模块综合测评(一)(时间:100分钟;满分:120分)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)ALast night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg,a distance of about eighty miles. It was late.Several times I got stuck behind a slowmoving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient. At one point along an open road,I came to a crossing with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now,but as I drove near the light,it turned red and I made a stop.I looked left, right and behind me.Nothing.Not a car,no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it's part of a contract (契约) we all have with each other. It's not only the law,but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.Trust is our first inclination (倾向).Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us.The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互) trust, not distrust. We do what we say we'll do;we show up when we say we'll show up;and we pay when we say we'll pay.We trusteach other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.1.Why did the author get impatient while driving?A.He was lonely on the road.B.He was slowed down by a truck.C.He got tired of driving too long.D.He came across too many traffic lights.2.What was the author's immediate action when the traffic light turned red?A.Stopping still.B.Driving through it.C.Looking around for other cars.D.Checking out for traffic police.3.The event made the author strongly believe that .A.traffic rules may be unnecessaryB.doubting others is human natureC.patience is important to driversD.a society needs mutual trust4.Why was the author proud of himself?A.He kept his promise.B.He held back his anger.C.He followed his inclination.D.He made a right decision.BchimpanzeeMost people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example,a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猎食动物)gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a br oken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it.But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them.So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don't make nests.Instead, they get into other birds' nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.Chimpanzees,or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out itshand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas,it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.As children,ma ny of us learn the saying “You can't fool Mot her Nature.” But maybe you can't trust her,either.5.A plover protects its young from a predator by .A.getting closer to its youngB.driving away the adult predatorC.leaving its young in another nestD.pretending to be injured6.By “Chimpanzees,or chimps, can also be sneaky” (Paragraph 5 ), the author means .A.chimps are ready to attack othersB.chimps are sometimes dishonestC.chimps are jealous of the winnersD.chimps can be selfish too7.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.8.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Do animals lie?B.Does Mother Nature fool animals?C.How do animals learn to lie?D.How does honesty help animals survive?CStop Spam! When I first got an email account ten years ago,I received communications only from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my email,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.If we want email to continue to be useful,we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件)a crime. If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much puter programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of emails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products,individual(个人的)e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails.Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time? This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a panies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other.Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively.Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are,in the end, passed on to the consumer. For these reasons,I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spam.Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people.Email is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.9.What does the underlined word “correspondence” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.messages B.ideasC.connections D.programs10.According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?A.Companies rely on email for communications.B.More people in the world communicate by email.C.Many computer viruses contain spam emails.D.More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam.11.According to Paragraph 3,who is the final victim of spam?A.The business. B.The advertiser.C.The employee. D.The consumer.12.What is the purpose of the text?A.To inform. B.To educate.C.To persuade. D.To instruct.DYou are the collector in the gallery of your life. You collect. You might not mean to but you do.One out of three people collects tangible(有形的) things such as cats, photos and noisy toys. These are among some 40 collections that are being shown at “The Museum Of”—the first of several new museums which, over the next two years, will exhibit the objects accumulated by unknown collectors. In doing so,they will promote a popular culture of museums, not what museums normally represent. Some of the collections are fairly common records, model houses.Others are strangely beautiful branches that have fallen from trees, for example. But they all reveal (显露) a lot of things;ask someone what they collect and their answers will tell you who they are.Others on the way include “The Museum of Collectors”and “The Museum of Me”.These new ones,it is hoped, will build on the success of “The Museum Of”.The thinkers behind the project want to explore why people collect, and what it means to do so.They hope that visitors who may not have considered themselves collectors will begin to see they, too, collect. Some collectors say they started or stopped making collections at important points :the beginning or end of adolescence —“it's a growing-up thing;you stop when you grow up,”says one.Other painful times are mentioned, such as the end of a relationship. For time and life can seem so uncontrollable that a steady serial(顺序排列的)arrangement is comforting.13.How will the new museums promote a popular culture of museums?A.By collecting more tangible things.B.By showing what ordinary people have collected.C.By correcting what museums normally represent.D.By accumulating 40 collections two years from now.14.Which of the following is an aim of the new museums?A.To help people sell their collections.B.To encourage more people to collect.C.To study the significance of collecting.D.To find out why people visit museums.15.According to the last paragraph, people may stop collecting when they .A.become adultsB.feel happy with lifeC.are ready for a relationshipD.feel time to be uncontrollable【导学号:75790043】Ⅱ.阅读填句(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)In any business, advertising plays a vital part in,making any business prosper, which is why a lot of businessmen struggle to make their business advertisement the best and of high quality. 16 One of the most cost-saving ways for a businessman to advertise is through using a business card. This little card makes a great difference to business when used properly.17 You can order it in great numbers and still save a lot of money. To save even more, you can make your own cards for your business; your own unique idea about the design will surely attract the attention of your target market. There are printing companies which design attractive cards of good quality according to your requirements and you can easily find out these companies online.18 People will surely give a second look at your card and keep it for future use.Do not give your business card to just any person that you see in street. scientists led by a Yale University evolutionary biologist. But research suggests that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival, perhaps because of differences in women's fertility(能生育性).The team examined 2,238 women in Framingham,Massachusetts, the US and studied the medical histories of some 14,000 residents since 1948.They found that strong, slightly fat women tend to have more children. And if this trend were to continue for the next 10 generations,by 2,409 the average woman would be 2 cm shorter,1 kg heavier, and have a healthier heart. That rate of evolution is pretty similar to what we see in plants and animals.Humans_don't_seem_to_be_any_exception,the team said.Other recent genetic research backs up that belief. One study by John Hawks,an anthropologist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, found that some 1,800 human gene variations (变异) are common in recent generations because of evolution.Among the changes are mutations (突变) that allow people to digest milk or resist malaria(疟疾)and others that govern brain development.Since the Industrial Revolution, modern humans have grown taller and stronger. It's easy to assume that evolution is making humans fitter. But according to anthropologist Peter McAllister, the contemporary male has evolved physically into “the sorriest example of male ever on the planet”.An average Neanderthal woman,McAllister notes, could have beat Arnold Schwarzenegger in an armwrestling (腕力) match. And early Australian Aborigines could easily defeat Usain Bolt in a 100-m dash. However,Douglas Ewbank,of the University of Pennsylvania, says that cultural factors tend to have a much greater impact than natural selection on future generations,so people tend to ignore evolution's effects. And,despite evidence indicating evolution still works,Steve Jones,an evolutionary biologist at University College London, thinks that the impact of evolution on humans is not the most important.