Western history is a vast and complex subject that spans thousands of years and encompasses a multitude of cultures, events, and figures. As an English learner, understanding Western history can be both enlightening and challenging. Here are some key aspects to consider when delving into this subject:1. Ancient Civilizations: The history of the Western world begins with the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. These civilizations laid the foundation for many aspects of Western culture, including language, philosophy, and political systems.2. Classical Antiquity: The period of classical antiquity, particularly the era of the Roman Empire, is crucial to understanding the development of Western civilization. Latin, the language of the Romans, has influenced many modern European languages, and Roman law is the basis for many legal systems today.3. Middle Ages: The Middle Ages, often referred to as the Dark Ages, was a period of significant cultural and political change. The fall of the Roman Empire led to the rise of feudalism and the development of the Catholic Church as a major political force.4. The Renaissance: The Renaissance marked a period of rebirth in art, science, and culture. This era saw the emergence of great thinkers and artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, whose works continue to influence Western art today.5. Exploration and Colonization: The Age of Exploration led to the discovery of new lands and the colonization of the Americas, Africa, and Asia by European powers. This period had a profound impact on the world, leading to the exchange of goods, ideas, and cultures.6. The Reformation: The religious upheaval of the 16th century, known as the Reformation, split the Catholic Church and led to the establishment of Protestantism. This had significant political and social implications across Europe.7. The Enlightenment: The 18th century was marked by the Enlightenment, a movement that emphasized reason, individualism, and skepticism of traditional authority. This period laid the groundwork for modern democracy and human rights.8. The Industrial Revolution: The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the late 18th century, transformed economies and societies by introducing new manufacturing processes and technologies. It also led to significant social changes, including urbanization and the rise of the working class.9. Modern History: The 20th century was marked by two World Wars, the Cold War, and the rise and fall of various political ideologies, including communism and fascism. It also saw significant technological advancements and the beginning of the information age.10. Contemporary Issues: Understanding the historical context of current events is crucial. From the European Union to the ongoing debates about immigration and globalization, history provides a lens through which we can better understand the complexities of the modern world. When studying Western history, its important to approach it with an open mind and a critical eye. History is not just a collection of facts but a narrative that helps us understand the world we live in today. As you learn more, youll find that history is not static but constantly evolving as new perspectives and discoveries are made.。

基督教对西方思维的影响

基督教对西方思维的影响

The Influence of Christianity On The Westerner's Way of Thinking There are two billion followers believe in Christianity, which plays roles in most all over the word. Maybe our Chinese as an outsider can not have a deep understanding. Although from the birth of Christianity, it have suffered countless misery and heresy's persecution, the flag of "love" still wave in the air, giving relief and comfort, and stir the suffering people's persistence to live through this hard lifetime. Through everyday prayer and confession,,they want to be purified and distilled ,wishing one day they could live in the paradise when they die. We all known that American president take an oath when he come into power,he have Bible in his hand to add some solemn atmosphere; And in court when witness gives evidence,he must take his oath before the bible to ensure honesty. I think Christianity's influence on westerner's life in powerful even more powerful than confucius's influence in China, what''s more ,they have different beliefs. So the following is my understanding about Christianity's influence.Christianity have conveyed to westerner relatively more clear bottom-line consciousness. They believe beyond this secular world ,there is still a transcendent and pure spirit world, which to some extent charge the world, for its mysteriousness. From then on , this belief in God could comfort people when they get frustrated , could pray when face difficulty, more important is that when they do anything they clearly know God watch them, so they have to do something that match God's will; and consider their after life, according to God when people die , the people usually do something good will go to the paradise while the people who commit sin will beat tohell where he will suffer all torment, so the sense of worrying will decrease their "disposable"consciousness in their behavior. So when they do something which against conscience or basic moral, they have to consider its effect ,maybe it will block their way to paradise . On the contrary, in our Chinese heart we have no God ,we do not believe in God, so we can have any crazy behavior randomly ,for we do not believe after life, let alone God's punishment, we fear nothing, for there is bind in our spirit.Confession is Christian's daily work. It is the the way Christian used to communicate with God,maybe there is some unexpected meanings, which is the other aspect of Christianity's influence. Confession shows the solemn attitude toward past, the spirit of cherishing history and reflection. In west, some miserable memories, such as the slaughter of the jew during world war two, the dark age,and dirty events in political and power etc, they treat those case as true fact, and use those case to alert themselves and next generation. For example, as for the ruthless slaughter to jew ,the westerner choose recall this painful memory often to self-reflect and alert them keep cool-minded but not adopt the avoidance method. So western society established countless monuments, exhibition halls, memorical halls, university have some related courses, and common people also have many kinds of activities both spontaneously or organized, so the whole society have a good atmosphere, and children will accept the related education from very young age. Compared to westerners, what is our attitudes toward history? How much can we still remember the Rape of NanKing? How much can we remember The Cultural Revolution? As for the historical tragedy during thebeginning of our country founding, how mang can we also recall? Maybe the young generation even have no concept for that events, for we can not get sufficient materials, and we can not inherit the complete historical memory from last generation. For tragedy history,we always adopt avoidance way, but not face it bravely, just like an ostrich.we can not imagine , if the history could not be passed from one generation to another, how can one country reserve their special pared to the westerner,we are lack of the reflective spirit, we are tend to look "forward", alway concealing not bright side, decorating bright side purposely. The puritans advocate the spirit of penance, hard work and accumulate wealth to further investment and reproduction but not to enjoy. That is one of the most important reasons why Western Capitalism could develop rapidly. It is God's instruction that every people should hardworking and earnest to their work; and the wealth is the symbol of your diligence. So Christian are driven to work hard to produce more wealth ,which develop capitalism's finance objectively. Meanwhile, according to Bible: "It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye ,than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." so we can imagine, what is the meaning of the sentence to the rich westerners? No wonder Bill Gates have announced he donate all of his money to charitable industry, pennyless to his children. Donating all of their possessions is very common in western culture, especial the rich people.Although mang people argue that that is because of the high inheritance tax,but i think the more important reason is that we get enough money which is the symbol of diligence just to show our diligence, God always beside us,watching us ,so he could judge we are themost hardworking followers, then we will accompany God in paradise, then the worldly wealth is worthless. So mang westerners prefer to donate their wealth to charitable industry, education, or establish universities, let “brothers and sisters” live a better life, and themselves also have more chance to enter the paradise. To sum up, westerners have different ways of thinking and settling problems from our Chinese people, one of the most important reasons lies in the far-reaching influence of Christianity, and that influence sometimes beyond what we could imagine.Bibliography[1] 王宪生. 英国早期的基督教及影响. 郑州大学校报(哲学社会科学版). 1992[2] Larry A. The influence of Christianity on the Western countries

