As I began to feel completely sick of the cold North American winter, spring break finally arrived! What made me even more excited was that we were going to Florida to enjoy the warm weather!
Just imagine wearing short clothes or a swimsuit under the hot Florida sun!
Before the vacation started, we met with something at the airport. The alarm sounded when my mom and I were walking through the security check. We were taken away to have further checks, but when they finally told us that we could go, we felt relaxed and happy. It was just because of the decorations on our bodies.
Of course, I had a lot of first experiences during this special vacation. Since eight of us were living in a house, we had to share bedrooms. I, fortunately or unfortunately, had to share a room with my 4-year-old host sister. She is little compared to me, but she took up about two thirds of the bed. Moreover, because I was not used to sleeping in the same room with others, I was afraid of waking her up and hardly slept at all.
Luckily, except for that, everything went really well. My family were really warm-hearted, and they wanted me to try everything new. With their words, I was “forced” to go boating, which turned out to be really fun. We boated fast and I saw manatees (海牛) and dolphins with my own eyes for the very first time!
When we finally landed in Wisconsin again, everyone looked sun-burnt and full of energy!

The New Year is a time for celebrations for almost everyone around the world. In Britain, people go to pubs and nightclubs to dance the old year away, and to welcome in the new one at midnight.
In recent years, street parties have become more popular. Thousands of people gather in squares, main streets or on the river banks to listen to bands playing and to see fireworks displays.
For people who stay at home, most are attracted by the special, live New Year shows on TV and they are waiting for countdown, along with the presenters, from 10 to 1 as the last seconds of the old year tick away and the bells of the New Year are rung.
In Scotland people visit their neighbours and drink, dance on New Y ear’s Eve. If you’re invited to a Scottish home that night,it’s important to know what to bring with you: a lump of coal, some shortbread (酥饼)and some whisky.
But what do these gifts mean? Well, the coal shows warmth so you’re wishing that the people you visit will have enough heat in the coming year. The shortbread represents food, so you’re hop ing that the people will have enough to eat in the New Year. Some Scots call whisky “the water of life”, so when you hand over your bottle to your hosts, it means you want them to have enough to drink over the next 12 months.
And there’s one more key task you still have to perform if you can. The first person to knock on a neighbour’s door is supposed to be a tall, dark, handsome man who will bring good luck to the household. But what if that’s not you? Well, don’t ring the bell just yet. Wait a while and the right person is sure to turn up soon!

As a child, Monty Robert often went from one farm to another with his father, a horse trainer. Sometimes they didn’t have enough money to pay for food, but Monty Robert kept hoping to own a horse farm.
When he was in school, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up. He wrote a seven-page paper talking about his goal of having a big horse farm. He even drew a picture of a horse farm. The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he got his paper back. On the front page was a large red “F” with a note that read, “See me after class.” So the boy did and asked, “Why did I get an ‘F’?”The teacher said, “This dream will not come true for a young boy like you. There is no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “If you write this paper again with a simple dream, I will give you a good grade.”

In most Western restaurants and homes there are rules about how to talk, eat and sit.
Usually dinner is enjoyed with quiet voices, and people are not allowed to bring up anything unappetizing. For example, if someone wants to leave the table to use the toilet, he has to do it without mentioning what he is going to do.
Eating is always quiet. No eating noises are allowed. Therefore, people have to eat with their mouths closed. While drinking soup, coffee or wine, ‘slurping’(啧啧的声音) is also forbidden.
How to sit at the table is also prescribed (被规定的). Everyone should sit up straight with one hand (usually the left) in his lap holding a napkin while the other hand (usually the right) holds the fork or spoon. The only time people are allowed to have both hands on the table is when they are using a knife to cut something, but as soon as the cutting is done, the hand goes back to the lap. Also, elbows (肘) are not allowed on the table. People should never reach for any food on the table. They should ask someone sitting near it to pass it to them. For example, “Would you please pass me the potatoes?”
As soon as you are seated, take the napkin away from your place setting, unfold it, and put it on your lap. At more formal occasions all dinners will wait to place their napkins on the laps until the host or hostess places his or her napkin on his
or her lap. If your napkin falls on the floor during a very formal event, do not pick it up. You’d better signal a waitress that you need a fresh one.
