Comments on Dover Beach
Comments on Dover Beach
Form and structure theme and subjectComments on Form and Structure"Dover Beach" consists of four stanzas, each containing a variable number of verses. The first stanza has 14 lines, the second 6, the third 8 and the fourth 9. As for the metrical scheme, there is no apparent rhyme scheme, but rather a free handling of the basic iambic pattern. In stanza 3 there is a series of open vowels ("Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar" (l. 25). A generally falling syntactical rhythm can be detected and continues into stanza 4. In this last stanza one can find seven lines of iambic pentameter (l.31-37), with the rhyme scheme of abbacddcc.According to Ruth Pitman, this poem can be seen as "a series of incomplete sonnets", and David G. Riede adds:The first two sections each consist of 14 lines that suggest but do not achieve strict sonnet form, and except for a short (three foot) opening line, the last section emulates the octave of a sonnet, but closes with a single, climactic line instead of a sestet — as though the final five lines had been eroded. (197)The thoughts do not appear as obviously structured and organized as in "Calais Sands", which is accentuated by the fact that run-on lines are mixed with end-stopped lines. In the first stanza the rhythm of the poem imitates the "movement of the tide" (l.9-14). [Roy Thomas, How to read a Poem? (London: University of London Press Ltd, 1961) 102. Hereafter cited as "Thomas."Terms of Art"Dover Beach" is a melancholic poem. Matthew Arnold uses the means of 'pathetic fallacy', when he attributes or rather projects the human feeling of sadness onto an inanimate object like the sea. At the same time he creates a feeling of 'pathos'. The reader can feel sympathy for the suffering lyrical self, who suffers under the existing conditions. The repetition of "is" in lines 1-4 is used to illustrate the nightly seaside scenery:The sea is calm tonight, the tide is full, the moon lies fair Upon the straits; on the Frenchcoast the light Gleams and is gone; . . . [emphasis mine]It leads up to an eventual climax with 'the light/ gleams and is gone’. The first two is portray wh at can be seen. The last 'is' emphasizes that the light is not there, that it cannot be seen any longer, but is gone and leaves nothing but darkness behind. In a metaphorical sense of the word, not only the light is gone, but also certainty. The darkness makes it hard to define both one's own and somebody else's position, and one can never be certain that the light will ever return.A repetition of neither...nor in stanza 4 underlines a series of denials: ". . . neither joy, nor love, nor light/ nor certitude, nor peace, nor help for pain;" (l. 33-34) [emphasis mine]. All these are basic human values. If none of these do truly exist, this raises the question of what remains at all. With these lines, Arnold draws a very bleak and nihilistic view of the world he is living in.As in "Calais Sands", he uses a lot of adjectives to enrich the poem's language, such as "tremulous cadence" (l.13) and "eternal note of sadness" (l.14). These help to increase the general melancholic feeling of the poem.Exclamations are used at various points of the poem with quite opposite effects. In the first stanza, Arnold displays an outwardly beautiful nightly seaside scenery, when the lyrical self calls his love to the window ("Come. ..!" (l.6)) to share with him the serenity of the evening. First she is asked to pay attention to the visual, then to the aural impression ("Listen!" (l.9)).In the fourth stanza, however, after he has related his general disillusionment with the world, he pledges for his love to be faithful ('true') to him. ("Ah, love, let us be true/To one another! . . ." (l. 29-30))A simile in stanza 3 ("like the folds of a bright girdle furled," l. 13)) contrasts with "Vast edgesdrear/and naked shingles of the world." (l. 27-28). Peter Hühn calls this "Kleidervergleich" and explains:Es tritt andeutungsweise noch ein weiteres Bild zur Meeresmetapher hinzu, der Kleidervergleich, der die Sinnentleerung als Prozess der Entblössung wiedergibt . . . [74]Throughout the poem, the sea is used as an image and a metaphor. At first, it is beautiful to look at in the moonlight (ll.1-8), then it begins to make hostile sounds ("grating roar" (l. 9); "tremulous cadence" (l.13)) that evoke a general feeling of sadness. In the third stanza, the sea is turned into a metaphoric "Sea of Faith" (l.21) — a symbol for a time when religion could still be experienced without the doubts brought about by progress and science (Darwinism). Now, the 'Sea of Faith' and thus the certainty of religion withdraw itself from the human grasp and leaves only darkness behind.Theme and SubjectThe first stanza opens with the description of a nightly scene at the seaside. The lyrical self calls his addressee to the window, to share the visual beauty of the scene. Then he calls her attention to the aural experience, which is somehow less beautiful. The lyrical self projects his own feelings of melancholy on to the sound of "the grating roar /of pebbles, which the waves draw back, and fling/ At their return, up the high strand" (ll.9-11). This sound causes an emotion of "sadness" (l.14) in him.The second stanza introduces the Greek author Sophocles' idea of "the turbid ebb and flow of human misery" (ll.17-18). A contrast is formed to the scenery of the previous stanza. Sophocles apparently heard the similar sound at the "Aegean" sea (l. 16) and thus developed his ideas. Arnold then reconnects this idea to the present. Although there is a distance in time and space ("Aegean" — "northern sea" (L. 20)), the general feeling prevails. In the third stanza, the sea is turned into the "Sea of Faith" (l.21), which is a metaphor for a time (probably the Middle Ages) when religion could still be experienced without the doubt that the modern (Victorian) age brought about through Darwinism, the Industrial revolution, Imperialism, a