munication technologies are far from equivalent. A recent study comparing honestyacross a range of different media revealed that people were twice likely to tell lies when using the phone than when communicating via e-mail. It had previously been assumed that people would be more inclined to fabricate the truth when using e-mail, due to the remoteness of the interaction making people more comfortable about deceiving others. On the contrary, it seems that anxiety over the accountability afforded by the recording of e-mail exchanges induces greater truthfulness. However, the research also noted that people are much more likely to be rude or insulting over e-mail, outweighing any benefits of increased honesty! An implication of the study is that if telephone conversations are recorded and people are aware of this fact, they are likely to be more truthful over the phone. TPeople are unconcerned about the repercussion of e-mail untruths. FIt had been assumed that people would communicate more honestly when using e-mail than when using the telephone. F2.There is often considerable scientific disagreement both about available reserves of naturalresources and about the extent of environmental damage caused by particular pollutants.Even where the scientific evidence is incontrovertible. There may be political conflict, based on different vested interests, over the degree to which particular environmental controls should be accepted. Governments may, for example, refrain from introducing effective control if they fear these will adversely affect company profitability or jobs, even where the environmental cost of not introducing controls are considerable. There is always scientific debate around the facts regarding the reserves of natural resources.TVery rarely is there conflict over the degree to which particular environmental controls should be accepted. FParties with a vested interest are more influenced by politics than science when deciding whether to implement environmental controls.C3.Whilst high visibility crime such as night-time drunken disturbance has increased, totalurban and rural crime, both reported and unreported, has fallen over the last two years, yet paradoxically people feel less safe, believing that the converse is the case. This fall in crime has coincided with a drop in the number of police officer on the street. A citizen’s fear of crime seems not to be a matter of reality at all- the visibility of law enforcement officials hasa greater impact on their view of reality than hard facts.Reducing the number of police officer has led to a reduction in crime. CCrime statistics support popular belief about the level of crime. FPeople feel safer when there are more police on the street. T4.There is no task more difficult than that of ensuring the education of children in modernsociety. Not only school, but also teachers and their roles have changed out of all recognition in the past few decades, thanks to the impact on teaching institutions by indoctrinating, andindoctrinated, reformist intellectuals bearing revolutionary ideas. To the perpetual indiscipline of youth has now been added the indiscipline of parents, many of whom interpret any reports of wrongdoing in school on the part of their offspring as a personal affront, or as the manifestation of the malice of teachers. As for the teachers themselves, whilst many are respectable and learned men and women, who view it as their vocation to induct their charges into a civilization and a way of behaving, others attempt to influence youth merely to further their political or ideological ends. Some of those working in education have their own hidden agendas. TTeacher with revolutionary ideas will attempt to influence their pupils for their own political ends. T CSome teachers who report children of wrongdoing do so because of malice, rather than nay legitimate reason. Cst week, the competition commission outlined two packages to regulate the sale ofextended product warranties, which provide repair/replacement for faulty goods beyond the manufacturer’s original guarantee. Whilst warranty sales are currently highly profitable, with some retailers attributing up to ¾ of their profits to this income stream, they are also criticized for offering poor value for money due to obscure clauses, which restrict payment in many, but the most unlikely claim scenarios. The first package-to ban retailers selling a full warranty on the day of purchase was condemned by all as draconian-whilst the other, rather milder, option of forcing retailers to provide full information on warranty exclusions and an obligatory 60–day “cool-off” period for customers, received a more balanced hearing.Because no one believes that the first option will ever be implemented, investors and analysts ha ve focused more closely on the implication of the “milder” package. In a recent leaked research note, one analyst suggested that the implementation of the reform in the second package would place a staff-training burden on the retailer, which would lead to a significant increase in the cost of warranty sales, and a predicted 20% fall in actual sales.“Cool-off” periods are not currently offered by companies selling product warranties. TIt is likely that neither package will be implemented. CPreventing retailers from selling warranties on the day of purchase of a product was felt to be too severe a restriction. T6.All scientific knowledge is provisional. Everything that science knows, even the mostmundane facts and long-established theories, is subject to re-examination as new information comes in. the latest data and ideas are scrutinized the most. Some recantations will be unavoidable, but this is not a weakness of science, but rather its strength. No endeavor rivals science in its incremental progress towards a more complete understanding of the observable universe.Science improves understanding on the basis of leaving unchallenged those theories that appear to work. FSome facts in science cannot be challenged if any progress is to be made. FThat which is not observable cannot be part of the domain of science. C7.The Statute on workplace safety requires that an employer should ensure, so far as isreasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all full and part time employees, and also those not in direct employment who may be affected by acts or omissions at work. However, it is also the duty of employees to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and also that of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work, for example by complying with all notices on health and safety that are posted. If a workplace visitor is hurt due to an act of negligence by an employee then the employee may be held solely responsible. FAn employer has responsibility for the safety of visitors to his factory. TEmployees have negligible responsibility for workplace health and safety. F8.Today’s historians aim to construct a record of human activities and to use this record toachieve a more profound understanding of humanity. This conception of their task is quite recent, dating from the development from 18th and early 19th centuries of scientific history, and cultivated largely by professional historians who adopted the assumption that the study of natural, inevitable human activity. Before the late 18th century, history was taught in virtually no schools, and it did not attempt to provide an interpretation of human life as a whole. This is more appropriately the function of religion, of philosophy, or even perhaps of poetry. That which constitutes the study of history has changed over time. CProfessional historians did not exist before 18th century. CIn the 17th century, history would not have been thought of as a way of understanding humanity. T9.Whilst having similar effects on employees, there tend to be major difference between amerger and an acquisition. In an acquisition, power is substantially assumed by the new parent company. Change is often swift and brutal as the acquirer imposes its own control systems and financial restraints. Parties to a merger are likely to be evenly matched in terms of size, and the power and cultural dynamics of the combination are more ambiguous, integration is a more drawn out process.During an acquisition, there is often more overt conflict and resistance and a sense of powerlessness. In mergers, because of the prolonged period between the initial announcement and full integration, uncertainty and anxiety continue for a much longer time as the organization remains in a state of limbo. There tends to be a major power difference between parties in an acquisition. TMergers and acquisition tend to have distinctly different impacts on employees. FMergers yield a shorter period of anxiety and uncertainty amongst employees. F10.Management is, in effect, the catalyst that is essential for converting the resources and rawmaterial inputs of the operation into valued outputs and, in the process, ensuring that stakeholder needs are satisfied. Managers represent the critical factor, which economists refer to as “enterprise”, without which the other factors (land, labor and capital) cannot function. Managers are effectively the custodians of the organization’s resource, responsible for deciding what the resources should be used for, how best to use them, and to which customers the outputs should be targeted.Stakeholder needs are best served through the creation of valued outputs. CManagement has at least two major but different responsibilities. TManagers must decide how best to handle all the resources at their disposal.T11.There is no doubt that vegetarian food can be healthier than a traditional diet –indeed, research has demonstrated that vegetarians are less likely to suffer from heart disease and obesity than those who eat meat. One long-standing concern about a vegetarian lifestyle is the risk of failing to take in enough protein. However, historical calculations as to the amount of protein needed for a healthy lifestyle have recently been shown to overestimate the quantities needed, and if vegetarian select their food carefully they should be able to meet their protein needs.A balanced diet is more likely to promote health than any particular food or food group inisolation. CToo much protein in the diet can lead to heart disease. COver time the recommendations as to what constitutes a healthy balanced diet have changed.C12.Water, the most common liquid used for cleaning, has a property called surface tension.Molecules in the body of the water are surrounded by other molecules, but at the surface a “tension” is created as molecules are only surrounded by other