AI took the bus to work for many years. No one knew each other; the passengers all sat there sleepily in the morning. The bus was cheerless and silent. One of the passengers was a small gray-haired man who took the bus to the center for senior citizens every morning. No one ever paid very much attention to him.One July morning he said good morning to the driver and smiled. The driver nodded guardedly(戒备地). The rest of us were silent. The next day, the old man boarded with a big smile and said in a loud voice: “A very good morning to you all!” Some of us looked up, amazed, and murmured “Good Morning” in reply. The following weeks, our friend was dressed in a nice old suit and tie. His thin hair had been carefully combed. He said good morning to us every day and we gradually began to nod and talk to each other. One morning he even had a bunch of wild flowers in his hand. The driver turned around smiling and asked: “Have you got yourself a girlfriend, Charlie?” We never got to know if his name really was “Charlie”, but he nodded shyly and said yes. The other passengers whistled and clapped at him. Charlie waved the flowers before he sat down on his seat.Every morning after that Charlie always brought flowers. Some passengers also brought flowers for him. The bus became a happy place. Then, one morning, as autumn was closing in, Charlie wasn’t waiting at his usual stop. When he wasn’t there the next day and the day after that, we started wondering if he was sick or—hopefully – on holiday somewhere. When we came nearer to the center for senior citizens, one of the passengers asked the driver to wait. We all held our breaths when he went to the door. The old gentle man was fine, but one of his close friends had died over the weekend. How silent we were the rest of the way to work. The next Monday Charlie was waiting at the stop, stooping (弯腰) a bit more, a little bit more gray, and without a tie. Inside the bus was silent. Even though no one had talked about it, all of us sat there silently, our eyes filled with tears and a bunch of wild flowers in our hands.1. Apple has clever ly taken advantage of the power of the letter “i” –-- and many other brands are following suit. The BBC’s iPlayer --- which allows Web users to watch TV programs on the Internet ---used the title in 2008. A lovely bear --- popular in the US and UK --- that plays music and video is called “iTeddy”. A slimmed-down version(简装本) of London’s Independent newspaper was started last week under the name “i”.In general, single-letter prefixes(前缀) have been popular since the 1990s, when terms such as e-mail and e-commerce(电子商务) first came into use. Most “i” products are targeted at (针对)young people and considering the major readers of Independent’s “i”, it’s no surprise that they’ve selected this fashionable name. But it’s hard to see what’s so special about the letter “i”. Why not use “a”, “b”, or “c” instead? According to Tony Thorne, head of the Language Center at King’s College, London, “i” works because its meaning has become ambiguous. When Apple uses “i”, no one knows whether it means Internet, information, indi vidual or interactive, Thorne told BBC Magazines. “Even when Apple created the iPod, it seems it didn’t have one clear definition(定义),” he says.“However, thanks to Apple, the term is now connected with portability (轻便) .”adds Thorne.Clearly the letter “i” also agrees with the idea that the Western World is centered on the individual. Each person believes they have their own needs, and we love personalized products for this reason.Along with “Google” and “blog”, readers of BBC Magazines voted “i” as one o f the top 20 words that have come to define the last decade(十年).But as history shows, people grow tired of fads. From the 1900s to 1990s, products with “2000” in their names became fashionable as the year was connected with all things advanced and modern. However, as we entered the new century, the fashion disappeared.8. People use iPlayer to __________.A. listen to musicB. make a callC. watch TV programs onlineD. read newspapers9. We can infer that the Independent’s “i” is designed for _________.A. young readersB. old readersC. fashionable womenD. engineers10. The underlined word “ambiguous” means “__________”.A. popularB. uncertainC. clearD. unique11. Nowadays, the “i” term often reminds people of the products which are __________.A. portableB. environmentally friendlyC. advancedD. recyclable12. The writer suggests that __________.A. “i” products are often of high qualityB. iTeddy is alive bearC. the letter “b” replaces letter “i” to name the productsD. the popularity of “i” products may not last long第二节(共5小题,每小题1.5分,满分7.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

It is also the color of most growing plants.Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that is not yet ripe(成熟的) or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a situation. In the 15th century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns(角) had not yet developed. A century or so later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle. By the 18th century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today --- a person who is new in a job.About 100 years ago, greenhorn was a popular expression in the American west. Old-timers used it to describe a man who had just arrived from one of the big cities back east. The greenhorn lacked the skills he would need to live in the west.Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb. The expression comes from the early 1900s. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden continues to grow long after your plants have died.Green is also the color used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy(嫉妒). The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play "Othello."It describes the unpleasant feeling that a person has when someone has something that he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going outwith someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay raise and she does not.In most places in the world, a green light is a signal to move ahead. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. It covers an area of 22,500m2, about the same size as three football fields, and the temperature is a constant -1℃to -2℃. However, the strangest thing about this place is that it’s in the middle of the desert! It’s called Ski Dubai and the outside temperature s can rise to more than 40℃!It sounds crazy, but it just shows how serious people are about having fun. We spend huge sums on sports facilities. We pay our sports stars ridiculous amounts of money. And we spend hour after hour playing games! I wonder if all the sports - lovers and game - players in the world aren’t a little crazy. I know I am. I was once drivin g past a football field where some kids were playing. I turned to watch and crashed my car. I know it’s stupid but I can do nothing about it. As someone said, “Football isn’t a matter of life and death. It’s much more important than that!”Of course, it i sn’t that important really. No game is. But the problem is that games are addictive. From the tennis court to the golf course, you’ll find participants and spectators who can’t live without the drug of their choice. It could be a good thing. After all, despite being addictive, it’s true that sports and games help us to relax. Maybe if it wasn’t for sport, our societies would be more violent. Perhaps sport is a substitute for war? It’s hard to think of a quieter, more peaceful game than chess, and what’s the objective? Capturing your opponent’s king, and surely, it’s better to have wars in athletics stadiums rather than on battlefields. What’s more, playing is natural. Kittens chase balls of wool and puppies pretend to fight. Games help us perfect ours kills and prepare us for the serious contest of survival. But do all games help us relax and stay away from violence? What about computer games? A recent article in New Scientist suggest s that playing violent video games (and most of them are extremely violent) makes people more aggressive and more likely to commit violent crimes. Are these games a rehearsal for life or a substitute for life? Do we play instead of facing up to our real problems? I don’t know. But what I do know is that I need a break, something to help me relax. Skiing would be nice. I wonder how much it costs to get to Dubai?82. According to the author, the most surprising thing about Ski Dubai is its _____.A. slopesB. sizeC. locationD. facilities83. The expression “the drug of their choice” in the 3rd paragraph refers to _____.A. the game they are keen onB. the medicine they takeC. the activity good for healthD. the sport in place of war84. Which of the following statements does the author most probably agree with?A. Sports stars should be paid more to play well.B. Sports are more important than life and death.C. Chess is too peaceful to be considered a sport.D. Games can make one relaxed as well as violent.85. What does the author mainly talk about in the passage ?A. The relationship between games and crimes .B. Human natural craze for having fun with games.C. Serious concerns about time that is spent on games.D. Real problems facing game players in everyday life.(B)Across the rich world, well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less-skilled. Some 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with only a high-school certificate. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well-education well off and the unskilled poor. Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individual and society, are profound. The world is facing as astonishing rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity (长寿)translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems. But the notion of a sharp division between the working young and the idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Employment rates are falling among younger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers are putting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have dropped out of the workforce. That even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding generation. Technological change may well reinforce that shift: the skills that complement computers, from management knowhow to creativity. Do not necessarily decline with age.86、what is happening in the workforce in rich countries?A. younger people are replacing the elderlyB. well-educated people tend to work longerC. unemployment rates are rising year after yearD. people with no college degree do not easily find work87、what do many observers predict in view of the experience of the 20th century?A. Economic growth will slow down.B. Government budgets will increase.C. More people will try to pursue higher educationD. There will be more competition in the job market.88、What is the result of policy changes in European countries?A. Unskilled workers may choose to retire early.B. more people have to receive in-service training.C. Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.D. People may be able to enjoy generous defined-benefits from pension plans.89、What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?A. Computers will do more complicated work.B. More will be taken by the educated young.C. Most jobs to be done will be creative ones.D. Skills are highly valued regardless of age.(C)At the heart of the debate over illegal immigration lies one key question: are immigrants good or bad for the economy? The American public overwhelmingly thinks they're bad. Yet the consensus among most economists is that immigration, both legal and illegal, provides a small net boost to the economy. Immigrants provide cheap labor, lower the prices of everything from farmproduce to new homes, and leave consumers with a little more money in their pockets. So why is there such a discrepancy between the perception of immigrants' impact on the economy and the reality? There are a number of familiar theories. Some argue that people are anxious and feel threatened by an inflow of new workers. Others highlight the strain that undocumented immigrants place on public services, like schools, hospitals, and jails. Still others emphasize the role of race, arguing that foreigners add to the nation's fears and insecurities. There's some truth to all these explanations, but they aren't quite sufficient. To get a better understanding of what's going on, consider the way immigration's impact is felt. Though its overall effect may be positive, its costs and benefits are distributed unevenly. David Card, an economist at UC Berkeley, notes that the ones who profit most directly from immigrants' low-cost labor are businesses and employers – meatpacking plants in Nebraska, for instance, or agricultural businesses in California. Granted, these producers' savings probably translate into lower prices at the grocery store, but how many consumers make that mental connection at the checkout counter? As for the drawbacks of illegal immigration, these, too, are concentrated. Native low-skilled workers suffer most from the competition of foreign labor. According to a study by George Borjas, a Harvard economist, immigration reduced the wages of Americanhigh-school dropouts by 9% between 