My Favorite Cartoon: Tom and Jerry
Tom and Jerry is my all-time favorite cartoon! I've been watching the crazy cat and mouse chase each other around since I was a little kid. There's just something so funny and exciting about their never-ending battle of wits.
For those who don't know, Tom is a grey and white cat who is always trying to catch and eat Jerry, a quick and clever little brown mouse. I love how creative Jerry is in the ways he outsmarts Tom. He'll set up these elaborate traps and contraptions to prank poor Tom. One of my favorite gags is when Jerry leads Tom into thinking there's a delicious cheese or something waiting for him, but then it turns out to be a trick! Tom ends up getting bonked on the head or something falls on him. I laugh every single time!
The animation in Tom and Jerry is so exaggerated and cartoony in the best way possible. When Tom gets hurt, his body contorts into these crazy shapes. His eyes will pop out, or his face will get all flat and stretched out. And Jerry has this devilish little smile whenever he's got one over on Tom. But no matter how much she loved him, Tom just couldn't resist going after Jerry. That led to her scolding Tom all the time with, "Oh Thomas, don't you think you were a little rough on him?"
As I got older, I started appreciating the subversive humor and social commentary that Tom and Jerry often had. For a cartoon that doesn't use dialogue, it's amazing how pointed the satire could be at times, especially when it came to mocking authority figures or poking fun at different cultures and stereotypes.
Like there's one classic episode where a white family has just moved into the suburbs, and it satirizes racist housing practices of the time by having Tom put up all these "No Dogs or Mice Allowed" signs to try and exclude Jerry from the neighborhood. Heady stuff for what is ostensibly a kids cartoon about a cat and mouse!
That ability to work on multiple levels - with basic slapstick humor for kids but also deeper social satire for adults to appreciate - is a huge part of Tom and Jerry's enduring appeal in my opinion. It's what separates it from so many other cartoons that are more one-dimensional.
I have so many favorite episodes and moments that it's hard to pick just one. The classics like "Dog Trouble" where Spike is first introduced, or "Solid Serenade" with Tom playing some great blues songs on his bass. And I'll never forget the brilliantly

Personally though, if I had to choose one favorite, it might be "Mouse Cleaning" from 1948. In this one, Tom is bringing a robotic mouse cleaning contraption to life that's hell-bent on catching Jerry. The escalating chaos as this relentless gizmo chases Jerry all over the house is just perfection. And there's an amazing bit where Tom gets his tail sheared off and the machine keeps chasing it alone! Pure cartoon genius.
So while animation styles and technologies have evolved so much over the decades, Tom and Jerry has never gone out of style for me. The simplicity of the premise combined with brilliant comic timing and endless creative gags is pretty much a perfect recipe for comedy.
