WE AND OUR YELLOW RIVER: THRIVING TOGETHERGood afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. The issue of the Yellow River has become the biggest concern of members of the Chinese peoples Political Consultative Conference. My childhood, in fact, is closely associated with the river. My father is an engineering geologist, and he used to take me with him on his trips to the hydropower stations on the river. I enjoyed those trips, especially the trip to Longyang Xia reservoir. Although ten years have passed since my visit, Ican still recall the scenery; I can still recall the water I saw at the reservoir. It was pure, clean and blue, not like the water I saw in the middle reaches of the river, which had turned brown and muddy after passing through the Loess Plateau.Once during our stay at the power station, we were caught in a thunderstorm. And when rain stopped, I could see trickles of water rolling down mountain slopes and flowing into the reservoir. It carried little mud or sand, because at that time, trees and grass still grew around the reservoir. And they protected the soil. At Longyang Xia I was struck by the beauty of nature, and as a child I wanted to stay there and to grow up with our Yellow River.Li Bai, the Tang Dynasty poet, said praises to the flowing water in the Yellow River. He saw it as coming down from heaven and nurturing the people along her way to the sea. However, in 1997,for 330days, not a single drop of water from the Yellow River went into the sea. And droughts are not the only punishment by nature. A friend of my father’s, a university professor, is doing research on the Yellow River. According to this professor, the Yellow River will soon change its course if we allow this situation to continue. Because there is no longer enough water to carry away the silt and mudin the lower reaches of the river and the riverbed rises higher and higher each year.We have taken too much from nature, but given back too little in return. And this is the cost of the unbalanced growth. If we had taken care of the vegetation in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River, we would still experience the river as Li Bai described it.While the developed countries are consuming proportionally more natural resources than the rest of the world, they’ve also taken some good measures in protecting nature. And as a developing country, China can learn from them in this aspect.Last year, when I was visiting Australia with a group of Chinese students who had won prizes in an English Skills Test, our Australian hosts invited us to join them for a horse-ride in the mountains. After two hours on horseback, we reached a valley, where there was a most beautiful meadow, with flowers in all colors dotted on a huge blanket of green. When I began to praise the beauty of nature, my friends told me that in this valley, there used to be a big mine and the wastewater from the mine turned everything brown. When the mine was abandoned, people made great efforts to restore the greenvegetation. They also used the latest biological technology choosing the best grass seeds suitable for the local soil. So the beautiful meadow is a result of commitment, hard work, and new technology. What happened to this valley in Australia should also happen to our Yellow River and, in fact, it is happening. I have seen farmers planting trees on mountains along the Yellow River. I have seen them climb the mountain tops with seedlings on their shoulders because they had no machinery. I have seen them pour on trees the water they had carried up in buckets from miles down the valley. These farmers are quietly nourishing our Yellow River, just as the river has nourished them. And these farmers, men and women I don’t know, gave me the confidence that we and our Yellow River will grow together, and someday in the future, we will be able to drink the clean water from our Yellow River again, because she is our dearest mother.Thank you.。

Honorable judges and dear fellow students,Just as most people here, when I first saw the topic reform and opening-up policies,a voice came out, saying what a grand scale! Then those big events, such as China's accession to WTO,the launch of Shenzhou and the submersion of Jiaolong flashed through my mind. However,at this moment I stand on the stage as a member of Chinese youth,I'm not gonna draw a magnificent blueprint for you. What I exactly want is to find out the relation between Chinese youth and this era of reform and opening-up.It is known to all that in the past 40 years,China has captured the opportunity provided by globalization and grown rapidly from nobody to the second-largest economy in the world. In this context,it could be said that we young people have had better resources than ever before. To be more specific, let's pick up some daily life's fragments: for example, one Sunday morning, you don't feel like going outside,so you pull out your smartphone and quickly order a takeout on APP to fort your empty stomach. In another case ,there's been a discount on Taobao .After struggling with your equipment and the net speed, you finally got yourfavorite goods at the best prize, because the most plete supply chain and logistic chain worldwide will solve the remaining work for you,so all you have to do is waiting. Not to mention the increasing number of people going abroad, with a Chinese passport, they are entitled to travel around the world and e back home safely. But now I wonder how many of you have realized that this convenience, this sense of security does't e out of air, surely we could regard it as the product of reform and opening-uppolicies,nevertheless,do you really understand what are behind those achievements? There is a saying, if you live at ease , that is because there are a great many people who are working for you in silence. They might be the politicians and entrepreneurs who climb into the