"Are you busy?" 的含意比較廣, 也可指「最近」忙不忙?) 大家不要小看這麼小小的變化, 如果你除了"Are you busy?" 之外, 有時還懂得刻意去用"In the middle of something?" 我相信你的的英文說出來就會跟別人不一樣. 舉個例子吧, 辦公室裏想找人八卦, 又怕人家正在忙, 這時你就可以問他, "In the middle of something?" (正在忙嗎?)記得在不久之前看過的一部黑人電影Down to Earth 中也有in the middle of something 這個用法, 只不過男主角是用這句話來提出一個論點, "The first kiss is always in the middle of something." 也就是說, 初吻總是發生在講話講到一半時, 或是當你們正在作其它的事情時, 通常是果不其然的. 他同時也覺得, "The first kiss is the only real kiss in your relationship." (只有初吻才是真正的吻), "The others are just protocols" (其它的都只是一種敷衍、虛應故事而已.)2. What are you up to?你正在作什麼?跟上面的例子一樣, 「你正在作什麼啊?」這句話通常我們就只會說, "What are you doing?" 這樣子不會很無聊嗎? 其實有時我們可以換句話說. 例如: "What are you up to?" 同樣也是問人家你正在作什麼. 承上例, 假設你在辦公室裏, 你想找人八卦, 所以問同事, "In the middle of something?" 他回答, "Kind of." (算是吧.) 這時你就可以打破砂鍋問到底, "What are you up to?" (那你最近在忙什麼啊?) 另外有時候老美見面時也會問"What are you up to?" 意思就是問你最近在作什麼啊? 跟另一句問候語"What's up?" 意思上很接近. 但是你要聽對方的語氣喔! 有時候"What are you up to?" 指的雖然還是"What are you doing?" 但它卻是「你在搞什麼鬼啊?」的意思喔! 例如當你看到別人在亂翻你的東西, 你就可以責問他, "Hey, what are you up to?" 也就是罵他「你在搞什麼鬼啊?」. 或是像電影Blow 裏毒販的老爸罵他的兒子, "I know what you are up to." (我知道你在幹些什麼勾當.) 以上這些例子裏, "What are you up to?" 完全可以用"What are you doing?" 來取代, 只不過因為我們在說話時要力求變化, 所以要多學幾種不同的講法.其實"What are you up to?" 還有許多其它的意思, 在此不一一列舉, 不過還有一個比較常用的解釋是, 「進展的如何了?」例如朋友告訴你他正在寫一部武俠小說, (就像我的labmate 一樣), 你就可以問他, "What are you up to?" (進展的如何了), 而他的回答可能是, "I am writing Chapter 3 now." 我現在正在寫第三章呢.3. Can you just give me a ballpark figure?能不能給我一個大概的數字.Ballpark 指的是專供球類比賽的公園, 特別是指大型的棒球場. 例如亞特蘭大勇士隊(Atlanta Braves) 的主場, Turner Field 就是一個ballpark. 那什麼是ballpark figure 呢? 通常在棒球比賽時不是都會報今天的觀眾人數, 例如是49,132 人嗎? 這個數字49,132 就是ballpark figure, 但這只是一個大約的估計數字而已, 所以ballpark figure 的意思就是指大約的估計數字. 所以在公司裏如果老闆問會計, 上個月水電費總共多少錢? 之後再加上一句, "Just give me a ballpark figure." 意思就是我只要一個大略的數字就行了. 甚至有些老美懶到就只說ballpark, 所以老闆也有可能會說, "I'll need a ballpark of the revenue last year." (我需要去年的營收的大約數字.) 你就要自己知道這個ballpark 是ballpark figure 的意思.其實很多像ballpark 這種有點俚語的講法, 你去問美國人, 我保証他們百分之九十九點九都知道ballpark 的意思. 但是有很多外國人, 不管他們的英語再流利, 不管在美國住多久, 卻還是常常會有聽不懂的狀況. 像小笨霖的指導教授是歐洲人, 但在美國也待超過十年了, 英語的流利自然是不在話下. 可是呢? 有一次我跟她說"I can only give you a ballpark." 她卻問我ballpark 是什麼意思. 我講這個小故事給各位聽的原因, 就是告訴你們拿這種俚語去跟美國人交談, 通常是沒問題的, 但是如果去跟英語同樣也很流利的老印, ABC, 或是在美國住了很久的外國人, 則不保証他們能聽得懂.4. Bottom line: We have to turn into profit by 2002.最重要的是: 我們必須在2002 年前轉虧為盈.大家看過財務報表沒? 上面是一大堆密密麻麻的數字, 告訴你公司的資產有多少, 折舊多少, 應收帳款多少. 但是這些都不是最重要的, 最重要的在最最下面那一行(bottom line), 叫淨賺(Net earnings) 告訴你這家公司總共加起來到底是賺錢還是賠錢, (這其實才是最重要的, 不是嗎?) 所以bottom line 這個字後來就變成了有「最重要的是...」的意思. 例如商場上有句名言, "In business, If you don't take care of your customers, somebody else will. And that is the bottom line." (如果你不關心你的顧客的話, 其它的人會, 這是最重要的原則. ) 另外bottom line 也有「最後的底限」,「不能再退讓的原則」的意思. 例如老闆可以告誡員工, "Bottom line: We have to ship this order by Friday." (我最後的底限是, 我們必須在星期五前運交這批貨. )5. The new CFO was sent to bring the company out of the red.這位新的財務長被派來把公司從赤字中拯救出來.中國人喜歡紅色, 所以股市大漲時盤面上都是紅通通的一片. 不過歐美國家對紅色的認知則大不相同, 紅色就表示虧損, 赤字. 