crisis in religion, etc.) Arnold illustrates this by using an image of clothes ('Kleidervergleich'). When religion was still intact, the world was dressed ("like the folds of a bright girdle furled" (l. 23)). Now that this faith is gone, the world lies there stripped naked and bleak. ("the vast edges drear/ and naked shingles of the world" (ll. 27-28))The fourth and final stanza begins with a dramatic pledge by the lyrical self. He asks his love to be "true" (l.29), meaning faithful, to him. ("Ah, love, let us be true /To one another!" (ll. 29-30)). For the beautiful scenery that presents itself to them ("for the world, which seems/ To lie before us like a land of dreams,/ So various, so beautiful, so new" (ll.30-32)) is really not what it seems to be. On the contrary, as he accentuates with a series of denials, this world does not contain any basic human values. These have disappeared, along with the light and religion and left humanity in darkness. "We" (l.35) could just refer to the lyrical self and his love, but it could also be interpreted as the lyrical self addressing humanity. The pleasant scenery turns into a "darkling plain" (l. 35), where only hostile, frightening sounds of fighting armies can be heard:And we are here as on a darkling plainSwept with confused alarms of struggle and flight,Where ignorant armies clash by night." (ll.35-37).Conclusion:This poem is, unarguably, about a loss of faith. With many new philosophies during the Victorian Era, such as existentialism, materialism, socialism, darwinism, anarchism and a lot more -ism's, a massive stepping down from the Christian faith occured (in Great Britain). Matthew Arnold places the poem in a more existentialist/agnostic view, as he does not question God, but the way people follow God and the decline in what their faith was before the Victorian Era.What he describes in Dover Beach, the seemingly peaceful Sea of Faith, only serves to compare his real view of the church. Historically, during the Victorian Era, the Anglican Church became what some would call a "decorated coffin". People would go to service because it was a tradition, or a habit- one of the original reasons the Anglican church had trouble with the Catholics (as the Catholics were more prone to this, and the Anglicans supported more "liberal" ideas at the time). What Arnold sees is a dead church and a reality in which there is nothing to look forward to.Bibliography:1、WWW Version. BibRef 97032、John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1983. Literature Review of Pamela
Cultural and Religious Studies, December 2022, Vol. 10, No. 12, 749-752doi: 10.17265/2328-2177/2022.12.007 Literature Review of PamelaCHU ShiqiGannan Normal University, Ganzhou, ChinaAs one of the best renowned English novelists in the 18th century, Richardson has created several excellent literaryworks, among which his first epistolary novel Pamela pioneered English Sentimentalism literature. Since publication,Pamela has been paid much attention to and studied by scholars at home and abroad from different perspectives. Asfor me, I ’d like to mainly give an introduction of the research situation of Pamela at home and abroad. It will be ofgreat benefit to promote our comprehensive understanding of the novel, thus bringing us much practical significance. Keywords: Pamela , Literature review, At home and abroadSamuel Richardson is one of the best renowned English novelists in the 18th century. His representative works include Pamela , Clarissa , The History of Sir Charles Grandison , and so forth, among which his first epistolary novel Pamela pioneered English Sentimentalism literature. Since its publication, Pamela has received extensive attention and multi-angle research from scholars at home and abroad.Foreign scholars have carried out plenty of systematic research on Pamela since its publication.Numerous foreign scholars liked to analyze and study Pamela from the perspective of Feminism. In “A Room of Pamela’s Own” (1972), Robert F olkenfilk believed that Pamela’s freedom had always been strictly limited and Pamela had failed to strive for women’s freedom even a fter marriage, which further verified the essence of bourgeois society and the limitations of the era. In Jane Spenser’s opinion, Richardson’s literary creation represented by Pamela made a great contribution to the rise of female novelists, as was revealed in her book The Rise of the Woman Novelist: From Aphra Behn to Jane Austen (1986). As far as Flint (1989) was concerned, Pamela’s thought and behaviors were deeply influenced by her family and class. In “Pamela and the Duplicitous Body of Femininity” (1991), Tassie Gwilliam attached great importance to feminine hypocrisy and duplicity. In “Enclosing the Immovable: Structuring Social Authority in Pamela, Part II” (1991), Betty Schellenberg mainly focused on Pamela’s development process. In “Public Context and Imaging Self” (1996), Morris Golden held the view that Pamela’s struggles in her life was essentially Samuel Richardson’s own resistance in the patriarchal society, reflecting the nature of that era.Psychological analysis is another significant perspective to study Pamela . For instance, in Samuel Richardson: Dramatic Novelist (1973), M. Kinkead-Weekes thought highly of the skills applied in psychological description in Pamela . And Ian Watt focused on the modern narrative techniques in psychology in Pamela in the book The Rise of the Novel: Studies in Defoe, Richardson and Fielding (1981).Many scholars also studied Pamela from the perspective of Narratology. In “The Time Scheme of Pamela and the Character of B” (1969), Parker analyzed the narrative s kills of the novel from the narrative time of Pamela’s letter s . In “The Trial Narrrative in Richardson’s Pamela: Suspending the Hermeneutic of Happiness”CHU Shiqi, Master Degree Candidate, School of Foreign Languages, Gannan Normal University, Ganzhou, China.DA VID PUBLISHINGDLITERA TURE REVIEW OF P AMELA750(2007), Soni analyzed the