A new facial ﹣recognition app could come to the rescue ,but privacy experts recommend proceeding withcaution. The app, called SocialRecall ,connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition ,potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions ."It breaks downthese social barriers we all have when meeting somebody ," says Barry Sandrew, who createdthe app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000 people. After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer ,the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media .At the event ,the app is active withina previously defined geographical area .When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee's face, the app identifies the individual ,displays the person's name, and links to his or her social media profile .To protect privacy ,it recognizes only those who have agreedto participate .And the app's creators say it automatically deletes users' data after an event.Ann Cavoukian , a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app's creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app ,they should know that "there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you . "The start﹣up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia,or "face blindness," a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met .To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone's face, from either the smartphone's camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered informationis displayed .The collected data are stored only on a user's phone ,according to the team behind the app.(1)SocialRecall is used to .A .take photosB.identify peopleC.organize eventsD.make friends(2)Paragraph 3 is mainly about .A .how the app worksB.how the app was createdC.what makes the app popularD.what people can do with the app(3)SocialRecall helps people with prosopagnosia by .A .giving names to the photos kept in their smartphonesB.collecting information previously entered in the phoneC.providing the information of a person when they first meetD.showing the person's information when it spots a stored face(4)What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage ?A .It may put people's privacy at risk .B.It has caused unintended consequences.C.It can prevent some communication disorders .D.It is praised by users for its protective measures .7.(8 分)GOING TO UNIVERSITY is supposed to be a mind ﹣broadening experience. That statement is probably made in comparison to training for work straight after school ,whichmight not be so encouraging .But is it actually true ?Jessika Golle of the University of T übingen,in Germany ,thought she would try to find out .Her result, however,is not quite what might be expected .As she reports in Psychological Science this week ,she found thatthose who have been to university do indeed seem to leave with broader and more inquiringminds than those who have spent their immediate post ﹣school years in vocational (职业的)training for work .However ,it was not the case that university broadened minds .Rather, work seemed to narrow them .Dr.Golle came to this conclusion after she and a team of colleagues studied the early careers of 2,095 German youngsters .The team used two standardized tests to assess theirvolunteers. One was of personality traits ,including openness, conscientiousness(认真)and so on .The other was of attitudes ,such as realistic ,investigative and enterprising. They administered both tests twice ﹣once towards the end of each volunteer'stime at school, and then again six years later.Of the original group,382 were on the intermediate track, from which there was a choice between the academic and vocationalroutes, and it was on these that the researchers focused .University beckoned for 212 ofthem. The remaining 170 chose vocational training and a job .When it came to the second round of tests ,Dr.Golle found that the personalities ofthose who had gone to university had not changed significantly .Those who had undergone vocational training and then got jobs were not that much changed in personality, either﹣except in one crucial respect. They had become more conscientious. That sounds like a good thing ,certainly compared with the common public image of undergraduates as a bunch of lazybones. But changes in attitude that the researchers recorded were rather worrying .In the university group ,again, none were detectable. But those who had chosen the vocational route showed marked drops in interest in tasks that are investigativeand enterprising in nature .And that might restrict their choice of careers .Some investigative and enterprising jobs, such as scientific research, are, indeed beyond the degreeless. But many ,particularly in Germany ,with its tradition of vocational training ,are not.The researchers mention ,for example ,computer programmers and finance﹣sector workers as careers requiring these traits. If Dr.Golle is correct, and changes in attitude brought about by the very training Germany prides itself on are narrowingpeople's choices, that is indeed a matter worthy of serious consideration .(1)Which of the following can best replace "beckoned for" in Paragraph 2 ?A .Examined.B.Attracted .C.Organized.D.Recognized.(2)What can we learn from the research ?A .The degreeless have not changed in personalities.B.Going to university is a mind ﹣broadening experience.C.Working straight after school narrows people's minds .D.College students pride themselves on their education .(3)According to the last two paragraphs ,.A .college students enjoy a very good public imageB.the undergraduates have changed significantly in attitudeC.the degreeless are much better at dealing with challenging tasksD.people show less interest in investigative jobs due to vocational training(4)What is the author's attitude towards the finding ?A .Concerned.B.Optimistic .C.Unclear.D.Sceptical.8.