raging flow to explore and promote the system construction of market economy, they might be the intellectuals who devote their lives to prompting the engine of development, and they might be every single person we have access to.In other words,we youth do not take it for granted, the more resources we possess means the more responsibility we will shoulder. When the 95s were claimed to be the new youth in China and the first millennial stepped into campus, baton of the era has also been approaching.Although China is moving firmly towards its goal of rejuvenation ,deficiencies and problems still exist. So in this sense,we youth ought to grow stronger to sustain the potentiality of development. With the baton in hands,do not afraid toembrace the mercurial society ,do not afraid to change the future. So that as the new youth we could feel more emboldened to say that facing the reform and opening-up policies we are not only the gainers but also the successors!Thank you! Reform and Opening-up : Dare to embrace the worldGood afternoon everyone, my name is Jack. It’s my great privilege to stand here and share my own perspective about 40 ye ars’ reform and opening-up.Through the long history of China, reform is easy to witness. Some reforms just shifted the rulers’ name yet had little influence on the society. Others, however, can be revolutionary and our reform and opening-up policy is one of them.Born in 21st century, it is hard to have the exact feeling about the life before 1978.Luckily, I can grasp some information from my parents and my grandparents. On a personal note, the most impressive change that has occurred during th e 40 years is people’s concept of living, or to be specific, the concept of allocating their salary. For instance, Elder people like my grandparents always cut off their monthly budget and then save the surplus money into the bank account. While young adults are more likely to use the remaining salary to do some investment or with the loan ifnecessary. I did ask my grandparents why not follow suit, they told me it had risks that they didn’t want to take. Apparently, we stand in this period and all know that such kind of trade and investment is helpful to the economy ascent. Thanks to Mr. Deng’s policy, we can now dare to trade both domestically and internationally.Beside economy, swift development in other aspects is also prodigious. As you can see, Skyscrapers stand in the city and huts are no more. Cars take the main avenue and bikes step aside. Various travel modes are available for mon civilians. Imagine, what kind of condition we may live in if the reform and opening-up policy is absent? Do you want to live in the condition that was similar to forty years ago. Ok, back to the point, when mentioning transportation, you all know what I am going to talk about is our high speed-rail whose both speed and technology top all over the world. Dating back to 40 years ago, it is nearly impossible for people to imagine such changes can literally take place. Due to the reform and opening-up, I can now jump out of the well and embrace the world. Flash as 40 years may be, we indeed witness and experience the happiness that the reform and opening-up has brought us.Therefore, as a freshman, it is my duty and also our duty to be explicit about our directions and master adequate professional knowledge which will be the basis of our contributions to the munity and creating harmonious environment for the next generation. Do not be afraid thatyour contribution may not be considered as innovative as Deng Xiao Pin did, because it is the little parts that you have done that build up the world we live in today. In the end, I have to say that reform and opening-up is a great fortune for every Chinese. Owing to the window it opens for us, I can now embrace the world. That’s all. Thank you.

Ladies and Gentlemen:How well are we in tune with the rhythm of life? In our busy day to day existence, we don’t often stop to ask ourselves this question. At least I don’t. And it wasn’t until I joined a competitive sporting event that I learned a most important lesson – we must place our mind in harmony with the natural order of things to be successful.Let me tell you what happened.I decided to take part in an International Marathon in my hometown last year. Being an ambitious person, I hoped to finish it within 5 hours, accompanied by my friend with whom I had trained. The big day finally arrived. “Ready...set...bang” And we were off.At first, we kept a rapid pace and ran nonstop. At this pace, we finished the first 20 kilometers in 2 hours and I thought running a marathon was a piece of cake. Then my running mate began to slow down. I urged him to keep running at the same pace but he said no, he wanted to conserve his energy. I felt I hadpartnered with the wrong person, therefore, I sprinted on and left him behind in the dust.A few kilometers later, I began to understand his strategy as my pace slowed to a jog then a walk. After that I was incapable of moving another step. I was humiliated as more and more people ran passed me. More than once I thought “Maybe I should quit.”I started to doubt my ability to finish this race.At this moment, my running mate caught up with me and slapped me on the back. “Follow me,” he shouted. He had balanced his marathon pace and was encouraged me to do the same. For the rest of this grueling contest, we walked, jogged, ran a few miles, and walked again. Slowly, painfully but hopefully this time, we established the most suitable pace within the natural flow of our physical capabilities.Eventually we accomplished our first Marathon of 42 kilometers in 4 and half hours. I asked myself, what did this marathon mean to me? My Marathon experience became an influential metaphor for my life about how we must learn to pace ourselves in everything, by being in tune with the rhythm of life.Like the tide that ebbs and flows, we must listen to advice but make our own decisions. Like the show at dawn and dusk, wemust learn to balance pride and modesty. And from the way the wind can both shout and whisper, we must learn when to be strong and when to be gentle, for everything moves in its own rhythm and its own yin and yang elements. It is the interaction of these complementary extremes that produces harmony, as Laozi said, extremes meet. Since the marathon, this notion of two opposite forces working together has been my running partner, so to speak. Yin and yang exist everywhere, constantly interacting, and never existing in an absolute condition.Ladies and Gentlemen, life is like running a marathon, let us discover, define and develop a natural rhythm of life, in order to achieve both harmony and success.Thank you for listening.---来源网络整理,仅供参考。

