. big mistake18. 大学英语作文篇集团标准化小组:[VVOPPT-JOPP28-JPPTL98-LOPPNN]H o w c a n w e b e n e f i t f r o m t r a v e l l i n g?In some countries young people are encouraged to travel for a year between finishing high school and university.?Why do so many parents allow their children to have such a trip in the most important stage of life??The answer is that it will benefit for their growth. How can we benefit from travelling??First of all, by traveling we can see many places read of in books, and visit some famous cities and scenic spots.?We will enjoy the beautiful scenery in different places, which we can be neverfelt from the book.Second, we will meet people with different interests and see strange and different things when we travel.?We can get ideas of the conditions and customs of other people, taste different foods and local flavors.?In this way, we can totally understand how differently other people live.Last but not the list, travel will not only help us keep healthy and make us less narrow-minded, but also help them expand their scope of knowledge, especially geographical and historical learning, which will arouse our deep love for our motherland.Learn English well without going to an English-speaking countryWithout doubt, if you would like to learn a sort of language well, the easiest method is staying in the atmosphere of that kind of language-speaking.?However, for Chinese, English learning has something different from others because English is more and more popular and can be learned well only in the domestic.?It is entirely possible to learn English well without being to an English-speaking country for a certain amount of time. How to do??Much can be done.?We, fore and most, can download and watch many English TV shows and movies with Chinese and English subtitles through the Internet.?It helps us to contact the English world and construct the learning atmosphere.?Furthermore, the number of foreigners who can speak pure English and come to China to study or work is significant increasing.?To make foreign friends is not a difficult thing, and communicating with them in public or school class helps to improve the ability of English-speaking.?Lastly, the learner attitudes have an important influence on mastering the knowledge of English.?The harder we take practice with effective and efficient method, the better our capability of English will be.In a word, attitude is everything, and we can gain good English skills when we really want to speak it fluently, even without living in an English-speaking country.we should be allowed outsiders to do self-study in universityclassroomsUniversity, a unique symbol of civilization, provide a place to people thinking and learning.?This place attracts so many students who have to try their best to past the university entrance exam to study and live.?However, there are still a lot of outsiders hoping to do self-study in university classrooms.?Should this behavior be allowed??As far as I am concerned, we should open the door and welcome them to learn with us.Why should we do that??Firstly, now that the outsiders choose the university classrooms as the learning place to do self-study, they would like the learning atmosphere there and be doing self-study quietly.?What is more, the university spread the spirit of care in society, which teach us to care others, and we should understandtheir feelings.?Lastly, when the outsiders have self-study in the classrooms, they also help the school to create a strong atmosphere of learning and thinking. In a word, the school should serve as a driving force, doing its utmost to encourage outsiders to do self-study in university classrooms, and the whole society will soon be populated with such a trend. Will paper books be replaced by e-books? Why or why not?In the period of electronic technology, the invention of e-books seems to be blessing to our students.?Some folks prefer electric ones to textbooks, for such books are obviously handy and convenient and they are conductive to their readers, who can obtain much relatively updated information.?However, will paper books be replaced by e-books??This question has brought in a heated discussion. There is no doubt that e-books are so convenient that people can easilyget them on the Internet with cheaper cost instead of spending a lot of money to buy a traditional one.?Moreover, it's more environmental-friendly and recourse-saving to read e-books as forests can be protected from being cut down to make paper. In this way, many people assert that traditional books may possibly disappear in the near future. But I don't think so.?Traditional books still occupy an important position and they will not be replaced by e-books completely.?First of all, it's an enjoyable time for someone wandering in the bookstore choosing the favorite books from the shelves.?Besides, it can be harmful to people's eyes when keeping staring at the screen for a long period of time.?With e-books, people cannot read for as long as you like, because they have to rest their eyes from time to time.?More importantly, it will be a pity for those book-collecting fans if there are only electronic books, as there will be no more beautifullyillustrated books to be placed orderly.?And the happiness when you finally find a book you've desired for so long will be gone forever. In conclusion, convenient as e-books may be, it cannot completely replace traditional books.?Just as the invention of the digital camera doesn't put an end to history of Chinese brush painting, traditional books are, and will still be a close friend of us.Never Humiliate Our TeachersNowadays there have been some examples that the students like to humiliate their teachers at school.?Is this a normal phenomenon??Asfor me, I think that the students want to make fun during the study life, however, they use the wrong way.?The causes for such happenings are as follows.Firstly, students always have the different thoughts with the teacher and sometimes they believe that the teacher play a role inthe bad guys in their daily life.?All of these may make the students dislike their teacher.?Secondly, students have to bear a tremendous amount of stress.?In this situation, the teachers who assign much homework may become the enemy that the students are st but not least, the students have no venom, because they just want to make some fun to cheer themselves up.?This is the main reason I think. In a word, no matter how boring the study life is, we should not humiliate our teachers absolutely.?Our teachers always hope that we can become more and more excellent.?If we do that, we should have broken their heart. Not to Be a Crazy StarchaserMaking track for a star, is a very common phenomenon in today's society. The young, especially teenagers, can spend a lot of money seeing their idols, even if it may take their living costs.?As for me, I think that it is foolish behavior for young people to become acrazy star-chaser.?It is obvious that there are lots of disadvantages to become a crazy star-chaser.?The reasons are as follows.Firstly, as the young, especially students, being crazy aboutstars may cost too much time in their heroes, instead of learning or working.?Secondly, many young people do not have a fixed income to offer their costs in attending their idols' concert or other activities.?It means that they have to ask their parents to support such stupid behavior.?Last but not least, many star-chasers do not care about their own healthy.?They prefer to spend much money in seeing the stars rather than have big meals or buy new clothes for themselves. In a word, as far as I am concerned, we can make track for starsin space time but not becoming a crazy stat-chaser.?Do not make the stars instead of your own life.Learning about the Past Lead to SuccessLearning about the past is like drinking a glass of elegant red wine, which leads a person to endless aftertastes.?If there is anyone who thinks that it is no value to learn about the history, I will refute this viewstrongly.?The reasons are as follows.Firstly, the past makes us remember the successful persons in ourhistory. The attitudes and spirits of them are valuable assets for us.?Perhaps a kind of quality learning from historical figures can have a positive influence on our whole life.?Secondly, the past helps us avoid the same mistakes and lessons.?When we learn about the past, we also improve our self-cultivation, which can help us distinguish between right and wrong.?After that, we may summarize the mistakes and lessons that happened in history.?Last but not least, the past leads us to achieve our goals.?The more we learn about the past, the fewer mistakes we will make and the sooner we will reach our goals.A good case in point is the communist party of China.?The reason why the communist party can lead the people to victory is that our party does well in learning the past, concluding the failures and sticking to fighting.?Therefore, as for me, I am totally sure that learning about the past has important valuefor those of us living in the present.Be Positive to Face the DiscriminationAs more and more companies regard the appearance as one of the standardsin the interview, many applicants have complained about the discrimination against their physical appearance.?As for me, however, I believe that the companies have their own reasons to set up this standard and I do not careabout the discrimination at all.?The reasons are as follows.Firstly, we all know that some jobs just like flight attendants in the service industry need the employees to have a good image.?These jobs have ahigh standard for appearance so that many people with ordinary appearance maybe rejected.?Is this called for discrimination??I do not think so.?Secondly, the evaluation of appearance is one part of the assessment of our work capabilities. Why do I say that??The reason is that the dress sense and the mental state have a deep relationship with our temperament.?If I fail to getthe job because of my appearance, I may think that my image and temperament do not match with this company but not feel the company discriminate against my physical stly, even if I am discriminated when I am trying to find a job, I would not feel upset and negative.?I would keep on practicing my abilities to make me more excellent. As far as I am concerned, we should stop complaining and become more positive to face the discrimination.?The gold will be always shining.。