1980-2000.Among high-skilled, better-educated employees, however, opposition was strongest in states with both high numbers of immigrants and relatively generous social services. What worried them most, in other words, was the fiscal (财政的)burden of immigration. That conclusion was reinforced by another finding: that their opposition appeared to soften when that fiscal burden decreased, as occurred with welfare reform in the 1990s, which curbed immigrants' access to certain benefits. The irony is that for all the overexcited debate, the net effect of immigration is minimal. Even for those most acutely affected – say, low-skilled workers, or California residents – the impactisn't all that dramatic. "The unpleasant voices have tended to dominate our perceptions," says Daniel Tichenor, a political science professor at the University of Oregon. "But when all those factors are put together and the economists calculate the numbers, it ends up being a net positive, but a small one." Too bad most people don't realize it.90. In the passage there are four sentences missing. Choose the best one from the six sentences.ForgivenessTo forgive is a virtue, but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.____1____ Try the following steps:Calm yourself. ____2____ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.Don't wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. They may have wanted to hurt you or they just don't see things the same way. If you wait for people to apologize, you could be waiting an awfully long time. Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upset you.Take the control away from your offender(冒犯者). Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you.____4____ If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear, and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender's point of view.Don't forget to forgive yourself. ____5____ But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don't do it.A. Why should you forgive?B. How should you start to forgive?C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.D. Try to see things from your offender's angle.E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.Section DBased on the following passage and write a summaryFinancial setbacks in the form of pay cuts are having a trickle-down effect(涓滴效应) as the depression persists. Families across America are cutting or even axing kids’ allowance (零用钱) to reflect what’s going on with household finances and the economy as a whole .Some jobless parents are doing it out of necessity .Other parents are using allowance adjustments to teach children about economic realities and how to budget in leaner times.“Try to use relevant news to explain the reasons behind the depression and how it’s hitting home. If they see it obvious in their own allowance, they’ll feel the impact and see how it all ties in,”says financial consultant Antwone Harris.Any reduction in allowance should be understood in age-appropriate communication, says Dr. Tony Meyer, a child psychiatrist(精神科医生) and medical director of Aurora Psychiatric Hospital. Six to 12-year-olds are mature enough for a frank talk, but don’t set them back with a lot of details. It’s sufficient to say their allowance is lower because Mom and Dad is getting paid less at work ,so there’s less money for the family to spend. With 12 to 18-year-olds, you can broaden the discussion to include the banking crisis and other factors that contributed to the depression, Meyer says. Younger kids have the idea that they’re at the center of things, and adolescents by nature are especially self-concerned . “They’ll think they’re responsible, ”Meyer says.A cut in allowance might seem punishing, so the message that the child is not at fault needs to come across. Depending on the child’s age, “You can also ask them to bring some income by working a job or helping more around the house so Mom or Dad can work more,” he says. Kids。

Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows or broken roofs. One person was killed, several were badly hurt and taken to hospital, and a number of other people received smaller hurt. Altogether over two hundred people were homeless after the storm.A farmer,Mr. Tan,said that the storm began early in the morning and lasted for over an hour.“I was eating with my wife and children,”he said,“When we heard a loud noise. A few minutes later our house fell down on top of us. We tried our best to climb out but then I saw that one of my children was missing. I went back inside and found him, safe but very frightened.”Mrs. Woo Mei Fong said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children.“There was no time to take anything,”she said,“A few minutes later,t he roof came down.”Soldiers helped to take people out of the flooded area and the welfare department (福利机构)brought them food, clothes and shelter.21. Which of he following may be the best title for this passage?A. Clever PeopleB. A Lucky WomanC. Good SoldiersD. A Terrible StormBFrom July to October every year, ab out a quarter of the world’s blue whales feed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. But the whales now face a major threat in their favorite feeding area. Lots of ships carrying cargo sail in the same area at the same time. All too often, a ship will hit a whale.According to a new study, this problem has become a serious threat to the whole population of the world’s blue whales. There are only about 10,000 of the creatures in the world.Blue whales are the largest known animals ever to live on Earth. But if hit by a container(集装箱) ship, a blue whale will likely die from its injuries. In 2007 alone, large ships killed five blue whales in the waters off San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says that because there are so few whales already, losing three to five from the California whale population every year is a great loss.