TECHNOLOGY WIND[

1My neighbours are kind and helpful . Some of them are volunteers. They have different skills and often help us with all kinds of problems.Usually there is a “helping hands” meeting at the weekend. People go there when the y need help with their problems. Computer engineers are popular. They help people check their computers. You can also find someone to fix things like broken bicycles.Students can get help with their homework. There are some college students among the volunteers, and they are always ready to help. We are lucky to live in a neighbourhood like that. People here are like a big family.2We need to do something for giant pandas. They are now in danger. For example, giant pandas do not have many babies during t heir lives, and it’s easy for baby pandas to get sick and die when they are very young. Also, giant pandas mainly live on a special kind of bamboo, so the bamboo forests are very important to them. However, the bamboo forests are becoming smaller and smaller. As a result, giant pandas may not have a place to live or food to eat. There are now only about1,600 pandas in the wild. We should take action to protect them right away.3Many teenagers suffer from stress. Although they may worry a lot about their problems, there are simple ways to deal with them. Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly are all important for young people. At school, planning ahead can help. Making a list of all the things they need to do and planning when to do them can help students organize their time. They should not worry too much about being popular. They should just be themselves. Finally, students should make enough time for their hobbies. Playing sport, reading and watching films can help them relax.4Zhalong Nature Reserve is in north-east China. It is one of the world’s most important wetlands. The area provides food and cover for a lot of wildlife. It is a perfect place for some rare birds. Some people want to make the wetlands smaller in order to have more space for farms and buildings. This will lead to less and less space for wildlife. Now the Chinese government has made laws to protect Zhalong. Wetlands are important because they provide food and shelter for wildlife, including some endangered birds, and they also help prevent floods. We must protect the home of plants, fish and birds in Zhalong.5We have a students’ radio station on our school. It started two years ago. I have been a member of the radio station for two years.Every morning we tell the students about the weather and the latest news, plus some special messages that the teachers want us to mention. We also have a special programme that tells students the things they should or shouldn’t do when they prepare for their exams. When parents come to visit the school, we always play songs sung by the students, and we also report special events.I will graduate soon, I’ll really miss the radio station.6All around the world, people drink tea. But tea does not mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries people have very different ideas about drinking tea.In China people like to have tea together with their friends. They drink tea at any time of the day. They put only tea leaves in their cups. They prefer tea with nothing in it.Tea is also popular in Japan. People have tea every day. But the way they drink it is different from that in China. In the USA people drink tea at breakfast or after meals. They usually use tea bags to make their tea.7Dear SirI would like to recommend Daniel for this year’s Young Star Award. Daniel is a clever boy. He learn things quickly. He always thinks carefully when he works. He plans everything well. Daniel is really kind. Last week, a 5-year-old boy lost his way and was crying in the street. Daniel saw him and took him to the police station. He stayed with the boy and played with him for two hours before the boy’s parents came. All the members of the helping hands club think that Daniel should get the award. We look forward to hearing from you soon.Yours faithfullySandy8If you want to live to be 100 years, you need healthy food and regular exercise. In the morning, cereal an congee are good for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, you can have rice, vegetable and some meat. You can have an orange or an apple after each meal. You need regular exercise too. You can exercise for about 30 minutes every day. You can swim, run and play basketball. However, do not play computer games or chat with friends on the Internet for hours every day. This is not exercise.Get out of you chair, everyone! Change your diet and lifestyle today!9New York, London, Paris and many other cities are exciting places to live. There are lots of interesting things to see and do.But there are serious problems in big cities too. It is expensive to live there, and there are too many people. Every year many people move to the cities to find work, study at good school and receive high-quality medical care. But sometimes these people can’t find work or good places to live. Also it is hard to keep big cities safe and clean. So, before people move to a big city, they should think about the problems they might have to deal with there.10Swimming is very popular in summer. People like swimming in summer because water cools them down. But if you swim in the wrong place, it may be dangerous. In the past few years