Some little boys are addicted to Legos. Others can’t get enough of dinosaurs. But it is Blackpool Tower in England that has captured one 6-year-old’s imagination.
The Blackpool Tower was built in 1894. It is twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty in NYC. Now Charlie Barratt has achieved his dream by becoming the voice of the attraction’s lift(电梯). Charlie did a project about the tower at school, recording his own version of the lift’s existing speech. In the voice-over, Charlie welcomes visitors to the attraction. He also offers interesting facts about the tower. One of his teachers contacted Kenny Mew, the tower’s operation manager, and told him about Charlie’s love for the 518-foot(157 meter)structure.
Mew told BBC Radio Lancashire, “His school reached out to me and said they had this young boy who was passionate about Blackpool Tower and had actually recorded the lift speech and I was thinking to myself: how’s he done that? I played it back and he had the speech word for word that we’d had recorded already in the lift and it just sounded amazing. And we thought we were going to give Charlie the opportunity to do lit. He was absolutely brilliant. He’s done an amazing job, and we’re really proud of what he’s done.”
Charlie was then invited into a professional recording studio to perform his version and his mum, Wendy, is as thrilled as he is. She told the BBC, “He adores the tower.” Wendy first took Charlie to visit the tower when he was a baby. She said he loved it “from the minute he can walk”.
Now Charlie is the voice of the attraction’s lift. As well as the lift, there are plans in progress for Charlie to
lend his voice to other areas in the future.
24. Why does the author mention other boys in the first paragraph?
A. To imply that Blackpool Tower is better than Legos and dinosaurs.
B. To highlight that Charlie Barratt has a unique passion.
C. To indicate that Charlie Barratt cannot get along with other boys.
D. To criticize other boys who fail to achieve their dreams.
25. What can we know about Blackpool Tower?

B. Its manager attempted to find a boy to record lift speech.
C. It is now using Charlie’s remade recording in its lit.
D. It is the highest tower in England with interesting facts.

C. He had a strong interest in Blackpool Tower.
D. He decided to attract more tourists to it.
27. Which words can better describe Charlie?
A. Passionate and unselfish.
B. Hard-working and persuasive.
C. Promising and kind.
D. Enthusiastic and committed.

The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children, concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck a chord with many young Chinese who are eager to take pause to breathe
in this fast-paced and highly-competitive society.
Many millennials(千禧一代)and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens , including work stress, family disputes and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “involution(内卷)” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis(宣泄)and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage(按揭)today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale(士气)far beyond their reach.
“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”
28. Which of the following can be described as a “lying down” lifestyle?
A. Following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice.
B. Living in a simple way and leaving the worries behind.
C. Bearing lots of hard work to improve one’s living conditions.
D. Standing up and facing the reality consistently.
29. What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young?
A. Improvements in living conditions.
B. Growing pressure from family and social life.
C. Increasing material possessions from families.
D. Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
30. What’s the scholar’s attitude toward the “lying down” group?
A. Understanding.
B. Intolerant.
C. Supportive.
D. Unclear.
31. What can be inferred about the young generation from the text?
A. They never really drop their responsibilities.
B. They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.
C. They find their dreams far beyond their reach.
D. They would rather escape than take challenges.
D
Digital reading appears to be destroying habits of “deep reading”. Astonishing numbers of people with years of schooling are in effect illiterate(文盲的). This month’s Ljubljana Manifesto(宣言)explains: “The digital field may promote more reading than ever in history, but it also offers many temptations to read in a superficial and scattered(零散的)manner—or even not to read at all. This increasingly endangers higher-level reading.”
That’s frightening, because “higher-level reading” has been essential to civilization. It enabled the enlightenment and an international increase in empathy. Without it, we would suffer a lot. As the Ljubljana Manifesto notes, “as much as one-third of Europeans struggle even with lower-level reading skills.” More than one-fifth of adults in the US “fall into the illiterate/functionally illiterate category”. Separately, post-pandemic reading scores for American 13-year-olds are the lowest in decades! And the Washington-based Center for Global Development recently estimated that literacy(读写能力)in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa among those with five years of schooling has decreased by 10% this past half century.
Experts in the Ljubljana Manifesto record the demerits of digital reading: “Recent studies of various kinds indicate a decline of critical and conscious reading, slow reading, non-strategic reading and long-form reading-” When you read a book on paper, you can be entirely inside the experience, absorb hundreds of pages of details thoroughly and begin to capture the world’s complexity. Online, says Maryanne Wolf of UCLA, we are “skimming, scanning, scrolling”. The medium is the message: doing deep reading on your phone is as hard as playing tennis with your phone. Recently, a bright 1l-year-old told me I was wasting time on books: he absorbed
more information faster from Wikipedia. He had a point. But digital readers also absorb more misinformation and seldom absorb fine perspectives.
In short, as professors from Northwestern University foresaw in 2005, we are returning to the days when only an elite(精英)“reading class” consumes long texts, which is worrying.
32. What can we learn about digital reading from paragraph 1?
A. Digital reading has solved the problem of illiteracy.
B. Digital reading has lessened the practice of deep reading.
C. Digital reading has made deep reading accessible to wider readers.
D. Digital reading has aroused a greater appreciation for deep reading.
33. What is the purpose of the figures used in paragraph 2?
A. To display the popularity of digital reading.
B. To highlight the advantages of deep reading.
C. To present the unfavorable situation of literacy.
D. To stress the illiterate’s lower-level reading skills.
34. What does the underlined word “demerits” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Effects.
B. Depths.
C. Features.
D. Drawbacks.
35. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Advantages of digital reading.
B. Benefits of higher-level reading.
C. Ways to encourage digital reading.
D. Measures to practice deep reading.