像之前提到的bottom line 如果是用紅筆寫的, 那就是表示公司整體上來說是賠錢的. 相反的如果是用黑筆寫的, 則表示是賺錢的. 所以我們常可以聽到in the red 或是in the black 這樣的講法, 其實就是指公司賺不賺錢. 當然啦, 我們也可以用最簡單的講法, lose money 和make money 或是形容詞unprofitable 和profitable來表示賠錢或賺錢. 例如這家公司是賺錢的, 你可以說, "This company is in the black.", "The comapny is making money." 或是"The company is profitable." 都可以.講到這個profitable 讓我不得不提醒大家non-profit 這個字, 因為常常有人會搞錯.Non-profit 這個字指的並不是說不賺錢的, 而是說「非營利性質的」, 例如像消費者文教基金會我們就可以說他是一個non-profit organization, 非營利機構, 這種組織就不是以賺錢為目的. 但nonprofitable 的話則是指不賺錢的就等於unprofitable 或是non-profit-making.2. 6. Shelly just called in sick.Shelly 剛打電話來請病假.Call in sick 是一個在辦公室內常會用到的片語, 指的是有人打電話來說他生病了不能來上班. 有興趣聽老美講這句話的人不妨去看"What Women Want?" (男人百分百) 這部電影, 我記得他們就有用"call in sick" 這個片語. 當然啦, 這種事想也知道一定有相當的比例是偷懶而不想來上班而已, 不然就是員工找藉口集體罷工, 例如"Some workers called in sick to have a strike." (有些工人藉由集體打電話請病假來罷工.)那如果是正常的請病假(sick leave/ medical leave) 要怎麼講? 你可以說, "I need a sick leave for two days." (我需要請兩天病假.) 或是如果是因為老婆要分娩了, 想要請事假(personal leave), 你可以說, "I'm asking for a three-day paid/unpaid perso nal leave for my wife's labor." (因為我老婆要生了, 我想要請三天假.) 至於這個假是扣不扣錢? (paid/unpaid) 就看公司的政策而定了.7. I just heard that seven people are going be laid off next month.我剛聽到公司下個月要裁七位員工.最近失業率不斷上昇, 我也就順便來談談裁員的話題. 公司要裁員的講法有許多種, 其中最常見的不外是layoff 這個字(如果分開來寫: lay off 是動詞, 但合起來寫layoff 則是名詞) . 例如, "Cisco issues a profit warning, plans layoffs." (思科發佈盈餘警訊, 計劃裁員.) 當然還可以用比較口語的講法說, cut jobs 或是slash jobs, 例如上一句我們也可以說, "Cisco plans to cut/slash jobs." (思科計劃裁員.) 據路邊馬路消息說, 由於layoff 最近在英語中的出現頻率排名大幅成長, layoff 這個字將會被收錄在最新的英文常用3000 字彙當中. ^__^要是真的不幸在美國被裁員了怎麼辦? 先記住兩句話再說, 第一句是, "Whose decisio n was this?" (這是誰的決定.) 俗語說冤有頭債有主, 先問清楚了是誰動你的, 將來要把汽車輪胎放氣才知道要放哪一台. 另一句話就是, "I am between jobs." 這句話在找新工作時很好用. 人家問你現在在作什麼, 你不要呆呆地說, "I just got laid off." 多難聽啊! 你應該說, "I am between jobs." 我正好在兩個工作間的空檔. 聽起來比較委婉這可是之前剛被裁了員的好友Joseph 教我的, 他就因為很會講這句"I am between jobs." 目前已經在德州休士頓找到新工作了. :D8. (我們必須輪三班制來保持工廠的運轉.) 我想大家都知道三班制就是日夜, 小夜班和大夜班. 在英文裏日班就是day shift 或是regular shift, 小夜班是night shift. 那大夜班呢? 有一個很有趣的講法, 叫grav eyard shift. 所以如果你要說明自己上的是大夜班, 就可以這樣說, "I work on the gr aveyard shift."至於為什麼叫graveyard shift 呢? 其中有一個廣為流傳的故事是這麼說的, 在十九世紀時, 人們有時候會不小心把還活著的人當成死人埋掉. 為了避免這種悲劇發生, 所以他們在每個棺材裏都裝上電鈴, 以便讓這些意外醒來的「屍體」能夠按鈴求救. 也因此必須另外安排一位仁兄晚上時在墓地(graveyard) 裏巡查, 以便有人按鈴時能即時通知家屬. 所以大夜班後來就以此得名, 成為了graveyard shift. 至於你相不相信這種傳說呢? 就看你自己了!9. I am only a regular 9-to-5er.我只是一個平凡的朝九晚五上班族.我相信中文的「朝九晚五」這個字應該就是從英文9-to-5 這個字直接翻過來的吧? 由於上班族的工作時間多半都是很固定從早上九點到晚上五點, 所以才有9-to-5 這個用法, 指的就是很一般上下班的工作. 記得有一次跟一個在社會上己經工作多年又回來唸研究所的老美聊到他回學校唸書的動機, 他就告訴我, "I don't want to work 9 to 5 f or the rest of my life." (我不想一輩子都作朝九晚五的工作.) 另外像這種上班族也可以自稱是一個9-to-5er, 也就是指作這種朝九晚五工作的上班族. 但是像小笨霖我呢?我就該自稱是10-to-3er 了. (我當然沒那麼認真凌晨三點回家, 而是下午三點就回家睡午覺了!)10. I refuse to work overtime during the weekend.我拒絕在週末時加班.英文裏加班叫work overtime. 例如別人喊你今晚出去吃飯, 你說, "Sorry, I have to work overtime." 就是告訴他, 很抱歉, 我今晚要加班. 不過有趣的是, 除了「加班」可以叫overtime, 加班費也可以叫overtime. 例如你可以大聲地告訴老闆, "You have t o pay me overtime!"
