I believe you can do your best. Not being the best but touching the limits of what you're capable of. I gained this belief from my third grade teacher, the most special, hono-red, trustworthy, and loved person in my life.
Mr Myrus was always perfectly dressed and spoke with the belief that talking to eight year-olds didn't mean that he had to sacrifice proper statements or grammars. And he was demanding, but he wasn't unreasonable or cruel. He simply felt that no matter what your best was, you should achieve it.
As luck would have it, I met him again as my eighth grade math teacher. I was not, nor ever will be, gifted in math I remember my
struggles in class "I don't know the answer," I would say, "I can't do it! " "Perhaps you don't know the answer," he would say quietly. "Do you think we might figure it out together? How do you know what you can do until you try?"
Mr Myrus lived around the corner, and I would often stop by to talk while he worked in his garden I knew there was someone who let me know that if I had really tried, that was enough "Don't be so hard on yourself," he'd say. "Stop blaming yourself. Did you try your best? Well, then you re not a failure, " he often told me these words.
Mr Myrus died in 1978. I had never thought about his death. He was too young. I felt sorry. But when I think about him now, I don't feel so sorry. He taught me to be kind, not only to others, but to myself. He taught me my own value. He taught me about honor, about truth, and about doing my best-and that all feelings and beliefs have dignity and deserve respect. And of all the things I know, this I believe: We can't all be "the best", but we can, each of us, be our best, and I know that's true because Mr Myrus told me that.
24. What can we know about Mr Myrus according to the passage?
A. He is a person who isn't particular about what he wears.

C
Home schooling nowadays becomes more and more popular. Home schooling is the
education of children taught at home, typically by parents but sometimes by tutors, rather than in a formal setting of public or private school. The advantages of home schooling are plentiful, including the ability to create a positive learning environment without the dangers and distractions of public school. What's more, parents could stay with their children together for more time. In addition to the advantages, home schooling also has disadvantages.
First, home schooling may lead to students' less commurucation with others. As we all know, the students who learn in public schools may find a lot of friends. When they meet difficulties, they can get help from others. But as for the students study at home, the only persons they meet are their parents or tutors. It is certainly true that the children will have less interaction with their peers than those who attend public school on a regular basis.
Second, home schooling may make children do not know how to cooperate with
others. Children who learn at home always stay with their parents c)r tutors. When they meet difficulties, they are always turning to and depending on their parents. But the children in public schools may know how to solve the problems with their friends.
What's more , home schooling may cost much more money than public schools. If theparents want to take on the responsibility of educating
their children themselves , it's up to them to finance the entire experience. Learning materials, computer software and books that are otherwise paid for by the public school are needed ,in addition to the regular school supplies all parents must purchase for their children. Considering that the parent doing the home schooling is unlikely to manage a full-time job on the side ,these expenses are tough for some families to meet.
28. The benefit of home education is that
A. it creates a more lively learning environment
B. parents could educate their children and stay with them for more time

D. it has lower cost
29. What is the central argument of the passage?
A. The benefits of home schooling.
B. America's home schooling.
C. The disadvantages of home schooling.

30. In the style of home schooling, one will __________________
A. have less peer pressure
B. learn more knowledge than in public or private school
C. have few opportunities to take outdoor activities
D. have an easier way to make friends
31. What conclusion can we draw according to the last paragraph?
A. Home schooling is less effective.
B. Home schooling can get partly financial aid from government.
C. Home schooling expenses are too tough for all families to bear.
D. Home schooling can't freely enjoy so much teaching facilities as public school
does.

Canadian scientists found another reason for smokers to quit the bad habit. According to the new evidence, smokers are three times more likely to suffer strokes(中风) or mini strokes than non-smokers. Besides, smokers tend to have strokes almost ten years earlier when compared to those who quit smoking. The researchers analyzed more than 950 stroke patients who were each admitted to the hospital after having suffered a mini-stroke, a suspected mini-stroke or an actual stroke. Among these patients about 700 were smokers and just 250 did not smoke.
When the average age of stroke patients was calculated, smokers were around 58 years of age when they had a stroke, and the average age of non-smoking participants was 67 years. "It has been known that the more
you smoke, the more you stroke," said Dr. Andrew Pipe,a professor in the faculty of medicine at the University of Ottawa,"but this time our research adds a new message to it. "
However, researchers left the smokers some good news, stating that the risk of having a stroke is brought down to the same level as it is with non-smoking individuals within eighteen months to two years of giving up the habit. But, besides quitting smoking, smokers need to concentrate on reducing other risk factors for stroke which include high blood pres-sure, high blood fat, being extremely overweight or obese, high cholesterol(胆固醇) levels and sedentary(久做的)lifestyle.
The researchers addressed the government to maximally restrict access to agarettes in order to at least bring down the number of strokes, as well as creating better support for individuals who really desire to quit smoking. According to the experts, the findings of this study provide yet another important chunk of evidence about how vital it is to help smokers to kick the habit.
32. The passage is mainly written to
A. show how smoking harms people's health
B. introduce a new research on smoking habit
C. urge the government to ban the tobacco
D. persuade smokers to quit the habit of smoking
33. What does Dr. Pipe's words in Paragraph 2 really mean?
A. The more you smoke, the more you will suffer a stroke.
B. The more you smoke, the younger you will suffer a stroke.
C. The sooner you quit smoking, the better you are.
D. The later you quit smoking, the worse you are.
34. Which of the following might contribute to a stroke?
