M:I’d like light diet.
(Text 3)

(Text 6)
W:City of Nutley, Department of Parks and Recreation.
M:Yes, this is Mr. Black from Balentine Construction Company. We’re organizing an outdoor company event. May I reserve a barbecue area and the big picnic tables at Lake Park for the July 4 holiday weekend?
W:It’s a bit late to call, isn’t it?

(Text 8)

M:I haven’t decided what to do yet. Anyway, staying at home all day watching plays or movies on TV isn’t a good way to kill time. Do you have any suggestions?
W:I feel like going to the Coal Trade Center. They’ve got a special exhibition about new sports cars. Why don’t you go with me?

W:It seems you’re a little homesick. I know some good Chinese restaurants around here. I’ll write down a few names. You can try them.
M:Sure, thanks.Sounds good.
(Text 10)
(M) I moved into a new house last week. It’s on the side of a mountain. At the back of my house there are rice fields. There’s a house next door to mine and it has a barking dog. Luckily, I like dogs and this dog loves me. He welcomes me home every day, which makes me feel good.
The house is not big, with one story. When you go in the door there is a hallway for taking off shoes and coat. Then you are in a bright living room. There is what I call a work area. It’s where I have my computer and some books and research stuff. The kitchen is large. I have everything because I enjoy cooking. It relaxes me after a hard day at work. I’m thinking of buying a new bigger fridge because my fridge
is too small, and because it’s in the country I can’t do shopping as often. By the time I get out of work, most of the shops around here are closed. The shower room and the bathroom are separated. There is a washing machine in my bathroom. I can’t live without it.
I’m having a housewarming party this Sunday. Welcome to join it!

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
Paris, 21st November, 1783. There were hundreds of people in the street round a large balloon. “What is it? What does it do?” they asked.
Then two young men came out of a house on the other side
of the street, and went to the balloon. They had some wood and
paper with them, and they put them into a big basket under the
balloon. Then they got into the basket. They took food with
them, and some warm clothes, because it was a cold day.
Then the two young men made a fire with the wood and paper. The fire was hot, and the hot air went up into the balloon.
Cold air is heavy, but hot air is light and rises. After some minutes, the balloon was very light and left the ground.
The two young men flew about five and a half miles, and came down outside the city. It wasn’t a very long journey, but it was a very important one, because it was the first journey in the air.
Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier made this balloon. It flew because it was light, but it was dangerous because of the fire.
Two years after that, two men crossed the English Channel from England to France in a balloon full of hydrogen. Hydrogen is a very light gas. One of them was a Frenchman, Blanchard, and the other was a rich American, Dr.John Jeffries. They had a lot of problems.
First the balloon flew up very high, so they opened the valve (阀) and a lot of gas came out. Then the balloon sank, so they threw everything out, even their food and clothes.
But they reached France after an exciting journey, and landed near Calais.

Kids will often ignore your requests for them to shut off the TV, start their chores (杂事), or do their homework as a way to avoid following your directions. Before you know it, you’ve started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to do their assignments, clean their room, or take out the trash. Rather than saying,
“Do your chores now,” you’ll be more effective if you
set a target time for when the chores have to be completed.
So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say, “If
chores aren’t done by 4 p.m., here are the consequences.”
Then it’s up to your child to complete the chores. Put the ball back in their court. Don’t argue or fight with them, just say,“That’s the way it’s going to be.”It shouldn’t be punitive (惩罚性的) as much as it should be persuasive.“If your chores aren’t done by 4 p.m., then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.”On the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple. Have a time when
homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done. If your child says they have no homework, then they should use that time to study or read. Either way, there should be a time set aside when the electronics are off.
When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you’re trying to talk to him, make no bones about it; he is not ignoring you, he is disrespecting you. At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears. Don’t try to communicate with him when he’s wearing headphones — even if he tells you he can hear you. Wearing them while you’re talking to him is a sign of disrespect. Parents should be very tough about this kind of thing. Remember, mutual respect becomes more important as children mature.

C
When it’s time to plan your child’s party, let your imagination go. Games, crafts, songs, stories and plays all can be part of the fun. The trick is choosing what is right for the age of your guests.
Preschooler parties
Simple songs, stories and games will work well for a preschooler party. Consider renting cartoons or movies, having a puppet show, or making up a story using your guests as characters.
For some reason, parents seem to take an easier, more expensive route, and take kids to Chuckie Cheese, McDonald’s, or have to have a huge pizza party. However, preschoolers are easy to please!
Five to eight year olds
For 5 to 8 year olds, you’ll need more room to move, like a family room, basement, garage, or backyard. If your party is indoors, check the guest list and plan some games and activities in advance. Finger painting, drawing and guessing games can all be played indoors without disturbing (打扰) the neighbours.
Nine year olds and up
By the time the kids are nine, the party will most likely be all boys or all girls, and it’s natural to plan activities around the kid’s special interests, like a roller skating party, a football game or a baseball game.
Should a child have a party every year?
When I was growing up, a party was held every three years. I had one on my first birthday, when I was three, when I was six, and nine, and my big party was when I was thirteen. When I turned sixteen, my dad took me to a very special restaurant to eat. When I asked my dad why he took me there, he said he wanted to show me that
there was more to life than what I was seeing.