The influence of Christianity on the Western countries

The influence of Christianity on the Western countriesWestern Culture refers to the culture that has developed in the western world, while traditional western culture is said to have been created by three main historical factors: Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and Christianity. For the important role Ancient Greece and Roman Empire in human Civilization, the influence of them on the western culture is easily to be understood. However, in which aspects, or how Christianity, the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, influenced western culture? In this article, I will discuss some influence of Christianity on the western culture.Firstly, during Middle Ages, Christianity played a very important part in uniting the Europe confronted with chaos. Europe, especially the western part reached more understanding and agreement in culture thanks to Christianity. It made a great difference in shaping the general morality at that time. Moreover, the spirit of Christianity profoundly affected the civilizing of the Germans. Generally, the whole social values of the western world have been influenced by the thought of Christianity.Secondly, Christianity made contributions to the classical culture or in other words to the reconstruction of the classical civilization. Christianity was the only organization realizing the significance of Greek and Roman culture when the priceless classical culture was in the greatest danger of extinction. Much classical works had been copied, protectedand then carried forward by Christianity. It is not only meaningful to the grand classical culture but also to the development of the whole human race in terms of civilization. Besides, a new branch of subject-scholasticism, which is thought to be an essential section of philosophy was started and stimulated by Christianity.Thirdly, since there were no public schools then; it is Christianity that took the responsibility of education in the society. In addition, along the early phase of Middle Ages, most of the common people were illiterate, Christians were the very group able to save and spread culture. Besides, all the schools then were founded by Christianity, it is never too much to perceive the importance of its role in education. Their students could study “seven liberal ar ts” derived from Greek and Roman culture which served to pass on the spirit of Christianity. And because Christianity’s leading position in Middle Ages, literature took the church literature as its mainstay with the majority of writers being Christians. Through literature Christianity reaffirmed its status in Middle Ages. While speaking of art, Christianity made its unique influence. The Christian Art was creative with its own impressive characteristics. The highest achievement in art is believed to be in construction. With the church becoming the center of people’s life, building churches gained more and more attention and support. Nymphaeum and Gothic architecture are two distinguished innovations in architecture. The masterwork like cathedral of Pisa best conveyed the involving charms of nymphaeum; and Notre Dame de Paris represented higher elegance and grandness than the former of Gothic architecture. The art of painting in Middle Ages was also born under the influence of Christianity. The themes of paintings at that time are all concerned with Christianity. Though, finally paintings more related to the reality appeared, we can’t deny the impact of Christianity on paintings.Further more, the church firstly acted as a charity organization. And in many ways, Christianity served as government to help people, which laid a foundation of its irreplaceable position. All in all, Christianity has played an important role in western culture. Jesus Christ was one of the most influential persons in human history, and his preaching of salvation, redemption and immortality not only affected the social structure, the humanistic spirit and the morality but also their literature, philosophy and other aspects. Besides, in order to educate its clergy, the Roman Catholic Church founded many seminaries throughout Europe. These, in turn, grew into today’s universities and colleges. Nearly as monasticism, Christianity has great influence on the western culture.。