(8 分)Smile! A review of this emotional mirroring appears on February 11 in Trends inCognitive Sciences. In their paper,Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood, social psychologists at the University of Wisconsin ,describe how people in social situations copy others' facialexpressions to create emotional responses in themselves. For example,if you're with a friendwho looks sad,you might "try on" that sad face yourself without realizing you're doingso. In "trying on" your friend's expression ,it helps you to recognize what they're feeling byassociating it with times in the past when you made that expression.Humans get thisemotional meaning from facial expressions in a matter of only a few hundred milliseconds ."You reflect on your emotional feelings and then you generate some sort of recognition judgment, and the most important thing that results in is that you take the appropriate action﹣you approach the person or you avoid the person," Niedenthal says."Your own emotionalreaction to the face changes your perception of how you see the face in such a way thatprovides you with more information about what it means ."A person's ability to recognize and "share" others' emotions can be prevented when theycan't mimic faces .This is a common complaint for people with motor diseases ,like facialparalysis (瘫痪)from a stroke ,or even due to nerve damage from plastic surgery.Niedenthal notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer fromparalysis from birth ,because if you've never had the ability to mimic facial expressions ,youwill have developed compensatory ways of interpreting emotions .People with social disorders associated with mimicry or emotion ﹣recognition damage ,like autism (自闭症),can experience similar challenges ."There are some symptoms inautism where lack of facial mimicry may in part be due to limitation of eye contact,"Niedenthal says.Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facialexpression recognition . A better understanding of that part ,she says, will give us a betteridea of how to treat related disorders .(1)According to the passage, facial mimicry helps .A .experience one's own feelings clearlyB.change others' emotions quicklyC.respond to others' expressions properlyD.develop friendship with others easily(2)We can know from Paragraph 4 and 5 that .A .people with motor diseases may also suffer from autismB.people born with facial paralysis may still recognize emotionsC.people with social disorders can't have eye contact with othersD.people receiving plastic surgery have difficulty in mimicking faces(3)According to Niedenthal ,the next step of the study will focus on .A .how we can treat brain disordersB.what can be done to regain facial mimicryC.how our brain helps us with emotional mirroringD.what part of our brain helps recognize facial expression(4)The passage is written to .A .discuss how people react positively to others' smilesB.draw people's attention to those with social disordersC.introduce a new trend in facial expression recognitionD.explain how emotional mirroring affects people's empathy第二节(共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.9.(10 分)Benefits of SportsDoing sports is a physical ,mental and social adventure. It's a great way for children totake a break from academics and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven to improve overall well ﹣being. The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious .Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports ,you'll notice an increase in your overall fitnessonce you're involved .(1)Basketball players focus on strength training ;football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs .The training processhelps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions .(2)Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self ﹣worth.A pat on the back, high﹣five from a teammate ,or handshakeafter a match really boosts a child's confidence .Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise the self﹣worth.(3)So after a game,it'sa better idea to ask "Did you enjoy the game ?" rather than "Did you win ? Theself-made billionaire said he felt stupid for not knowing any foreign languages.Speaking in his third Ask Me Anything question-and-answer session for online forum Reddit (红迪网), the Microsoft founder said that he wished he spoke French,Arabic or Chinese. He said: "I took Latin and Greek in high school and got A's and I guess it helps my vocabulary. I keep hoping to get time to study one of these—probably French because it is the easiest. I did Duolingo for a while but didn't keep it up."Gates, who is worth $79.3 billion, praised Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for surprising an audience in Beijing when he spoke fluent Chinese. "Mark Zuckerberg amazingly learned Chinese and did a Q&A with Chinese students—unbelievable, isn't it?" he saidThis isn't the first time for Gates to admit his regret over language. He also showed his habits at home and personal insights.Last February, Gates said he likes to do the dishes himself—to his own special standards every night and also told the interviewer that his wife, Melinda, would likely want Samuel L. Jackson to play her husband in a biopic(传记片).He also admitted that he would pick up a $100 bill if he found it on the street. As he took the top spot on Forbes(福布斯)28th Annual Billionaires list last year for the fourth time, he said he is pretty basic when it comes to spending on clothes and food , but that he enjoys investing in shoes and racquets(球拍)when he plays tennis. When asked a life lesson he had to learn the hard way, the billionaire said staying up too late is a habit he is still trying to break. Simultaneously, important looking envelopes containing cards with the same message were hand-delivered to the offices of all the major news companies. One found its way to the desk of Chris Lin, a business reporter at The Post. The card was beautifully designed—a black background with the words printed out in crisp white letters. There was no explanation on the back, just a website address.Chris went to the website. Its style was identical to the card's and said: "Anytime: Starting Tomorrow."The next day websites and blogs were filled with articles theorising about Anytime. Was it a shopping website like Tao Bao or Amazon? A joke? Something illegal?Anytime's marketing had worked—it was a household name before it'd even made a single sale.A.B.C.D.