“What makes humans what we are is in our minds,in our society, and not in our evolution,”said Jones.36.What does the underlined sentence “Humans don't seem to be any exception” imply?A.Plants and animals are evolving faster than humans.B.Evolution doesn't work in humans any longer.C.The rate of evolution in plants and animals also applies to humans.D.Humans are unique in their evolution.37.Why is the recent genetic research quoted in the fifth paragraph?A.To support the belief that mankind is still evolving.B.To show human gene variations are common in recent generations.C.To prove modern humans have grown fitter.D.To suggest that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival.38.According to the passage,we can infer that Arnold Schwarzenegger________.A.used to be a famous actorB.is an American governorC.is very weakD.is very strong39.According to Douglas Ewbank, which of the following factors plays a greater part in the future generations?A.Culture. B.Evolution.C.Natural selection. D.Genetic mutations.40.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Mankind is still evolving.B.Women will get fatter.C.The history of human evolution.D.Future women tend to have more children.BProviding a high-quality education for all children is important to America's economic future.President Obama has decided to provide every child with access to a complete and competitive education, from cradle (摇篮)through career. The years before a child reaches kindergarten are among the most critical in his or her life to influence learning. The President will urge states to introduce high standards across all publicly funded early learning settings, develop new programs to improve opportunities and outcomes, engage parents in their child's early learning and development, and improve the early education workforce.President Obama will reform America's public schools to deliver a 21st century education that will prepare all children for success in the new global workplace. He will push to end the use of ineffective,“off-the-shelf”tests,and support new,state-of-the-art assessment and responsibility systems that provide timely and useful information about the learning and progress of students.Teachers are the single most important resource to children's learning.President Obama will invest in a national effort to reward outstanding teachers, while enlisting the best and brightest in the field of teaching. And he will challenge State and school districts to remove ineffective teachers from the classroom. The President believes that investment in education must be accompanied by reform and innovation (创新).He supports the expansion of high-quality charter schools (特许学校).He has challenged States to lift limits that stop growth among successful charter schools and has encouraged strict responsibility for all charter schools.President Obama has decided to ensure that America will regain its lost ground and have the highest proportion of students graduating from college in the world by 2020.The President believes that regardless of educational path after high school, all Americans should enroll in at least one year of higher education or job training to better prepare our workforce for the 21st century economy. To reach these goals, the President has decided to increase higher education access and success by restructuring and greatly expanding college financial aid, while making federal programs simpler, more reliable, and more efficient for students.41.What's President Obama's idea about education?A.To offer all children a full and good education.B.To urge states to introduce high standards.C.To enable every child to succeed in a global economy.D.To increase higher education access.42.What does the underlined word “critical” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Very formal. two great characters.Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective who appeared in 33 of Agatha Christie's novels. He is best-known for his moustache.Poirot thinks logically and likes order. He examines the crime scene in detail and claims that every crime can be solved.Da v id Suchet as Hercule PoirotAs time went on Agatha Christie became tired of her Belgian detective and wanted to get rid of him.But he was very popular among her readers. When he died in “Curtain” in 1978 he became the only fictional character to get an obituary (讣告) in the Ne w York Times.Agatha Christie's other well-known character was Miss.Marple,an old woman who wants to be an amateur (业余的) detective. She likes knitting, walking around the neighbourhood and sheobserves things very carefully. She became famous for solving cases where the police failed. In contrast to Hercule Poirot,Christie was very fond of Miss Marple.Almost all of Agatha Christie's novels are detective novels. They focus on English people of the middle and upper classes.Usually the detective comes across a murder scene by chance or is called by a friend who may be involved. He or she questions the suspects, examines the crime scene carefully and gives the reader clues so that they may have a chance to solve the crime themselves. In the course of the story one,or even a few,of the suspects usually die. Finally the detective gets all the suspects together and gives away information that not everyone knows, until the real murderer is revealed. In some of Agatha Christie's stories the murderer escapes justice;sometimes they get killed.Twice the murderer turns out to be the narrator (叙述者) of the story.46.Which of the following descriptions is in disagreement with Hercule Poirot?A.Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective writer who wrote many detective novels.B.People can recognize him by his famous moustache.C.Agatha Christie's readers are very fond of the character Hercule Poirot.D.He,as a character of Agatha top finding of the study is that today, even with people becoming increasingly mature about modern technology, the TV screen still dominates (控制) their lives and continues to take up the greatest amount of viewing time. The data suggests that computer usage has replaced radio as the second most popular media activity. For the study, observers followed 350 participants and recorded their exposure to different screens: traditional TV screens, computers, mobile phones and other screens. They were followed from the time they woke up in the morning till they went to bed at night.Young people under 18 were not included in the study. The study discovered that the average amount of screen time for subjects in all age groups was amazingly similar, at more than 8.5 hours of media exposure a day.Surprisingly, people between the ages of 45 and 54, spent on average an extra hour in front of the screens every day.Among other interesting findings, it showed that young people were not the only ones who distributed (分配) their attention between screens.People in their mid 20s and 30s were found to spend the most time watching DVD or VCR videos, and those in their 40s and early 50s spent the most time surfing the Web and sending e-mails.People who were over 55 years of age mainly preferred live television. The data showed that the younger audiences, those between 18 and 24 years of age, mostly college students and people who have just started working, watched the smallest amount of live TV of any age group, spent the most time sending text messages, and watched the most online and, at times, all of us struggle with being patient.Sometimes a certain situation or a certain person just pushes our buttons, making it much more difficult for us to remain patient.Once you lose patience, things tend to go wrong. It becomes harder to concentrate, and it becomes harder to be polite to other people.Learning to be patient takes time and it takes patience to learn to be patient.Patience is acquired as you acquire wisdom, and wisdom is the child of experience. No one is born wise, just as no one is born patient. As you learn and grow and experience things in life, you become wiser and learn how to interact with difficult kinds of people. For example, you start your first job in a big office, and you don't really know how to work with lots of people. This is normal, as you have never had the experience of working in an office before. At first, it might be difficult to understand your job.You might even lose patience, but over time you'll be able to interact with other people with more confidence and patience. When someone at work disagrees with you, it will make you flustered. However, with experience, you'll learn how to present your opinion clearly. You'll be less likely to become bothered when presented with different situations. The more patience you have, the better you'll cope in various situations.Though it might be difficult, you should try to be patient in life. This will help you in nearly all situations. You must keep in mind that patience comes with experience and wisdom.Age doesn't always mean that someone is wise, and wisdom doesn't always 高中英语(牛津译林版,必修五,全国卷)模块综合测评(一)