molecules on the waterside. This tension inhibits the cleaning process, as it slows the wetting of surface due to tension causing the water to bead up. This is where water droplets hold their shape and do not spread. For effective cleaning to take place “surface tension” must be reduced so that water can spread. Surface-active agents, or surfactants, are chemicals, which are able to do this effectively.Surface-active agents, or surfactants, are only used for cleaning. CWater is the only known liquid used for cleaning. FIf surfactant chemicals are added to water when cleaning a surface, surface tension will occur.FThe molecules on the waterside hinder the cleaning process. T13.The biggest risk facing the world’s insurance companies is possibly the rapid change nowtaking place within their own ranks. Sluggish growth in core markets and intense price competition, coupled with shifting patterns of customer demand and the rising cost of losses, are threatening to overwhelm those too slow to react.Insurance companies are experiencing a boom in their core markets. FInsurance companies are competing to provide best prices to customers. TInsurance companies are coping well with increased price competition and rising losses. F14.Short-sightedness is to a large extent inherited, its incidence varies from one family toanother. The reason behind the link between the common incidence of short-sightedness and high intelligence is unclear. Previous generations thought that eyes could become strained by years spent poring over books, but a few decades ago the popular medical view was that short-sighted people gravitated towards the library because they found it hard to excel at sports. Recently there has been partial support for a theory that high intelligence and short-sightedness may, in fact, be part of a genetic package. The genetic link between intelligence and short-sightedness has recently been disproven. F People from all families stand at an equal chance of being short-sighted. FIntelligence is to a large extent inherited. C15.The cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is the afterglow from the Big Bang, andweak as it may be today, these primeval microwaves hold valuable information about fundamental properties of the early universe. Slight differences, or anisotropies, in the brightness and polarization of the CMB reveal clues about the nature of the primeval plasma: that the discrepancies exist at all shows that the plasma was not perfectly uniform. The variations in the brightness seen in the CMB reflect differences in the density of the primordial plasma, whereas the anisotropic polarization reveals information about the dynamics of the early universe, such as the movement of material and the number of gravitational waves. The CMB, however, is not the only source of polarized microwaves and the cosmological polarization must thus be measured at different wavelengths so as to isolate them from foreground signals. The anisotropies of the CMB show solely that the primordial plasma was not uniform. FThe polarization of cosmic microwaves is measured at different wavelength so as to separate the foreground from the background signals. TThrough studying the cosmological microwaves, one may learn about the forces of gravity in the early universe. T16.Internet experts are warning of a new multitude of extremely dangerous computer virusesthat have recently been causing devastation and could potentially cripple entire global computer systems. These viruses can replicate thousands of copies within hours and are capable of extirpating security software that, in turn, enables hackers to appropriate control of the machines. Criminal gangs can then establish bank accounts using stolen identities, sabotage a company’s computer system and extort money for its restoration, and sell computers that have been interfered with on the black market. Computer users are often advised to refrain from opening suspicious program attached to the emails and to continually update their security software.Internet experts are advising computer users to replace their software if they suspect it has been tampered with. C17.For most people, any reference to hypnosis brings to mind images of individuals involved inamusing, and often out of character, behavior. However, hypnosis is also a topic of scientific research. Research by scientists over the last few decades has revealed ways in which memory processes, and processes involved in pain perception can be changed using hypnosis. It has also been found that hypnotic suggestions can regulate activity in identifiable sections of the brain and can contribute to the effective management of cognitive conflict.Findings from several related brain imaging studies, for example, have suggested that people under hypnosis cab exhibit reduced level of brain activity in both visual area and the anterior cingulate cortex. Disparate research has already established the role of these brain structures in the monitoring the cognitive conflict.18.Workers are becoming increasingly concerned about company relocation due to itsassociation with employee distress and isolation, which can be caused by issues such as the management of property transitions and loss of community ties. Furthermore, moving home can put a strain on worker’s financial resources and close relationships, especially for those working parents who may feel guilty about moving children to new schools. Regardless of the disruption created, some individuals are very willing to relocate, due to the potential for enhanced career prospects and long-term financial stability. Some people may feel guilty about the consequences of relocating. TCompany relocation has increased. CThe potential benefits of job relocation are seen, by some, to be worth the associated distress and strain. T19.Political, economic and demographic developments are combining to increase the wealth ofindividuals leading economies. These individuals take a much more active role in managing their personal financial affairs and in determining how their assets should be invested for their long-term benefit. As a result, we are seeing the emergence of a new market, consisting of so-called “afflue nt individuals”. This structural trend is set to continue and will provide significant opportunities for financial services providers. This band of individuals has traditionally been dominated by old money inheritance, a nd this will remain a factor, but the rise of new affluent money is increasing as individuals benefit from higher salaries and compensation in the form of stock options. These new affluent individuals are also creating wealth as small business entrepreneurs.Affluent individuals want to manage their own assets rather than use financial service providers. CIndividuals cannot become “affluent” through inheriting old money. FInherited old money will be completely replaced by new affluent money. F20.At the moment of GTC, like other European producers, is able to relieve at least some of itsover-capacity by exporting, partly to Central America. A decade from now, that region will belargely self-sufficient and trade will be starting to flow the other way. However, for GTC investors, the comp any’s recent restructure could herald better times. The group’s lack of focus and lack-lustre returns have been much criticized of late.Central America will, in the future, begin to export less to Europe. FCentral American producers will find a ready market for their products in Europe. CRestructuring generally produces an increase in profitability. C21.The increasing fragility of the rural economy will be the biggest challenge facing countrycommunities over the next ten years. Agriculture, which accounts for a quarter of rural job, is in decline. Tourism provides no more than half this number of job. The rural manufacturing sector, however, has grown over last ten years. Despite this, it still employs fewer than one in twenty people living in rural area, and is threatened by companies based in industrial areas, which benefit from access to a larger skilled workforce and better transportation networks.Industries based in rural areas benefit from better transport links. FManufacturing provides the fewest jobs in the countryside. CThe manufacturing sector is likely to be the main source of employment for rural workers in the future. CIndustries based in rural areas suffer from poorer transport links. T22.In recent years, many issues have been considered when attempting to ameliorate thewellbeing of patients and the efficiency of hospital administration. Patients have often complained about endless waiting lists, low standards of cleanliness, poor hospital food, and unsatisfactory doctor-patient communication and now, according to an expert from a leading image consultancy, doctors’ dress codes and their general appearance must come under close scrutiny. Of healthcare professionals have an unwashed appearance, dirty nails or unkempt hair, this exudes the impression of recklessness, wearing red reminds patients of blood, and power dressing is discouraged because patients may feel undermined and less relaxed. Although campaign groups approve of healthcare professionals leading by example with high standards of hygiene in hospitals, some individuals argue that this potential new image legislation is merely a case of jumping on the bandwagon of the current media trend for home and lifestyle makeovers.Individuals have argued that the current media trend for lifestyle makeover is direct result of the concern over the image of new legislations. FNew hospital legislation states that healthcare professionals must have clean fingernails. TIt is always preferable for healthcare professionals to wear blue instead of red. C23.One of the great paradoxes of entrepreneurship is that entrepreneurs must develop thecapacity to engage the urgent with the emergent. Routine pressures force us to allow the urgent to dominate us, quarterly reports, market share, and tangible return on investment become paramount in this paradox, emergent (strategic) issues are often lost. The urgent presents itself in tangible shape and form, whereas the emergent is subtler in its appearance. Entrepreneurs need to pre-sense emergent reality, thus they require more than ordinary attentiveness. However, information consumes the attention of the recipient, and urgent information is by nature more demanding of attention than emergent. Yet it is an awareness of the emergent that frequently distinguishes the successful leader, the individual who can see through the reactive demands of day-to-day urgency to act rapidly upon the emergent trends that, if