我最欣赏的西方文化英语作文

我最欣赏的西方文化英语作文

我最欣赏的西方文化英语作文Western culture has always fascinated me with its rich diversity and profound influence on the modern world. Among the many aspects of Western culture that I appreciate, there are a few that stand out as particularly inspiring and influential to me.Firstly, the spirit of innovation is a cornerstone of Western culture that I deeply admire. From the Industrial Revolution to the digital age, the West has been at the forefront of technological advancements and scientific discoveries. This culture of questioning the status quo and seeking new solutions has not only propelled human progress but also inspired individuals to think creatively and push the boundaries of what is possible.Secondly, the emphasis on individualism and personal freedom is another aspect that resonates with me. Western societies often encourage individuals to express themselves freely and to pursue their own paths in life. This focus on individual rights and self-determination has led to a vibrant cultural landscape where diversity is celebrated and each person's unique contributions are valued.Thirdly, the Western tradition of democracy and rule of law is something I hold in high regard. The principles of democracy, which include free and fair elections, the separation of powers, and the protection of human rights, have provided a framework for governance that prioritizes the will of the people and the common good. The rule of law ensures that everyone, regardless of their status, is held accountable under the same legal standards, which is fundamental to a just society.Additionally, the Western art and literature scene is a wellspring of creativity and thought-provoking content. From the Renaissance to modern cinema, Western artists and writers have explored the human condition, questioned societal norms, and provided a mirror to society through their works. This rich cultural heritage not only entertains but also educates and challenges the audience to think critically and empathetically.Lastly, the Western approach to education, which often emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and thepursuit of knowledge for its own sake, is something I greatly appreciate. Educational institutions in the West have historically been places where ideas are freely exchanged, and intellectual curiosity is nurtured. This has created a society that values lifelong learning and the continuous pursuit of understanding. In conclusion, the aspects of Western culture that I most appreciate are its spirit of innovation, individualism, democratic principles, artistic and literary contributions, and the emphasis on education. These elements have not only shaped the Western world but have also had a significant impact on global culture and society. They represent valuesand ideals that I believe are worth aspiring to and that can contribute to the betterment of our global community.。

My Views on the Infllunce of Western Culture

My Views on the Infllunce of Western Culture

My views on the Influence of Western CultureNowadays, we all live in the globalization and our country joined in WTO .So we get more opportunity to community with the foreign counties at all kinds of aspects. And in this situation, we are influencing by the other country’s culture, especially the western culture. we all see that the western culture is permeating our life.In our daily life, we can find some phenomenon and people around us that they were influenced by the western culture. For example, most children like to eat KFC ,more and more people also like to eat fast food like American people .Some young people like to hug instead of shaking hands when they meet their friends. And people’s dress are more similar with western people. Besides, more and more Chinese people love to celebrate western festival, however, some Chinese traditional festival were ignored. In my opinion , I think we should not draw lessons from all the western culture. For their good culture, we can learn. And for some other culture that not suit for us, we shouldn’t student them. We should persist in our great culture and develop our national culture.。