(1)A.B.C.D.(2)When the opening came, that day at noon, the Anytime website suddenly had a single field that read, "What do you want? " All you had to do was type the words into that box, and then specify how quickly you wanted your item delivered: within one, ten,or twenty-four hours.Bloggers were the first to test the service. And their reviews were glowing. Within weeks, Anytime had become a part of daily life. Nobody used other delivery sites or the post anymore as Anytime was much cheaper and faster.Chris still wondered what exactly Anytime was. He tried to find out who owned the company, but it was registered in a small country that did not require such information to be made public. He did find some interesting facts, though. Anyone who challenged the company, it seemed, met with serious trouble. A government official critical of Anytime for avoiding tax was forced to leave his position after news stories suddenly appeared claiming he was dishonest. The head of another company taking Anytime to court died in a car accident just days before the case was to begin.Chris began making a list of all the people who had something terrible happen to them after opposing or criticising Anytime. By lunch, he had more than one hundred examples. Something was definitely wrong. Chris worked on his list the rest of the day, emailing people who could provide more information and looking through newspaper records. After working through the night, an exhausted Chris finally fell asleep at his desk at 4 a.m..When he woke a few hours later, there was a message flashing on his computer screen: "Stop making trouble." Chris smiled. He had no intention of stopping now that he knew he was on the right track. What was on the front of the card sent to Chris Lin?An invitation to a company opening. The website address of a new company. The words "Anytime: Starting tomorrow" .The words "Anything you want, anytime you need it" .Why did the company choose to send the cards to many news reporters?Because it didn't have enough money for traditional advertising.Because it wanted to attract the reporters as customers. So the reporters would write stories about the new company. So people would find the new company interesting.A.B.C.D.A.B.C.D.(4)Itmay be very dangerous. Its popularity would soon decrease. It was doing business all over the world. It was being widely criticised by journalists. How did Chris feel at the end of the story?Scared that he would get into trouble.Confident that he would find the truth.Nervous about what the company would do.Satisfied that he had discovered the company's secret.8.Inside a secured room in a beautiful castle near Paris, asmall metal cylinder(圆柱体)rests on a shelf beneath a doubleset of bell jars. It has lain there for more than a century, its restonly occasionally disturbed when the room's three key holdersperform a coordinated opening ceremony to let techniciansenter and clean this precious piece of metal.First, the cylinder is rubbed with a piece of soft, alcohol-soaked cloth. Then it is steamed with pure water. Finally, the 1kg cylinder is returned, carefully, to its resting place.Such attention to a lump of metal is unusual, but has a purpose. The castle houses the International Bureau of Weights and Measures and that piece of shining, circular metal is its holiest relic. It is the defining mass(质量)against which all other kilograms are measured. This is the international prototype, of the kilogram. The IPK, in short.Dozens of carefully weighted copies of the original have been made. They are stored around the world and used to standardize individual nations' weights and measures systems. But the days of the IPK, in its current form, are numbered. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures has decided to replace this single physical specimen with a more fundamental measurement—based on electric current—in order to define the mass of an object. The king of kilograms is about to be dethroned."One key reason for doing this work is to provide international security, " says Bureau spokesman Paul Robinson. There would be chaos. The current definition of the kilogram is the weight of that cylinder in Paris, after all."Another major motivation for the replacement of the IPK is the growing need to be able to carry out more and more precise measurements. "Drug companies will soon be wanting to use ingredients that will have to be measured in terms of a few millionths of even billionths of a gram, " says Robinson. "We need to be prepared to weigh substances with that kind of accuracy."What do we know about the IPK from the first two paragraphs? It's cared for with great devotion. It's used in religious ceremonies. It's beautifully designed and decorated. It's the most valuable metal in the world.Which of the following best explains "dethroned" underlined in paragraph 5?What is a reason for replacing the current IPK?To protect the metal cylinder from damage. To make taking measurements more economical. To provide all countries with the same standard. To satisfy the increasing demand for exactness. What can be a suitable title for the text?四、七选五(共5题,每题2分,共10分)9.Chuck was in my high-school English class. 1 So, when he told me he hadbeen accepted into the journalism program at the University of Missouri, I wasn't surprised.During the first year at college, Chuck stopped by school a few times.