capitalized upon, can ensure commercial triumph. One way of ensuring time to identify the emergent is to make time for reflective moments in work life in order to restore the quality of attentiveness and see through the fog of the immediate. It is easier to spot an emergent trend than an urgent issue. FThe present tends to be governed by the immediate demands. TIt is easy to lose sight of the strategic issues given the demands that immediate issues make.T24.Some doctors claim that any information received from a patient during a medicalconsultation is subject ethically to absolute confidentiality and can in no circumstance be revealed without the patient’s permission. Without such a rule, they believe that patients would not supply all of the information needed to treat them. Most however, believe that their obligations to society override their obligations to their patients; for example, being prepared to report to the police a patient who persisted in driving, despite the existence of a condition that rendered them unsafe. One reason for such a conflict is that whilst courts recognize the confidentiality of exchange between lawyers and clients, this is not extended to doctor and patients.A doctor would report to the police a patient who was a danger to others. CPatients rarely give permission for a doctor to discuss their medical details with others. CDoctors are in agreement about the ethics and practice of patient confidentiality. F25.Private airline companies have always been determined to operate a transport system that issafe for passengers, whilst still remaining competitively priced and commercially viable. However, a private sector business can only remain viable if it generates profits for its shareholders. Recent reports suggest that if all aircrafts were fitted with military derived ground-to-air missile defense system, and at all airports there was infallible screening for weapons and explosives then the system would be much safer. However, totally effective screening would preclude all possibility of profit, and current systems are still very thorough, whilst also providing a good cost-benefit ratio.Military aircraft are safer than commercial craft. CMore effective airline security systems than are currently in use are available. TCurrent airline security systems provide the best possible mix of cost against benefit. C26.Full employment is a concept, which is often referred to but seldom defined. Beveridge’sdescription comes close to what most economists understand by the term. In his view full employment means that “unemployment is reduced to short intervals of s tanding by, withthe certainty that very soon one will be wanted in one’s old job again or will be wanted in a new job that is within one’s powers.” In other words, f ull employment does not mean zero unemployment, but allows for some measure of acceptable unemployment, for example, “frictional” unemployment whilst changing jobs.Definitions of full employment are abundant. FSome economists do not understand full employment in Beveridge’s terms. CIn B’s view, full employment incorporates those unemploye d people who are certain to regain work very shortly. T27.The typical share-save scheme is a regular savings plan that gives employees the opportunityto purchase shares in 3.5 or 7 years time, should they choose to exercise the purchase option, at a discounted price fixed before the saving period starts. In addition to potential financial gains, the employee also has the opportunity to participate in future company development through the acquisition of shares. The employee does not have to pay income tax on any gains made on the exercise of the option to buy shares, though there may be a liability to capital gains tax if the shares are sold and the resulting gains cause that particular employee’s level of capital gains liability to exceed the annual exempt amount.Employees usually exercise the option to sell their shares at the end of the saving period. CEmployees do not automatically have to pay Capital Gains Tax as a consequence of participating in share-save scheme. TIndividuals who sell shares generate no potential tax liability. F28.Staff monitoring is a particularly issue for managers – the only kind of staff monitoring notsubject to regulation is where one individual watches another. Once any recording starts, even if it is manual, monitoring is subject to the Data Protection Act – employees need to be told about monitoring takes place and why. The information gathered has to be kept secure, and affected staffs have the right to see information related to them. Whilst a person’s consent is not required, he or she must be consulted about the processing of personal information (monitoring data is construed as “personal”), and monitoring practices must not cause unnecessary stress. However, covert monitoring without consultation may be used, but only in particularly serious circumstances, such as when a staff member is suspected of dishonest. In such a case, the covert surveillance (e.g. hidden cameras) must be in targeted areas and at times when the dishonest behavior is expected- any other information must be disregarded. It is not possible to avoid the Data Protection Act when monitoring staff. FManagers find it difficult to justify the use of covert monitoring procedures. CAny employee in a building where monitoring is taking place may see all of the information collected. F29.Without exception, living non-human primates habitually more around on all fours, orquadrupedally, when they are on the ground. Scientists generally assume therefore that the last common ancestor of humans and chimpanzees (our closest living relative) was also a quadrupted. Exactly when the last common ancestor lived is unknown, but clear indicationsof bipedalism, the trait that distinguishes ancient humans from other apes, are evident in the oldest known species of Australopithecus, which lived in Africa roughly four millions years ago.Bipedal apes are more evolutionarily advantaged than quadrupedal ones. C/Bipedalism is the main trait that distinguishes ancient humans from Australopithecus. FAustralopithecus is as closely related to ancient man as to the chimpanzee. C30. A new computer program can tell whether a book was written by a man or a woman. Thesimple scan of key words and syntax is about 80% accurate on both fiction and non-fiction.The program’s success seems to confirm the stereotypical perception of differences in male and female language use. Crudely put, men talk more about objects and women more about relationships.Female writers use more pronouns (I, you, she, myself), whilst males prefer words that identify or determine nouns (a, the, that) and words that quantify them (one, two, more). These differing styles have previously been called “involved” and “informational”, respectively. The algorithm within the program was initially trained on a few test cases to identify the most prevalent fingerprints of gender and of fiction and non-fiction. The algorithm can now be focused on new bodies of text. Strikingly, the distinctions between male and female writers are much the same as those that, even more clearly, differentiate non fiction-and fiction. The program can tell these two genres apart with 98% accuracy.Stereotypes are generally based on fact. CWomen are more likely than men to adopt an “informational” style of written communication.FThe program is more accurate at identifying the gender of the writer then the fiction or non-fiction content of the passage. F31.Sandford Group’s first end of year announcement since the takeover of SPX Inc placed muchemphasis on the period of extreme transformation and development undergone by the company. Emphasis was placed on the admirable way that its employees had steered the company through a turbulent six months, and subsequent benefits that were being reaped, such as a steady growth of the Sandford brands in the marketplace. Whilst recognizing that the takeover had been undertaken as a way of increasing market share, rather than improving efficiency, the announcement made much of the substantial yet somewhat unintended cost reductions that had taken place. This was explained by the swift introduction of SPX’s computer systems which permitted a Group headcount cut and also the subletting of surplus office space. The time since takeover has not always been easy for Sandford. T (six months)The takeover achieved more for the company than was initially planned. TThe performance of the Sandford brands was poor prior to the takeover(在takeover之前市场表现差) . C。

This Act covers any information stored on a computer that identifies a living individual. Companies holding such information must, under the Terms of the Act, make sure that they take ‘adequate care’ of the data, both technica lly and in terms of the behavior of the organization. The personal data stored has to be protected from loss, destruction or damage.Example 1. Any information stored about a named individual currently working for an organization is subject to the Data Protection Act. TrueExample 2. As long as any data about a named individual is managed in a technically adequate way, there are no other restrictions as to how it can be used or handled. FalseExample 3. Damage to data held about named individuals represents the biggest threat to its proper management. Can’t sayExample 4. Data about named individuals who have left a company is not subject to the Act. False Section ACompetitor analysis involves the examination of competitors in order that the planner can develop and sustain superior competitive performance for the organization. This statement belies the fact that in order to do this one must first establish from where the competition currently stems and from where it might stem in the future. One also has to consider and appraise comp etitors’ present and likely future objectives and strategies, and their likely reactions to the competitive moves that an organization might make.1. Planners can only sustain superior performance for their organization by doing competitor analysis.2. Effective competitor analysis involves looking into the future.3. It is easier to establish where competition currently stems from, rather than where it might stem from in the future.4. It is not always apparent to organizations who their competitors are.Section BThe model of consumer behavior on which neo-classical demand theory is based implies that consumers are perfectly informed about the price and quality characteristics of the products on offer, and are constantly altering their expenditure patterns in response to price and quality changes, so as to maximiz e