对西方文化的认识和看法英语作文

对西方文化的认识和看法英语作文

对西方文化的认识和看法英语作文My Views on Western CultureHi there! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. My teacher asked us to write an essay about our understanding and views on Western culture. I thought this would be a really interesting topic to explore.First of all, what exactly is Western culture? From what I've learned, it generally refers to the cultures of European countries as well as countries that were influenced a lot by European immigration and colonization, like the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Some key aspects of Western culture include Christianity, ancient Greek philosophy, Roman law, the Renaissance, and the Age of Enlightenment. One really cool part of Western culture is the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. I loved learning about Greek mythology with all the different gods and goddesses like Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, and Hercules. The stories are so imaginative and fun! The ancient Greeks also made really important contributions to subjects like philosophy, mathematics, and science. I think the Roman Empire is super fascinating too with their advancedarchitecture, roads, and aqueducts. My favorite is the Colosseum - I'd love to visit Rome someday and see it in person!Of course, Christianity is a hugely important part of Western culture and has shaped a lot of its values, traditions, and institutions. Christianity originated in the Middle East but then spread rapidly across Europe. The Bible stories we learn about in Sunday school, like Noah's Ark, the Nativity, and the Parables of Jesus are a key part of my understanding of the religion. I also love the traditions of Christmas and Easter. The Renaissance period from the 14th to 17th centuries was another major milestone in shaping Western culture through achievements in art, science, exploration, and more. Some of the most famous Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael created stunning paintings and sculptures that are just mind-blowing, even for a 10-year-old! This period also saw voyages of exploration by Columbus and others that connected Europe to the Americas.Moving into more modern times, the Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries promoted ideals like reason, individualism, and progress that became core values in the West. Thinkers and scientists of this era like Galileo, Newton, Locke, and Voltaire made revolutionary breakthroughs. TheEnlightenment principles of liberty, democracy and human rights went on to inspire revolutions in France and America.Western culture has produced so many brilliant writers, composers, artists, and inventors over the centuries. I could go on and on about Shakespeare's plays, Mozart's compositions, van Gogh's paintings, the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, the invention of the printing press, the telephone, the light bulb, and so much more. The list is just endless! These innovations have enriched the world in countless ways.At the same time, I've also learned that the history of Western nations includes some really negative aspects too, like colonialism, slavery, discrimination against women and minorities, and conflict between nations. These are obviously very serious issues that caused a lot of suffering and oppression. Even if I don't fully understand the complexities, I can recognize that racism, sexism, and abuses of power are never acceptable. While I absolutely love and appreciate so much about Western culture, I also really enjoy learning about cultures from other parts of the world too. Food is one area where I've gotten to experience a lot of diversity - my friends' families have shared delicious dishes from their Chinese, Indian, Mexican and Ethiopian cultural backgrounds. I find the different styles ofmusic, art, dance, and clothing traditions to be super interesting as well. One of the great things about living in a multicultural society is getting exposed to so many rich cultures.Overall, Western culture has had an incredibly profound impact in shaping modern society through its philosophy, religion, arts, political ideals, scientific achievements, and more. At the same time, it's important to recognize its flaws and negative aspects too. I feel really fortunate to have been raised with an appreciation for diversity. While deeply respecting my own cultural roots, I want to keep an open mind about learning from all the amazing cultures around the world. We're all humans at the end of the day, sharing one planet and connected more than ever before. If we can embrace both the universality of our shared experiences and the wonderful diversity of cultural expression, it can only lead to greater understanding, creativity and progress for everyone.。

基督教对西方的影响 英文

Influence of Christianity on current western society Christianity is one of the world’s main religions, which is the dominant religion in the western country. And until now, it still influence the modern western country deeply in this 21st century, not only in political systems and education, but also in holidays, social problems and so forth. 48 The most deeply influence is in political systems, I think.Christianity has brought the development of the Western political systems and law. Whether it is in the choice of political system or the maintenance of social order , the Christian civilization has always been the thrust of the highest spiritual guides the political fantasy of the people who have reasons and love of political fantasy . In the meantime, in order to enable people to fully use their democratic rights and to prevent problems in the use of power, let all the people to participate in decision-making as much as possible and let people to elect and depute their trust groups or organizations to join the process under the legal proceedings. The most famous in it is Britain Magna Carta and American Declaration of Independence. 132 But what deeply connected with us is education. It is Christianity that rises the concept of universal education. And what’s more, it is also the base of university. The best universities in the world are set up for Christianity’s purpose. For example, USA’s first one hundred and twenty-three universities are set up for training the pastors and preachers. Talking about the modern civilian education, it rose in Eupore during the Reformation period. Obviousely, the education system is original from Christianity. 80Nowadays, Christianity still has an important impact to our society and it causes a lot of problems. In June of 2003, when the US president then Bush announced its support of Road map to peace in the Middle East, he received 50,000 postcards from the Christian conservatives for protesting any plans to create a Palestinian state. And then, the government change their mind at once, ending up with nothing conclusive. 70 Always, holidays exhilarate us most. There is no doubt that a lot of holidays are originated from Christianity. Christmas at December 25th is the most important Christian festival which is celebrated for the birth of Jesus. However, in order to memory the death of Jesus, westerns celebrate the Good Friday two weeks before Easter which is for the resurrection of Jesus. These three festivals are most typical in the modern western country. 72 We have reasons to believe that Chritianity will still give its unshakeable play to the modern western society now and in the future. 23Total: 425。

