2、 seize v. 抓住,夺取,利用,没收
◆In a climate of political unrest, a dictator can often seize power. 在动荡的政治气候下,独裁者常常能夺取政权。 ◆He would seize upon any excuse to justify himself. 他会利用任何借口为自己辩解。 ◆They seized the drugs and arrested the people on the boats. 他们没收毒品,逮捕船上的人。
◆The water was condemned as unfit to drink. 这种水被宣告不宜饮用。 condemn sb. to sth./to do sth. 使某人注定怎么样 ◆As an old person, one is often condemned to live alone. 老年人常常注定要孤孤单单地生活。
trap 多指诱捕。

3、 awesome adj. 可怕的,表示敬畏的;了不起的,精彩的,绝妙的
◆An awesome thunderstorm struck the city yesterday. 昨天,一场可怕的暴风雨侵袭了这个城市。 ◆The archaeologist stood in awesome silence before the ancient ruins. 那名考古学家在古代遗址前充满敬畏地默立着。 ◆You will feel awesome changes within you. 你会在你的内心感觉到令人惊叹的改变。
arrest, capture, catch, seize, trap这些动词均有“抓住,捕捉”之意。
arrest 指根据法律或命令进行逮捕并予以监禁或拘留。
capture 指通过武力或计谋等,战胜抵抗而捉住敌人或动物。
catch 普通用词,指捉住跑动或隐藏中的人或动物,一般指活捉。
seize 侧重指以突然、有力地动作迅速抓住或捉住。
2. A 考查非谓语动词。动词ing形式表示伴随。从“were working”可以判断是进行时态,排除C。

demand to do sth. 要求做某事 ◆Good secretaries are always in demand. 好的秘书总是很多人都需要的。 ◆Do you think the President will give in to the terrorists' demand? 你认为总统会对恐怖分子的要求让步吗? ◆I demand an apology. 我要求道歉。 注意:在demand后面的宾语从句中,谓语动词要用“should +do”的虚拟语气形式。

4、decline

can't / can never…too…/enough表示“越……越好;无论怎样……也不过分”。 ◆We can't thank him enough. 我们无论怎样感谢他也不过分。 ◆You cannot be too careful(=You can never be careful enough) to do your homework. 你做作业越仔细越好(=无论怎样仔细也不过分)。
7、tendency n. 趋势, 倾向, 秉性
◆There is a tendency towards regional cooperation. 有一种地区性合作的趋势。 ◆There is a growing tendency for people to work at home instead of in offices. 人们在家里而不是在办公室里工作的趋势日益增长。
1、 Just imagine performing such an opera in the Forbidden City — there could not be a more awesome setting! 试想在紫禁城上演这样一部戏剧——这样的背景再好不过了!
当can't (couldn't) 与形容词的比较级形式连用时,往往不在于否定谓语动词,而是在于加强全句的语气,此外,can't (couldn't) 的习惯用法也常具有特殊的强调功能。否定词never, no, not, nothing等与比较级连用时,往往表达最高级含义。

scold sb. (for sth./doing sth.) 叱责某人
His father scolded him for upsetting his mother. 他让他母亲不安,因此他父亲责骂他。

7、 condemn vt. 判刑,处刑;谴责,声讨
condemn / sentence sb. to sth. 宣告某人要受刑 ◆The judge condemned/sentenced the thief to six months' imprisonment. 法官判这个贼6个月监禁。 condemn sb./ sth. (as/for sth.) 谴责;指责 ◆The papers were quick to condemn him for his mistake. 报纸及时地指责他的错误。 condemn sth. (as sth.) 宣称某物有缺陷或不宜使用