their total ‘utility’ (satisfaction). This model is unrealistic, as the range of products on offer in modern markets is immense, and no consumer has the knowledge or inclination to acquire the information that would be needed to make choices in this way.5. Being up to date with product information plays little part in neo-classical demand theory.6. Neo-classical demand theory is only one of a number of models of consumer behavior.7. There are some consumers who are perfectly informed about the price and quality characteristics of products on offer.8. Maximizing the total utility of a product purchase implies consideration of both price and quality characteristicsThe business of the Company shall be managed by the directors who, subject to the law, the memorandum and articles of association, and any direction given by special resolution, may exercise all the powers of the company. The minimum number of directors is two; there is no maximum number. The directors, or the company by special resolution, may appoint as a director any person who is willing to act as a director, provided he or she is not a bankrupt or disqualified from acting as a director under the Insolvency Act. Directors need not hold shares in the company, but normally they will be required to hold at least a specific minimum shareholding.9. New directors tend to be appointed by existing directors rather than by special resolution.10. The Company cannot operate with only one director.11. Individual bankruptcy is governed by the Insolvency Act.12. There is no upper limit to the number of shares any director can hold.Section DIn most organizations, conflict between groups is quite common. Organizations usually develop differences between functional groups, such as sales and manufacturing, as a means of responding to diversity and uncertainty in their particular environment. Manufacturing must organize for stability and efficiency while sales must organize to relate to and service customers. To accomplish these diverse tasks, sales must hire different people from manufacturing, and each must manage its people in accordance with their unique expectations and the functions’ task requirements. If such differenc es did not exist, neither group could get its job done effectively.13. Functional groups within a single organization are not subject to different forms of uncertainty.14. Conflict between groups is the inevitable result of functional groups having to respond to their own unique environments.15. Manufacturing and sales are unlikely to have the same goals and expectations.16. The reality of functional differences does mean that different groups cannot operate effectively.Section EUnless companies have some knowledge of buyer behavior, they would be unaware of and unfamiliar with the complex range of behavioral factors that impinge upon purchasing behavior. The truth is that, like much of human behavior, purchase behavior is complex and multi-faceted. Even the ‘simplest’ of purchasing dec isions is an amalgam of behavioral forces and factors of which even the purchaser may not be aware. However, even though consumer behavior is a complex subject marketing planners should at least have some understanding of it. Marketers are specifically interested in the behavior associated with groups or segments of consumers as it would be impossible to serve the exact needs and wants of specific individuals in a market and remain profitable.17. The purchasing behavior of consumers is unpredictable.18. Even if one could predict the behavior of an individual buyer, it would not be profitable for marketers to try to do so.19. Some consumer groups exhibit more complex behavior than others do.20. Purchase behavior is not subject to the same whims as other aspects of human behavior. When any company moves from a sales to a marketing approach, it is not just a case of re-titling the Sales Director as Marketing Director and doubling the advertising budget. It requires a complete reorientation in thinking and a revolution in how a company organizes and practices its business activities. Whereas selling focuses on the needs of the seller, marketing focuses on the needs of the buyer. Whereas selling is preoccu pied with the seller’s need to convert his or her product into cash, marketing is preoccupied with the idea of identifying and hence satisfying the needs of the customer. However, subscribing to a philosophy of marketing, even though an important first step, is not the same as putting that philosophy into practice.21. Advertising budgets are normally doubled when a company moves over to a marketing approach.Section GThe corporate mission statement needs detailed consideration by top management to establish the business the company is really in and to relate this consideration to future business intentions. It is a general statement that provides an integrating function for the business, from which a clear sense of business definition and direction can be achieved. By formulating a clear business statement, boundaries for the ‘corporate entity’ can be conceived in the context of wider environmental trends that influence the business. This stage is often overlooked in marketing planning, and yet without it the marketing plan will lack a sense of contribution to the development of the total business.22.The boundaries of a corporate entity can only be assessed in the context of wider environment trends.23.A corporate mission statement enables top management to define the future direction of a business.24.Marketing planning does not often take account of the corporate mission statement.25. Different functions within a business are likely to interpret the mission statement in different ways.Section HThe adoption and application of performance management methods requires many different changes in behavior and attitudes up and down the organization. These methods are not merely techniques; they are ways of life and a philosophy of management. Thus the introduction of performance management systems must come as part of an organiz ation’s commitment to change its culture. Only top management commitment to a new way of managing, often triggered by a crisis, can support such a massive undertaking.29. The support of top managers is essential in changing organizational culture.31. Using performance management systems for the first time requires minimal adaptations on the part of the organization concerned.32. The adoption of performance management methods of itself will create changes in behavior and attitudes.Section IThe ‘prudence rule’, which is sometimes known as conservatism, arises out of the need to make a number of estimates in preparing periodic accounts. Managers and owners are often naturallybe undue optimism over the credit-worthiness of new customers. Insufficient allowance may therefore be made for the possibility of bad debt. In turn, this might have the effect of overstating profit.33. Accountants should avoid making estimates when preparing periodic accounts.34. Most new customers are credit-worthy.35. Managers or owners are not often good judges of their customers’ willingness or ability to pay.36. The ‘prudence rule’ prevents bad debt from arising.Section JA partnership is presumed to exist when two or more people get together in business with the objective of making a profit. The law limits the total number of people who may get together to form a partnership. Apart from a few exceptions, such as firms of accountants and solicitors, a partnership may not consist of more Than 20 partners. The partnership will be managed by general agreement among the partners, but if there is no apparent agreement either formal or informal, then it is presumed that the partnership will operate in accordance with the Partnership Act, 1890. This Act lays down arrangements for dealing with such matters as the amount of capital to be contributed, the management of the business, and the division of the profits or losses among the partners.37. Some agreement must exist between partners as to the way they manage the partnership.Section EThe amount of accounting information that could be supplied to any interested party is practically unlimited. The information needs to be designed in such a way that it meets the objectives of the specific user group. If too much information is given, the user might think that it is an attempt to mislead them, and as a result all of the information may be totally rejected. In this context, accountants try to present accounts in such a way that they represent ‘a true and fair view’. The Companies Act, 1985, for example, requires company accounts to reflect this particular criterion, and it is advisable to apply it to all organizational entities. Unfortunately the Act does not define what is meant by ‘true and fair’, b ut it is assumed that accounts will be so if an entity has followed the rules laid down in appropriate accounting and financial reporting standards.19. It is a positive feature of the Companies Act, 1985, that it does not define what is meant by ‘true an d fair’.20. In practice, the proper application of accounting and financial reporting standards ensures that accounts meet the criteria of being ‘true and fair’.Section FThe style that individual managers choose to adopt depends in no small part on how they regard their subordinates. At one extreme, some will assume that the average employee has an inherent dislike of work and will avoid it if they can. They believe employees need to be controlled, directed, offered rewards or threatened with punishments to get them to make adequate efforts towards the achievement of organizational goals. On the other hand, some will take the view that, according to the conditions, work can be a source of satisfaction or dissatisfaction. Employees are not seen as naturally passive, or resistant to organizational objectives, but have been made so by experience. The most significant reward that can be offered employees is the satisfaction of their need for perso nal21. Using rewards and punishments is a necessary part of organizational life.经典36题答案A:1 C2 T 原文第二句3 C 比较级,原文未提及4 C 未提及B:5 F 与原文意思相反6 C 未提及7 F No Consumer全否定8 T 原文C:9 C 原文未表达比较意思10 T 原文11 C12 CD:13 F 与原文意思相反not14 T15 C16 FE:17 C18 T 原文19 C20 F 相反F:21 C 未提及是哪个的两倍G:22 F 缺少修饰语23 T 第一句24 T 原文25 C 未提及H:29 T31 C未提及32 F 一个是require 一个是create 意思相反I:33 C未提及34 C未提及35 T36 F 相反J: 37 FOther:E: 19 F Positive不对20 F 一个是assume,一个是in practiceF: 21 F18题,根据Marketers are specifically interested in the behaviour associated with groups or segments of consumers as it would be impossible to serve the exact needs and wants of specific individuals in a market and remain profitable.