1ChangeLeo Tolstoy once said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself. He is right. We always have great plans and dreams in our minds…too ready to achieve something grand that changes the world or benefits all of mankind .For example; we hate pollution and have made up our minds to find new energy sources that keep the environment clean. Yet we still litter on the ground. We complain about traffic jams, so we plan to build more highways to solve the problem, but it never occurs to us that our failure to follow traffic regulations is the leading cause of this situation. We are so concerned that the violence in the media has a bad impact on our children, we urge the government to set laws to protect them. But, do we, as adults, set a good example for our kids? We use nasty words and even spit on the ground in front of them, I dare to say, we harm more!In my opinion, before we decide to change the world, we had betterchange ourselves first. As ordinary individuals, we do not have the power to change the world. But we can change our habit of littering, spitting, cussing, we can respect the environment around us, we must act as good models for our kids.If each of us does all of these little things, all of us, millions and millions of individuals together, together we will be strong …strong enough to change our world! So please, the next time you do something, think how your actions influence not only you, but those around you too, especially our children …and perhaps more importantly…our planet!

From made in China to created in ChinaOne in four computers in the world comes from China; but from each computer produced, China earns only what 10 apples are worth. I read this in People’ Daily not long ago. While the force of globalization has spread Chinese-made products all over the world and earned China the name “world’s factory”, China earns very little profits from this kind of low-cost production. It’s even been said that China has to export 800 million shirts to get an airplane. The problem is, China has involved in countless processes of production, but doesn’t necessarily have the intellectual property rights. If all we can be is part of the low-cost, labor-oriented production process, we’ll remain in a passive, disadvantaged position and gradually lose our competitive edge in the global arena. To develop China’s creative industry, transforming products from "made in China" to "created in China" has become one of China’s major tasks. This transformation will be no less like a marathon, requiring much effort especially that from Chinese enterprises, the major force in Chinese economy. Though there’ s no one in front leading us which direction to run, there’s much to learn from some Chinese enterprises that have already found the right strategies and are shining on the global stage. These strategies involve brand identity establishment, technological innovation and modern management system.Firstly, the brand that I mentioned above is an intangible yet most valuable asset to a company. It gains credibility from consumers, thus constituting the reason for consumers to buy habitually. Tong Ren Tang, the largest producer of traditional Chinese medicine, remains one of the oldest surviving brand names. The credibility that it gained through quality products has made its name known worldwide and maintains its recognized brand. The second strategy is innovation of technology, which helps enterprises gain its core competency. In the global era where technology emerges at a rapid speed, one has to adopt the latest technology, and also to compete for the speed of developing new ones. The success of Haier, the third largest household appliances manufacturer in the world, lies in its constant innovation. Over the past 16 years, Haier has invested a total of 7 billion RMB in technological development, using 6 percent of its income for scientific research and the development of new products. At present, Haier's development operational speed is turning out 1.3 new products a day, maintaining its upper-hand in thefierce competition. The third strategy is the establishment of modern management system. New Hope Group, the National Leading Enterprise for Agriculture, started from family-owned business. When the business was soaring and situation was changing, the family members had divergent views of management. To make sure of the development of their business, they decided to turn their company into a limited liability one, distributing property rights efficiently. Because of this, the company increased its competitiveness rapidly. Establishing a modern management system will lead to efficient levels of division of labor and efficient patterns in the business cycle. With brand identity, technology and fl exibility, China’s creative industries will blossom and give China the cutting edge in the fierce global competition. One day, China will stand firm and proud, with national brands thriving on the global markets, and with millions of products tagged “created in China”, instead of “made in China”.