模块综合测评 (一)(时间: 100 分钟;满分: 120 分)Ⅰ.阅读理解 (共 15 小题;每题 2 分,满分 30 分)ALast night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg ,a distance of about eighty miles. It was late.Several times I got stuck behind a slow - moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left , and I became increasingly impatient. At one point along an open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light.I was alone on the road by now,but as I drove near the light , it turned red and I made a stop.I looked left, right and behind me.Nothing.Not a car,no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light.I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me.I think I stopped because it's part of a contract (契约 ) we all have with each other. It's not only the law,but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.Trust is our first inclination ( 偏向 ).Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us.The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(互相 ) trust, not distrust. We do what we say we'll do;we show up when we say we'll show up;and we pay when we say we'll pay.We trust each other in these matters, and we're angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.1.Why did the author get impatient while driving?A .He was lonely on the road.B.He was slowed down by a truck.C.He got tired of driving too long.D.He came across too many traffic lights.2.What was the author's immediate action when the traffic light turned red?A .Stopping still.B.Driving through it.C. Looking around for other cars.D.Checking out for traffic police.3.The event made the author strongly believe that.A .traffic rules may be unnecessaryB.doubting others is human natureC.patience is important to driversD.a society needs mutual trust4.Why was the author proud of himself?A .He kept his promise.B.He held back his anger.C.He followed his inclination.D.He made a right decision.BchimpanzeeMost people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can't talk ,but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive. Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example,a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young.Whena predator(猎食动物 )gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away fromthe nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the“ hurt ” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.Another kind of bird ,the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays are also thieves. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love ,such as bananas,it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way ,other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.As children, many of us learn the saying“You can't fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can't trust her,either.5.A plover protects its young from a predator by.A .getting closer to its youngB.driving away the adult predatorC.leaving its young in another nestD.pretending to be injured6.By“Chimpanzees,or chimps, can also be sneaky”(Paragraph 5 ), the author means.A .chimps are ready to attack othersB.chimps are sometimes dishonestC.chimps are jealous of the winnersD.chimps can be selfish too7.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A .Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.8.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A .Do animals lie?B.Does Mother Nature fool animals?C.How do animals learn to lie?D.How does honesty help animals survive?CStop Spam! When I first got an e- mail account ten years ago, I received communications only from family ,friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e-mail,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.If we want e - mail to continue to be useful ,we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件 )a crime. If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem willcertainly get much puter programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e - mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam tosell their products, individual( 个人的 )e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails.Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoyingamount of spam each time? This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam e-mails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of apanies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other.Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively.Such a situation resultsin a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair theirnetworks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are,in the end, passed on to the consumer. For these reasons,I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spam.Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people.E- mail is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.9.What does the underlined word“correspondencein”Paragraph 1 probably mean?A .messages B.ideasC.connections D.programs10.According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?A .Companies rely on e- mail for communications.B.More people in the world communicate by e- mail.C.Many computer viruses contain spam e-mails.D.More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam.11.According to Paragraph 3,who is the final victim of spam?A .The business.B.The advertiser.C.The employee.D.The consumer.12.What is the purpose of the text?A .To inform.B.To educate.C.To persuade.D.To instruct.DGordon Brown was born in Scotland in 1951. Living with other students can be a wonderful experience. Here are a few tips for student accommodations that can help ensure a great experience and build lifelong friendships:Screen your roommates carefully if you are given a bining the living spaces of several students into one location can be an exciting and rewarding experience for the outgoing students. If you are on the shy side,or prefer a quiet group to study with, pick quieter roommates.Divide the bills evenly(平等地).Some students are far less responsible than their roommates and tend to let their part of the finance slide.Dissatisfaction is quick to build when everyone has to pay the bill for a fellow student who can’t seem to pay his/her share of the money. Carry your part of the load.Everyone has to clean the bathroom and the kitchen.Don’t avoid your part of responsibility.Student accommodations can get messy and it involves everyone to keep them tidy and healthy.Think about someone else before you think about yourself.Put your roommates interests above your own.Life will be enjoyable when everyone is concerned about the feelings of each other.Be open and honest.Hostilities(敌意) and frustrations may cause problems that can’t be fixed.Everyone brings different standards and expectations to group living and it’s in everyone’s best interest to put them into the open.Disagreements can be managed more warmly when you are willing to be both open and listen to others.1.When it comes to the bills, every member is advised to .A.foot the bill for a fellow studentB.let his/her part of the finances slideC.pay his/her own share of moneyD.take more responsibility than others2.The role “carry your part of the load” means every room member should.A.avoid making too much noiseB.take turns to keep the room tidyC.take care of others when they are illD.avoid staying up and oversleeping3.To be a good member, one should learn to according to the passage.A.choose his/her roommates at randomB.balance his/her interests with othersC.express his/her disagreement openly and honestlyD.tolerate different standards and expectationsThe Hunan Satellite TV (HNTV) show “Where are we going, Dad?” is a big hit. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the “how to be a good father”. As the yo ung parents today are too busy to take care of their children, this new form of“Lost on the way”played by nanny (保姆式的) daddy and cute kids triggered(触发)a lot of people’s emotional resonance(共鸣). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children. The TV shows like “Children are hard to support!”, “Where are we going, Dad?”, “hot mom” and “cute kids” are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents’ confusion in children’s education and the appeal for the balance between career and family. In real life, on the one hand, the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand, they continue to do so. The data collected by HNTV show that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34. We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers. In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility for raising a child. The participation of mother in the children’s education is also very low.It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education, and where the parents will guide their children to go that “Where are we going, Dad?” shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independentpersonality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go, and society will go where the children go.4.Which of the following can be inferred in the passage?A.Parents shouldn’t entirely leave the education of children to the old.B.36% of the audience of the program are female aged from 25-34.C.The program shows us the confusion where the parents and children will go to play. D.In a modern family it is often mothers who are responsible for raising a child.5.In raising a child in modern society, parents should ________.A.play computer games with their childrenB.break down the barrier between children and teachersC.balance well between family and careerD.keep their children at home to avoid socializing6.What attitude towards modern family education does the author express in the passage? A.Optimistic. B.Proud.C.Negative. D.Worried7.Which one is the best title of the passage?A.Confusion behind “Where are we going, dad?”B.Modern Education is ImportantC.Nanny Daddy and Cute KidsD.New Problems in Modern Children’s Education阅读理解。

scientists led by a Yale University evolutionary biologist. But according to anthropologist Peter McAllister, the contemporary male has ev olved physically into “the sorriest example of male ever on the planet”.An average Neanderthal woman,McAllister notes, could have beat Arnold Schwarzenegger in an armwrestling (腕力) match. And early Australian Aborigines could easilydefeat Usain Bolt in a 100-m dash. However,Douglas Ewbank,of the University of Pennsylvania, says that cultural factors tend to have a much greater impact than natural selection on future generations,so people tend to ignore evolution's effects. And,despite evidence indicating evolution still works,Steve Jones,an evolutionary biologist at University College London, thinks that the impact of evolution on humans is not the most important.“What makes humans what we are is in our minds,in our society, and not in our evolution,”said Jones.36.What does the underlined sentence “Humans don't seem to be any exception” imply?A.Plants and animals are evolving faster than humans.B.Evolution doesn't work in humans any longer.C.The rate of evolution in plants and animals also applies to humans.D.Humans are unique in their evolution.37.Why is the recent genetic research quoted in the fifth paragraph?A.To support the belief that mankind is still evolving.B.To show human gene variations are common in recent generations.C.To prove modern humans have grown fitter.D.To suggest that the natural selection process is no longer driven by survival.38.According to the passage,we can infer that Arnold Schwarzenegger________.A.used to be a famous actorB.is an American governorC.is very weakD.is very strong39.According to Douglas Ewbank, which of the following factors plays a greater part in the future generations?A.Culture. solving cases where the police failed. In the course of thestory one,or even a few,of the suspects usually die. Finally the detective gets all top finding of the study is that today, even with people becoming increasingly mature about modern technology, the TV screen still dominates (控制) their lives and continues to take upthe greatest amount of viewing time. The data showed that the younger audiences, those between 18 and 24 years of age, mostly college students and people who have just started working, watched the smallest amount of live TV of any age group, spent the most time sending text messages, and watched the most online video.Title: American adults' exposure to 51.________A survey the largest, most 52.____ studyContents of the survey●the 53.________:350●time they were followed: from waking up inthe morning and, at times, all of us struggle with being patient.Sometimes a certain situation or a certain person just pushes our buttons, making it much more difficult for us to remain patient.Once you lose patience, things tend to go wrong. You must keep in mind that patience comes with experience and wisdom.Age doesn't always mean that someone is wise, and wisdom doesn't always mean that someone is patient, though the two often go hand in hand.61.What would happen if you failed to be patient? However, if you have never read the book but instead choose to see the film version, you might think you were seeing a newage war movie meant for adults rather than children.Let's look at “Where the Wild Things Are”for further discussion. The story centers around a lonely eightyearold boy named Max, who sails away to an island.Creatures living there declare Max their king. What an amazing piece of children's literature! A treasure for every child's library. Yet, children were crying in the movie theatre. Owls were falling from the sky, chicken's arms were being torn off, and a child was running around a dark abandoned world fighting evil as the only human. It was almost as if Hollywood could not imagine children enjoying a movie for its basicliterature content.Hollywood might be right. But more and more its audiences are complaining that there is an increased amount of violence in children's stories today than in the past. While there appears to be a trend in our society to make more violence more accessible to younger children, books and literature are generally an exception. I truly believe that children's literature has become more vivid, and more colorful. This is a great treasure for the children, and is certainly not violent. What has changed the children's stories of today is not the writers, but the film industry. In some way, children's literature is just being strangely twisted.I wonder how much influence the author have over this.8.The text is mainly about________.A.two good books for childrenB.how a book is adapted into a filmC.whether children should go to moviesD.whether children's literature is getting more violent9.It can be inferred that the film “Where the Wild Things Are” is________.A.moving B.frighteningC.interesting D.amazing10.According to the text, the author thinks that______________.A. the film industry's treatment of children's literature is wrongB. writers should provide more colorful works for childrenC.there is an increase in violence in children's literatureD.children should read books rather than see films11.How does the text mainly develop?A.By inferring.B.By giving explanations.C.By providing examples.D.By making comparisons.【导学号:35362044】DThe media provides us with the observations and experiences from which we build up our personal understanding of the world and how it works.Much of our view of reality is based on media messages. The media,to a great extent, gives us our sense of reality.Freedom of the media carries with it certain responsibilities ofhonesty, fairness, accuracy and accountability. The power of the media to create and destroy human values comes with great responsibility. The media is powerful in the political system, having great influence on politics and on forming social change. The power is to decide who will communicate what to whom.Television can greatly influence the election of a national leader on the basis of his or her image.Professional journalists do have a code of ethics(道德标准).Journalists make a judgment about what's safe and appropriate to report, which often involves difficult choices.German sociolog ist Max Weber distinguishes between“ethics of conviction”and “ethics of responsibility”.According to the latter (ethics of responsibility),journalists must take into account the foreseeable consequences of their reporting, and the impact it will have on society. The former,on the other hand, asks journalists to tell the truth, regardless of the consequences.According to Weber, both ideas of ethics should be considered.Without doubt, information is power, and the big owners of the mass media are very powerful people.Television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and websites are, largely, owned and controlled by profitmaking businesses. It is not strange that their ideas will get promoted at times. It is my view that such power and responsibility should never be left in the hands of a few.I believe it is our responsibility as concerned citizens to make sure we are not merely passive viewers, readers or listeners.Together we can have a huge influence on the media by making our views known.12.What's the first paragraph mainly about?A.Responsibilities of the media.B.Influence of the media.C.History of the media.D.Problems of the media.13.We can learn from the third paragraph that________.A.the media is more interested in politics than other fieldsB.forming social change is the main duty of the mediaC.the great power of the media is controlled by political figuresD.the media can affect politics by forming political figures' images14.As for“ethics of conviction” and “ethics of responsibility”,Max Weber thinks________.A.most journalists don't have the right ethicsB.it is near impossible for journalists to obey both sets of ethicsC.the two sets of ethics shouldn't be regarded as opposed to each otherD.journalists shouldn't be limited by these ethics15.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.The mass media should be owned by the government.B.The media industry has developed into a new age in recent years.C.In most cases, journalists are more powerful than the owners of the media.D.The media tends to promote the ideas of their owners sometimes.Ⅱ.阅读填句(共5小题;每小题2分;满分10分)Traditional teen bullying tends to decline with age, peaking during middle school and decreasing during high school. Sometimes, people end up getting hurt。