Verbal-Reasoning-Test1-Questions

Verbal Reasoning Practice Test 1 Questions BookletInstituted in 1979 as a temporary measure to limit population growth, China’s one child policy remains in force today and is likely to continue for anotherdecade. China’s population control policy has attracted criticism because of the manner in which it is enforced, and also because of its social repercussions.Supporters of the Chinese government’s policy consider it a necessarymeasure to curb extreme overpopulation, which has resulted in a reduction of an estimated 300 million people in its first twenty years. Not only is a reduced population environmentally beneficial, it also increases China’s per capita gross domestic product. The one-child policy has led to a disparate ratio of males to females – with abortion, abandonment and infanticide of female infants resulting from a cultural preference for sons. Furthermore, Draconian measures such as forced sterilization are strongly opposed by critics as a violation of humanreproduction rights. The one-child policy is enforced strictly in urban areas, whereas in provincial regions fines are imposed on families with more than one child. There are also exceptions to the rules – for example, ethnic minorities. A rule also allows couples without siblings to have two children – a provisionwhich applies to millions of sibling-free adults now of child-bearing age.Q1 China’s one-child policy increases the country’s wealth.True False Cannot sayQ2 The passage suggests that two-child families will dramatically increase, as sibling-free adults reach child-bearing age.sayTrue False CannotQ3 The main criticism of China’s one-child policy is that it violates human rights.True False Cannot sayQ4 Families with more than one child are more common in China’s rural areas.True False CannotsayQ5 China’s population control policy has been effective.True False Cannot sayThere are 562 federally recognized American Indian tribes, with a total of 1.7 million members. Additionally, there are hundreds of groups seeking federalrecognition – or sovereignty – though less than ten percent will successfullyachieve this status. Federally recognised tribes have the right to self-government, and are also eligible for federal assistance programmes. Exempt from state and local jurisdiction, tribes may enforce their own laws, request tax breaks and control regulatory activities. There are however limitations to their sovereignty including, amongst others, the ability to make war and createcurrency. Historically, tribes were granted federal recognition through treaties or by executive order. Since 1978 however, this has been replaced by a lengthy and stringent regulatory process which requires tribes applying for federalrecognition to fulfil seven criteria, such as anthropological and historicalevidence. One of the complications regarding federal recognition is the legaldefinition of “Indian”. Previously, racial criteria, tribal records and personalaffidavits were used to classify American Indians. Since the 1970s, however, there has been a shift to the use of a political definition – requiring membership ina federally recognized tribe in order to qualify for benefits, such as loans andeducational grants. This definition, however, excludes many individuals of Native American heritage who are not tribal members.Q6 There are only two exemptions to a federally recognized tribe’s powers of self-government.True False Cannot sayQ7 Demand for federal recognition is high because it is a prerequisite for benefit programmes.sayTrue False CannotQ8 Since 1978 it has become harder for a tribe to achieve federally recognized status.sayTrue False CannotQ9 Federally recognized tribes are not subject to state laws and do not pay taxes.sayTrue False CannotQ10 A large number of people who identify themselves as American Indians do not fulfil the legal definition.sayTrue False CannotSodium chloride, or salt, is essential for human life. Typically derived from the evaporation of sea water or the mining of rock salt deposits, salt has been used by humans for thousands of years as a food seasoning and preservative. The mineral sodium is an electrolyte – an electrically-charged ion – that enables cells to carry electrical impulses to other cells, for example muscle contractions.Electrolytes also regulate the body’s fluid levels. A diet deficient in salt cancause muscle cramps, neurological problems and even death. Conversely, a diet high in salt leads to an increased risk of conditions such as hypertension, heart disease and stroke. In spite of high-profile campaigns to raise awareness, salt consumption has increased by 50% in the past four decades, with theaverage adult ingesting more than double the amount of salt their bodyrequires. Much of this increase can be attributed to the advent of frozen andprocessed foods in the mid-twentieth century. In the United States it isestimated that excessive salt consumption claims 150,000 lives and results in $24 billion of health care costs annually. For individuals wishing to reduce their sodium intake, the answer is not simply rejecting the salt shaker: 75% of theaverage person’s salt consumption comes from food, such as bread, cereals, and cheeseQ11 Humans primarily use salt for food flavouring and preservation.True False Cannot sayQ12 The average adult consumes 50% more salt than is recommended by health experts.True False Cannot sayQ13 Frozen and processed foods contain above average levels of sodium chloride.True False Cannot sayQ14 Over three quarters of the average person’s salt consumption comes from frozen and processed foods.True False Cannot sayQ15 The human body needs salt to maintain constant levels of body fluids.True False Cannot sayThe United Nations’ Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) recently reaffirmed a 1989 ban on trading ivory, despite calls fromTanzania and Zambia to lift it. Only 470,000 elephants remain in Africa today – compared to 1.3 million in 1979. While natural habitat loss was a significantfactor in dwindling elephant populations, poaching for ivory was the maincause. Since the ban’s implementation, elephant populations have recovered in many African countries, but an estimated 38,000 elephants are still killedannually. CITES permitted one-off sales in 1999 and in 2008, allowingapproved countries to dispose of their government stockpiles of ivory. Ivoryfrom these sales was exported to Japan and China, where demand for carved ivory is high. Conservation groups vehemently oppose further one-off sales, because much of the ivory sold is of unknown origin. Furthermore, the saleshave fuelled far-Eastern demand for ivory. In central and western Africancountries, where organized crime rings operate lucrative ivory smugglingoperations, poaching remains rife. Those in favour of allowing one-off salesargue that elephants are no longer endangered, and that maintaining the ban will simply inflate the price of illegal ivory, making poaching more tempting.Though the CITES decision is viewed as a victory by conservationists, theAfrican elephant’s future relies on governments’ commitment to enforcing the ban.Q16 Ivory has not been available to purchase legally since 1989.sayTrue False CannotQ17 Whether or not African elephants should be classified as endangered is debateable.True False Cannot sayQ18 Conservationists question the provenance of the ivory sold at one-off sales.True False Cannot sayQ19 Because their elephant populations are thriving, Tanzania and Zambia want to lift the ban on ivory trading.True False Cannot sayQ20 Increased demand from Japan and China is driving up the price of ivory.True False Cannot sayIn biology, the term mutualism refers to a mutually beneficial relationshipbetween two species. The later economic theory of mutualism is based on the labour theory of value, which states that the true cost of an item is the amount of labour that was required to produce it. Hence, goods should not be sold for more than the cost of acquiring them. Mutualism is closely associated withanarchism, because its principles were set forth in the mid-nineteenth century by the French politician and philosopher Pierre-Joseph Proudhon – the firstperson to define himself as an “anarchist”. The main tenets of mutualism are free association and free credit. In a mutualist workplace, workers withdifferent skills form an association to create a product or service. Thoughdependent on each other, the workers are not subordinated as in a capitalist enterprise. Mutual banks, also called credit unions, operate on the belief that free credit enables money to be generated for the benefit of the union’smembers rather than bankers. Modern-day mutualism is sometimes described as free-market socialism. Proponents of mutualism support a free marketeconomy, but object to capitalism because of the inequalities created bygovernment intervention. Many mutual businesses and bankingestablishments exist today, espousing Proudhon’s co-operative model.Q21 Proudhon’s economic theory of mutualism was influenced by biological mutualism.sayTrue False CannotQ22 Mutual banking establishments do not operate on a for-profit basis.sayTrue False CannotQ23 The labour theory of value is defined as: only the person who made an item should profit from its sale.CannotsayTrue FalseQ24 In common with socialism, the economic doctrine of mutualism advocates state control over production.sayTrue False CannotQ25 Free association separates labour from hierarchy and ownership.sayTrue FalseCannotStem cells are cells that can self-renew and differentiate into specialised celltypes. Because of their potential to replace diseased or defective humantissue, stem cells are seen by scientists as key to developing new therapies fora wide range of conditions, including degenerative illnesses and geneticdiseases. Treatments based on adult stem cells – from sources such asumbilical cord blood – have been successfully developed, but what makesstem cell research controversial is the use of embryonic stem cells. Not onlydo embryonic stem cells reproduce more quickly than adult stem cells, theyalso have wider differentiation potential. The main opponents to stem cellresearch are pro-life supporters, who believe that human life should not bedestroyed for science. Advocates of stem cell research counter this crucialpoint by saying that an embryo cannot be viewed as a human life, and thatmedical advances justify the destruction of embryos. Furthermore, stem cellresearch utilizes the thousands of surplus embryos created for in vitrofertilization treatment. The issue is particularly divisive in the United States, where federal funding is not available for the creation of new embryonic stem cell lines, although recent legislation has opened up government funding tofurther research on embryonic stem cells created through private funding.Whereas many governments prohibit the production of embryonic stem cells, it is allowed in countries including the UK, Sweden and the Netherlands.Q26 Stem cells are at the forefront of medical research because of their ability to grow indefinitely.True False Cannot sayQ27 The United States does not permit the creation of embryonic stem cell lines.True False CannotsayQ28 One advantage of embryonic stem cells over adult stem cells is their greater ability to be converted into specialised cell types.True False Cannot sayQ29 The bioethical debate over embryonic stem cell research centres on whether it involves the destruction of human life.True False Cannot sayQ30 Treatments based on embryonic stem cells provide therapies for a wide range of diseases.sayTrue False CannotEnd of free practice verbal reasoning test 1 For more verbal reasoning tests visit 。