From Walls to BridgesI'm studying in a city famous for its walls. All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines. With old, cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beaten guards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city. Our ancestors liked to build walls. They built walls in Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes through half of our country. They built walls to ward off enemies and evil spirits. This tradition has been maintained to this day as we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public. I grew up at the foot of the city walls, and I've loved them since my childhood. For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world. My perception, however, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a scenic area of my city. My classmates and I were walking with some international students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees, which formed a huge canopy above our heads. Suddenly an international student asked me, "Where is the entrance to the Eastern Suburbs?""We're already in the Eastern Suburbs," I replied. He seemed taken aback, "I thought you Chinese have walls for everything." His remark set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails," while I insisted that the Eastern Suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls. That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student. For instance, he told me that universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls; the campuses were just part of the cities. I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede China's development.Let me give you an example.A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying, "You can't borrow this book, you are not a student here." In the end, I had to spend 200 Yuan buying a copy; meanwhile, the copy in law school was gathering dust on the shelf. At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university has started not only to unify its libraries but also link them up with libraries of other universities, so myexperience will not be repeated. Barriers will be replaced by bridges. Through an inter-library loan system, we will have access to books from any library. With globalization, with China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.I know globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China's tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their roles in the modern world. And how about the ancient walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite. My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. These walls attract not only historians and archeologists but also many schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage. Walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great change in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization.。

And do you ask for the receipt after buying it? Nowadays, all trains in China provide its passengers with receipts for commodities, but 7 years ago, things were quite different. On 13th of October, 201X, the train T109 from Beijing to Shanghai was speeding on the railway. A graduate student bought a sausage at 1 yuan on the train, then asked for a receipt.“Are you kidding? It?s just one yuan!” The crew member was surprised. The student, however, answered in a determined voice, “I paid the money, so I deserve t he receipt.”“But we never give receipts on the train.? As a result, his further request was turned down by a cold shoulder.Several days later, the student sued the National Railway Ministry, for not providing receipts for passengers. To his dismay, the court turned down the case for lack of evidence. But he, who majored in law at that time, believed law as a most powerful weapon, so he did not give up. Instead, he began his journey of collecting first-hand evidence by taking trains and buying commodities aboard. When his classmates were playing soccer, he was taking the train; When his classmates were buying food at Mcdonald?s, he was buying food on the train; When his classmates were askinggirls out, he was asking for the receipts. As he joked, ?I was either taking the train or on the way to take the train.?One month later, he appeared in the court again, with newly-collected evidence and a stronger confidence. And I guess, ladies and gentlemen, you will all cheer for the result because this time, the student won the case. Very soon, a regulation about receipts on the train came out. And whatever we buy on the train now, there?s a receipt for us.Outside the court, the student was asked, “How do you make it to the end?” He said, “As a law student, I roo t my faith in law. I believe that law is there, to protect every person with no exception, and to ensure every person has a say.”His words spread a strong faith in law, which is not only a doctrineof a law student, but also a belief that all citizens ought to hold.It is this faith that initiates the student to resort to law for atiny issue; it is this faith that supports him to endure all the exhausting trips when collecting evidence; It is this faith that makes a seemingly “ridiculous” receipt request legal and rightful. It is this faith that helps to change our life, enhance our judicial system and bring social justice. To many, a receipt of 1 yuan is too small to mention, however rights are to be respected and law is to be believed in. It all starts witha tiny receipt of 1 yuan, but we get a monumental case, a new regulation and a bumper harvest in social justice. The bridge that leads a tiny start to a bumper harvest is faith, the faith in law, rightful and strong.