托福写作范文之学习历史对现在没有任何作用吗?

托福写作范文之学习历史对现在没有任何作用吗?Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.I disagree wholeheartedly that learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. In fact, the definition of learning includes the idea of an accumulation of experiences from the past. Learning can only take place if we make an association between things that have happened in the past or between something in the past and something that we predict will happen in the future. All knowledge that we acquire as we grow is from the past-language, customs, academic subjects, and so on. While it may be helpful sometimes to be able to overlook previous knowledge in order to avoid the constraint conformity, the vast majority of knowledge that we learn is a huge boost-imagine if each of us had to discover by ourselves that 2 + 2 = 4! So, in a very real sense, all learning depends on past events. We are only able to live in this world with our current standard of living because we have learned from the past. We receive knowledge from the past and we are able to use it and improve it. We examine our actions in the past and we make judgments about what was right and what was wrong. Then, it is hoped, we will attempt to avoid those same mistakes again. For example, one of the great mistakes all over the world has been depriving women and the disempowered classes status in society and many industrialized and developing countries all over the world are attempting to avoid such mistakes both in the present and in the future.Furthermore, all of the knowledge that we have today is a result of all the work of our predecessors. The ancient Greeks developed geometry, which helped other European scientists analyze the solar system, which in turn gave us a new understanding of our place in the universe. The great majority of technology today depends directly on several thousands of years of work of past thinkers. To ignore the knowledge of the past would be to throw away five thousand years of history and experience. There is, however, some seemingly small, but important value to ignoring the past. It is often the case that history or tradition has the effect of constraining our thought in the present and many important philosophical and scientific breakthroughs have only been possible as a direct result of ignoring the past. The past, in a sense, can blind us to the truth, we can become bound by tradition. For example, at one time, leading thinkers in Europe thought that the Earth was at the center of the universe and those who disagreed were persecuted as heretics, even Copernicus, who we now know was correct about his heliocentric model of the Solar System. However, scientists were eventually able to break from the past and accept the new model of the universe. In short, learning from and analyzing the past has enormous value for us and life as we know it on Earth today would not be possible without the benefit of thousands of years of history and accumulated knowledge. It is important, however, to ignore the past so that we can make a step forward, and such free thinking should be encouraged, although not at the expense of past knowledge. Learning from the past is something like learning from our parents-in most cases, their past helps us have a better future, but there are times when we need to make a break from the past and make a bold step into an unknown future.。

Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present

Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present

Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the presentWhen it comes to the value of history, the discussion of this issue among individuals and in society as a whole has come into vogue during the last decade. The statement declares that “learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present.”I disagree with the ...there is a thing you have to know. The main reason for my propensity to the importance of history is that in the business world, there is a saying that you have to know where you have been and where you are in order to know where you are going...Furthermore, I agree that business corporations find it critical to have regular views of the past business performance without reservations since each corporation has to see what mistakes were made in order to avoid repeating them. Naturally, they learn from the past mistakes which prepare them for the future.Let’s bring our discussion to a more present and practical context. It can be given an example that Microsoft usually has regular views of its past performance, usually in the form of quarterly or annual review.Another equally essential aspect accounting for why I advocate the value of learning about the past involves the realm of politics and society. No one can deny that in the international arena, one must possess a thorough knowledge of history in order to understand the current dynamics and complex relationships among countries. Obviously, it is imperative that the politicians should learn from the past political mistakes. History is replete with evidence to demonstrate this point that the world community learned the great lesson from WWII that there must not be another world war thus we entered into 40 plus years of the cold war. However, we should concede that despite the merits of learning about the past, over extended referring to the past will be indeed counterproductive, even harmful. The harm it produces is, in my view, both palpable and profound. For the individual, it has a debasing impact on people’s originality; for the society, it may promote a tendency toward mechanism ossification. In sum, the advantages of referring to the past outweigh the disadvantages, but it is imperative to point out that whether historical information can actively affect our present life depends on whether we could take rational cognizance of the past and whether we could try to make breakthrough and whether we could learn from the past failures and success, especially from the failures.。

再聪明的人也会遇到问题英语作文

再聪明的人也会遇到问题英语作文

再聪明的人也会遇到问题英语作文Even the Smartest Minds Face Challenges. In the tapestry of life, woven with intricate threads of triumph and adversity, it is a universal truth that every individual, regardless of their intellectual prowess, will encounter challenges that test the limits of their abilities. Even the most brilliant minds, whose intellect illuminates the darkest corners of knowledge, are not immune to the obstacles that life presents.History is replete with examples of exceptional individuals who, despite their formidable intellect, faced formidable challenges that threatened to extinguish their flame. Albert Einstein, whose revolutionary theories transformed our understanding of the universe, struggled with dyslexia throughout his life. His difficulty with language haunted him, casting a shadow over his academic journey. Yet, he persevered, driven by an unyielding passion for knowledge and a belief in his own potential.Marie Curie, the pioneering physicist and chemist, faced countless barriers as a woman in a male-dominated field. Her unwavering determination and scientific brilliance, however, propelled her to become the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win the prestigious award in two different scientific fields. Her path was fraught with skepticism and prejudice, but she refused to be deterred, leaving an indelible mark on the world of science.Even in the realm of arts and literature, where imagination reigns supreme, challenges have tested the resilience of great minds. Vincent van Gogh, whose vibrant brushstrokes and emotional intensity continue to captivate audiences, endured years of poverty, mental illness, and social isolation. Despite these setbacks, he persisted in creating masterpieces that transcended his personal suffering and cemented his place as one of the most influential artists of all time.Similarly, William Shakespeare, the literary titanwhose plays have shaped our understanding of human nature, faced political turmoil and personal tragedy. His works reflect the complexities of life, exploring themes of love, loss, and the human condition. Through his characters, he grappled with universal struggles that continue to resonate with audiences centuries later. The challenges faced by these brilliant minds serve as a potent reminder that intelligence alone is not a guarantee of a smooth and problem-free existence. True resilience lies in the ability to confront adversity head-on, to draw upon inner strength, and to find opportunities for growth amidst life's trials. While intelligence can illuminate the path, it is the human spirit, with its capacity for perseverance, adaptability, and resilience, that ultimately determines our ability to overcome obstacles. Challenges are not merely obstacles to be surmounted but opportunities to refine our character, to learn from our mistakes, and to emerge stronger on the other side.In the face of adversity, it is tempting to despair, to question our abilities, and to succumb to self-doubt. However, it is in these moments that we discover the true measure of our strength. By embracing challenges, by refusing to let setbacks define us, and by drawing upon the support of others, we unlock the potential for personal growth and triumph. The journey of life is not a straight line but a winding path strewn with obstacles. Even the smartest minds will encounter challenges that test their limits. The key to success lies not in avoiding these challenges but in confronting them with courage, determination, and an unwavering belief in our own abilities. For it is through the crucible of adversity that we forge our character, strengthen our resolve, and ultimately achieve our greatest potential.。

忘掉以前所学的英语作文

忘掉以前所学的英语作文

忘掉以前所学的英语作文标题,Forget the Past: A Journey to Rediscover English。

Introduction:Forgetting the English I Once Knew: A Journey to Rediscovery。

English, once a language I thought I had mastered, now feels like a distant memory. It's as though the knowledge I once held has slipped through my fingers, leaving me grasping at fragments of what once was. But rather than lamenting the loss, I choose to embark on a journey of rediscovery. In this essay, I will explore the reasons behind forgetting the English I once learned, thechallenges it presents, and the strategies I employ to rekindle my proficiency in the language.Reasons Behind Forgetting:Reflecting on the past, I realize that several factors contributed to my forgetting of English. Firstly, lack of practice played a significant role. Life's demands pulled me away from regular usage, causing my language skills to deteriorate over time. Additionally, a shift in priorities led me to neglect opportunities for language enrichment, further exacerbating the situation. Moreover, the absence of immersion in an English-speaking environment limited my exposure to the language, making it easier for me to forget what I had learned.Challenges Faced:As I endeavor to relearn English, I encounter numerous challenges along the way. One of the most daunting obstacles is overcoming the fear of failure. The thought of making mistakes and feeling incompetent often hinders my progress, making it difficult to fully immerse myself in the learning process. Furthermore, the sheer magnitude of the task ahead can be overwhelming at times, leading to feelings of frustration and self-doubt. Additionally, finding the time and motivation to dedicate myself tolanguage learning amidst life's other obligations proves to be a constant struggle.Strategies for Rediscovery:Despite the challenges, I refuse to let my forgotten English remain a distant memory. Instead, I employ various strategies to facilitate my journey of rediscovery. Firstly, I commit to consistent practice, integrating English intomy daily routine through activities such as reading, writing, listening to podcasts, and engaging inconversation with native speakers. By exposing myself tothe language regularly, I aim to regain fluency and confidence in my abilities. Additionally, I seek out opportunities for immersion, whether through language exchange programs, cultural events, or travel to English-speaking countries. By surrounding myself with the language and culture, I hope to accelerate my learning process and deepen my understanding of English.Furthermore, I recognize the importance of setting realistic goals and tracking my progress along the way. Bybreaking down the overarching goal of language proficiency into smaller, achievable milestones, I can maintain motivation and measure my success over time. Moreover, I embrace a growth mindset, viewing setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than reasons to give up. By adopting a positive attitude and persevering in the face of adversity, I believe that I can overcome any challengesthat come my way. Conclusion:In conclusion, forgetting the English I once learnedwas not the end of my language journey but rather the beginning of a new chapter. Through introspection and determination, I am committed to rediscovering the language and reclaiming my proficiency. By identifying the reasons behind my forgetfulness, acknowledging the challenges I face, and implementing strategies for rediscovery, I am confident that I can once again fluently speak, read, and write in English. This journey is not without its obstacles, but I approach it with optimism and resilience, knowingthat the rewards of mastery will far outweigh thechallenges along the way. As I embark on this journey of rediscovery, I am reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela: "It always seems impossible until it is done." With perseverance and dedication, I believe that anything is possible, including reclaiming the English I once knew.。