Numerical

1. verbal reasoning

比如说,在文章中她说some will...,在题目中他说majority will...。

IntroductionThis report is designed to help you prepare for a Competency Based Interview. Competency Based Interviews are increasingly being used by employers as they have been shown to help make selection decisions more objective and effective. "Competencies" refer to the job-related behaviours that good performers display; and a Competency Based Interview aims to measure how likely you are to exhibit these behaviours. The questionnaire that you recently completed is designed to identify which of these behaviours come easily to you and which ones you might find more difficult, or have to work harder to achieve. This insight into your likely strengths and weaknesses should aid your preparation for an interview.Structure of this reportThis report divides competencies that influence performance across many different jobs into 8 broad areas. Each area is described in terms of its relevance and importance to particular job functions. You can see examples of jobs where this competency area is most relevant; and examples of what it means to demonstrate this competency, or "what good looks like" are also listed. For each competency area your potential has been assessed based on the responses you gave to the questionnaire and is presented in terms of the likelihood that this area is one of your strengths. We have also included some example questions related to the 8 competency areas that you might be asked in your job interview. Competency Based Interviews usually involve situation-based questions, which target the specific behaviours that you have displayed in a previous situation that are related to this competency. To succeed in such an interview, you’ll need to have strong and relevant examples which illustrate your behaviours in the past.1Your Competency Potential ReportWhen considering the description of your competency potential, it is important to remember that it's based on the answers you gave and represents the way you see your own behaviour, rather than how your behaviour might be seen by someone else. The questionnaire is not infallible and, as with all questionnaires, its accuracy depends on how honest and candid you were when you completed it. This report summarises your potential in 8 broad areas of competence. It gives an indication of your likely strengths and areas which you may require development. It is important to remember that none of these behaviours are static and a low score means that the behaviour is less likely to come naturally to you, but can quite possibly become one of your strengths if you work on it!Report KeyThe overall likelihood of you displaying a strength in each area is shown in the bar graphs on the right hand side of the report as shown below.Competency Potential SummaryThe table below shows a summary of your competency potential in the 8 competency areas assessed. Descriptions and example interview questions for these 8 competency areas can be found on the next few pages of this report.1ABOUT THIS REPORTThe report herein is generated from the results of a questionnaire answered by the respondent(s) and substantially reflects the answers made by them. To be chosen, staff must have consistently good performance reviews and a low level of absence from work. The tour party will stay in various hotels throughout the country and will meet American RDB staff and attend various banking conferences and seminars. However, the bulk of their time will be spent in tourist-related activities such as sightseeing and travelling.1 Staff with a poor record of work attendance are less likely to be selected. true2 Work-related activities will take up most of the tour party's time.falseComplaints from customers who feel they have received poor service from any of our telesales staff must be forwarded to the Sales Manager or her assistant. The **plaints about incorrect invoices must be sent to the Finance Manager, unless the value of the error is greater than $10,000, in which case **plaint should be redirected to the Finance Director. These procedures have been implemented to improve the former state of affairs, whereby no-one was directly accountable for **plaints, and problems often had to be resolved by the Managing Director.3 Previously, no-one had official responsibility for dealing **plaints.can't say4 Most **plaints are concerned with the invoicing procedure.can't sayJob-sharing is a system whereby two or more people share one job, each individual working a certain proportion of the overall working week. Job-sharing arrangements are available in about 20% of companies, but mostly on an informal basis. Interestingly, participation is greatest amongst administrative staff and is often associated with either easing child care responsibilities or helping staff to look after elderly relatives.5 Job-sharing is becoming **mon in companies.can't say6 Job-sharing is most prevalent among administrative staff.true7 People who have children enjoy job-sharing more than others.trueInternet shoppers are at an increased risk of both fraud and theft due to a number of factors. Amongst them are both a decrease in a means of reliable identification and an increase in the use of websites for monetary transactions whether from online reservations, internet banking, or other types of business. This fraud is increasing in severity and frequency in areas such as false business websites, telesales and online shopping and is now a more serious problem than ever before. One solution to this problem would be to limit internet transactions to websites authorised by the banks8 By restricting internet transactions to only websites authorised by the banks, a decrease in internet fraud might be seen.can't say 9 The increased risk of fraud and theft to internet shoppers is wholly due to a decrease in a means of reliable identification and an increase in the use of the internet for online banking.falseA recent study investigating the effects of stress at work argues that stress management programs should be included in all organisational development policies as a key step in helping to fight absenteeism from work and work-related stress. The Confederation of Work and Industry states that it is essential to counter work-related stress to beat higher absenteeism from jobs, and that most work stress arises from poor management. Stress management strategies are currently excluded from organisational development policies by many businesses, and **panies are unlikely to allow organisational development in the area of stress management10 Nearly all businesses incorporate stress management strategies in their policy. false11 Many smaller businesses will not permit policies for absenteeism from work.can't sayAn ever-increasing amount of time is spent each year on staff assessment, and the benefits can be numerous. An appraisal can be informative, shedding light on areas of good performance; it can be constructive in that it can give employees an opportunity to consider areas for development within the job; and it can also be motivating by highlighting those skills, abilities and areas of knowledge that the individual has gained from the job. However, the frequency of appraisals is the focus of criticism by some people, who state that assessments do not take place at appropriate times, i.e. in time for an individual to address performance areas in time for a promotion, and therefore it is likely that half of the time spent on assessment is used ineffectively.12 The purpose of staff appraisals is purely to inform.false13 Staff assessment is one of the greatest time consuming aspects of a job.can't sayOff-shoring has been adopted by banks and other financial organisations in the West since the 1980¡¯s, but it is only in recent years that it has become popular in other industry sectors as its financial benefits over more local outsourcing have become recognised. Evidence indicates that off-shore workers have a lower incidence of failure and cost less to employ than workers based locally. Off-shore workers need less financial rewards and become **petent than local workers in a shorter space of time.14 Off-shoring has only been adopted in recent years.false15 In the West, off-shoring was the main method used for banking organisations out-sourcing their work in the 1980¡¯s.can't saySince the number of societies actively promoting environmental awareness has escalated in recent years, the implementation of campaigns is leading to a corresponding increase in involvement. However, survey data demonstrates that only one in twenty interested supporters bothers to get involved with the society concerned. This inertia typically reflects the belief that their contribution would be inconsequential, and, to a lesser extent, uncertainty about the appropriate channels to use. The data also suggested that interested followers are likely to discuss their views with other individuals. While this is a valuable means of promoting environmental awareness, it would be more beneficial to get involved with the societiesthemselves.16 Uncertainty over the appropriate channels to use is the main reason that supporters do not get involved in the campaigns.false 17 Nowadays, almost all interested supporters get involved in the campaigns.can't sayMinimum wage policies, first introduced in the service industry and leading to a reduction in employee exploitation, were the result of numerous studies. The studies confirmed that a national minimum wage is an important parameter in employee security, and campaigners were rewarded with key backing from worker¡¯s unions. This provided the support required to drive through Employment Relations programmes in many agricultural and industrial sectors, culminating in the creation of the Low Pay Commission. This has been vital in attracting collaboration from major corporations which have previously resisted the pressure to improve income stability.18 The Low Pay Commission has played an important part in obtaining support from **panies.true19 Employee exploitation is the key concern of most workers¡¯ unions.can't say20 The creation of the Low Pay Commission was the first step in the process of agricultural and industrial minimum wage policies.falseUntil 1995, the use of bicycles had remained virtually static for many years. However, in recent years the number of people using bicycles has grown with increasing pressure from environmentalists, transport agencies and health officials. The trend has been to produce more fashionable bicycles in a variety of styles, lighter cycles, and **fortable cycles. The diversity of models has increased enormously, though their general shape has not changed radically.21 There has been an increasing pressure from transport agencies to use bicycles.true22 There is now a greater diversity of bicycles available than before 1995.trueStevens' Supplies, one of the oldest established home **panies, is stepping up the capacity of its telephone order handling system and its customer service levels, having invested in a new telephone system.