篇二:21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛冠军演讲稿21世纪杯全国英语演讲比赛冠军演讲稿Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing todayis more than a mere competition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such ahistoric moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.Though it is only within my power to tell about my personal experience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it stillrepresents, I believe, the root of a spirit which has been essentialto me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years. In my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons. The teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that sheexpected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself. One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "Couldyou please explain this to me? I want very much to do better this time. " I started explaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, I ran off quickly. Natsurprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam. And two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her deathof blood cancer. No one ever knew about the little task I failed to fulfill, but I couldn't forgive myself. I simply couldn't forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "Why didn't you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? Why didn't you understand alittle better the trust placed in you, so that I would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"I was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for I began to understand theword "responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never again did I feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that I have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best I can.As I grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. New buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.。

英语演讲比赛演讲稿(8篇)this is no surprise though if you look at the insights of contemporary psychology. it turns out that we cant even be in a group of people without instinctively mirroring, mimicking their opinions. even about seemingly personal and visceral things like who youre attracted to, you will start aping the beliefs of the people around you without even realizing that thats what youre doing. and groups famously follow the opinions of the most dominant or charismatic person in the room, even though theres zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas -- i mean zero. so ... (laughter) you might be following the person with the best ideas, but you might not. and do you really want to leave it up to chance? much better for everybody to go off by themselves, generate their own ideas freed from the distortions of group dynamics, and then come together as a team to talk them throughin a well-managed environment and take it from there.now if all this is true, then why are we getting it so wrong? why are we setting up our schools this way and our workplaces? and why are we making these introverts feel so guilty about wanting tojust go off by themselves some of the time? one answer lies deep in our cultural history. western societies, and in particular the u.s., have always favored the man of action over the man of contemplation and “man“ of contemplation. but in americas early days, we lived in what historians call a culture of character, where we still, at that point, valued people for their inner selves and their moral rectitude. and if you look at the self-help books from this era, they all had titles with things like “character, the grandest thing in the world.“ and they featured role models like abraham lincoln who was praised for being modest and unassuming. ralph waldo emerson called him “a man who does not offend by superiority.“but then we hit the 20th century and we entered a new culture that historians call the culture of personality. what happened is we had evolved an agricultural economy to a world of big business. and so suddenly people are moving from small towns to the cities. and instead of working alongside people theyve known all their lives, now they are having to prove themselves in a crowd of strangers. so, quite understandably, qualities like magnetism and charisma suddenly come to seem really important. and sure enough, theself-help books change to meet these new needs and they start to have names like “how to win friends and influence people.“ and they feature as their role models really great salesmen. so thats the world were living in today. thats our cultural inheritance. 英语演讲竞赛经典优秀演讲稿篇五英语演讲竞赛即兴演讲篇六英语演讲大赛英文篇七good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! The poet said: spring flowers to the door pushed open.I said:Thanksgiving to the door pushed open the living. If you carefully listen to the voices of flowers, are everywhere harmonious life movement. Then, as a middle school student, how Thanksgiving?First Thanksgiving their parents, because everyone%26#39;s life is a continuation of the parents of one blood, all of the parents gave us love, let us enjoy the human world of affection and happiness, therefore, we would like to thank the parents. Teachers are our growth, are our friends, teachers care for us , their words and deeds, let us benefit for life, we pay for teachers efforts and sweat, we should Thanksgiving teachers. Students study the lives of our fellow students to encourageeach other, help each other, to jointly overcome difficulties and setbacks, the common taste of success and happiness learning, we should be grateful for every day and we accompanied the students. Thanksgiving-Fighting, Thanksgiving unlimited! Students, and Society Thanksgiving! Let us always to the life caring and full of love and love!英语演讲大赛英文篇八hello everyone!I have a dream that one day every vally shall be ealted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. Wow, what a dream it has been for Martin Luther King. But the changing world seems telling me that people gradually get their dreams lost somehow in the process of growing up, and sometimes I personally find myself saying goodbye unconsciously to those distant childhood dreams. However,we meed dreams. They nourish our spirit; they represent possibility even when we are dragged down by reality. They keep us going. Most successful people are dreamers as well asordinary people who are not afraid to think big and dare to be great. When we were little kids, we all dreamed of doing something big and splashy, something significant. Now what we need to do is to maintain them, refresh them and turn them into reality. However, the toughest part is that we often have no ideas how to translate these dreams into actions. Well, just start with concrete objectives and stick to it. Don’t let the nameless fear confuse the eye and confound our strong belief of f→.←uture. Through our talents, through our wits, through our endurance and through our creativity, we will make it.Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams, for when dreams go,life is a barren field frozen with snow. So my dear friends, think of your old and maybe dead dreams. Whatever it is, pick it up and make it alive from today.Thank you!。

To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.