Most problems with friendships come up because people are just too selfish to care about the things that their friends need. They care about their own needs much more, which makes it hard for friendships to work. However, being selfish is part of human nature.A person is put together in order to take care of himself and his own needs, not necessarily those needs of other people.Even though being selfish is something that all humans are born with,it is something that everyone should guard against。

The best thing to remember when you are a friend to anyone is that you need to treat your friend the same way as you’d like to be treated. This is wonderful advice for a friendship, because it is really the only way to make sure that you are giving your friend everything you would want to be given in a friendship.Whenever you have a question about how you should treat a friend,it is easy to find an answer simply by asking yourself what you would like your friend to do for you,if he or she is in your shoes.Even if you’re always thinking about how you'd like to be treated, and your friends are too, there are issues that come up from time to time in each friendship, and it is important to understand how to deal with these issues so that you can build stronger and healthier friendships.Issues like friends getting boyfriends or girlfriends and not spending enough time with their friends,or even friends finding new friends and leaving old friends behindare issues that will probably come up with one or more of your friendships. It is important to know how to deal with these issues so that you can keep your friends and make new ones。

How? It pretends to have a broken wing. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner's hand and start fighting again.Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas,it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don't hear them, and they don't need to share their food.As children, many of us learn the saying “You can't fool Mother Nature.”But maybe you can't trust her,either.40.A plover protects its young from a predator by ______.A.getting closer to its youngB.driving away the adult predatorC.leaving its young in another nestD.pretending to be injured41.By “Chimpanzees,or chimps, can also be sneaky” (Paragraph 5 ), the author means ________.A.chimps are ready to attack othersB.chimps are sometimes dishonestC.chimps are jealous of the winnersD.chimps can be selfish too42.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.Some chimps lower their cry to keep food away from others.B.The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner's hand.C.Cuckoos fool their adoptive parents by making no nests.D.Some clever scrub jays often steal their food back.43.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?A.Do animals lie?B.Does Mother Nature fool animals?C.How do animals learn to lie?D.How does honesty help animals survive?CStop Spam! When I first got an email account ten years ago,I received communicationsonly from family, friends, and colleagues. Now it seems that every time I check my e mail,I have an endless series of advertisements and other correspondence that do not interest me at all.If we want e-mail to continue to be useful,we need specific laws that make spamming(发送垃圾邮件)a crime. If lawmakers do not do something soon to prohibit spam, the problem will certainly get much puter programs allow spammers to send hundreds of millions of e-mails almost instantly. As more and more advertisers turn to spam to sell their products,individual(个人的)e-mail boxes are often flooded with spam e-mails.Would people continue to use e-mail if they had to deal with an annoying amount of spam each time? This problem is troubling for individuals and companies as well. Many spam emails contain computer viruses that can shut down the entire network of a panies rely on e-mail for their employees to communicate with each other.Spam frequently causes failures in their local communications networks, and their employees are thus unable to communicate effectively.Such a situation results in a loss of productivity and requires companies to repeatedly repair their networks. These computer problems raise production costs of companies, which are,in the end, passed on to the consumer. For these reasons,I believe that lawmakers need to legislate (立法) against spam.Spammers should be fined, and perhaps sent to prison if they continue to disturb people.Email is a tool which helps people all over the world to communicate conveniently, but spam is destroying this convenience.44.What does the underlined word “correspondence” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A.messages B.ideasC.connections D.programs45.According to the text, what is the major cause of the flooding spam?A.Companies rely on email for communications.B.More people in the world communicate by e-mail.C.Many computer viruses contain spam emails.D.More advertisers begin to promote sales through spam.46.According to Paragraph 3,who is the final victim of spam?A.The business. B.The advertiser.C.The employee. D.The consumer.47.What is the purpose of the text?A.To inform. For time and life can seem so uncontrollable that a steady serial(顺序排列的)arrangement is comforting.48.How will the new museums promote a popular culture of museums?A.By collecting more tangible things.B.By showing what ordinary people have collected.C.By correcting what museums normally represent.D.By accumulating 40 collections two years from now.49.Which of the following is an aim of the new museums?A.To help people sell their collections.B.To encourage more people to collect.C.To study the significance of collecting.D.To find out why people visit museums.50.According to the last paragraph, people may stop collecting when they ________.A.become adultsB.feel happy with lifeC.are ready for a relationshipD.feel time to be uncontrollableⅣ.任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后图表中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

AInternational model United Nations meetings are events at which high school and college students from all over the world play the role of UN representatives. These meetings are largely based on the real United Nations. They are even divided into many of the same groups, such as the UN Security Council and the World Health Organization. The events allow students to develop and strengthen skills that are important for international careers, such as politics or international law.One of the main goals of the meetings is to develop effective(有效的) munication skills. Because of this, students take part in many presentations(陈述), debates, and written research tasks. For example, at the end of every meeting, each student group writes a suggestion for solving one major world problem that they have learned about through their research tasks. These groups then discuss their suggestion with the rest of the student representatives in order to get them to support it. They may also discuss and solve invented problems, such as imaginary wars or natural disasters. Such activities challenge students’ abilities to express their thoughts in a clear, thoughtful way.In addition to working on basic munication, students at the meetings try to express themselves in polite ways that help to solve problems. This is perhaps the most difficult task for real UN delegates(代表), so model UN organizers put great importance on it. The organizers strongly encourage students to try to understand the ideas of others, consider their feelings, and agree on solutions. The meetings are also designed to help students bee more openminded. Students often play the role of representatives for countries other than their own. This encourages them to learn more about other cultures and to think about important problems in different ways. While pretending to be from a different country, students are receiving a lot of ideas and information that they would not normally consider. Usually, they e away with a much better understanding of people in different cultures. This experience often gives them an advantage over schoolmates who only learn about world events and international relations in traditional classrooms.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