narrative strategy of Pamela from two aspects: Pamela’s virtue and Mr. B. In the chapter “Pamela and Plato: Ancient and Modern Epistolary Narratives” of the book Defining Greek Narrative (2014), A. D. Morris compared the ancient and modern epistolary narration in detail, which is beneficial for readers to have a better understanding of the narrative methods in Pamela.Other scholars paid attention to the text analysis of Pamela, and made a specific analysis from the aspects of novel structure, plot, language, and so on. In “Richard’s Pamela: An Interpretation” (1973), Stuart Wilson analyzed the composition structure of the novel Pamela and believed that it realized the unity, balance, and symmetry in structure. In “‘A Geometry of His Own’: Richardson and the Marriage-Ending” (1986), Stevenson focused on the last part of Pamela from the perspective of plot analysis. In “Corresponding Freedom: Language and the Self in Pamela” (1985), Mckee’s attention was paid to the language of the novel Pamela, so as to highlight its unique role in the composition of the text.It should be noted that the morality advocated by Samuel Richardson in his novel Pamela has attracted a large number of foreign scholars, and there has been a mixed reaction towards morality in the novel. For example, from this perspective, Catherine Ingrassia paid much attentio n to Pamela’s virtue in the book Authorship, Commerce, and Gender in Early Eighteenth-Century England: A Culture of Paper Credit (1998). In addition, some critics has adopted other perspectives, such as Marxist approaches, the reader-response perspective, dramatic technique, and so forth. For instance, In Literary Theory: An Introduction(1983), Terry Eagleton focused on Pamela from the perspective of Marxist Criticism. And Malvin Zirker made an analysis of Pamela by taking the perspective of reader-respons e in “Richardson’s Correspondence: The Personal Letter as Private Experience” (1966).Domestic research on Pamela started late and the perspectives mainly focused on the concept of chastity, Feminism, epistolary style, morality, and parody.Pamela is also known as “Virtue Rewarded”. The concept of chastity is undoubtedly a research angle that cannot be ignored. In “Chastity, Virtue and Reward—On the Concept of Chastity in Pamela” (2006), Zhu Weihong analyzed the relationship between chastity, virtue, and r eward, believing that the “chastity reward theory” put forward by Samuel Richardson exactly catered to psychological need of the bourgeoisie at that time. In “Pamela’s Virtue of Chastity” (2019), Zhang Lin concluded that the successful narration of the vir tue of chastity in Pamela is the result of the joint action of society, the author, the work, and readers by analyzing the virtue of chastity embodied in the novel. Many scholars analyzed Pamela from the perspective of Feminism. For example, in “Pamela: Th e Distorted Female World Under Male Discourse” (2008), Liu Miao explored the inner contradictions of the characters on the basis of the female psychology in the novel, revealing the control of patriarchy over female discourse. In “Reading Samuel Richardson’s View on Female From Pamela” (2010), Huang Bihui analyzed Pamela as a female image and came to the con clusion that Samuel Richardson’s view of women is negative which had certain limitations. In “Pamela in ‘Captivity’: Women’s Predicament in the Eighteenth Century” (2018), Huang Fangfang combined Feminism with P sychoanalysis to analyze Pamela’s imprisonmen t in several aspects and argued that Pamela had never broken away from the spiritual shackles imposed on women in the patriarchal society. Some scholars analyzed Pamela from the perspective of epistolary style. In “On the Characteristics of British Epistol ary Novels in the 18th Century” (2010), Liu Qiong analyzed the basic characteristics of epistolary novels which include privacy, immediacy, and dialogue in Pamela. In “The Epistolary Narrative Strategy inLITERA TURE REVIEW OF P AMELA751Pamela” (2015), Si Ruolan analyzed Pamela from the first person and the Sentimentalism in the epistle to explore the heroine’s inner emotional world. In“O n the Narrative Mode of British Epistolary Literature” (2015), Zhu Zhanwei revealed the era environment for the development of epistolary novels, the characteristics of epistolary novels as well as the evolution and development of epistolary novels.Morality is also a very important research angle. In “Pamela: Women’s Moral Model and Resistance Consciousness” (2009), Zhao Qing analyzed the revolution and resistance consciousness of the protagonist, believing that Pamela’s resistance is incomplete and limited. In “The Construction of New Moral Paradigm in Pamela” (2015), Zhang Li analyzed the deconstruction of traditional moral paradigm and the construction of new moral paradigm with middle-class moral quality, believing that Pamela reflected the middle class’s desire to realize the restructuring of social power structure through moral reform. Some scholars have shown great interest in the parody of Pamela. In “O n the Parody of Pamela by Shamela” (2015), Yang Wenhui analyzed the failures of Shamela in pl ot setting, characterization, and theme. In “Parody: The Anti-Pamela Factors in Joseph Andrews” (2017), Du Juan analyzed the parody of Pamela in Joseph Andrews through the setting of character relations and the comparison of character images, holding that the creation of anti-Pamela is the starting point of Fielding’s moral construction. In“Pamela or Shamela—Interpretation of the Complex Contradiction in Pamela” (2017), Shang Shi made an analysis of the complex contradiction of Pamela’s image from three aspects: social level, the author’s reason, and stylistic factors. To sum up, in terms of Pamela, foreign scholars have conducted comparatively systematic research, while domestic research on it lags behind in the 20th century and there are relatively fewer research results; nevertheless, multi-angle analysis and exploration are involved.