The Doors that Are Open to UsGood morning ladies and gentlemen: The title of my speech today is "The Doors that Are Open to Us ". The other day my aunt paid me a visit. She was overjoyed. "I got the highest mark in the mid-term examination!" she said. Don't be surprised! My aunt is indeed a student; to be exact, a college student at the age of 45. Last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "This was the wisest decision I have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. To her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young. "Compared with the late 70s," she says, "now college students have many doors." My aunt cannot help but recall her first college experience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the Cultural Revolution. She was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study Chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a TV factory. I was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job. Look at us today! So many doors are open to us! I believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. And my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities. The first door I see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us. My aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient Chinese poetry and onShakespearean drama. As for myself, I am an English major, but I may also go to lectures on history. To me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-rounded development of each individual. So all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us. The second door is the door to the outside world. Learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries. My aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation "frogs in a well." But today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other. I have many fellow international classmates, and I am applying to an exchange program with a university abroad. As for my aunt, she is planning to get an MBA degree in the United Kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master's degree in biochemistry. We are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we'll put to use what we have learnt abroad. The third door is the door to lifelong learning. As new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age. Naturally, my aunt herself is the best example. Many of my aunt's contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. She simply responds, "Age doesn't matter. What matters is your attitude. You may think it's strange that I am still going to college, but I don't think I'm too old to learn." Yes, she is right. Since the government removed the age limit for college admissions in 2001, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same classrooms. Like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit. With her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity. The doors open to us also pose challenges. For instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, thechallenge of preserving our fine tradition while learning from the West, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. So, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, I believe I can meet the challenge head on. When I reach my aunt's age, I can be proud to say that I have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more. Possibly I will go back to college, too. Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

What would you do if you had only one day left to live?“What would you do if you had only one day left to live?”I asked this question to my young students when teaching English this winter. What were their answers?“I would watch television!” the first answer. “I would play with the computer!”the second one. “I would play with computer TOO.” The girl finished her sentence perfectly with a serious smile. Indeed how cute and innocent that smile was, but how seriously my heart was hurt. I was too frightened to listen to more answers like that.Ten years ago, at their age, I had a different answer: I would spend the last day of my life gazing at the face of my dear grandmother until I inscribed every detail of it onto my mind. When grandmother was getting old and weak, my family bought her a telephone so I could save time and the trouble of traveling to her home by making phone calls instead. Later we bought her a television so she could watch modern dramas by herself. Then grandma must have been, we assumed, very contented and happy. But I never really knew how grandma felt. She silently passed away without a word one night. When I heard about her death, a chilling pain pierced my empty heart. The pain grew even sharper as I tried to remember in detail exactly how grandma looked and I failed completely! How could I remember? I had not visited her for ages—it seemed like a century! My memories of her dissolved into thin air and leaked away like water.Even though I have a telephone, can she hear me now?Even though I might be on television, can she see me now?Even though I have modern telecommunications, can she still communicate with me now? With all these “tele”s, I was powerless.Don’t people just love the word of “tele”, which means far away. Indeed this is how modern technology has changed our world. But please don’t forget this other word with “tele”: telepathy: which refers to human beings’ inborn ability to connect to our loved ones. Our minds are supposed to read each other’s minds; our hearts are supposed to feel each other’s hearts — and fulfill these without anyforms of tool! But the moment I desperately struggled to remember grandmother’s face, the telepathy between her and me had shut down forever. With the help of modern technology, I killed our telepathy. This shall never happen again! The “tele”s are great inventions. But “telepathy”gives them the warmth of a human face. Let’s harness the power of television to excite our kids to develop their telepathy with nature… so that they can read the secret language of flowers. Let’s make the telephone lines provoke us to preserve our telepathy with each other, so we can connect in a warm and feeling way. Let technology keep our “telepathy” ALIVE! We need to wake up and make this happen.I told my grandma’s story to those young kids that day. They got very quiet. They asked me for a second chance to answer the question. They had come to a new understanding – that very moment they had made to me and to our future together, a dear promise.Thank you very much!。

When I was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. And when eventually I got into the university, my dream was to graduate. How pathetic! When we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic. Why? Why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be "fulfilled"? Why do we have to surrender to the so-called "reality"? What IS the reality actually?Ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real. It is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies. More than seven hundred years later, with the prevalence of globalization, our people, our food, our products and many other items, have traveled to many other places beyond Italy. No matter where these Chinese people, Chinese food, Chinese products and many other Chinese items are, they carry with them qualities that are unique to our very own Chinese culture - our traditional values. In the whole process of globalization that the world is integrating politically, economically and culturally, into one, we do witness in our country a great influx of western culture and values - McDonald's, KFCs, soccer players and NBA players. And we are even having this prestigious national speaking competitionin a language that does not belong to us. In the midst of western products pouring in China as a result of globalization, sometimes we do wonder, where does our own culture belong? When we see our younger generations going away from traditional values such as contextual and role-based ethics, ideal of community, hierarchy, paternalism and non-litigious nature of society, we may even think our traditional values are challenged and even threatened. But, are we really losing our values?Ladies and gentlemen, we must remember, the traffic of globalization is two-way. Yes, films from Hollywood, soccer from the United Kingdom and restaurants from America, do have an impact on our values. But, if we see globalization in China a synonymous term with western economic cultural hegemony, we are underestimating the impact of not only globalization but also our values.Have a look at languages. Yes, it is the desire and dream of every single Chinese to speak fluent English, including every single one of us here. But, have youever wondered how many non-Chinese are learning Chinese? Let me tell you, by the end of XX, nearly 30 million people from 85 countries and regions were learning standard Chinese, Putonghua. And who knows about the number of people learning regional dialects such as Shanghainese and Cantonese. In these two years, I am sure none of us here will be surprised that the number is skyrocketing.Have a look at Feng Shui, within 0.21 seconds Google brings you 1,270,000 websites about Feng Shui, not in Chinese, not from all over the world, but in English, just within the United States. And I guess some of you still remember, when the previous American president, Bill Clinton, first became president. He actually had the furniture of his office rearranged according to feng shui ideas.Have a look at traditional Chinese medicine. Four years ago, in XX, there were already more than 120 000 traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, researchers and related business trading companies in Europe, just Europe. Our holistic approach of takingcare of a person's health has been proven popular in the world. Our values, language, our Feng Shui, our traditional medicine and also Kung Fu that I have not really talked about, are all parts and messengers of our culture and values. What does their success in the west tell us? Their popularity tells us that, alongside cheap consumer products, we are exporting to the west, Chinese beliefs and, values.Ladies and gentlemen, globalization, yes it has its impacts on our values. It is sending our values overseas and bringing in new ones. Let's not see the bringing in of new ones a threat to our own culture. As a matter of fact, the bringing in is a very good opportunity and time to rethink and reflect who we are and what we want to be. It is upon us whetherglobalization has a positive or negative impact on our traditional values. Ladies and gentlemen, I see this positively(本文来自:小草范文网:21世纪英语演讲比赛演讲稿), I know even if our traditional values are changing or to change, the change is for better, not for worse. Thank you very much. The Impact of Globalization on Traditional Chinese ValuesGood morning, ladies and gentlemen:Before western and Chinese civilization came into close contact, Chinese people had always longed for a life depicted in traditional Chinese paintings. Those paintings present a harmonious coexistence of people and other life forms. Regarded as the essence of ancient Chinese philosophies, harmony has been deeply-rooted in the minds of the Chinese people. On the one hand, it has contributed to the unique continuity of Chinese civilization. On the other, Chinese people became too much contented withtheir achievements to desire any further changes. As globalization deepens, it is bound to affect our ideal of harmony.First, globalization urges China to speed up its modernization, which threatens our regard for the harmony between Man and Nature. For instance, many damsand hydropower stations are being built for economic benefits at the expense of the well-preserved natural habitats. However, ecological malpractice of such kind goes against the notion of harmonious coexistence in ancient Chinese philosophies. More than 2,000 years ago, long before the concept of environmental protection came into being, DuJiang Weir, a great irrigation project was built in southwestern China's Sichuan province. It succeeded both in controlling floods and infacilitating the agriculture without posing a threat to the environment. Moreover, globalization has brought with it intense competition. Traditionally, moderation is a golden principle, presiding over inter-personal relations in China. Today, however, motivated to come to the top, some people become so self-centered that they choose to sacrifice love, friendship and even family ties.Last but not least, diverse cultures have met in China as a consequence of globalization. Therefore, a clash of cultures becomes inevitable. Unfortunately, the past decades have witnessed a huge loss of cultural heritage in China. In cities like Beijing and Xi'an, hundreds ofcentury-old Chinese-style houses are being demolished to make room for skyscrapers, shopping malls and eight-lane expressways. From these examples, we see the disharmony brought about by globalization. Yet it is not globalization that is to blame. As long as we approach globalization with harmony in mind, its benefit will outweigh its cost. Take my hometown, Hangzhou, for example, thanks to the strenuous efforts made by the municipal government in achieving eco-development, various water birds have returned to the West Lake, calling it home again after years of migration elsewhere. From the lake bank, we see skateboarders and trick cyclists showing off together with people flying kites and kicking shuttlecocks on the plaza nearby. Although they compose a picture quite distinct from traditional Chinese paintings, this picture conveys a modern sense of harmony in this era of globalization.Ladies and gentlemen, to conclude, I would like to quote from British philosopher Bertrand Russell. In contrasting Chinese and Western civilizations, he observed: "The distinctive merit of westerncivilization is the scientific method; the distinctive merit of the Chinese is a just conception of the ends of life. It is these two that one must hope to see gradually uniting." As we see the tremendous progressChina has been making drawing on experience abroad, we may also expect the Chinese traditional value of harmony to eich the world. I look forward to the time when Russell's prophecy comes true.Thank you very much. From Walls to BridgesI'm studying in a city famous for its walls. All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines. With old, cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beatenguards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city. I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether篇二:21世纪英语演讲比赛袁晓婷演讲稿!!The road not taken in lifeHola todos! Ladies and gentlemen, I am a sophomore majoring in Spanish, but today I’m here standing on the stage of an English Competition. Should I be here? Is this my arena? Two years ago, when I was offered the privileged chance to pick my major, rather than choose the well-trodden path of English I chosethe lonely road Spanish. Lonely you may ask? Despite there being 400 million Spanish speakers in the world, a mere fraction of that number studies it in China. It’s very common that when students don’t know which major to choose in college, they choose English; when they want a better job, they pick up English, and when they want to master a foreign language, more often than not, it is English. Let’s be frank, people learn English for money. There is a perception that English is the path to a better life. But the law of supply and demand tells that if everyone supplies the same service the value of that service declines. So those who have taken a less traveled road, and have not followed the herd, may have the last laugh. We’ve seen this before. Think of all those students who decided to pursue law at the urgings of their parents, uncles or teachers. Where are they now? Promised a world of opportunity upon completing their education, instead they are now struggling to find a position in their overcrowded