active job searches and less likely to drop out of the labor pool when compared to those who do not have access to the Internet, said the Phoenix Center.Using census (人口普查)data from 2007, the study found that unemployed workers who use broadband, whether at home or a public facility, are at least 50 percent less likely to give up on their job than those who lack such access.Discouragement was cited by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as a major reason for an increase in the rate of unemployment in 2010.As of December 2009, a large number of American workers have given up looking for a job because of the thought that no jobs are available.According to the Phoenix Center, the new study provides important insights for policymakers at a time of economic crisis, when unemployment rates are extremely high, which now is more than 17 percent. The US Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics, which carries the responsibility for the government's monthly data on employed and unemployed individuals, estimates that adding “discouraged workers”,who had given up looking for work, would increase the current US unemployment rate above the frequently reported 10 percent level.By connecting American people to jobs and information about how to better find work, use ofthe Internet gives them hope and encourages the frustrated unemployed to keep on looking even when job prospects are dim, said Lawrence J.Spiwak, president of the Phoenix Center.“These new findings suggest that broadband connectivity can contribute to economic recovery,” Mr.Spiwak added. The study has demonstrated that there are several reasons why the Internet helps keep the jobless from quitting on their job searches such as the inexpensiveness of using the Internet to search for information about job opportunities and salaries, as well as the emotional and other types of support unemployed individuals receive by means of the Internet. The study found evidence that the unemployed are more likely to be discouraged when they do not surf the Web, and this evidence suggests that support and information obtained from the Internet significantly reduce the chances that they might feel there are no jobs, or no jobs for which they could qualify. The study also highlights the benefits and importance of community broadband centers to assist those who do not have Internet access at home.36.What do we know from the passage?A.Researchers for the study analyzed census data of the last ten years.B.People who lack Internet access are less likely to quit on their job searches.C.People can learn how to better find a job during economic crisis by using the Internet.D.Many workers give up looking for jobs because they don't qualify for any jobs.37.What important insights does this new study provide for policymakers?A.The Internet is an effective means of looking for a job for the unemployed.B.Making the Internet access available is beneficial to economic recovery.C.It is necessary to help jobless people keep on searching when job prospects are bad.D.Teaching people how to surf the Internet will decrease the unemployment rate.38.Which of the following is NOT an advantage of looking for a job on the Internet?A.Offering information about jobs.B.Helping to save money.C.Giving encouragement in spirit.D.Offering chances for increased salaries.39.According to the passage, people who lack Internet access at home can go to________.A. anyone who has Internet accessB.the US Labor Department's Bureau of Labor StatisticsC.the Phoenix CenterD.community broadband centers40.In which part is this passage possibly from if it is taken from a newspaper?A.Science. B.Culture.C.Economy. D.IT.BIf you know the following fact, you'll understand why many people suffer from foot problems: The average person walks the equivalent of three times around the earth in a lifetime. That is enormous wear_and_tear on the 26 bones, 33 joints and more than 100 muscles that make up the foot.In a recent survey for the American Podiatric Medical Association, 53 percent of respondents reported foot pain so severe that it affected their daily function. On average, people develop pain in their 60s, but it can start as early as the 20s and 30s.And usually women give care to their feet while men don't.“A lot of people think foot pain is part of the aging process and accept it, and walk with pain,” said Dr.Andrew Shapiro.Though some foot problems are inevitable, their progress can be slowed. The following questions will help you assess whether you should take more preventive action as you age.Do you have flat feet or high arches (足弓)? Either puts feet at risk.Shoes that support the arch and heel can help flat feet.People with high arches should look for roomy shoes and softer padding (衬垫) to absorb the shock.Proper exercises also strengthen muscles supporting the foot.Do your shoes fit? In the survey, more than 34 percent of men said they could not remember the last time their feet were measured.20 percent of women said that once a week they wore shoes that hurt, and 8 percent wore painful shoes daily.Feet flatten and lengthen with age, so if you still stick to the shoe size you wore at the age of 21,get your feet measured.Do you walk? Putting more mileage(里程) on your feet is the best way to exercise the muscles and keep them healthy.41.The underlined phrase “wear and tear” in Paragraph 1 probably means“________”.A.a surprising experienceB.an unimaginable distanceC.damage due to continuous useD.a contribution to the feet42.What do we know from the passage?A. The population of men and women who have foot problems is similar.B.Walking as little as possible can protect your feet from pain.C.More than half of the respondents have serious foot problems.D.53% of people develop foot pain in their 60s.43.Compared with men, women________.A.have a long walk each dayB.take good care of their feetC.have a slow foot aging processD.are likely to have foot problems44.Which of the following statements best explains foot pain?A.Not all of it can be avoided.B.People can't slow its process.C.Walking more will stop foot pain.D.Preventive actions can't work well.45.If your feet are 26 cm long at 23, what is the probable length of your feet when you are 43?A.25 cm. B.25.2 cm.C.26 cm. D.26.2 cm.CBeing a fashion model is a more challenging career than many people think, because you have lots of things to be aware of like maintaining your perfect figure and competing with many beautiful and attractive models.A famous company would probably choose the perfect model for its products and if you get chosen then maybe you can consider yourself a super model. Some super models are as popular as famous actors and actresses.Let's talk about qualifications to become a fashion model. You should be between 15 and 22 years old, though probably closer to 15.Models don't have careers that last as long as doctors, so agencies tend to want to invest their time in someone young. You also have to consider your height.Being tall, long-legged, and thin is the most acceptable. At least 5′8″ in height and of average weight, which for a model is 108—125 pounds. These characteristics are partly aesthetic (美的) and partly practical. There are always exceptions to the rule, of course —Kate Moss is 5′7″and Gabrielle Reece is a giant 6′3″—but, in general, the closer you are to the industry criteria, the better your chances.Aside from height requirements, models are required to have good skin, great teeth, nice smile, healthy hair, and must be well dressed.Models must also be highly photogenic, able to do a variety of poses and expressions and take direction well.It is possible to have a bad skin condition but as long as you are able to keep it under control, such issues can be fixed using Photoshop. However, the clearer your complexion (肤色) is, the better. There are many types of models, such as editorial fashion models, commercial models, fitness models, and catalog models.Every type has its own criteria. That is why I believe that every person, who is inspired to become a model, has the chance as long as they meet the criteria. This could be your career, if that is what you want out of life.46.What's the BEST title for the passage?A.Modeling is a challenging careerB.Height requirements for a fashion modelC.Different types of models in societyD.Things to be aware of as a model47.If you get chosen by a famous company as a model for a certain product,________.A. you will become a model for other companies soonB.you are sure to be more famous than actors and actressesC.your career as a model will be prolongedD.it means you are competitive among all the models48.What are the qualifications for becoming an outstanding fashion model?a.Being able to do a variety of poses and expressionsb.Having a good figurec.Being less than 25 years oldd.Having good skin, great teeth and healthy haire.Having beautiful eyes and long legsA.a,b,e B.a,b,dC.b,d,e D.a,c,d49.We can infer from the passage that________.A.a person who is taller than others finds it easier to become a modelB.famous models are all at least 5′8″ in heightC.not all famous models are 108—125 poundsD.people with bad skin conditions can't become a model50.A person who wants to school to school.Students might be able to choose whatever housing they can find.Or they might have to live in a dormitory(寝室),at least for the first year.Dorms come in all sizes.A building may house a small number of students or many hundreds. Some have suites. Each suite has several bedrooms,a common living area and a bathroom.Six or more students may live in one suite.Other dorms have many rooms along a common hallway, usually with two students in each room. Many students say dormitories provide the best chance to get to know other students. Also, dorms generally cost less than apartments or other housing not owned by the school. Most colleges and universities offer singlesex dorms, but usually males and females live in the same building. They might live on the same floors and share the same 高中英语学习材料madeofjingetieji模块综合测评(二)(时间:100分钟;满分:120分)Ⅰ.阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AWork and PleasureTo be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real.It is no use starting late in life to say:“I will take an interest in this or that.”Such an attempt only aggravates (使恶化,使严重) the strain of mental effort.A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like;you have got to like what you do.Broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled (苦干) to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with a hard week' s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or the businessman, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days,to work or worry about trifling(琐碎的) things at the weekend. It may also be said that rational, industrious, useful human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure;andsecond, those whose work and pleasure are one.Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of bread earning, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. But Fortune' s favoured children belong to the second class.Their life is a natural harmony. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays are regarded as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation.Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook,of a change of atmosphere,of a diversion of effort,is essential.Indeed, the fact may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who need changes at intervals most.1.Why does the author emphasize in the first paragraph that the hobbies must be all real?A.Because an attempt to fake your hobby would only burden your mental stress.B.Because people would start to acquire a lot of knowledge.C.Because it is too late in life to take an interest in things.D.Because one would never benefit or get relief from his hobbies.2.Which is the best attitude towards work and pleasure according to the passage?A.To treat work as work and pleasure as pleasure.B.To do what you like.C.To love your work as pleasure.D.To maintain a keen appetite for pleasure.3.What do most rational, industrious, useful people do with theirwork and pleasure?A.They make their life by working and seek pleasure outside work.B.They are either toiled or worried or bored to death.C.They are having pleasure when they are working.D.They have their compensations by working long hours.4.Who needs occasional changes from his routine most according to the author?A.The manual labourers who are tired out with a hard week' s sweat and effort.B.Those who see work as pleasure and holidays as enforced interruptions.C.Those who stay long hours in the office or the factory.D.The rational, industrious, useful human beings.BThe technology is great.Without it we wouldn't have been able to put a man on the moon, explore the ocean's depths or eat microwave puters have revolutionized our lives and they have the power to educate and pass on knowledge. But sometimes this power can create more problems than it solves.Every doctor has had to try their best to calm down patients who've come into their surgery waving an Internet printout, convinced that they have some rare incurable disease, say, throat cancer. The truth is usually far more ordinary, though: they don't have throat cancer, and it's just that their throats are swollen.Being a graduate of the Interact “school”of medicine does not guarantee accurate selfhealthchecks. One day Mrs.Almond came to my hospital after feeling faint at work. While I took her blood sample and tried to find out what waswrong, she said calmly,“I know what's wrong;I've got throat cancer.I know there's nothing you doctors can do about it and I've just got to wait until the day comes.”As a matter of routine I ordered a chest Xray.I looked at it and the blood results an hour later.Something wasn't right.“Did your local doctor do an Xray?” I asked.“Oh,I haven't been to the doctor for years,”she replied.“I read about it on a website and the symptoms fitted,so I knew that's what I had.”However, some of her symptoms, like the severe cough and weight loss, didn't fit with it —but she'd just ignored this.I looked at the Xray again, and more tests confirmed it wasn't the cancer but tuberculosis (肺结构)—something that most certainly did need treating, and could be deadly. She was lucky we caught it when we did.Mrs.Almond went pale when I explained she would have to be on treatment for the next six months to ensure that she was fully recovered. It was certainly a lesson for her.“I'm so embarrassed,”she said, shaking her head,as I explained that all the people she had come into close contact with would have to be found out and tested. She listed up to about 20,and then I went to my office to type up my notes.Unexpectedly, the computer was not working,so I had to wait until someone from the IT department came to fix it.Typical.Maybe I should have a microwave sausage while I waited?5.Mrs.Almond talked about her illness calmly because .A.she thought she knew it wellB.she had purchased medicine onlineC.she graduated from a medical schoolD.she had been treated by local doctors6.It was lucky for Mrs.Almond .A.to have contacted many friendsB.to have recovered in a short timeC.to have her assumption confirmedD.to have her disease identified in time7.By mentioning the breakdown of the computer, the author probably wants to prove .A.it's a must to take a break at workB.it's vital to believe in IT professionalsC.it's unwise to simply rely on technologyD.it's a danger to work long hours on computersCFor those who are tired of doing the laundry,Samsung has found an answer: a washing machine that can tell you when your laundry is done via a smartphone app(application).Strange though it may seem —“my wife already does that”was a common response among attendees viewing the device when it was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week —Samsung is just one of many appliance makers racing to install(安装) a large number of Internet-connected features in machines in an effort to make them “smart”.Last year,it was a refrigerator that tweeted. This year,it' s WiFienabled laundry machines and fridges that can tell you when your groceries are going bad.The washers and dryers, available starting in the spring, connect to any smartphone through a downloadable application. The phone can then be used as a remote control,so the machines can be turned on and off while their owner is at work or on the bus.Samsung says it' s not just something new —the app connection actually has some practical uses.“If you started to dry clothes in the morning and forgot to take them out,you can go to your phone and restart your dryer for the time when you come home,so your clothes are refreshed and ready to go,”said spokesperson Amy Schmidt. The company also says that with electricity rates (电价) varying depending on the time of day, more control over when the machines are used can help save money.Perhaps, but what they will probably really accomplish is what all good technologies do —enable laziness.Rather than getting up to check on whether the laundry is done, users will instead monitor it on their phones while watching TV.8.What can be inferred from the common response of the attendees at the CES?A.The machine will be a big success.B.Their wives like doing the laundry.C.The machine is unrelated to their life,D.This kind of technology is familiar to them.9.What can we learn about the new laundry machines?A.They can tell you when your clothes need washing.B.They can be controlled with a smartphone.C.They are difficult to operate.D.They are sold at a low price.10.We can conclude from Samsung' s statements that .A.the app connection makes life easierB.it is better to dry clothes in the morningC.smartphones can shorten the drying timeD.we should refresh clothes back at home11.