一、阅读选择
If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a second language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter(灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learned a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows in the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and having a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings had the same result in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

Letters as a way of communication have long given way to phone calls and WeChai messages.
But a TV show,Letters Alive,is helping bring this old way to keep in touch back into the present.
Letters Alive took its idea from a UK program with a similar name,Letters Live, which was first shown in 2013.Both shows feature famous actors and actresses, but there is no gossip,no eye-catching visual effects or any regular showbiz(娱乐业)activities. Instead,it's just one person walking up to a microphone and reading a letter.
But these are not just any letters. They are selected from a wide time span(时间跨度)and different subjects. There is,for example,a passionate letter that famous painter Huang Yongyu wrote to playwright Cao Yu 30 years ago to criticize his lack of creativity. There is also a heartfelt note from the Spring and Autumn Period written by two ordinary young soldiers to their elder brother to report their lives in the war z0ne,Every letter is like a small piece of
history. By hearing them being read,it's as if we were sent back in time to experience a moment that we would otherwise never have had the chance to.
"Letters Live makes us pause and imagine the lives behind the letters,"UK actor Benedict Cumberbatch told The Guardian. "It allows people from all ages and all walks of life to experience a moment of time in someone else's life for a brief moment."
Compared to published texts, letters also come with a personal touch.
One example from Letters Live was a note of thanks from the mother of a dying child to J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books. It read;"Mrs Rowling, cancer threatened to take everything from my daughter, and your books turned out to be the castle we so desperately needed to hide in."
According to Guan Zhengwen, the director of Letters Alice,it is this kind of humanity behind every letter that strikes a chord(引起共鸡)with the audience. It is also what made the show a big hit in China ever since it first aired on Dec 31 on TV.
"It's a thing of the past that entertainment shows establish themselves only with pretty faces,"Guan told Sohu News. "Showbiz is starting to switch to a focus on wisdom and intelligence.”

How many calories are there in every meal you eat? That seems like a difficult question to answer. But students at Aitkin High School in the United States can easily answer it now. They put what they eat into an online calorie counter(计算器). It quickly measures the amount of calories in their meals.
In fact, this is part of the school’s health class. It includes heart health, nutrition and fitness. Students can learn basic knowledge about fats, proteins, calories and sugar.
Students learn how to balance calories in and out. They will know what happens when the balance isn’t there. “The online calorie counter has turned out to be a cool tool to help you make healthy choices. Making one healthy eating decision can really make a difference.” Adam Carlson, the teacher in charge, told local newspaper Aitkin Independent Age.
They also discus good ways to burn calories in the gym. According to Carlson, the gym is a great place to burn calories and get stronger. But it doesn’t work for everyone. So they try to find different workout tips. “I’m t rying hard to teach the students that working out can be fun, challenging, and doesn’t need to take hours out of the day,” she said.

There are many dying languages. But at least one has recently been born, created by children living in a remote village in northern Australia, according to Carmel O’shannessy, a linguist at the University of Michigan.
The language, called Light Warlpiri, is spoken only by people under 35 in Lajamanu, a village of about 700 people in northern Australia. In all, about 350 people speak the language as their native tongue.
Since many of the first speakers of this language are still alive, Dr. O’shannessy has been able to document a “new” language in the very early period of its existence.
Everyone in Lajamanu speaks “strong” Warlpiri, an aboriginal(澳大利亚土著的)language unrelated to English and shared with about 4,000 people in several Australian villages. Many also speak Kriol, an English-based creole(混合语) that is widely spoken in northern Australia among aboriginal people of many native languages.
Many words in Light Warlpiri originate from English or Kriol. But light Warlpiri is not simply a combination of words from different languages.
Dr. O’shannessy offers this example: Nganimpa-ng gen wi-m si-m worm mai naus-ria. (We also saw worms at my house.)
It is easy to see nouns come from English. But the -ria ending on aus (house) means “in” or “at,” and it comes from Warlpiri. The -m ending on the verb “si” (see) indicated that event is wither happening now or has happened, a “present or past but not future” tense that does not exist in English or
Warlpiri. This is a way of talking so different from either Warlpiri or Kriol that it is considered a new language.
The development of the language, Dr. O’shannessy says, began with parents using baby talk with their children in a combination of the three languages. But the children took that language as their native tongue by adding some changes, especially in the use of verb structures, which are not present in any of the source languages. “After children created the new system, it has since become a marker of their identity as being young Warlpiri from the Lajamanu Community,” Dr. O’shannessy says.
13.What is Dr. O’shannessy’s main contribution?
A.She has preserved aboriginal languages.
B.She has worked hard to save dying languages.
C.She has helped to popularize English in Australia.
D.She has recorded the development of Light Warlpiri.
14.What is the common language in Lajamanu?
A.Kriol.B.Warlpiri.
C.English.D.Light Warlpiri.
15.What makes Light Warlpiri a new language?
A.The spelling.B.The grammar.
C.The Vocabulary.D.The pronunciation. 16.According to Dr. O’shannessy, Light Warlpiri is helpful in______. A.improving existing languages
B.understanding parent-child communication
C.showing young Warlpiri’s identity
D.achieving unity among the Lajamanu Community

If that means uploading as many selfies as possible, then so be it. It’s fun, and it’s a cool way to record your own life.
Finally, there are things to be careful about when you’re posting selfies. It’s easy to think you’re sharing a photo with a few people. 21.So don’t post anything online, the selfie especially.

B.The rise of selfies has become universal.

53.As we have more communication with foreigners, we should pay more attention to the differences in the body language.
As we see from the table, many differences exist between Chinese and American body language. It has been found that there are more physical touches between people in China than in America. Women in China often walk hand in hand, which is not so common in America. In America, people usually keep a distance between them and they seldom touch each other, especially for people of the same sex. Also, Americans think it rude to put out one’s tongue, while the Chinese often use this gesture when they are embarrassed. Furthermore, Chinese people will pat children on the head if they like them, while Americans do so when they want to express encouragement or comfort.
In a word, differences do exist; only by fully understanding all the differences in body language can we expect to communicate properly.