“The population of blue whales in this part of the Pacific is about 2,500,” says Sean Hastings, a member of NOAA. “So every whale counts toward this population moving off the endangered-species list.”Now, one very simple program is already under way in the Santa Barbara Channel, a waterway that separates mainland California from the nearby Channel Islands. The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary has asked large container ships passing through the area to slow down. Sailing slower will allow the ship’s members more time to look at detection(探测) equipment and – more important – to change course before hitting a whale.Several of the world’s largest shipping lines are set to take part in the new program. For every ship that passes through the Santa Barbara Channel at or below the reduced speed of 12 knots(a measure of speed in water), the company that owns the ship will be paid $2,500.25.The underlined part “this problem” in Paragraph 2 refers to the fact that .A.whales are hit by ships B.whales lose their wayC.whales travel too far D.whales can’t find enough food26.What can we learn about blue whales?A.They like following container ships. B.They mainly live in the pacific Ocean.C.They are in danger of disappearing. D.They were once large in number.27.The purpose of the simple program mentioned in Paragraph 6 is to .A.ship the whales B.guide the whalesC.look for the whales D.protect the whales28.The text is most probably .A.a travel guide B.a newspaper reportC.an advertisement D.a research paperCMany years ago my student asked me the question, "Mrs. Kindred, why do you teach?" Without taking time to reflect, I answered, "Because someday I might say something that might make a difference in someone's life." Even though I was sincere, that wasn't a very good answer and my student didn't let it slide."Let me get this straight," he said, "You went to college for four years so you could come here every day because you have the hope that someday you might say something that will influence someone?" He shook his head as if I were crazy and walked away looking confused. I'm one of those people who look back and wish they had said something smart or witty, or swift.Even though that particular student might no longer wonder why I teach, there are days when I wonder. On those days, I remind myself of the real reasons I teach: It's in my blood. My mother was my most influential teacher, and she was a 6th grade reading teacher until her death in 1990. She instilled(逐渐灌输) in me a love of reading and the knowledge that education opens doors.Teaching is a way to make a difference. If you throw a stone in a pond the ripples go on and on until they reach the shore. You can't have ripples without a "stone." Good teachers throw stones that make a positive difference, and that's what I strive to do.I genuinely love teenagers.I want to share with others what I know and what I have learned through the years. Life is full of ups and downs, and if I can help students avoid some potholes on the road of life, I want to do so. If they'll allow me to celebrate their victories with them, I want to do too.Teaching isn't for everyone, but I know I made the right career choice.29. Why did the student continue to ask the question about the writer’s being a teacher?A. Because the writer was insincere.B. Because he thought her answer was unbelievable.C. Because the student was naughty.D. Because the answer was difficult to understand.30. What do you think of the writer?A. Honest.B. Stupid.C. Conservative.D. Polite.31. According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?A. The writ er’s mother has the greatest influence on her.B. The writer’s answer made the student confused.C. In the writer’s opinion, some people in the world are unfit to teach.D. The writer annoyed the student who asked the question.32. What’s the main idea of the text?A. A student’s silly question.B. A good teacher who likes students.C. The reason why I teach.D. A confused student.DThis is a song millions of Americans will hear this New Year's Eve. It is called Auld Lang Syne (《友谊地久天长》). He sat and talked with me about his career goals and the difficulty of being at w ork on nights, weekends and holidays. He said he hadn’t enough time to be with his family. After 15 minutes, he saw some customers at the front desk and excused himself. Before I left that night, some other waiters, even the cook, had come out of the kitchen and sat with me!When I asked for my bill about one hour later, all the people who had sat down with me came over in a big group to my table, and presented me with a red rose. Here are some ways to master it.Recite and repeat in conversation. When you hear a person’s name, repeat it. Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.Ask the other person to recite and repeat. You can let other people help you remember thei r names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.Admit you don’t know.Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy (同情) if you say, “I’m working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”Use association (联系).Connect each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note: “Vicki Cheng -- tall, black hair.” To strengthen your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible. Limit the number of new names you learn at one time. When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or threenames. Free yourself from remembering every one. Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names. Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names. Last names can come later.Go early.Consider going early to meetings, parties and classes. Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That’s fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others — a review for you.29. How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?A. They will be moved.B. They will be annoyed.C. They will be delighted.D. They will be discouraged.30. If you can’t remember someone’s name, you may ______.A. tell him the truthB. tell him a white lieC. ask him for pityD. ask others to help you31. When you meet a group of people, it is better to remember ______.A. all their namesB. a couple of names firstC. just their last namesD. as many names as possible32. What does the text mainly tell us?A. Tips on an important social skill.B. Importance of attending parties.C. How to make use of associations.D. How to recite and repeat names.DSome people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks (平装本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全书), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbooks, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.33. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.A. TV programs are a chief provider of knowledgeB. cinemas are the best choice in getting informationC. reading is a cheap way of learning and having funD. newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself34. What does the underlined sentence in the secon d paragraph “Television has notkilled reading, however.” suggest?A. People only need reading, though.B. Reading is more fun than television.C. Reading is still necessary today.D. Watching television doesn’t help reading.35. Where can you probably see this passage?A. In a travel booklet.B. In a science report.C. In a fashion show magazine.D.