描述在过去几年里学习英语的英语作文

描述在过去几年里学习英语的英语作文

描述在过去几年里学习英语的英语作文全文共3篇示例,供读者参考篇1Learning English - My JourneyHello, my name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I want to tell you about my experience learning English over the past few years. It has been a long journey with many ups and downs, but I've learned so much along the way! When I was just 6 years old, I started learning English in school. At first, it seemed really hard and confusing. There were so many new words to memorize and strange rules about grammar that didn't make sense. Why did we say "went" instead of "goed"? And what was the point of putting an "s" at the end of words sometimes? English felt like an impossible puzzle. But my English teacher, Mrs. Roberts, was really nice and patient. She used games, songs, and fun activities to teach us the basics. Slowly but surely, it started to click into place. I remember feeling so proud the first time I could introduce myself in English without messing up!As the years went by, English became more and more familiar. We learned new vocabulary words every week, covering topics like animals, food, colors, numbers, and more. Reading simple stories helped reinforce what I was learning. By 3rd grade, I could hold basic conversations and understand most of what my teacher said in English class. That's when we really kicked it up a notch and started getting into grammar concepts like verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and parts of speech. This was pretty confusing at first. How could I possibly keep track of when to use "is" versus "was" versus "will be"? But Mrs. Roberts had us do lots of practice activities and quizzes until it became second nature. One of the biggest challenges was pronunciation. English has so many weird letter combinations and exceptions to the rules. Words like "ough" can be pronounced completely differently depending on the word! I watched videos, listened to audio clips, and repeated phrases over and over until the proper pronunciations became engrained.Another big focus was reading and writing skills. We spent a lot of time silently reading short novels in class, with exercises to check our comprehension. For writing practice, we learned how to construct sentences, use capital letters and punctuation, andeventually how to write paragraphs and full essays. I still have my very first cringe-worthy essay about my summer vacation saved in a folder!Cultural knowledge was also really important for fully understanding English. We learned about holidays, traditions, and customs from English-speaking countries. It was fascinating to compare the differences, like how they celebrate Christmas versus how we celebrate it. Learning some basic slang and idioms like "piece of cake" and "it's raining cats and dogs" helped make English feel more natural.Of course, nothing helped my English skills more than actually using the language in real life. My parents got me started on some English TV shows for kids, which was a fun way to practice listening comprehension. We also took a family trip to Canada a few years ago, which allowed me to order food, ask for directions, and chat with locals in English. It was a little intimidating at first, but a great confidence booster. Now that I'm 10 years old and in 5th grade, I have a pretty solid grasp of English. I can read young adult novels, write multi-paragraph essays, understand movies and TV shows, and hold conversations with native speakers pretty comfortably. I'm so glad I stuck with it through those challenging early years.English has become one of my favorite subjects, and I really admire how many exceptions and quirks are built into the language. I'm thinking of joining the English Speakers' Club at school, where we get together to read English books, play vocabulary games, and debate different topics in English. It will be great practice!Of course, I know my English skills can always improve and grow. I still struggle sometimes with advanced grammar concepts like the subjunctive mood. And there's always more slang, idioms, and cultural references to learn about. But overall, I feel really proud of how far I've come. Looking back, it's amazing to think about how completely foreign English felt when I was 6 years old, compared to the total comfort and fluency I feel now.My journey learning English has taught me so much beyond just language skills. It showed me the value of perseverance, consistent practice, and not getting discouraged when things get difficult. It allowed me to broaden my horizons and understand different cultures better. And knowing a second language gives me more career options for the future. So while learning English wasn't necessarily easy, it was absolutely worth the effort. I'm excited to continue polishing myskills and discovering the amazing worlds that the English language can open up. I hope my story encourages other students to embrace the challenges of learning a new language. You got this!篇2My Journey Learning EnglishHi there! My name is Lily and I'm 10 years old. I've been learning English for a few years now and I wanted to share my experience with you. Get ready, because this is going to be a pretty long story!I still remember when I first started learning English back in first grade. My school had just introduced English classes and I was really excited! I couldn't wait to start learning this new language. On the first day of English class, my teacher Miss Johnson greeted us with a big smile and said "Hello everyone!" I had no idea what she was saying at the time, but I was still excited. In those early classes, we started by learning the English alphabet and very basic words like colors, numbers, and simple phrases like "hello" and "thank you." I worked really hard onmemorizing all the letters and their sounds. It felt like a whole new world was opening up to me!Miss Johnson made learning fun by having us sing songs and play games to practice the new words. One of my favorites was a game where she would hold up picture cards and we had to shout out the English word for what was on the card. If we got it right, we got a point! I was really competitive and always wanted to get the most points. As the weeks went by, we started putting words together into simple sentences. That's when things started getting trickier for me. English grammar and word order was so different from my native language. I remember struggling to make sentences like "The cat drank the milk" because in my language the structure is different. But I didn't give up! I just kept on practicing over and over.By the end of first grade, I could introduce myself in English, ask how someone was doing, talk about basic topics like weather, colors, numbers, and use polite phrases. I was really proud of how much I had learned in such a short time! My parents were excited too and encouraged me to keep working hard on my English. In second grade, we took our English learning to the next level. We started reading simple stories, watching video clips, and having basic conversations. Reading those first little books was not easy at all! I would look at the page and see a jumble of letters that made no sense to me at first. But by sounding out each word slowly and using the pictures for clues, I could eventually figure it out. Pretty soon I was zipping through those easy readers like a pro.I also loved watching the English videos and clips in class, even though I couldn't understand everything that was being said at first. But little by little, by picking up on words I knew and using the context clues from the images, I got better at comprehending spoken English too. Having conversations with my classmates felt awkward and unnatural at the beginning, but the more we practiced, the more comfortable I got. By the end of second grade, I could have a short basic dialog about my day, my likes and dislikes, and my family.Third grade was a real turning point in my English abilities. Not only did my vocabulary keep