Mikhail Bakhtin's Poetics and the Works of Fyodor DostoevskyMikhail Bakhtin, the renowned Russian literary critic and philosopher, is widely recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of literary works, particularly the writings of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Bakhtin's analysis of Dostoevsky's poetics has had a profound impact on the way we interpret and appreciate the complexities of the renowned Russian author's literary oeuvre. At the heart of Bakhtin's exploration of Dostoevsky's poetics lies the concept of the polyphonic novel. Bakhtin argued that Dostoevsky's works depart from the traditional monologic structure of the novel, where a single authorial voice dominates the narrative. Instead, Dostoevsky's novels are characterized by a plurality of independent and fully developed voices, each with its own distinct perspective and worldview. This polyphonic approach, Bakhtin contends, allows for a genuine dialogue between the characters, where no single voice or ideology is privileged over the others. One of the key aspects of Bakhtin's analysis is his understanding of the role of the hero in Dostoevsky's novels. Bakhtin asserts thatDostoevsky's heroes are not passive objects of the author's design but rather autonomous individuals with the capacity to challenge and even contradict the author's own views. This notion of the hero as a fully autonomous and self-conscious being is central to Bakhtin's conception of the polyphonic novel.Furthermore, Bakhtin explores the concept of the "unfinalized" hero in Dostoevsky's works. He argues that Dostoevsky's characters are not static, predetermined entities but rather dynamic, ever-evolving individuals who resist being reduced to a single, fixed identity. This idea of the "unfinalized" hero is closely tied to Bakhtin's understanding of the polyphonic novel, where the characters are not merely vehicles for the author's ideas but active participants in the ongoing dialogue that constitutes the literary work.Bakhtin's analysis also delves into the role of language and discourse in Dostoevsky's novels. He suggests that Dostoevsky's works are characterized by a multiplicity of social and ideological languages, each with its own distinct perspective and mode of expression. This heteroglossia, as Bakhtin terms it, serves to undermine the notion of a single, authoritative voice and instead presents a cacophony of competing voices and worldviews. Moreover, Bakhtin's exploration of Dostoevsky's poetics extends to the notion of the carnivalesque, a concept that he sees as central tothe author's literary approach. The carnivalesque, in Bakhtin's view, represents a subversive and liberating force that challenges traditional hierarchies and social norms. He argues that Dostoevsky's novels often incorporate elements of the carnival, such as the inversion of power structures, the blurring of boundaries between the sacred and the profane, and the celebration of the body and its functions.Bakhtin's insights into Dostoevsky's poetics have had a lasting impact on the field of literary criticism and have influenced generations of scholars and readers. By illuminating the complex and multifaceted nature of Dostoevsky's literary works, Bakhtin has helped us to better understand the profound philosophical and existential questions that lie at the heart of the Russian author's oeuvre. In conclusion, Mikhail Bakhtin's exploration of Dostoevsky's poetics has been instrumental in shaping our understanding of the Russian author's literary genius. Through concepts such as the polyphonic novel, the "unfinalized" hero, and the carnivalesque, Bakhtin has provided a nuanced and insightful perspective on the rich tapestry of Dostoevsky's literary universe. His work continues to inspire and challenge scholars and readers alike, inviting us to engage with the complexities and contradictions that lie at the core of Dostoevsky's enduring literary legacy.。
A New Algebraization of the Lame Equation
ψ ′′ (x) + E − m ℓ(ℓ + 1) sn2 x ψ (x) = 0 , (1.1)
The Lam´ e equation,
where ℓ is a real parameter1 , and sn x ≡ sn(x|m) is the usual Jacobian elliptic function of modulus m, occupies a central position in the theory of differential equations with periodic coefficients. The study of its properties has attracted the attention of many illustrious mathematicians over the last century; classical references are [1–4]. Basic properties of the Lam´ e equation are as follows. First, it arises by separation of variables in the Laplace equation in ellipsoidal coordinates. Secondly, it possesses two linearly independent 2K (k ) or 4K (k )-periodic solutions (for characteristic √ values of E ) if and only if ℓ is a nonnegative integer. Here k = m, and K (k ) (denoted by K from now on) is the complete elliptic integral of the first kind with parameter k :

Football, as it often is, became an escape. At seven, she was spotted by coach Xu Yilong, who found Wang quick in her playful behaviour. As the only girl in the boys’ team, Wang’s performances were impressive, earning her the nickname “Iron Girl.” And soon, she sensed the sport’s power. Football allowed her to “release herself” and realize “whatever happens, football never leaves you alone.”However, life was never smooth sailing. The constant jibes (嘲讽) from some people, who always tried to push her down and destroy her h opes, affected her so deeply that she lost confidence.” They were saying I had no talent at all. Gradually, I felt really so. “Wang once wrote. But never did she stop playing. When she was called up to the national team, aged 17,Wang thought, “Me? Are you sure?” When a world-famous club wanted to sign her, she was “excited that an excellent coach thought I was good.” It was only then that she felt confident in her abilities. “I felt recognized. Perhaps I had a bit of talent after all.”Not any “bit of talent”; the genius is praised as China’s once-in-a-generation player.China is a pioneer of women’s football in Asia and has won the continental championship eight times, including seven straight titles between 1986 and 1999.That was their golden age. Gradually, though, the dynasty declined. It is hoped that Wang will inspire the women’s football of the country to its former height.Coaches are almost always hesitant to speak about individual players. But when coach Shui was asked about Wang before the match ag ainst Vietnam, she couldn’t stop mentioning her influence on the team. Unfailingly performing on the big stage, Wang did not let her team down. When they lacked a quality ball, she delivered two high assists that finally led her team into the last-four clash (交锋).“Nobody knows how hard it was,“ declared Wang after the match. “We overcame difficulties. We also showed our strong spiritual power. I am proud of my team.”4. What can we infer about Wang from the second paragraph?A.She earned a living on her own. B.She felt the power of sports.C.She was laughed at by the boys. D.She found a sense of belonging5. How did Wang regain faith in her abilities?A.By winning recognition. B.By getting encouragement.C.By playing in the national team. D.By ignoring o ther people’s jibes.6. Which would best describe coach Shui’s attitude to Wang?A.Caring. B.Unwilling. C.Favorable. D.Demanding7. And with that growing contact between the two come increasing hybrids (杂交种).With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited to their environments than their parents, but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources,” Larisa DeSantis, a n associate professor of biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science. The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linke d partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears’ ranges, where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears’ highly specialized diets.