关于西方和东方道德价值观的英语作文

关于西方和东方道德价值观的英语作文

关于西方和东方道德价值观的英语作文Western and Eastern Moral ValuesHave you ever wondered why people from different parts of the world sometimes have very different ideas about what is right and wrong? I think it's really interesting to learn about the moral values – or the beliefs about good and bad behavior – that different cultures have. Let me tell you about some of the key differences between Western and Eastern moral values. In the West, which includes countries like the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, one of the most important values is individualism. This means that people believe each person should be free to make their own choices and decisions in life without too many rules or obligations holding them back. Western cultures really value personal freedom and independence.Another big Western value is equality. The idea is that every person should have equal rights and opportunities, no matter their gender, race, religion or anything else. Westerners believe that discrimination against certain groups is wrong and that a just society treats everyone as equals before the law.A third important moral value in the West is human rights. This means believing that every person has basic rights that should be protected, like the right to life, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and so on. If a government tries to take away those basic rights, many Westerners would see that as very wrong. In contrast, in Eastern cultures like those found in China, Japan, India and other Asian countries, moral values tend to be a bit different. One of the most important Eastern values is collectivism rather than individualism. In collectivist cultures, people identify more with their family or community than just themselves as an individual. There is a bigger emphasis on loyalty, obedience and doing what's best for the group.Another key Eastern value is respect for authority and tradition. Children are taught from a young age to obey their parents, teachers and elders without question. There is also great respect for ancient traditions, rituals and wisdom passed down over many generations. Change happens more slowly in Eastern cultures.A third major moral value in the East is harmony. This means trying to avoid conflict, competition or open disagreement as much as possible. The goal is to live in balance and peace withothers. Behaviors that might disrupt group harmony, like speaking out bluntly or putting your own interests first, are often seen as rude or unethical.Of course, these are just general differences and there are many exceptions. You can find very individualistic people in Asia and very community-focused people in the West. But I think it's helpful to understand some of the underlying philosophical differences when it comes to moral values. In my opinion, both Western and Eastern values have their strengths and weaknesses. I like the Western emphasis on personal freedom, equality and human rights. But I also respect how Eastern cultures really value family, authority and group harmony. Ideally, we could take the best from both value systems. What do you think? Do you agree that these are some of the key differences in moral values between East and West? I'd be really interested to hear your perspective. Perhaps by learning about each other's values, we can develop a deeper understanding between cultures. And who knows, maybe one day we could even blend the best parts of Western and Eastern morality into one shared value system for the whole world. But for now, I just think it's fascinating food for thought!。

西方对东方的价值观英语作文

西方对东方的价值观英语作文

西方对东方的价值观英语作文Here is an essay on the topic of "Western Perspectives on Eastern Values" with more than 1000 words, written in English without any additional title or unnecessary punctuation marks. The cultural exchange between the East and the West has been a topic of great interest and importance for centuries. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, understanding the unique perspectives and values of different civilizations has become more crucial than ever. In this essay, we will explore the ways in which Western societies have perceived and grappled with the distinctive value systems of the East. One of the most striking differences between Eastern and Western worldviews is the emphasis on individualism versus collectivism. Western societies, particularly those influenced by the Enlightenment and the rise of liberal democracies, have traditionally placed a high value on individual rights, personal autonomy, and the pursuit of self-interest. In contrast, many Eastern cultures, such as those found in China, Japan, and India, have historically prioritized the collective well-being of the group, whether it be the family, the community, or the nation. This difference in emphasis has led to divergentapproaches to social, political, and economic structures, as well as to the way individuals perceive their role within society.Another key distinction lies in the approaches to spirituality and the divine. While Western religions, such as Christianity and Islam, often emphasize a monotheistic deity and a clear separation between the sacred and the secular, Eastern belief systems, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism, tend to view the divine as more diffuse and interconnected with the natural world. This holistic perspective has influenced Eastern approaches to ethics, art, and the pursuit of enlightenment, which often emphasize the importance of harmony, balance, and the interconnectedness of all things. The Western perception of Eastern values has evolved over time, often reflecting the shifting political and economic realities of the global landscape. During the colonial era, many Western scholars and administrators viewed Eastern cultures through a lens of cultural superiority, dismissing or misinterpreting their belief systems and social structures as primitive or backward. This attitude was often used to justify the imposition of Western norms and institutions upon colonized societies. However, as the 20th century progressed, a growing appreciation for the richness and complexity of Eastern civilizations began to emerge in the West. The counterculture movements of the 1960s and 1970s,for instance, saw a renewed interest in Eastern spirituality and philosophy, with figures like the Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh gaining widespread popularity. Similarly, the economic rise of East Asian nations, such as Japan and China, has led to a greater recognition of the value of Eastern approaches to business, education, and technology. At the same time, the encounter between Eastern and Western values has not been without its challenges and tensions. The process of globalization has brought about a greater intermixing of cultures, leading to both cultural exchange and cultural clashes. Issues such as human rights, gender equality, and environmental protection have sometimes highlighted the differences between Eastern and Western value systems, sparking debates and conflicts. Moreover, the representation of Eastern cultures in Western media and academia has often been subject to criticism, with concerns raised about the perpetuation of stereotypes, the oversimplification of complex belief systems, and the appropriation of cultural practices for Western consumption.Despite these challenges, the ongoing dialogue between Eastern and Western perspectives continues to be a vital aspect of our global civilization. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, it is crucial that we strive to understand and appreciate the unique valuesystems and worldviews of different cultures, rather than simply imposing our own norms and assumptions.By embracing a more nuanced and respectful understanding of Eastern values, the West can gain valuable insights into alternative approaches to societal organization, spiritual fulfillment, and the pursuit of a harmonious and sustainable future. Similarly, the East can benefit from engaging with the Western emphasis on individual rights, scientific inquiry, and technological innovation.Ultimately, the richness of human civilization lies in its diversity, and the exchange of ideas and perspectives between the East and the West can serve as a powerful catalyst for mutual understanding, cultural growth, and the advancement of the human condition. As we continue to navigate the complex challenges of our time, it is our responsibility to cultivate an appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human experience and to work towards a more inclusive and equitable global community.。