expanding rapidly, but I started understanding more complex grammar concepts like verb tenses, plurals, and sentence structures. My writing skills also improved a ton as we started keeping journals and writing simpleparagraphs. Reading got way easier too as the books we covered in class were longer but still at my level.By fourth grade, I felt like I had such a solid base in English that I could really take my skills up a notch. I started watching English TV shows, movies, and YouTube videos for kids. At first I could only catch a few words here and there. But as time went on, my listening comprehension improved dramatically just from getting exposed to so much spoken English through media.I also started reading more complicated English books and stories. Things like fairytales, legends, fiction and non-fiction were all things I could comprehend and enjoy reading in English. Writing also came much more naturally to me as I kept a journal to practice expressing my thoughts and experiences on paper. I could form paragraphs with a main idea, details, and examples. My conversations flowed more smoothly too and I no longer felt self-conscious speaking English with my classmates and teachers. Now that I'm in fifth grade, I feel like my English skills are pretty great for my age! Of course, I still have so much more to learn and improve on. But I'm able to understand English movies without subtitles, read chapter books easily, write essays and stories with depth, and converse on just about any topic thatcomes up. Learning English has opened up so many doors for me in terms of books I can read, media I can enjoy, and people I can communicate with.My advice to anyone starting to learn English is to not get frustrated! It's such a challenging language with so many crazy rules and inconsistencies. But if you stick with it and practice daily, even if it's just for a few minutes, it will get easier over time. Watch movies and shows in English, read English books, write in a journal, have conversations with friends. Immerse yourself in the language as much as possible! Most importantly, try to have fun with it and don't be afraid to make mistakes. That's the only way we learn and improve. I'm still making mistakes all the time in English, but I don't let that discourage me. Learning a new language is an incredible journey and I'm so glad I started mine at a young age. English has opened up a whole new world for me and allowed me to connect with people and ideas I never could have before.Whether you are a kid or an adult just starting out, keep at it and cherish the small victories along the way. They will all add up to something amazing - being able to speak, understand, read, and write in one of the most widely used and useful languages inthe world. I can't wait to see where my English skills will take me in the future!篇3My Journey Learning EnglishHello, my name is Emily and I'm 10 years old. I've been learning English for the past few years and I want to tell you about my experience. Learning a new language has been really exciting and challenging at the same time!I first started learning English when I was 6 years old. My parents enrolled me in an after-school English class. At first, I didn't really understand why I needed to learn another language.I already spoke my native language well. But my parents explained that English is very important for my future. It's like a bridge that can connect me to people and opportunities all over the world. In those early classes, we started by learning the English alphabet and very basic words like colors, numbers, and simple phrases. The teacher made it fun by having us sing alphabet songs and play games. I remember feeling proud when I could recite the alphabet perfectly! As I got a little older, things started getting harder. We moved on to learning vocabulary for different topics like food, animals, classroom objects, and more. There were so many new words to memorize! We also started learning basic grammar rules and sentence structures. One thing I really struggled with was pronunciation. English has so many sounds that are different from my native language. Words that look the same are sometimes pronounced completely differently, which was really confusing at first. Like the words "tough" and "though" – how can they sound so different when the letters are almost the same? My tongue got tied up so many times trying to make the proper sounds. But my teacher was really patient and gave us lots of practice listening to native speakers and repeating after them. Slowly but surely, my pronunciation got better over time. Even now, there are still some sounds that give me trouble sometimes. But I've learned that the more I use the language, the more natural it becomes. As the years went by, we progressed to more advanced skills like writing paragraphs, reading short stories, and having conversations. I remember the first time we had to write a whole paragraph in English – I thought it would be impossible! But withthe foundations we had built over the years, it got easier bit by bit.One of the biggest helps in my English learning journey has been using fun resources outside of class. My parents bought me English storybooks, videos, games and even music. At first, I could barely understand anything. But I kept listening and reading along, looking up words I didn't know. Amazingly, my comprehension slowly improved just from exposing myself to more and more English content that I enjoyed. These days, I've reached a pretty good level where I can communicate quite well in English. I can read chapter books, watch movies without subtitles, and have conversations about lots of different topics. Of course, I'm still making mistakes here and there. But I've learned that making mistakes is just part of the process. The more I use English, the more natural and comfortable it becomes.Looking back, I'm so glad my parents started me on this English journey from a young age. It definitely hasn't been easy –there were times I felt frustrated and discouraged, wondering if I would ever really "get it." But sticking with it and not giving up has paid off so much.Learning English has opened up so many opportunities for me already. I can make friends from all over the world online and understand movies/books from other cultures. I have more career options in the future since English is such a global language in business, technology, and so many fields. But beyond just the practical benefits, learning English has been an amazing way to expand my perspective and understanding of the world. Every language carries its own beautiful way of expressing ideas and experiences. Knowing English gives me a window into how English speakers think and view the world, which is quite different from my native way of looking at things. As I continue studying and using English, I know there will always be more to learn – new vocabulary, cultural references, slang, you name it. Language is constantly evolving. But that's what makes it so exciting and rewarding. With each new skill I acquire in English, whole new worlds and ways of thinking get unlocked within my mind.To any other kids out there learning English, my advice would be: Don't get discouraged! It's going to be really hard sometimes, but stick with it. Find English content you enjoy like movies, books, or songs and expose yourself to it as much as youcan. Use what you're learning in real conversations as much as possible. And most importantly, don't be afraid to make mistakes – that's how we learn and improve.Learning a new language opens up incredible opportunities and expands our perspective in ways we could never imagine at first. It's not always easy, but it's an amazing journey. I can't wait to see where my English skills will take me next! Maybe I'll write another essay like this in a few more years. Who knows, maybe my English will be even better than it is now. The path of language learning never ends, and that's the best part!。