**pany has reported a dramatic increase in the amount of business done, especially over the telephone, in the last six years. Telephoneordering now accounts for over 60% of all orders, and **pany plans to continue investment in telephone technology in the future. Following the successful introduction of the "toll free" telephone service which was designed to encourage even more customers to make telephone orders, customers may soon be able to place orders directly from a **puter connected to a telephone system.23 Telephone ordering at Stevens' Supplies will continue to grow over the next few years.can't say24 Most home **panies are investing in telephone technology.can't saySaga Stores enjoys an international reputation for quality and style. Nowhere is this more important than in the dress and appearance of its staff. **pany sets minimum standards of appearance which are demanded of all shop floor staff, although some departments have specific additional requirements. Hair must be clean, tidy and well cut at all times. With very few exceptions, such as "Designer Corner", which operates a different staff dress code reflecting their particular style, business dress must be worn. Women should wear tailored suits, with a white or cream blouse. Men should wear smart trousers together with a white shirt and jacket.25 Company policy concerning appearance does not cover just clothing.true26 Business dress must be worn by staff in all departments.false27 Women in "Designer Corner" are allowed to wear jewellery.can't sayIn order to qualify for prizes, tickets must be purchased according to certain restrictions. People who think they have won must stake their claim in person and produce not only the winning ticket but a valid piece of identification within two weeks following the draw. Tickets must bear an official retailer's stamp next to the purchaser's name to qualify. Publicity shots of the winner might also be requested. Only in the unlikely event that it is suspected that a ticket could have been stolen would the holder be questioned about the retail outlet where the ticket was purchased. Those refusing to have their photograph taken for the records will automatically forfeit their prize. Criminal proceedings would ensue following any suspicion of foul play.28 Claims can be made up to a month after the draw.false29 Criminals are likely to work together to steal tickets.can't sayMost employees are attracted by the job-related perks and many employers nowadays provide fringe benefits for their staff. Unfortunately, the majority of these perks are taxable, depending in some cases on an employee's position within an organisation and their level of remuneration. The emphasis in the taxation system means that it is usually to an employee's advantage to be given fringe benefits which would otherwise have to be paid for from taxed net income. The wide variety of fringe benefits includes subsidised meals, staff parties and access to sports facilities.30 Senior managers' fringe benefits will be taxed more heavily than those of non-managerial staff.can't say31 It is always more cost effective to take fringe benefits than to pay for them out of net income.can't sayResearchers in Pegasus Electronics found that a fifth of all sick leave in **pany was stress-related. Very high work demands led to stress, but boring jobs were equally detrimental. The Board of Directors therefore decided to take corrective action by getting supervisors to re-organise the production lines so that all their employees had greater control over the rate of production. In addition, all supervisors are now being trained to recognise the early signs of stress-related problems and there is a possibility that if this training proves successful, remaining staff may follow suit shortly.32 At Pegasus, most sick leave is due to stress-related illness.false33 The action taken has been shown to reduce stress-related sick leave.can't say34 Pegasus Electronics has now decided that all staff must be trained to recognise the signs of stress-related illness.falseOutdoor training programmes are becoming increasingly popular as a form of development activity for sales staff. A key strength of these courses is that they bring together individuals of varying ages, from a wide range of organisations and backgrounds. Participants spend up to two weeks in relatively isolated parts of the country, completing activities such as rock-climbing, sailing and bushwalking. These courses are designed to improve a number of skills, such as communication and team-working, and are also supposed to improve an individual's self-awareness. Opinions vary about the effectiveness of these courses, with some participants giving very positive feedback about their usefulness and othersexpressing reservations about how transferable the skills learnt are to the workplace.35 Participants normally find that **munication skills improve can't say36 The participants who benefit the most from the courses also enjoy them the most.can't sayA few 'Safe As Houses' alarms have been redesigned in an attempt to reduce the large number of complaints where alarms have sounded by accident. One of the new types of alarm is less sensitive than its predecessors. Studies have shown that these newer alarms are rarely activated for no apparent reason. 'Safe As Houses' still sells a number of the original, sensitive alarm systems, because the increase in threshold for motion detection means that the new style alarms may fail to register a break-in where limited force is being used.37 All of **pany's alarm systems are now less sensitive.false38 Sensitive alarms sounding inappropriately have irritated some people in the past.can't say39 The new alarm systems should reduce the number of accidental soundings by at least a half.can't sayDespite an auspicious launch, sales of the year-old Lianda model plummeted last month to an all time low. Production levels were sustained in anticipation of the traditional seasonal peak and then slashed radically once this failed to materialise. The collapse is largely blamed upon inept promotion and the car is now solely available through special order from Head Office. The announcement shortly after launch of the six month minimum waiting time, led to an upsurge in complaints from customers and is thought to have dissuaded plenty of potential buyers, some of whom opted for the more expensive Especial from the same stable. Talk of **pany's imminent collapse, however, is unfounded and is thought to be propaganda spread by less profitable rivals.40 Parts of the plant lay temporarily idle after Lianda production was cut.true41 **pany will be forced to close very shortly.can't sayOfficelink, an office equipment superstore, has grown by leaps and bounds since it opened in 1996. This success has been attributed to a combination of low prices, comprehensive stock and its locationin the middle of a large and thriving business park. Until recently, the stock control procedures failed to keep up with the increase in business, and customers **plained that staff could not find requested stock items. Management attempted to **e this problem by authorising the purchase of the latest stock **puter software. This software now keeps track of client credit accounts and logs all purchases according to specific stock codes. It will also automatically re-order stock once supplies fall below the pre-defined levels, which can now afford to be lower than ever.42 Officelink will have to increase prices to cover the cost of the new stock **puter system.can't say43 In the past, stock control was done manually.can't sayA company's environmental policy typically has a profound impact upon its standing in **munity. There are legal regulations, with stiff penalties attached, **pel managers to ensure that any waste products are disposed of without contaminating the air or water supplies. In addition, employees can be educated about the **mercial and social benefits of recycling paper and other substances produced as by-products of the manufacturing process. One popular method for gaining staff co-operation is the internal incentive scheme. These often target teams rather than individuals, since the interdependence of staff organising any reprocessing, masks the importance of a given player's role.44 The regard held for an organisation may be affected by **mitment to environmental issues.true45 Managers breaking environmental regulations receive heavy personal fines.can't say46 Certain organisations reduce profits by exceeding statutory environmental requirements.can't sayStaff training can have a number of objectives. It can be educational, aiming to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of the trainees; it can be a vehicle to **pany policy or values; or, finally, it can raise levels of staff satisfaction by ensuring employees are able to improve their existing skills. Lively debate usually accompanies the allocation of expenditure to the annual training budget. Critics argue that certain costs associated with such programmes could be scaled down, and those courses which are unproductive could be axed.47 Training sharpens an organisation's competitive edge.cant'say48 Knowledge-based training is the most effective form forstaff.can't say49 The amount of money spent on training tends to be unpopular with some people.true50 Training programmes are usually only axed after modification has proved unsuccessful.falseMerchandising tactics, which address the effective packaging and positioning of goods, have long been deployed within retailing to stimulate customer demand. Unprecedented changes in consumer buying habits and the escalating sophistication of technology have encouraged the beverage retailers to make up lost ground and to adopt the merchandising philosophy wholeheartedly after years of neglect. The principal penalty incurred by past caution is that decision making is now hampered by the scarcity of good quality merchandising research. Nevertheless some retailers have decided to move to glass-fronted chilled cabinets to display their beverages. Alternatively, such products are placed on shelves at eye level or, potentially more tempting still, near checkouts.51 The application of merchandising principles is a recent innovation within general retailing.false52 Beverage retailers have a wealth of merchandising information to guide them.can't say53 The shelves near checkouts are often positioned at eye level.false54 In supermarkets, goods placed near checkouts sell best.can't say。