The influence of Christianity on Western Civilization

The influence of Christianity on Western Civilization

The influence of Christianity on Western CivilizationWestern Civilization refers to the civilization that has developed in the western world, while traditional western civilization is said to have been created by three main historical factors: Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and Christianity. For the important role Ancient Greece and Roman Empire in human civilization, the influence of them on the western civilization is easily to be understood. However, in which aspects, or how Christianity, the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, influenced Western Civilization? In this article, I will discuss some influence of Christianity on the Western Civilization.Christianity is the religion of the followers of Jesus Christ. The beliefs and practices of the first Christian churches, established in the Middle East and around the Mediterranean Sea 2000 years ago, are recorded in the New Testament of the Bible.Today, Christians make up over one third of the world’s population. Christianity is the major religion in Europe, the Americas and Australia. It also has followers in Africa and Asia. Christianity is the core of Western Civilization. Till now, people still use Christian Civilization to symbolize western civilization. Christianity have great influence on many fields, such as language, literature, art, music, education, law, ideology, morality, family unit, social structure, and etc.1.The influence on languageChristianity’s influence on language is often overlooked and even taken for granted. Without the Bible much of what we enjoy today would be non-existent. The English language incorporates many words and phrases taken from the Bible when first translated. In 1380 John Wycliffe translated the Scriptures in its entirety and from itappears many of the words we still use today including the words adoption, ambitious, cucumber, liberty, and scapegoat among others. William Tyndale translated the first English translation from the original texts. A renowned scholar on the literature of the Bible, Alistair Mcgrath notes, “Without the king James Bible, There would have been no Paradise Lost, no Pilgrim’s Progress, no Handel’s Messiah, no Negro spirituals, and no Gettysburg Address”.2.The influence on literatureOver the ages, writers have loved to mine the Bible’s narrative riches, taking a Bible story and retelling it in a new form: a long novel, a stage play, a musical, an opera, or a screenplay.Sometimes, a writer uses a Bible story as a starting point and then expands it with new characters and events not in the original. The most abundant kind of inspiration that the Bible has provided for Western literature is, of course, the many themes to be found in its stories and teachings. Often the use of a Biblical phrase in the title of a novel or play will indicate the presence of such a theme. Other times, there is no explicit reference in the particular literary work, yet those familiar with the Bible will recognize the source of the themes. Even works that seem to be in direct opposition to certain Biblical concepts have none the less been influenced by the Biblical material.Biblical symbols and Christian philosophies appear very frequently in literature works. Traditional English drama has its fountainhead in the enactment of biblical narrative, and usually the central theme also has a strong biblical connotation. Modern, even contemporary English literature still has frequent symbolic reference to the bible, for example, although the author never admitted it, Hemmingway’s The Old Man andthe Sea has a huge number of “coincidental”timeframe clashes with the Bible, which literature critics argue that “undeniably reflects the author’s philosophy that everyone in himself is a Christ”. In addition, the Old Testament also ranks top one in the most influential books of All-Time, according the many sources. From Dante to Milton to Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the words and themes found in the Scriptures have made their way into much of the literature we study and enjoy today. Other great writers in the history of Western Civilization include Chaucer, William Shakespeare, John Donne, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, William Blake, T.S. Eliot, and William Faulkner .It is generally accepted that the Bible have great influence on western literature.3.The influence on artWhile speaking ofart, Christianity made its unique influence. The Christian Art was creative with its own impressive characteristics. The highest achievement in art is believed to be in construction. With the church becoming the center of people’s life, building churches gained more and more attention and support. Nymphaeum and Gothic architecture are two distinguished innovations in architecture. The art of painting in Middle Ages was also born under the influence of Christianity. The themes of paintings at that time are all concerned with Christianity. Though, finally paintings more related to the reality appeared, we can’t deny the impact of Christianity on paintings.4.The influence on musicMusic is viewed by the church as another way of carrying God’s message to man, and thus numerous composers have written large number of hymns that definitely havebiblical references, and some operas that have biblical themes. These operas are still performed in a regular basis in the contemporary west, although it probably is largely due to their aesthetic values rather than religious importance. Art depicting biblical scenes was made popular especially during the Renaissance with artists such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt. Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most famous composers, was greatly influenced by the Scriptures. The cantata, a genre of vocal music in the Baroque period and a key part of the German Lutheran service, was primarily used in Bach’s music. Many other forms of music known today have Christian roots such as the sonata, the symphony, and the oratorio. Most forms of music began as psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs and the outgrowth from there progressed as the monks and churches spread throughout the ages. Biblical stories were dramatized and performed in song as early as ninth century. A well-known church drama in the tenth century was Visitatio sepulchri. There is good reason to believe the opera evolved out of church drama that appeared five hundred years before the Renaissance. The works of Handel, Beethoven, Mozart, and Mendelssohn among others have greatly been influenced by the words of the Bible.5.The influence on educationContrary to popular opinion, Christians are not anti-education. The world's best