Learning Without Reflection: The Dangers ofMere AcquisitionIn the ancient words of Confucius, "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous." These profound words echo through the ages, reminding us of the essential balance between acquiring knowledge and reflecting upon it. Merely accumulating information without digesting and understanding its deeper meanings can lead to confusion and even misguidance. Conversely, pondering without a solid foundation of knowledge can be perilous, as it may lack direction and substance. In today's era of information overload, the danger of learning without reflection is particularly acute. With the advent of the internet and social media, we are constantly bombarded with new information and opinions. It is easy to get caught up in the rush of acquiring more and more knowledge, without stopping to consider its implications and applications. However, this kind of learning is often superficial and short-lived, failing to produce lasting wisdom or understanding. To truly learn, we must engage with the material we are studying. We must ask questions, challenge assumptions, and connect new information to our existing knowledge. This active process of reflection transforms passive learninginto active understanding. It helps us to identify patterns, draw conclusions, and make informed decisions. In essence, reflection is the key to unlocking the full potential ofour learning experiences. Moreover, reflection fosters a deeper level of engagement with the world. As we reflect on our learning,we begin to see connections between different fields of knowledge and real-world situations. We become more awareof the social and ethical implications of our actions, and we are better able to empathize with others. This kind of understanding goes beyond mere facts and figures, enriching our lives with a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. However, it is important to note that reflection is not a substitute for acquiring new knowledge. Rather, it complements the learning process by helping us to makesense of what we have learned. Knowledge without reflection may be impressive, but it lacks the wisdom andunderstanding that come from deep contemplation. Conversely, reflection without a solid foundation of knowledge can become disconnected and abstract. In conclusion, the ancient wisdom of "Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous" remains relevant today. We must strive to balance the acquisition of knowledge with its reflection and application. Only then can we truly transform learning into wisdom and understanding. By engaging actively with the material we study, asking questions, and connecting new information to our existing knowledge, we can unlock thefull potential of our learning experiences and transform ourselves into more informed and enlightened individuals.**学而不思则罔:仅学习的危险**在孔子的古语中有这样一句话:“学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆。

