Economic inequality is the “defining challenge of our time,”President Barack Obama declared in a speech last month to the Center for American Progress. Inequality is dangerous, he argued, not merely because it doesn’t look good to have a large gap between the rich and the poor, but because inequality itself destroys upward mobility, making it harder for the poor to escape from poverty. “Increased inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American Dream,” he said. Obama is only the most prominent public figure to declare inequality Public Enemy No. 1 and the greatest threat to reducing poverty in America. A number of prominent economists have also argued that it’s harder for the poor to climb the economic ladder today because the rungs(横档)in that ladder have grown farther apart. For all the new attention devoted to the 1 percent, a new dataset from the Equality of Opportunity Project at Harvard and Berkeley suggests that, if we care about upward mobility overall, we’re vastly exaggerating the dangers of the rich-poor gap. Inequality itself is not a particularly strong predictor of economic mobility, as sociologist Scott Winship noted in a recent article based on his analysis of this data. So what factors, at the community level, do predict if poor children will move up the economic ladder as adults? what explains, for instance, why the Salt Lake City metro area is one of the 100 largest metropolitan areas most likely to lift the fortunes of the poor and the Atlanta metro area is one of the least likely? Harvard economist Raj Chetty has pointed to economic and racial segregation, community density, the size of a community’s middle class, the quality of schools, community religiosity, and family structure, which he calls the “single strongest correlate of upward mobility. “ Chetty finds that communities like Salt Lake City, with high levels of two-parent families and religiosity, are much more likely to see poor children get ahead than communities like Atlanta, with high levels of racial and economic segregation. Chetty has not yet issued a comprehensive analysis of the relative predictive power of each of these factors. Based on my analyses of the data, of the factors that Chetty has highlighted, the following three seem to be most predictive of upward mobility in a given community: 1. Per-capita(人均)income growth 2. Prevalence of single mothers(where correlation is strong, but negative) 3. Per-capita local government spending In other words, communities with high levels of per-capita income growth, high percentages of two-parent families, and high local government spending —which may stand for good schools—are the most likely to help poor children relive Horatio Alger’s rags-to-riches story.

College Students" Starting Their Own Undertakings After Graduation
(分数:106.50)
__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:()
解析:
College Students" Starting Their Own Undertakings After Graduation
A number of college students choose to start their own undertakings instead of finding a job after their graduation. They make every effort to seek business and commercial opportunities to fulfill their ideals and dreams. This phenomenon has aroused great concern of our society.
Why do so many college students make the choice of starting their own undertakings? Firstly, college students are in face of the severe employment situation. Many graduates just can"t find ideal jobs, which forces them to make a hard decision to set up their own business and try their luck. Secondly, some ambitious college students are not satisfied with being employed by others. They want to develop their abilities by starting their own undertakings. Thirdly, the government"s encouragement and preferential policies have stimulated their enthusiasm to try. Last but not least, the media"s reports on college student venture stars also have some effect.

1.1. 目前大学生逃课现象很普遍2. 分析大学生逃课的原因3. 你对这一现象的看法Class Skipping in Colleges
正确答案:Class Skipping in Colleges Class skipping is something that is almost unimaginable for us when we were in middle school and high school, (1) but it becomes a usual phenomenon in today’s universities. What’s worse, some of the undergraduates do not think it is (2) a to skip classes. (3) There are some possible reasons for the phenomenon. (4) First, university students are not prepared to (5) live a self-disciplined life, and when this is companied by a loose management system of universities, class skipping inevitably appears and increases. (4) Second, the size of some of the university courses is too big: when (6) more than 100 or even 200 students are having one lecture together, the attendance of all the students can not possibly be accurately recorded. (4) Third, some of the college students may not find the direction for their future development. (7) In my view, it is not acceptable to skip classes (8) at our own will, (9) let alone the importance of academic learning and skill training. If we can not be a responsible individual and choose not to obey the rules, we can not make ourselves an eligible citizen.

Questions 36 to 45 are based on the following passage.
McDonald’s, Greggs, KFC and Subway are today named as the most littered brands in England as Keep Britain Tidy called on fast-food companies to do more to tackle customers who drop their wrappers and drinks cartons (盒子) in the streets.
Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, 26 its new Dirty Pig campaign, said it was the first time it had investigated which brands made up “littered England” and the same names appeared again and again. “We27 litterers for dropping this fast food litter in the first place but also believe the results have pertinent(相关的) messages for the fast food 28 . McDonald’s, Greggs, KFC and Subway need to do more to 29 littering by their customers.”
He recognized efforts made by McDonald’s, including placing litter bins and increasing litter patrols, but its litter rem ained “all too prevalent”. All fast food chains should reduce 30 packaging, he added. Companies could also reduce prices for those who stayed to eat food on their premises, offer money-off vouchers (代金券) or other 31 for those who returned packaging and put more bins at 32 points in local streets, not just outside their premises. A spokesman for McDonald’s said: “We do our best. Obviously we ask all our customers to dispose of litter responsibly.” Trials of more extensive, all-day litter patrols were under way in Manchester and Birmingham. KFC said it took its 33 for litter management “very seriously”,and would introduce a program to reduce packaging on many products. Subway said that it worked hard to minimize the impact of litter on communities, but it was “still down to the34 customer to dispose of their litter responsibly”.Greggs said it recognized the “continuing challenge for us all”, despite having already taken measures to help 35 the issue.