“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the calories they gain from these source s do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are replaced.“We’re having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming trends.”8. Why are polar bears moving further south?A.To create hybrids. B.To expand ranges.C.To contact grizzlies. D.To relieve hunger.9. What enables “pizzly” bears to adapt to natural surroundings better than their parents?A.Broader habitats. B.Climate preference.C.More food options. D.Improved breeding ability.10. What does the underlined phrase “a tipping point” in paragraph 5 refer to?A.A rare chance. B.A critical stage.C.A positive factor. D.A constant change.11. What’s the main idea of the text?A.Polar bears are changing diets for climate change.B.Polar bears have already adjusted to climate change.C.“Pizzly” bears have replaced polar bears for global warming.D.“Pizzly” bears are on the rise because of global warming. The rechargeable lithium-ion (锂离子) battery market is worth more than $50 billion. Lithium-ion batteries, whose demand continues to go up day by day, are used in a wide range of electronic devices. They are made of four main components, and cathode (阴极) is one of them. The cathode’s active material type is what determines the capacity of a battery.A recent study, led by Wang Yan, a material scientist of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, finds that lithium-ion batteries made with recycled cathodes work better than those with new cathodes. “The battery industry is expected to grow sharply in the next decade. This high demand has led companies to go to extremes, like increasing deep-sea mining, to gain access to the minerals used in lithium-ion batteries,” Wang said. “Mining minerals will have environmental impacts. Recycling spent lithium-ion batteries offers a way out.”But until now, the prospect of using recycled materials in lithium-ion batteries has some manufacturers (制造商) worrying that it could impact performance. Thus, lithium-ion batteries are still not widely recycled. Aware of decreasing resources and environmental impact, Wang and other researchers set out to find a way to make recycling lithium-ion batteries economically practical. Through experiments, they could recover more than 90% of the key metals from spent batteries. These recovered m etals became the basis of the new recycled battery’s cathode’s active material. In tests between Wang’s team’s recycled batteries and brand-new batteries of the same composition, the recycled batteries outperform the new ones in their ability to maintain capacity. It took 11,600 charge cycles for recycled cathode batteries to lose 30 percent of their original capacity. That was about 50 percent better than the 7,600 observed cycles for new cathode batteries, the team reported. Those thousands of extra cycles could translate into years of better battery performance, even after repeated use and recharging.12. What can we learn about lithium-ion batteries from the first paragraph?A.They are high in price.B.They are in great demand.C.They are limited in use.D.They are simple in composition.13. What does Wang mainly talk about in paragraph 3?A.The target users of recycled batteries.B.The ways to get minerals for batteries.C.The major reasons for recycling batteries.D.The complex process of recycling batteries.14. What are the manufacturers concerned about?A.Declining mineral resources.B.Difficult recycling techniques.C.Serious environmental problems.D.Inefficient battery performance.15. Which of the following details best supports the main idea of the text?A.The battery industry is going to develop dramatically.B.Recycling batteries reduces impact on the environment.C.Scientists can recover key materials from spent batteries.D.Recycled batteries outperform new ones in charging circles.Career coaches provide a series of services, from helping you figure out what you want to do to exploring chances for career growth. 16 To make it all worthwhile, some helpful tips are offered here to help you choose a right coach.Know what type of professional you need to hire. 17 In other words, they help you explore your future career possibilities and figure out what is stopping you from advancing in your development.18 Go into your coaching relationship with an idea of what you think you need from them, but be willing to think about their guidance on what other measures may make you more successful- for example, Business Value training to make sure you’ll be satisfied in a new job.Try sample lessons to find the right one. With this change came the abdication of technique. Virtuosity in and of itself, indeed, became something of a dirty word. One of the important new figures, though she was a harpsichordist and not a pianist, was Wanda. Landowska, she was the one who demonstrated how Bach, Handel, Scarlet and Couperin sounded on the instrument for which their music was originally conceived. It would be a mistake to consider Landowska a classicist, however. She had been born in an age of romantic playing, an age dominated by the figures of Liszt, Leschetisky and their pupils. Thus she grew up with certain romantic traditions of performance and whatever the stringency of her musical scholarship, for Landowska knew how to hold an audience breathless and when she gave a recital, it was to the accompaniment that all great artists receive deathlike silence and rapt attention. Her playing was romantic, but who is to say that it was not closer to Bach then the dry munching of some later harpsichordists? She had a miraculous equality of touch, with a left hand that seemed to say the least, colorful. But no artist in this generation (and, one is confident, in any generation) couldclarify with such deftness the polyphonic writing of the baroque masters. And none could make the music so spring to life. Her secret was a lifetime of scholarship, plus perfect technical equipment and resilient rhythm, all combined with knowledge of just when not to hold the printed note sacrosanct. Of course, that alone demands a lifetime of knowledge. She was a genius at underlining the dramatic and did have meaning and emotional significance. She took liberties, all kinds of liberties, but like all great artists she could get away with them. In short, her entire musical approach was romantic: intensely personal, full of light and shade, never pedantic. Thanks to Landowska, Bach began to sound thick when played on the piano. One by one, pianists stopped playing Bach as adapted by Liszt, Bach as adapted by Tausig. Then they began to think twice before performing any kind of baroque music, including even Scarlatti. The piano repertoire, it began to be felt, was extensive enough without reverting to transcriptions and Bach and Scarlatti on the piano were in a way, transcriptions no matter how faithfully the original notes were played. In line with this kind of purity came the emphasis on the back to nature study of the composers’ manuscripts that has continued to the present, will continue and is something new in the scheme of things.GRE阅读词汇精选之香aroma n.芳香,香气aromatic adj.芳香的balm n.香油,药膏balmy adj.(气候)温和的,芳香的flavouring n.香料,· 调味品incense n.香,· 香味v.激怒odoriferous adj.有香味的,· 芳香的perfume n.香味,· 香水redolent adj.芬芳的芳香的scent n.气味,· 香气vanilla n.香草,· 香子兰musky a. 麝香的fragrant a.