How to be more organized
You’re in danger of missing a deadline, your important files are never where you thought they were, and it’s a lottery(彩票)whether you’ll even have clean clothes to wear tomorrow! Sound familiar? You can lose a great deal of time to disorganization. The more you can live and work in an organized way, the sooner you’ll change your habits for the better. 36
Celebrate small wins. For example, if you complete three things on your to-do list, treat yourself to a cup of coffee, or allow yourself 10 minutes of free time.
Use one calendar. If you record some things on your desk planner, and others on your email calendar, it’s going to be hard to organize everything. 37 . If you do it digitally, you’ll find that the technology can pull everything together for you.
Schedule small tasks. If a task or project requires action beforehand (like sending out an agenda before a meeting), make sure that you schedule those into your day, too. 38
Get organized at home. Don’t just restrict your organized approach to work. 39 . Declutter(简化)where you live to make mornings easier. Plan your whole day carefully. And talk to the people you live with, so that they know how they can help.
40 Whether you’re prioritizing your professional tasks for the week, or mapping out your family commitments, think about how to make every second count. Try to delete low-value tasks where you can to make
time for what’s really important.
A. Put a high value on your time.
B. Strike a balance between your work and life.
C. Here are five everyday strategies worth trying.
D. A chaotic home life will bring its own problems.
E. Instead, you should start putting it all in one place.
F. Missing small jobs can have big knock-on effects on everything else.
G. For some people, a paper notebook is still the best way to stay in control of plans.

第四部分读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In my community, there is a little boy who suffered from congenital muscle disease. He always considered himself the most unfortunate person in the world. Although he looked no different from ordinary people, it’s difficult for him to do some delicate movements. He often lost control of his hands and dropped things on the ground. Even after a short run, he would easily get out of breath. Depression and inferiority made him almost always alone. All of these make his mother very worried.
Then one spring, the boy’s mother bought some saplings(树苗)from a nearby market. She intended to plant them in the forecourt. She told her children to plant a sapling each person. The mother said to her three children, “Whose seedling grows best, I will buy him or her a favorite gift.” The boy also wanted to get his mother’s gift. But seeing his brothers and sisters carrying water to water the trees happily, anyhow, an idea hit him: he hoped the tree he planted would die soon. So watering it once or twice, he never attended to it.
Several days later, when the little boy went to see his tree again, he was surprised to find it grew some fresh leaves instead of withering(枯萎), and compared with the trees of his brother and sister, his appeared greener and more vital. He wondered what on earth had happened. As expected, his mother kept her promise, bought the little boy his favorite gift and said to him, “From the tree you plant, you will become an outstanding botanist(植物学家)when you grow up.”
Since then, the little boy slowly became optimistic. One day, the little boy lay on the bed but couldn’t sleep! Looking at the bright moonlight outside the window, he suddenly recalled what the biology teacher once said, plants generally grow at night.