TWE(31-40)/155 Harbin ( harbin@)31. It has recently been announced that a new high school may be built in your neighborhood. Do you support or oppose this plan? Why? Use specific reasons and details in your answer.I oppose having a new high school built in my neighborhood. Alth ough I know there’s a real need for a new facility, I have to say that I don’t want one built so close to me. I think it would cause a lot of problems.First of all, there are very few teenagers in this neighborhood, or in our suburban subdivision, for that matter. Most of the residents here are either retired or are just starting out with young children. This means that the kids coming to the new high school wouldn’t be walking. They would come on buses or would be driving to the school. Either way, this would mean a lot more traffic on our streets. In addition to the traffic on school days, there also would be traffic whenever there was a sporting event, such as a basketball or football game, or activities at the school. Would there be enough parking in the school lot for everyone attending those events? Probably not. Consequently, those extra cars would end up our neighborhood. My neighbors and I would also be upset about the loss of the park, which is the site that’s been selected for the high school. Mothers with young children gather there every morning for their kids to play together. People my age like to take a walk after dinner. On weekends, that park is a place for picnic and relaxation. We’d be sorry to lose our neighborhood park.I also have some concerns about all those young people being in our neighborhood. Would there be problems with drugs or fights? Could the school district guarantee us that security would be a priority? These are concerns that I don't think can be addressed sufficiently for me to support a new high school in my neighborhood.32 Some people spend their entire lives in one place. Others move a number of times throughout their lives, looking for a better job, house, community, or even climate. Which do you prefer: saying in one place or moving in search of another place? Use reasons and specific examples to support your opinion.Even though I have lived in the same house, in the same neighborhood, in the same city my entire life. I know I would be happy living in a variety of place. Moving would expose me to new people, new weather, and new housing.Even if I were to move to another part of my city, I would encounter new people. Each neighborhood has a distinct personality. When I move to that neighborhood, I would meet the shopkeepers and residents that shape that personality. I may even adopt part of there manner as my own so I could be recognized as part of that community. If I want to encounter different weather patterns, I would have to move beyond my city. Where I live now, it is the same temperature all year, I would like to go to a place where there are four seasons so I can experience really cold temperatures. I would like to walk in the snow and perhaps go skiing. I could learn winter sports if I lived in the north. Now of course, I live with my parents in their home. It is a one story house built around acourtyard where our family spends a lot of time. If I were to move, I would like to live in an apartment on a very high floor so I could see all around me. I could also meet my neighbors in the elevator and we could get together for coffee in my apartment. The more I move the more I would experience change. I would meet new people in every place I lived; I could move to sample countries with four seasons or even a continent like Antarctica which only has two. Wherever I lived, I would experience living in housing particular to that area. I would then be a citizen of the world, wouldn’t I? Could you call me a foreigner if I called everyplace my home?33. Is it better to enjoy your money when you earn it or is it better to save your money for some time in the future? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.“Save it for rainy day.” That’s my motto. When I have a choice between spending my money or putting it in my savings account at the bank, I always put it in the bank.I will have a lot of expenses in the future like my education, travel, and unforeseen emergencies. I need to have money set aside for these expenses.Education is expensive. I can’t depend on my parents to pay all my bills. I have tuition, room and board, books, and incidental expenses to pay for. I’ll try to get a scholarship to cover some of these costs, but I know I will be responsible for a lot of the expenses. If I spend my money now, I won’t be able to pay for my education. I need to save money for my education.Travel is also very expensive. I don’t mean vacation travel. I mean travel to get to and from school. Transpacific airfare costs a lot even special reduced fares. I first have to get to school and then, of course, I want to return to my family for important festivals and occasions. Going back and forth will be costly, but worth it. I need to save money for these trips.Emergencies could arrive at any moment. I might have an unexpected illness while I am at school. There might be costs that won’t covered by the school insurance. One of my family members may need help, I will have to send them money. You can’t predict emergencies like this, but you can be prepared. I need to save money for these emergencies. When you are not rich, you cannot spend your money carelessly. You must plan ahead. I know in my life, I will have expenses for my schooling and for travelling to and from my home. I know that I will also have unexpected expenses related to unforseen emergencies. I must be prepared. I need to save money for these events.34. You have received a gift of money. The money is enough to buy either a piece of jewelry you like or tickets to a concert you want to attend. Which would you buy? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer. The choice between spending money on tickets to a concert or spending money on jewelry is an easy one. Given this choice, I would buy jewelry. The reasons are obvious, jewelry is an investment; it is permanent; and it is fashionable.Jewelry like a gold bracelet for example is a very good investment. It is important for women( and for man, too) to have gold jewelry. If you have some serious financial problem, you could always sell your jewelry to help you over any rough spots. You could not sell your used concert ticket.Jewelry, unless you sell it, is permanent. You always have it ware. Each time you put it on , you will remember the day you bought it. It will give you pleasure for years and years. You could not wear the ticket stub from the concert.Jewelry is very fashionable. I would feel very smart wearing a beautiful gold bracelet or diamond pin. People would comment and tell me how much they loved my jewelry. They would compliment me on my good taste.I would feel very rich with my jewelry. I would have a good investment which is permanent and fashionable. Then, when someone invites me to a concert( and pays for my ticket), I will have something beautiful to wear.35. You must select a person to teach others to do a job. Which one of the following is the most important for you to consider in making you selection?●The person’s education●The person’s work experience●The quality of the person’s previous workUse specific reasons and examples to support your answer.Training someone to do a job is an important task. It requires a good education, work experience, and skilled job performance. Of these three requirements, I believe it is most important that a potential job trainer be judged on the quality of his or her previous work.A person may be well educated, but not able to perform a job proficiently. A doctor may know how to treat childhood diseases, but not be able to train medical students to perform surgery. An accountant may be able t o balance a company’s accounts, but not be able to help the company’s executives invest their money.A person may have a lot of work experience, but not be able to do the job well. Time is not the best measure of quality. A mother may spend 17-years raising her children, but not be able to train young mothers to care for their infants. A typist may have typed ten-years worth of letters, but may not type over 30 words a minute.A person who does a job well is the one you want to be a trainer. I want to learn to fly a plane from a pilot who has faced a lot of mechanical problems in flight and never had an accident. I want to learn how to make money from a billionaire not form a salaried investment broker. As in all things, it is quality that we look for, not general knowledge or time spent in an occupation. I want others to learn from the best, so they can be the best, too.36. Business should hire employees for their entire lives. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. In some business cultures, it is the practice to hire workers when they are young and employ them until they retire. In other business cultures companies hire people to do a job and then fire them when they are not needed. To me, the important consid erations in today’s economy is job performance: speed and change. Loyalty is not a consideration.Today there is a lot of competition and we need to hire workers who can perform a task well. We need to find skilled workers who can do a job without a lot of training. We need to match the job to the worker, and, if the job changes, we change the worker.Because of this increased competition, we need to be able to produce our goods or services quickly. We need young people who are willing to put in long hours. We need young people who are aggressive and will push themselves to do their job faster. In order to compete, we have to be innovative. By changing our workforce frequently, we can bring in new ideas. We must constantly be looking for new ways to do new things. We need fresh workers with fresh points of view.Although a company’s loyalty to a worker and a workers loyalty to a company is a noble idea, it is not practical today. Skilled workers do not want to be tied down to one company; they want the flexibility to improve their opportunities. Change makes the economy powerfu.37. Countries, businesses, and schools are three areas that need good leaders. Choose one of these three areas and describe the most important qualities of a leader in that area. Explain why these qualities are important, using specific examples and details. The principal of a school is one of our first encounters with a figure of authority. Consequently, he or she must be a good example of a leader. The principal must be firm, fair and foresighted which are important qualities of a principal. When a principal announces a rule, you must understand that he or she means it. If a rule requires all students to be in their seats when the bell rings, the rule must be enforced. If students are out of their seats, they should be punished. If a rule requires that students not wear bats in school, the rule must be enforced. If students wear bats, the bats must be taken away from them. A principal must be firm. When a principal enforces a rule, you must understand that he or she will treat everyone equally. If I get caught eating at my desk, I must receive the same punishment that my classmate got when she got caught eating at her desk. If a sophomore is late for school, he or she must receive the same punishment that a senior would. A principal must be fair. When a principal establishes a rule, you must understand that he or she has a good reason for it. If a rule requires that students must participate in extracurricular sports, you should understand that the principal knows that a strong body as well as a strong mind will help us in the future. If a rule requires that students must do two hours of volunteer work in the community each week, you should understand that the principal knows that close involvement in the community builds strong character. A principal must be foresighted.A principal’s job is not as easy one. I only hope that in the future, I can model my own leadership abilities on the ones I observed in school. I hope I can be as firm, fair, and foresighted as my principal.38 Choose one of the following transportation vehicles and explain why you think it has changed people’s lives.●Automobiles●Bicycles●AirplanesUse specific reasons and examples to support your answer. An airplane is a form of transportation that has changed people’s lives. Thanks to the plane, our lives are now faster, more exciting, and more convenient that before. You cannot deny that a plane is fast. For example, the Concorde flies at supersonic speed. A businessman can leave Paris at 11 a.m. in the morning and arrive in New York at 8 a.m. the same morning in time for a day’s work. Many business people in Europe will fly to London for a noon morning in time for a day’s work. Many business people in Europe will f ly to London for a noon meeting and then return home to Rome or Madrid for dinner. It is always exciting to take a plane trip. When you take a trip by plane, you know that you might cross many time zones, many oceans, and many countries. When you get off the plane, you could be in a place that speaks a different language. A plane is like a magician’s trick. You get in a box and you come out somewhere totally different.Nothing can beat the convenience of a plane. In the old days, it might take you days to do what the plane can do it an hour. Boats, for example, only leave on certain days of the week and take a long time to get to their destination. Planes give you the option to leave several times a day and get you to your destination quickly.Although other forms of transportation may be more comfortable, none has changed the way we do business and live our lives more than the plane. Thanks to the speed, excitement, and convenience of the planes, our lives are richer.39. Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.Who would disagree with the statement “ progress is good”? Without progress , there would be no change. Without progress, there would be no change in our economy, our standard of living, or our health.Progress is required to keep the economy moving forward. New products need to be developed; new services need to be created. Without progress, our economy would stand still. There would be no change. Without progress, there would be no supermarkets with fress produce brought in from all over the world.Progress is required to improve our standard of living. Our homes today are more efficient and use less natural resources thanks to improvement in home construction techniques. Our clothes are warmer and safer thanks to developments in textile manufacturing. Our educational system is better thanks to the use of the computers and the Internet.Progress is required to improve the heath of the world population. Without progress, there would be no vaccines against deadly diseases like smallpox. Without progress, there would be increased infant mortality. Thanks to progress, our lives are longer and healthier.Progress is a natural state. Without it, we would not evolve. Without it, our economy, our standard of living, and our health would deteriorate. Who could deny the necessity of progress.40 Learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.People often say “ Those who don’t understand history will repeat the mistakes of the past.” Itotally disagree. I don’t see any evidence that people have made smart decisions based on their knowledge of the past. To me, the present is what is important, not the past. I think that people, the weather, and politics determine what happens, not the past.People can change. We can’t assume that people will continue to hate one another just because they have had hated one another for years. Look at Turkey and Greece. When Turkey had an earthquake, Greece sent aid. When Greece had an earthquake, Turkey sent aid. Now, these two countries are cooperating and looking forward to improved relations. No doubt, if we looked at the past, we could have thought this was a lost cause. But people change. The weather can change. Farmers think that they can plant certain crops because these crops have always grown well in their fields before. But the weather can change. There can be a long drought. The crops that have always worked well , will die. A drought-resistant crop needs to be tried. If we looked at the past, we would not have changed our crop and we would have lost our farm. Weather changes.Politics an change. According to my way of thinking, politicians must be responsive to changes in the people. If politicians looked only at the past, they would always say the same thing. People change. On the whole, people today care about human rights. They warn all people to have the equal rights. If we looked at the past in the United States, we would see a lot of discrimination against races, women, and sexual orientation. Now, that is changing. Politicians changes, too.As a rule what is important today is to follow the mood of the moment. We can’t be looked in the past. It doesn’t do us any g ood to think about the past. People, the weather, and politics can change in any direction. The direction of this change, in my opinion, can not be predicted by studying the past.。