The converse observation, of the absence of grazers (食草动物)in areas of high phytoPlankton(浮游植物群落)concentration, led Hardy to propose his principle of animal exclusion , which hypothesized that phytoplankton produced a repellent(驱虫剂) that excluded grazers from regions of high phytoplankton concentration.107. Although these molecules allow radiation at visible at wave lengths, where most of the energy of sunlight is concentrated, to pass through, they absorb some of the longer-wavelength, infrared emission(红外辐射) radiated from the Earth‟s surface, radiation that would otherwise be transmitted back into space.108. In addition, the style of some Black novels, like Jean Toomer‟s Cane, verges on expressionism or surrealism(超现实主义), does this technique provide a counter point to the prevalent theme that portrays the fate against which Black heroes are pitted, a theme usually conveyed by more naturalistic modes of expression?109. Roseenblatt‟s thematic analysis permits considerable objectivity; he even explicitly states that it is not his intention to judge the merit of the various works—yet his reluctance seems misplaced, especially since an attempt to appraise might have led to interesting results.110. Thus, for instance, it may come as a shock to mathematicians to learn that the Schrodinger equation (薛定谔的方程式)for the hydrogen atom is not a literally correct description of this atom, but only an approximation to a somewhat more correct equation taking account of spin, magnetic dipole (磁性偶极子), and relatiristic effects, and that this corrected equation is itself only an imperfect approximation to an infinite set of quantum field theoretical equations( 量子场论方程式). (21)101. Neither Ayat nor the Rassoul brothers noticed, however, that most of the pieces they were selling were of a type not previously seen in the marketplace—pieces whose existence had been suspected but which had not yet been discovered by archaeologists.104. “The biggest construction project of this century”, explained French President Francois Mitterand in January, 1986 as he and then British prime minister Margaret Thatcher jointly announced that the two countries would finally overcome ancient quarrels and prejudices and forge a link across the narrow Channel separating them.105. Perhaps the fact that many of these first studies considered only algae(水藻) of a size that could be collected in a net (net phytoplankton), a practice that overlooked the smaller phytoplankton(浮游植物群落) that we now know grazers are most likely to feed on, led to a de-emphasis of the role of grazers in subsequent research. (20)96. Quite apart from the logistic problems, there existed a well-established tradition in Britain which refused to repatriate against their will people who found themselves in British hands and the nature of whose reception by their own government was, to say the least, dubious.94. An obsession with the exact privileges of a colonial legislature and the precise extent of Britain‟s imperial power, the specifics of a state constitution and the absolute necessity of a federal one, all expressed this urge for a careful articulation as proof that the right relationship with external powers did indeed prevail.95. In this respect she resembled one of her favourite contemporaries, Mary Brunton, who would rather have “ glided through the world unknown” than been suspected of literary airs—to be shunned, as literary women are, by the more pretending of their own sex, and abhorred, as literary women are, by the more pretending of the other!89. In the Warren Court era, voters asked the Court to pass on issues concerning the size and shape of electoral districts, partly out of desperation because no other branch of government offered relief, and partly out of hope that the Court would reexamine old decisions in this area as it had in others, looking at basic constitutional principles in the light of modern living conditions.78. Some even argue plausibly that this weakness may be irremediable : in any society that, like a capitalist society, seeks to become ever wealthier in material terms disproportionate rewards are bound to flow to the people who are instrumental in producing the increase in its wealth.79. This doctrine has broadened the application of the Fourteenth Amendment to other, nonracial forms of discrimination, for while some justices have refused to find any legislative classification other than race to be constitutionally disfavored, most have been receptive to arguments that at least some nonracial discriminations, sexual discrimination in particular, are “suspect” and deserve this heightened scrutiny by the courts.80. But as cameras become more sophisticated, more automated, some photographers are tempted to disarm themselves or to suggest that they are not really armed, preferring to submit themselves to the limits imposed by premodern camera technology because a cruder, less high-powered machine is thought to give more interesting or emotive results, to have more room for creative accident. (15)71. While a selection of necessary details is involved in both, the officer must remain neutral and clearly try to present a picture of the facts, while the artist usually begins with a preconceived message or attitude which is then transmitted through the use of carefully selected details of action described in words intended to provoke associations and emotional reactions in the reader.53. The result of attrition is that, where the areas of the whole leaves follow a normal distribution, a bimodal distribution is produced, one peak composed mainly of fragmented pieces, the other of the larger remains.48. The Bible does not tell us how the Roman census takers made out, and as regards our more immediate concern, the reliability of present day economic forecasting, there are considerable difference of opinion.49. A survey conducted in Britain confirmed that an abnormally high percentage of patients suffering from arthritis of the spine who had been treated with X rays contracted cancer.50. Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. (9)41. His thesis works relatively well when applied to discrimination against Blacks in the United States, but his definition of racial prejudice as “ racially-based negative prejudgments against a group generally accepted as a race in any given region of ethnic competition,” can be interpreted as also including hostility toward such ethnic groups as the Chinese in California and the Jews in medieval Europe.42. Gutman argues convincingly that the stability of the Black family encouraged the transmission of and so was crucial in sustaining — the Black heritage of folklore, music, and religious expression from one generation to another, a heritage that slaves were continually fashioning out of their African and American experiences.43. Even the folk knowledge in social systems on which ordinary life is based in earning, spending, organizing, marrying, taking part in political activities, fighting and so on , is not very dissimilar from the more sophisticated images of the social system derived from the social sciences, even though it is built upon the very imperfect samples of personal experience.44. A Novel Single-Stage Constant-WattageHigh-Power-Factor Electronic BallastJ.Marcos Alonso,Member,IEEE,Antonio J.Calleja,Associate Member,IEEE,Emilio L´o pez,Member,IEEE, Javier Ribas,Student Member,IEEE,and Manuel Rico-Secades,Member,IEEEAbstract—A novel single-stage high-power-factor electronicballast is presented in this paper. The ballast is obtained from the integration of a buck–boost converter and a half-bridge LC resonant inverter. The ballast features lamp power regulation against line voltagefluctuations together with high power factor and dimming capability. The steady-state analysis of the ballast is performed and a low-frequency model of the input stage is derived.A design example, including closed-loop circuitry,is also presented. Finally, some experimental results from a laboratory prototype are shown.Index Terms—Constant-wattage feature, fluorescent lamps, high-frequency operation,power-factor correction,single-stage ballast.I.I NTRODUCTIOND ISCHARGE lamps are a source of light in which light isproduced by the radiant energy generated from a gas discharge. Most gas discharge lamps must be operated in series with a current-limiting device. This auxiliary, commonly called ballast, limits the current to the value for which each lamp is designed. It also provides the required starting and operating voltages.Fig.1shows two traditional ballasts used to supply dis-charge lamps. The simplest ballast is shown in Fig.1(a);it consists of an electromagnetic inductance placed in series with the lamp. The only function of this ballast is to limit the current delivered to the lamp.Normally,a capacitor is placed across the line input,in order to both increase the input power factor and decrease the input current under starting and operating conditions.Although this resulting ballast is economical and small,it presents the main shortcoming of little regulation forfluctuations in line voltage. For example,a5%change in line voltage would cause a10%change in lamp wattage [1].Therefore,this ballast is not recommended where line fluctuations exceed5%.Fig.1(b)shows the so-called constant-wattage autotrans-former(CWA).This ballast consists of a high-reactance au-totransformer with a capacitor in series with the e of the capacitor allows the lamp to operate with better wattage stability when the line voltagefluctuates. For example,a5% change in line voltage would result in only a2%change in lamp wattage. This ballast is used when the line voltage is expected to vary more than5%[1].Manuscript received July11,1998;revised April16,1999.Abstract published on the Internet August20,1999.The authors are with DIEECS—Tecnolog´ıa Electr´o nica,Universidad de Oviedo,33204Gij´o n,Spain(e-mail:marcos@ate.uniovi.es).Publisher Item Identifier S0278-0046(99)08480-4.(a)(b)Fig.1.Traditional ballasts for discharge lamps.(a)Inductive ballast.(b)CWA.Although electromagnetic ballasts present great simplicityand low cost, they have to operate at line frequency, thusshowing high volume and weight,as well as low efficiency.Therefore,high-frequency(HF)electronic ballasts are beingused nowadays to supply discharge pared withtraditional electromagnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts canprovide higher efficiency, output power control(dimming),high-quality lighting, longer lamp life, and lower volume[1],[10].The introduction of recent regulations for harmonic currentemissions from electronic equipment connected to the mains, such as IEC-1000-3-2[2],has imposed a new requirementto electronic ballast. It is necessary to implement electronicballast with high power factor,typically,over0.9,and withlow total harmonic distortion,typically,below30%.Theprecise limits for each harmonic can be obtained from[2].With the harmonic content requirements introduced by theregulations, the typical passive solutions to improve the inputpower factor can hardly be employed. This makes necessarythe use of active solutions and, consequently,an importantincrease in the ballast cost results.Fig.2(a)shows a typicalelectronic solution to obtain a high-input power factor by usingan upstream power-factor-correction(PFC)stage and an HFinverter. The PFC stage generates a dc voltage level at theinput of the HF inverter, assuring a high-input power factor. 0278–0046/99$10.00©1999IEEE(a)(b)Fig.2.High-power-factor electronic ballasts.(a)Two-stage ballast.(b) Low-cost single-stage ballast. This stage also regulates the dc-bus voltage against line voltage fluctuations, thus providing constant-wattage operation,as in the CWA ballast. In spite of its good features, this arrangement presents a high cost, due to the two-stage configuration, which makes it necessary to duplicate both components and control circuitry.Cost is one of the main drawbacks of electronic ballasts when compared with electromagnetic ballasts. Therefore,it is very important to reduce the overall cost of electronic ballasts to make them competitive.Fig.2(b)shows a single-stage electronic ballast, where both PFC stage and HF inverter have been integrated in a single-stage ballast. This new technique of integrating several power stages into a single stage is pro-voking a great deal of interest,in particular,in implementing low-and medium-power ballasts[3]–[7].In this paper,a new single-stage high-power-factor elec-tronic ballast is presented. The ballast is obtained from the integration of the buck–boost converter and the half-bridge inverter. The operation of the buck–boost converter in dis-continuous conduction mode(DCM)provides unity power factor with both constant frequency and duty cycle. The buck–boost topology in DCM assures high power factor,main-taining relatively low voltage stress across the switches when compared with the boost PFC topology. Also, using a very simple control circuit, the output voltage of the buck–boost converter can be regulated against line voltagefluctuations, thus providing constant wattage in the lamp. The resulting topology is a low-cost single-stage constant-wattage high-power-factor electronic ballast. The results from a laboratory prototype supplied from a wide input voltage range(180–260 V(a)(b)Fig.3.Derivation of the single-stage ballast.