universities which like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale and Princeton and other universities are founded by the Christians for the purpose of Christianity. In fact, the first 126 colleges and universities in the U.S.A. were built for the glory of Jesus and the advancement of the gospel.Education was almost under complete church control for a long period of time, datingback to pre-middle ages. The mandate study of the bible shapes, if not completely indoctrinates the student’s mind. Though this is no longer the case nowadays, there are parents who actively want to teach their children the bible, because for them, it’s the words from God.These words are tightly attached to the Truth, and thus helps to form some authority in their children’s life.Christianity’s influence on education can be seen at its very inception with the teachings of Jesus who used words, parables, and human-life illustrations and taught others who then would become teachers themselves.6.The influence on lawMost of the original laws that America judicial system upheld were taken directly from the Bible. America present-day judicial system has now drifted away from its original intent of protecting the innocent and unjustly accused, while convicting the wicked so they will not harm others. Today, it is being exploited by many lawyers, as well as people who want to use the legal system for personal gain beyond what would be a fair settlement. They are seeking outlandish judgments that in the end all the people will pay for. Through unfair settlements in these kinds of suits, the lawyers are the ones most rewarded.Protection of the innocent, in many cases, has been overruled while criminals are not justly dealt with. Quick punishment for the guilty has been abandoned, as court appeals and delays stretch into costly and lengthy trials that last for years at the public's expense. We need to return to Biblical principles and once again shapeour laws accordingly, if we desire to see justice in our land. Since the bible suggests that suicide is guilty, historically many western legal systems regard it as a criminal offense. In fact, the English Law regards such an act as illegal until thepassing of the Suicide Act on 1961, while in the united states, various states listed the act as a felony although not very active in enforcing it, and until 1976, 6 states still consider an attempted suicide as a crime. The judicial procedure in the western world also involves a well known feature that the witness must swear an oath by the bible before giving his testimony, which can be viewed as another way of reflecting the importance of the Bible in the west.7.The influence on ideologyAmong other things, the influence of Christianity has spread into the concept of freedom and the individual. Without this freedom there is no real freedom on the economic, political, or religious level. From its inception, Christianity has placed a high value on the individual in stark contrast to the Greco-Roman culture in which the individual was always subordinate to the state. Malcolm Muggeridge, once a non- Christian but later a strong defender of Christianity, said, “We must not forget that our human rights are derived from the Christian faith. In Christian terms every single human being, whoever he or she may be, sick or well, clever or foolish, beautiful or ugly, every human being is loved by his Creator, who as the Gospels tell us, counted the hairs of his head”. Individual freedom has led to many positive effects in the history of Western society. One essential aspect of this began with individuals such as Tertullian, Lactantius, St. Augustine, and later Martin Luther who promoted religious freedom. Luther, standing before Emperor Charles V and the Diet of Worms in 1521 declared: The liberty and justice that are enjoyed by human in Western societies and in some non-Western countries are increasingly seen as the products of a benevolent, secular government that is the provider of all things. There seems to be no awarenessthat the liberties and rights that are currently operative in free societies of the West are to a great degree the result of Christianity’s influence. More than one thousand years before the birth of Christ the biblical requirement given by Moses comprised an essential component of the principle that “no man is above the law.”8.The influence onmoralityChristianity had contributions to morality. First, let’s answer these two questions: whether the high standards of morality taught in Scripture have served society well? Has Christianity served to make individuals and societies better and to provide a better way of life? Obviously, the answers are positive. In modern times, it was Christians who led the fight in England against slavery. The Roman Games, in which “beasts fought men, men fought men,”reveal the lust for blood. Unwanted babies were left to die on trash heaps. Some of these were taken to be slaves or prostitutes. It was distinctly Christian beliefs that brought these practices to an end.9.The influence on family unitThe Bible is very supportive of the family unit as God created the first family. The family unit in America was the strongest when the national life of the nation upheld laws and principles that protected it.The Lord desires for the family unit to once again thrive with the husband as the head of the family who loves and nurtures his wife and children.Christian homes that are in God’s order will produce happy and loving families. Many cultures throughout history made women mere chattels or property of the man. When Jesus came, He truly liberated women to be restored to their proper place in a marriage. The Biblical model for marriage is a partnership between a husband and wife, where both partieslove and respect each other.Cultures and societies without the Bible’s influence usually repress and use the women and even the children.10.The influence on social structureFor one thing, Christianity changed the social structure. From the perspective of social development, the church has become the organization ties and self-authority for social family cohesion, and has also become a source of order and peace. This kind of order formed the core of church for the organization has a far more powerful function than the secular government in ending the anarchy. Christianity faith gradually gathers up the entire western Christian belief in the consensus, thus forming a transcendental conscience in relation to the secular power and their interests. With the growing popularity and expansion of the church, the general consensus in moral or spiritual which is independent of secular kingship has gradually evolved into a highly organized religion authorityAll in all, Christianity has played an important role in western culture.