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?A.The laundry should be frequently checked.B.Lazy people like using such machines.C.Good technologies also cause problems.D.Television may help do the laundryDIt's the basic nature of young children to touch the things in their environment that their parents find most unpleasant.Just try to keep your one-year olds from sticking the dog's bone in their mouth!Although health authorities suggest regular hand washing,it's difficult not to worry about what your children are getting into and the effect it will have on their health.Infectious (传染的) diseases are a great cause for concern, but some would argue that our society has gone overboard when it comes to protecting our kids from bacteria(细菌).An increasing body of research suggests that exposing little kids to bacteria may offer them greater protection from illnesses such as allergies(过敏) later on in life. It's believed that when exposure to bacteria and viruses is limited early in life, children face a greater chance of having allergies and other autoimmune (自身免疫的)diseasesduring adulthood. In fact, kids with older brothers and sisters who grew up on a farm seem to show lower rates of allergies.Just as a baby's brain needs stimulation, input, and interaction to develop normally, the young immune (免疫的) system is strengthened by exposure to everyday bacteria so that it can learn, adapt, and regulate itself, notes Thom McDade,PhD,associate professor and director of the Laboratory for Human Biology Research at Northwestern University.Exactly which bacteria seem to do the trick hasn't yet been confirmed. But new research offers clues. In a recent study,McDade's team found that children who were exposed to more dirt and had more cases of diarrhea (腹泻) before age 2 had lower rates of inflammation (炎症) that has been linked to many adulthood diseases such as heart disease in adulthood.“We're moving beyond this idea that the immune system is just involved in allergies and autoimmune diseases to think about its role in inflammation and other diseases,”McDade said.“Exposure to bacterium early in life may play an important role in preventing inflammation in adulthood.”12.What can we learn from the passage?A.Exposure to bacterium as a child can help protect him or her from some illnesses later in life.B.Kids with older brothers and sisters have lower rates of allergies.C.Exposure to bacterium will increase the chance of having allergies in adulthood.D.Parents should protect their kids from exposure to bacteria.13.The underlined word “it” in Pa ragraph 4 refers to .A.a baby's brainB.the young immune systemC.exposure to everyday bacteriumD.a baby's body14.If a kid is exposed to dirt before age 2,he may .A.have fewer cases of diarrhea in adulthoodB.develop a worse immune system than othersC.be more likely to have allergies later in lifeD.be less likely to develop heart disease in adulthood15.What is the author's attitude towards kids' exposure to bacteria?A.Dissatisfied.B.Negative.C.Supportive. D.Angry.Ⅱ.阅读填句(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Swapping Houses for VacationWhen budgeting for a vacation, usually the most expensive part of the trip is the accommodations. The traditional way to take a vacation is to pack some bags, lock up the house, and travel to a new place to stay in a hotel. However, hotels are very expensive, and with rent or housing loan (贷款) due every month,it's difficult for most people to pay for yet another place to stay. 16 Luckily, there is a substitute called house swapping, and it's saving tourists a great deal of cash.17 For example,if a couple from New York want to spend a week in Paris, they would place an ad offering to trade their New York apartment for one in Paris for a week.If a Parisian couple that want tovacation in New York read the advertisement, houses can be swapped, and both couples save hundreds,if not thousands,of dollars by avoiding bigcity hotel fees.If all goes well, both couples can post positive reviews of the other's home online so that potential travelers can see that everything was fine. 18 This builds a community of people who want to help each other out. There are other advantages co house swapping as well. 19 Staying at someone's home puts you in a neighborhood that can give youa better representation of the life and culture in the place you're visiting.20 The next time you want to spend your vacation in a new place, but don't want to pay a fortune, check what's posted online and find a house to swap.A.House swapping is most common in New York and Paris.B.Hotels are often quite difficult to book when you want to explore a new home.C.A lot of times, this extra cost prevents travelers from going very far from home.D.To swap houses, people check the Internet for others planning to travel and trade homes.E.With many house swapping sites growing, this new phenomenon is becoming easier than ever.F.Hotels are often located where few people live, making them a strange place to experience a city.G.On the other hand,if there were trouble, people could write about that to want others not to trust the swappers.Ⅲ.完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)I had worried myself sick over Simon's mother coming to see me.Iwas a new 21 ,and I gave an honest account of the students' work.In Simon's case, the grades were awfully low.He couldn't read his own handwriting. 22 he was a bright student. He discussed adult subjects with nearly adult comprehension. His work in no way reflected his 23 .So when Simon's mother entered the room,my palms (手掌心) were sweating.I was completely 24 for her kisses on both my cheeks.“I came to thank you,”she said, surprising me beyond speech,25 me,Simon had become a different person. He talked of how he 26 me,he bad begun to make friends, and for the first time in his twelve years,he had 27 spent an afternoon at a friend's house. She wanted to tell me how grateful she was for the 28 I had nurtured(培养) in her son.She kissed me again and left.I sat, stunned (惊呆),for about half an hour,29 what had just happened. How did I make such a life-changing difference to that boy without 30 knowing it? AInternational model United Nations meetings are events at which high school and college students from all over the world play the role of UN representatives. These meetings are largely based on the real United Nations. They are even divided into many of the same groups, such as the UN Security Council and the World Health Organization. The events allow students to develop and strengthen skills that are important for international careers, such as politics or international law.One of the main goals of the meetings is to develop effective(有效的) communication skills. Such activities challenge students’ abilities to express their thoughts in a clear, thoughtful way.In addition to working on basic communication, students at the meetings try to express themselves in polite ways that help to solve problems. This is perhaps the most difficult task for real UN delegates(代表), so model UN organizers put great importance on it. The organizers strongly encourage students to try to understand the ideas of others, consider their feelings, and agree on solutions. The meetings are also designed to help students become more openminded. Students often play the role of representatives for countries other than their own. This encourages them to learn more about other cultures and to think about important problems in different ways. While pretending to be from a different country, students are receiving a lot of ideas and information that they would not normally consider. Usually, they come away with a much better understanding of people in different cultures. This experience often gives them an advantage over schoolmates who only learn about world events and international relations in traditional classrooms.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

BEmily and Zach are confused! Their parents told them they could choose between Massachusetts and Arizona for their vacation this summer.Emily has always wanted to visit Boston, the capital of Massachusetts.Zach and she both agree that walking along the Freedom Trail would enable them to see Boston’s most famous places of historic interest, like the site of the school Ben Franklin attended and the Old State House. If Emily and Zach went to Massachusetts, they could spend a few days at the beaches on Cape Cod.Emily loves body boarding, and Zach is great at body surfing. They both enjoy building sandcastles with their mom and dad.Zach finds learning about Native Americans wonderful and has always wanted to travel along the Apache Trail in Arizona. This mountain highway passes Native American ruins in Tonto National Forest.Emily is not as interested in traveling along this trail as Zach, but they both would like to visit Phoenix, the capital, and then travel to Grand Canyon National Park and Meteor Crater(陨石坑).Zach learned in science class that Meteor Crater is a hole over 4,000 feet wide and 520 feet deep that was created when a huge object from space fell to Earth. The object went so deep that it has never been found.Zach would really like to try to discover it.But Emily thinks if experienced scientists and researchers cannot find it, Zach might as well not even bother (费工夫) to try.The only drawback for Zach and Emily if they choose Arizona would be the heat.It is very hot and dry in this southwestern state.Massachusetts, on the other hand, is in the northeastern United States. Here Zach and Emily and their parents could enjoy mild (温和的) temperatures.Their parents love hot weather, but Zach and Emily do not really like to sweat. How will they ever decide to which state they should travel? If only they could take two trips!【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。