(a)Two-stage configuration.(b)Proposed single-stageballast.Fig.4.Equivalent circuits of the proposed ballast during one cycle of operation. As can be seen in Fig.5,the buck–boost semistage is op-erated in DCM in order to provide an average input current proportional to the sinusoidal input voltage, thus achieving high-input power factor. The half-bridge semistage is operated at a switching frequency above the resonant frequency, thusthe resonant currentis lagged and zero-voltage-switching (ZVS)is provided for the turn-on of transistor Q1,whereas transistor Q2is turned on with zero current,as can be seen inFig.5.V oltage and current waveforms of the proposed ballast.Fig.5.Also,Fig.5shows how the duty cycle of transistor Q2can be modified by adjusting its turn-on instantwithin the timeintervaland 0.5.If the converter is operatedwith a duty cycle below this minimum value,a new operating mode appears and thevoltage(1).Mode III:Q1OFF ,Q2ON,.For both modes, equations are thefollowing:(4).Mode V:Q1ON ,Q2OFF,.For both modes, equations are thefollowing:(7)(10)is the duty cycle of transistor Q2,100%efficiency for the buck–boost semistage, the steady-statevoltageand(21)per-unit inductorcurrent(22)inductor currentphaseare the normalized frequency and load,respec-tively.The following base values have beenused:(24)In order to determine the operating point of the buck–boostsemistage, the inverter input resistance must be obtained.Thisresistance can be calculated asfollows:andincreasesand. For the buck–boost semistage,it is also important to deter-mine the duty-cycle range of operation, which,in turn, definesthe admissible variation of the inputvoltageto0.5,allowing the regulation of the output voltage. The nominalduty cycle must be selected between the minimum value and0.5.The selection of the nominal duty cycle provides also therange of regulation above and below the nominal point.Sincethe bulk capacitor voltage is proportional to the duty cycle, the total regulation range is givenbyandfor the higher values ofthe normalized switchingfrequency. In the previous analysis,a complete study of the ballast op-eration has been performed, and results are given by(21)–(29).At closed-loop operation,voltage(a)(b)Fig.6.(a)Normalized input resistance of the half-bridge semistage.(b) Minimum duty cycle of the buck–boost semistage.and the minimum duty cycle for each dimming level can be obtained.IV.L OW-F REQUENCY M ODELThe low-frequency model of the proposed ballast is shown in Fig.7.The input of the buck–boost semistage is modeled as a lossfreeresistor(30)The input power is transferred to the output by the currentsource. Then, the instantaneous value of the outputcurrent source willbe(32)Fig.7.Low-frequency model of the buck–boostsemistage.being the dc value in the followingexpression:(38)withFollowing the same procedure, the transfer function between the output voltage and the instantaneous line peak voltage can be obtained from(34)(40)with/50Hz,and afluorescent lamp PLC-26W fromPhilips is used. The lamp is tested at HF(around25kHz)andthe following data aremeasured:)is0.375;with this value, the minimum busvoltageVmHwill be obtained for the highvalues of the input voltages. The study of the ballast operatingwith duty cycle lower than the minimum value in order toincrease the regulation range represents an interesting subjectfor future work.Regarding the buck–boost semistage, the design includesthe reactiveelementsmHparameter iscalculated asfollows:).Below this value, the CCM operation mode begins toappear and the input power factor begins to decrease.Thecapacitance(53)(a)(b) Fig.8.(a)Electric diagram of the implemented power stage has been implemented following the elec-tric diagram of Fig.3(b).Transistors Q1and Q 2are MOSFET IRF840and all diodes, including the main rectifier, are BA157.The cores usedforare E25/N27and dc blockingcapacitanceand 24W.Themeasured efficiency was around 85%.Finally,Fig.12illustrates the time response of the out-put voltage at closed-loop operation for a step-up and step-down transient in the peak line voltage. An HP-6812power source/analyzer programmed with a 500-V/s slew rate was used.As can be seen, the time constant is quite low, about 500ms,as expected for this kind of converter. However, the response of the lamp luminous flux is still slower and no variation is observed during the line voltagetransients.Fig.12.Response of voltage V O at closed-loop operation for a step-up and step-down of peak line voltage V g (50V/div,500ms/div).VII.C ONCLUSIONA new single-stage high-power-factor electronic ballast has been presented in this paper. The ballast is generated from the integration of a buck–boost converter and a half-bridge LC resonant inverter. The buck–boost converter is used to provide unity power factor and the resonant inverter ignites and supplies the lamp at the nominal operating point. The steady-state analysis of the ballast has been presented and a low-frequency model of the input stage is ing the results of the performed analysis,a design procedure for a 24-W fluorescent lamp is performed. Some experimental results from a laboratory prototype are presented. The ballast features lamp power regulation against line voltage fluctuations together with high power factor and dimming capability. The dimming feature can be implemented in two ways.A first solution would be the use of the duty cycle as control variable in order to change the lamp power;this will probably provide a very small dimming range and also disturb the lamp power regulation against line voltage variations. The second solution would be the use of the switching frequency as control variable;in this case, the different duty-cycle ranges at each dimming level should be calculated using (29)in order to maintain the line regulation.R EFERENCES[1]IES Lighting Handbook