My view of Christianity on the western culture
Now more and more western people have faith in Christianity , they believe that once a person was born, god give him or her the basic right as a people. And the basic religious doctrine creed of Christianity is god, they have conviction in one god, who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. What’s more, Christianity believe that god creates everything in the universe, including human’s earliest ancestor. And only you believe in Christianity, can you go to the heaven after your death.
The influence of Christianity on the western culture is various, and he gradually infiltrate in the western philosophy, the science of law, the education, the art and the science etc.
In the field of philosophy, Christianity established the recent western speculative philosophy. Like Engels said;”Middle ages only know one kind of ideology, that’s religion and theology ”. Christianity, whose core is god, theology is the ideology hierarchy of idealism, in the early Christian philosophy phase, the unity in Christianity about the nature of god and human etc. constituted all the content of the god-father’s philosophy. Saint Augustine, as a platonist, he made rational succumbs to faith, wrote down the “Confession”, “the Trinity”, “City of God”, etc. so many works, which had a far-reaching influence in the western philosophy. Thomas Aquinas founded an encyclopedic theological system for Christian, which was more helpful for Christian philosophy’s influence and position. In a word, Christianity had a far-reaching influence in western philosophy.
In the field of law, modern Roman Law just went though the transformation of the European Christian, it was the religious product of rationalization and secularization. And the fame jurist consult Rudolf V on Jhering had a word “Roman had conquered the world third times, first used force, second used religion, third used law”, in the middle times, European was regarded as a time of divine order. Once the Raman law was accepted, it was spread and amended, and eventually came the law. To the ecclesiastical law, especially to the civil law, it had been included legality and legal government, already had a conception that a country established under the basic of the law. So it had some influence in western law.
And in the field of education, Christianity laid the foundation of modern western education. In the middle century, there already had been monastery of Christianity , what’s more, it acquired a high achievement. Today’s higher education and college system all came from the middle century’s cathedral school and monastery. However, in the 12th century, the emerge of the college brought a deep revolution on western culture life and education system. With the view of western history, all kinds of education system, the produce and development of institutional facility could not separate with Christian church.
In the field of literature, in the early middle century, almost all the literature works created around Christianity. Such as The Songs of Roland, The LongGen song, Igor expedition to record, Alexander’s story, The Divine Comedy, the Bible and so on. All of this had far-reaching influence in western literature. In the field of music, they created a lot famous songs around Christian spirit, which had far-reaching, too.
In a word, Christianity made a positive effect to western culture, especially made an extremely profound influence to the development of western culture.。