many swimmers have died in the water. However, some people are still nor careful enough when swimming. They often think they swim so well that nothing can happen to them. Summer is coming soon. If you go swimming, remember these two rules: don’t get into water when you are alone and don’t get into the water if there is a ‘no swimming’ sign. If you remember these two, swimming will be safer.11Dinosaurs lived on Earth a long time ago. We now know that the first dinosaurs appeared about 230 million years ago. There were hundreds of different kinds of dinosaurs, but they didn’t live at the same time. Some dinosaurs were really small. One of the smallest dinosaurs was about one meter long and weighed about three kilograms. Others were really big. Some very large ones weighed over 100,000 kilograms and some were about 40 meters long. Some dinosaurs ate plants and others ate meat, but they didn’t eat grass. All dinosaurs had four legs and lived on land.13This year’s Beijing Music Awards will be covered live. The presentation will be held in Beijing this coming Saturday. Children wear special costumes and masks on Halloween. Many children play a game called ‘trick or treat’. They knock on their neighbours’ doors and shout ‘trick or treat’. Their neighbours usually give them some candy asa‘treat’. If the children do not get any candy, they can play a t rick on their neighbours. Some people also make lantern out of big orange pumpkins. They cut out the eyes, the nose and sharp teeth. They put candles in them so the light shines through the eyes, the nose and the teeth.16The Internet can show you a lot of jobs all over the world. If you want to find a job on the Internet, use the word ‘job search’ or ‘employment’ to find the websites you need. Type in what you want and where you want to work. In a few seconds, a list of jobs will appear on the screen. Or you can type in the name of a company to learn about the jobs there.Job search websites can help in other ways, too. They show how to write a good resume and how to prepare for an interview. They also tell you what to say to an interviewer on the telephone. A good employment website can be a big help in your job search.17Dear MillieThank you very much for your letter. I hope I can offer you some useful advice. You said you often stay up late to finish all your homework. Plan your day carefully. Make a listof all the homework you have. Then work out how much time you need to finish it all. This will give you an idea of how much spare time you have. You also said that you do not have enough time for your hobbies. What about choosing your hobby according to the time you have. I hope you think my advice is worth taking.Best wishes,Helen1810th OctoberDear diary,Today is our open day. Our parents come to visit our school on this day. Our school looks beautiful . The playground is very big, and our classrooms are clean and bright. There are 18 classrooms in the classroom in the classroom building, and my classroom is on the ground floor. We also have an art room, a music room and two computer rooms. Our library is new and modern. There are lots of books. We often go there in the afternoon. We also have a school hall. We have meetings there. Our school is really nice. We all love it.19I have to choose a new colour for my bedroom. It is a very important decision, because colour can change a person’s mood. I like orange, because it’s a happy, warm colour. It can make people feel comfortable. My best friend Jack doesn’t agree though. He thinks green is better. Jack says that green represents nature and that it can make you feel energetic. I remind Jack that green is also the colour of envy. My mother recommends blue. She thinks blue creates a feeling of harmony, so it will make me less stressed and help me relax after school. Perhaps she is right.20My ideal school starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 3 p.m. I love sports and computers, so we have PE and computer studies every day. The classes are quite small. There are about 20 students in each class. There is a big dining hall, where we can eat and chat with our friends. There is a park on one side of our school and a shopping mall on the other. We have a big library. We also have a tennis court and a swimming pool. There are lots of clubs and after-school activities. Every month, we go on a school trip to a museum or a theater.21Dear SandyI have just listened to a programme on the radio. It was about a new CD-ROM pack called ‘Daily English’. It is a new course from Australia. The pack includes a book and five CD-ROMs. It is very good for tourists and students. I’m sure we can learn a lot from it. We can learn about how to use the telephone and how to ask and answer questions. We can also learn to talk about the weather and time. The course covers many topics, such as travel and hotels, food and drink, and shopping and money.I am going to order a pack online. Do you want me to order one for you too?RegardsMillie22Dear Mr Wu Our class has decided to hold a charity show. We call it ‘Sunshine For All’. The show will be held at 7.30 p.m. on the 29th of April. It will finish at 9.30 p.m. We want to raise money for a charity called Project Hope. We think it does a very important job. The tickets cost 20 yuan each. Many classmates have volunteered to do some work for the show. Kitty and I will design the poster. Millie will be the hostess of the show. She will also help Simon organize a play. Daniel and Kitty will sing a song.We hope to see you there!Sandy23Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, ‘Friends are God’s way of taking care of us.’ But how do you find real friendship and keep it?First, you should choose a friend. A good friend should be kind and helpful. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his or her best to help. But friendships are not always perfect. Even best friends have fights. When you have a fight with your friend, try to talk to him or her. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, don’t be sad. You could write a letter instead.24Ten years ago, mobile phones were rather expensive. Only important or rich people had them. However, these days more people have them in their hands, even high school students. It is true that mobile phones can be very useful. They are an easy way to keep in touch with friends and family members anywhere and at any time. But we also hear mobile phones ringing in places like classrooms, cinemas and museums. The sound id very loud and can disturb people. Some drivers have accidents because they use their mobile phones while driving. So, are mobile phones really a good thing?25Dear JohnHow are you? I left school early yesterday because the snowstorm started again in the afternoon and it got worse later. This morning I read a newspaper article about a car accident. A man named Su Ning called 110 at 7.40 p.m. using his mobile phone. His car crashed into a tree while he was driving in the snowstorm. He and his wife were trapped in the car. The snow was heavy and it covered everything. The policemen arrived at once and sent them to hospital. Luckily, they were not hurt. What about London? Do you have snowstorm there? Please e-mail me soon.Maggie26Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. He got his first basketball when he was only four years old, but he did not become serious about basketball until he was 12. Yao joined the Houston Rockets in 2002 and became the best Chinese player that ever played in the NBA. When Yao Ming left the USA, he returned to China where he was needed. He took part in the Olympics in 2004 and in 2008 as one of the Chinese athletes. After he ended his basketball career, Yao has done a lot of charity work, especially for poor Chinese teenagers.27UNICEF was set up in 1946 to help children after the war in Europe. Now, UNICEF helps children all over the world. It works in 158 countries. It helps governments and families make the world a better place for children. UNICEF gets its money from donations. It raises money by selling Christmas cards and organizing other fund-raising activities. People can help UNICEF by doing voluntary work.UNICEF believes that all children should have clean water and food so that they can be healthy. It also believes that they should go to school instead of working to support their families.28During the day we work and play. At night we sleep. In the morning we are ready to work and play again. While we are asleep, our bodies grow most. We can do better at our lessons and we feel better too when we have had enough rest. Boys and girls who are eight or nine years old need ten hours of sleep every nigh. Our bodies need plenty of air when we sleep. If we do not get enough fresh air, we will be tired when we wake up. While in bed we must not cover our heads. If we do, we will not get enough fresh air. If we open our windows at night, we can have plenty of fresh air. Boys and girls who want to grow and be strong must get plenty of sleep.29I think Wang Jian is the most suitable person to be the chairperson of the Students’ union. She has many excellent qualities. First, Wang Jian is outgoing: She really enjoys talking to people. Second, she knows team works is important: She can work easily with people and she works very hard. Third, Wang Jian is very clever. She does well in exams and often helps us with our work. Finally, Wang Jian is very organized. She arranges badminton practices after school and she is captain of the school team. I think Wang Jian would be an excellent chairperson. I hope that you will vote for her.30One day, when Ton came home from work, he found a diamond necklace outside his door. Only 20 students usually take showers for less than 10 minutes, but 35 students turn off the tap when brushing their teeth. Only 15 students recycle empty bottles, but 40 students use both sides of the paper. It is great that most students remember to turn off the lights when they leave a room, but few students take their own bags to the supermarket. The survey shows that students are doing a lot to help protect the environment, but there are still many more things they can do.SandyDear Millie,Thank you for your letter. I hope I can offer you some useful advice. You said you often stay up late to finish all your homework. Plan your day carefully. Make a list of all the homework you have. Then work out how much time you need to finish it all. This will give you an idea of how much spare time you have. You also said that you do not have enough time for your hobbies. What about choosing your hobby according to the time you have?I hope you think my advice is worth taking.Best wishes,Helen18 (全新)Yesterday we visited the Summer Palace and spent about three hours in it. The palace is a large Chinese