An international protocol on climate change, ratified by the EU, Japan, Canada, and now Russia, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the more serious ramifications of global warming. Current attention is focused on the progression of complementary technologies that will give us low-cost renewable energy over the short and longer-term. This will provide the economic incentive to replace fossil fuels in developed and developing countries, leading to a more pervasively low-carbon economy. This is crucial if we are to slow the rate of climate change which can have devastating effects on the flora and fauna of our planet.2. It was originally believed that the universe had been created only a few thousand years ago. However, there are **ings of this theory.Firstly, it was discovered in 1923 that many of the faint patches of lightin the night sky are from other galaxies larger than our own. The light was so faint because it took millions or billions of years to reach us, which meant that the universe could not have been just a few thousand years old. Secondly, astronomers had learned, by analysing the light projected by other galaxies that all other galaxies are moving away from us. Moreover, the farther they are from us, the faster they are moving away. This means that the universe is expanding. These **pletely changed discussionssurrounding the origin of the universe.3. Long term Yoga enthusiasts benefit more while sufferingfrom fewer symptoms of modern day life; they experience less stress, insomnia and high blood pressure and are less susceptible to common complaints such as tiredness and back pain. They are also likely to recommend it to other new health enthusiasts. Fitness fanatics usually gauge their performance on the basis of strength and stamina. They rarely study another factor that reflects how much is gained - the individual'swellbeing.5. However, since then the advances in technology, science and programmeproduction expertise have been phenomenal. The production of programmes has advanced exceptionally fast in the last 20 years and due to popular demand, television has become of significant importance to domestic life. The huge variety of programmes produced for television has influenced the types of audience attracted, such as the film enthusiasts of the 80's, sporting advocates and those attracted by information media such as the news. Plasma screens have now been developed to improve the quality of television for the viewer, and the increasing demand for smaller handheld televisions are a reflection of the increasing popularity of television technology.12. For most people, any reference to hypnosis brings to mind images of individuals involved in amusing, and often out of character, behaviour. However, hypnosis is also a topic of scientific research. Research by scientists over the last few decades has revealed ways in which memoryprocesses and processes involved in pain perception can be changed using hypnosis. It has also been found that hypnotic suggestions can regulateactivity in identifiable sections of the brain and can contribute to the effective management of cognitive conflict. Findings from several related brain imaging studies, for example, have suggested that people underhypnosis can exhibit reduced levels of brain activity in both visual areas and the anterior cingulate cortex. Disparate research has alreadyestablished the role of these brain structures in the monitoring ofcognitive conflict.13. Horticulturalists must take into account many factors when planning the reproduction of plants. Propagation by seed is the **mon methodemployed as it is relatively easy and has a good expected rate ofgermination, although this can drop if the seed has been packaged for more than a year. Many seeds can remain viable for up to 5 years if properlystored, as their protective coats prevent sprouting until ideal growing conditions exist. External conditions can be manipulated in order to bring seeds out of dormancy and hasten germination. However, even with optimal conditions, some seeds are reluctant to sprout.14. Significant advances in float furnace design and operation, in the development of **positions and in the glass forming process itselfhave all played a role in the optimisation of glass manufacturing. Forexample, thermodynamic modelling assists in the enhancement of glass composition and offers control over devitrification characteristics, and studies examining burner design, to ensure flames have maximum luminosity and impinge on the glass at the correct angle, aid the minimisation of fuel consumption. The exploitation of such advanced research allows glass manufacturers to reduce their expenditure on fuel, decrease their defect rates and produce glass of the highest quality, all of which are important if they are to retain **mercial standing and customer loyalty.15. When implementing a change programme, the more attention an organisation pays to the 'people side' of the business, the more successful the initiative is likely to be. Considering these human elements ensures more employees understand the changes and thus support them; staff are more motivated and are therefore less likely to leave. They are also more likely to disseminate the message to others in a positive light. Most organisations focus initially on the process elements of the change initiative. Only very infrequently is the initial focus upon this equally important part of the change process: the people.16. Financial fraud is a crime of growing significance. In 2003, 8% ofreported business-related crimes were frauds, averaging ?35,000 in losses.By 2005, whilst financial fraud was found to be the sixth-most frequentcrime, it was the third-highest concern amongst business leaders.Researchers found that globally, Internet-based fraud was risingdramatically, accounting for two-thirds of all reported fraud cases in 2005. The main reasons for the frauds included poor supervision and lack of proper division of duties, inadequate control of access to systems, and poor authorisation controls. Internal detective measures uncovered less than half of the cases, with an increasing number of cases being discovered by accident. One third of the cases **mitted by managerial staff, whileone-half **mitted by non-managerial staff.17. The cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is the afterglowfrom the Big Bang, and weak as it may be today, these primeval microwaveshold valuable information about fundamental properties of the earlyuniverse. Slight differences, or anisotropies, in the brightness and polarization of the CMB reveal clues about the nature of the primordialplasma: that the discrepancies exist at all shows that the plasma was not perfectly uniform. The variations in brightness seen in the CMB reflect differences in the density of the primordial plasma, whereas the anisotropic polarization reveals information about the dynamics of the early universe, such as the movement of material and the number of gravitational waves. The CMB, however, is not the only source of polarized microwaves and the cosmological polarisation must thus be measured at different wavelengths so as to isolate them from foreground signals.18. As in the tradition of haute couture catwalks and magazines, an effective shop window must display items in such a way that engenders customers' aspirations to lead a certain lifestyle and consequentlystimulate their desire to purchase the merchandise. Financial success mayalso depend on how frequently the window display is altered, as this will encourage customers to regularly enter the shop to inspect new stock. It may also induce an anxiety that the pieces may be removed imminently and thereby increase customer spending, as well as catch the attention of passers by because a constantly evolving window display suggests something exciting is happening. The display items should be large and bright in colour to ensure that they are visible from a distance and a themed window (e.g. Christmas) often improves sales considerably. A common drawback of placing items in a shop window is that they are more liable to be stolen.19. The prospect of accepting negative feedback about ourselves elicits conflict as we need to assess the immediate emotional costs of negativeinformation about ourselves against the long-term benefits of gaining useful feedback. Studies have confirmed what most managers seem to have known already: that the mood we are in whilst receiving feedback often influences the relative weight people assign to emotional costs versus theinformational benefits of receiving negative feedback. The studies that have been carried out have demonstrated that positive moods can function as a buffer and therefore enable people affected in this way to both accept as well as better handle the emotional costs of negative self-related information.。

Verbal Reasoning
True
False
Cannot Say
Crude oil from regions around the Dead Sea was used as early as 1000 BC for ancient Egyptian
mummification, but it wasn't until 1853 that the process of oil distillation was discovered and wesaw the advent of the modern history of oil. The first oil mine was constructed the following year.Oil quickly took over from coal as being the world's principal fuel in the mid 1950's. Oil is nowused to run the vast majority of vehicles and is a key ingredient in many chemicals used inindustry. However, concerns have been raised that as oil is a limited resource its usage as an
Question: Good forestry cannot prevent loss of human life.
TrueFalseCannot Say
False
Further to this, damage to property, human injury and evendeath can be prevented withtheapplication ofgood forestry.
Question: Reforestation is the most important aspect of modern forestry.
TrueFalseCannot Say
Cannot Say
Question : Modern forestry can be used to aid planting and reforestation.
TrueFalseCannot Say
True
Reforestationis one way to applymodern forestrywhereby trees areplantedand cultivated in a designated area.
A divide has emerged between those supporting and those opposing active forest management asconcerns about the environmental problems resulting from deforestation have increased. There iscurrently a large volume of research regarding the management of forest ecosystems, tree breedingand the selection of species and varieties. This was partially related to the passing of forestry lawsin the majority of Western nations in the 20th century which was in response to growingconservationist social ideals and the technological advances of logging companies. Reforestationis one way to apply modern forestry whereby trees are planted and cultivated in a designated area.Further to this, damage to property, human injury and even death can be prevented with theapplication of good forestry.