field. Some have ended up turning to new paths as translators, or even butchersand fishmongers. Supply and demand strikes again! How about beyond education? What are the paths that everyone takes? Everyone rushes to buy a house and we are left with rising prices of homes and apartments that may be highly inflated. Everyone needs to purchase a car and we are left with traffic jams that last over a week! Everyone flocks to Xiangshan in the spring to look at the blooming flowers only to see the backs of other people’s heads. Too often people are sheep refusing to separate from the flock. They become nervous and uneasy when they step out of line. However, isn’t this sometimes necessary? Why do we not buy a cheaper home in a smaller town? Why do we not use public transportation instead of worrying about a car? Why do we not go see Sakura blossoms in Wuhan instead of the Fragrant Hills? The pressure to travel with others is strong for it is always easier to go with the flow.We must learn to love the lonely path, not fear it. Not always is the popular path a safe one. There are always options. The road less traveled can be fun.Learning Spanish changes you. You become more colorful, more noisy, more gossipy, more outrageous, more daring. It is like having a personality transplant. Now I encourage people around me to take risks, not unlike entering an English Speaking competition as a Spanish Major. Even though I have chosen the less travelled road to learn Spanish, I am not restricted from detouring into English as I have today. I don’t dream about the road I didn’t take that so many of my friends did. We are lucky to have so many paths in front of us, but there is no single correct path for all of us. We must find our own way. Luckily my path is clear, Spanish is calling. Hasta la vista. Our future: a battle between dreams and realityGood afternoon, ladies and gentlemen: When I was in the primary school, I havea dream.

To me March 28th was a lucky day. It was on that particular evening that I found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. Winning the "21st Century·Ericsson Cup" Seventh National English Speaking Competition is a memory that I shall treasure and one that will surely stay.More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the competition helps boost public speaking in China, a skill hitherto undervalued. For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. Habitually shy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. Encouraged by my friends, however, I made a last-minute decision to give it a try. In the course of preparation I somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. Those ideas that finally find their waysintosanother head need to be recognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating. In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.Only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. Pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: Is your language competent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for my "appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response". In so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters. Some contestants failed to address their questions head on. Some were able to, but did not knowswheresto stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. The root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. Or they were thinking of what they had prepared. As I said in my speech, "It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ……to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way". We need to respond honestly.A competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public speaking. Since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. And this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting. And the following is the final version of my speech:GLOBALIZATION:OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGESFOR CHINA'S YOUNGER GENERATIONThirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an epoch-making visit to China, a country still isolated at that time. Premier Zhou Enlai said to him, "Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication". Thirty years since, China and America have exchanged many handshakes. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. Peace and prosperity has become a commongoal that we are striving for all over the world. Underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of E. M. Forster's words "Only connect!"With the IT revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshedsintosone large melting pot of humanity. In this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.China is now actively integratingsintosthe world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From a precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership, we have come a long way.But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation's economic health. We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality. Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businesses. For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? Globalization entails questions that concern us all.Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. There might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. This is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech。

crossing the seagood afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is crossing the sea. an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in his poem we and they:all the people like us are weand everyone else is theywe live over the seawhile they live over the waywe eat pork and beef with cowhorn-handled knivesthey who gobble their rice off a leafare horrified out of their lives.when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked-how could two peoples remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? todays society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat withcowhorn-handled knives might be very skillful in using chopsticks, and those people who used to gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.indeed, just take china as an example: our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that its no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonalds and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.however, these are only some expressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nations mentality. just look around.how many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in todays speech contest. who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? and im quite certain that if confucius had lived to see todays china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an ueserved expression of their passion.it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong inf1uence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.take the united states as an example: during the 1980s,in face of the overwhelming competition from japan, many american companies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.take the chinese acupuncture as another example: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body -- an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional uest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race. to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighterfuture, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller.my dear fellow students, our command of the english language renders it possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity. therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural exchanges and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.it is my happiest dream that the new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca-cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:all the people like us are weand everyone else is theybut once you cross over the seayou will end by looking on weas only a sort of they thank you.