garden set in a natural landscape and mainly includes a hill and a lake. The lake is very big - it takes up three quarters of the area. It was frozen, so we could not row a boat there. It was really a pity. Across the lake is a 17-hole bridge. There are over 50 stone lions on both sides of it. The lions are all different from each other. Isn't it amazing? The Summer Palace was once a nice place for the emperors to spend the summer and it was well worth a visit.19I have to choose a new colour for my bedroom. It is a very important decision, because colour can change a person's mood. I like orange, because it's a happy, warm colour. It can make people feel comfortable. My best friend Jack doesn't agree though. He thinks green is better. Jack says that green represents nature and that it can make you feel energetic. I remind Jack that green is also the colour of envy. My mother recommends blue. She thinks blue creates a feeling of harmony, so it will make me less stressed and help me relax after school. Perhaps she is right.20My ideal school starts at 8 a.m. and finishes at 3 p.m.I love sports and computers, so we have PE and computer studies every day. Every month, we go on a school trip to a museum or a theatre.Dear Sandy,I have just listened to a programme on the radio. It was about a new CD-ROM pack called 'Daily English'. It is a new course from Australia. The pack includes a book and five CD-ROMs. It is very good for tourists and students. I'm sure we can learn a lot from it. We can learn about how to use the telephone and how to ask and answer questions. We can also learn to talk about the weather and the time. The course covers many topics, such as travel and hotels, food and drink, and shopping and money.I am going to order a pack online. Do you want me to order one for you too?RegardMillie"22 (全新)I love reading. I spend over seven hours a week reading different types of books. On weekdays, I usually read for about half an hour before going to bed. I read a lot at the weekend. I am interested in history books, but I like novels best. The four great classical Chinese novels are my favourite.I get most of my books from Sunshine Library - it is just opposite my home. My friends give me lots of advice on books. We often meet together and discuss what to read.Reading is always a wonderful time. Good books are good friends. They also open up a whole new world to me.23Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, ""Friends are God's way of taking care of us."" But how do you find real friendship and keep it?First, you should choose a friend. A good friend should be kind and helpful. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his or her best to help. But friendships are not always perfect. Even best friends have fights. When you have a fight with your friend, try to talk to him or her. If he or she doesn't want to talk, don't be sad. You could write a letter instead.24 (小改动)Twenty years ago, mobile phones were rather expensive. The sound is very loud and can disturb people. Some drivers have accidents because they use their mobile phones while driving. So, are mobile phones really a good thing?25Dear John,How are you? I left school early yesterday because the snowstorm started again in the afternoon and it got worse later. This morning I read a newspaper article about a car accident. A man named Su Ning called 110 at 7.40 p.m. using his mobile phone. His car crashed into a tree while he was driving in the snowstorm. He and his wife were trapped in the car. The snow was heavy and it covered everything. The policemen arrived at once and sent them to hospital. Luckily, they were not hurt. What about London? Do you have snowstorms there? Please e-mail me soon.Maggie26Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. He got his first basketball when he was only four years old, but he did not become serious about basketball until he was 12. It is a mixed school. Boys and girls have lessons together. My favourite subject is French. Learning foreign languages is fun. Our school has a Reading Week every year. During the week, we can borrow more books from the school library. We can also bring in books and magazines from home. I often read more books than my classmates. Near the end of the week, we discuss the books with our classmates in class. Time seems to go faster when we are reading interesting books.29 (全新)In the Chinese lunar calendar, there are 12 animal signs. Each of them represents a lunar year.It is said that the animals held an exciting race to decide their order. After the race began, the strong, hard-working Ox took the lead. Suddenly, the clever Rat jumped on the Ox's back and won the race! The Ox came second, the Tiger third, and so it went. The Pig took his time and came last. The cycle of animal years repeats every 12 years. Some people believe that people born in the same animal year may share similar characteristics. For example, they believe people born in the Year of the Dragon are powerful and energetic."30 (全新)Kites have a long history in China. The Chinese began to make kites over 2,000 years ago. The first kite in history was made out of wood by Mozi. His student Lu Ban used bamboo to make kites. In the Eastern Han dynasty, Cai Lun found a new way to make paper, and then people began to use paper to make kites. In the 13th century, an Italian man called Marc Polo visited China.
