When she was a little girl, Margarita Engle spent her summers in Cuba, where she says she fell in love with nature.
Engle, 66, was born to a Cuban mother and an American father. Her annual visits to the Caribbean island from her home in California shaped her life and inspired her to become a poet and writer. The Poetry Foundation recently named her its Young People’s Poet Laureate, a role Engle plans to use to encourage children and teenagers to write down their feelings.
Magic happens when you put your emotions(情感) in writing, she said.
Engle says she has always liked poetry. At age 6, she wrote her first poem about nature. After looking around while taking a walk one day in California, she wrote a rhymed poem about the shapes of hills. As a teen, she wrote sonnets (十四行诗) about nature and stories about people in Cuba.
Some of her books explore the island, its people, markets and landmarks. Her new picture book,"All the Way to Havana," features American cars from the 1940s and 1950s. "Forest World", a new novel, introduces Edver to

Pushy parents and teachers who "hothouse"the under-5s risk causing damage to the children's long-term development, a leading education expert said.
Lilian Katz, Professor of Education at the University of Illinois, told that four-year-olds engaged in reading and writing went on to perform worse academically than those engaged in imaginative learning. They scored higher in tests at the age of 5,but children whose first year at school was stimulating(使人兴奋的)outstripped them years later.
The findings suggest that the government's structured approach to early-years learning could be storing up problems for children. They also raise serious questions about the plan for all children to be able to read by the age of 6.
In many countries formal teaching does not start until children are 6 or 7 and have improved their social and manual skills. Children start learning to read and write at 6 in the United States, France and Germany, and at 7 Finland and Sweden.
Professor Katz said that in many schools the courses were"boring children to tears". Much academic teaching required children to learn by memorizing pieces of information out of context, she said. Teaching in reception class should instead allow children to develop their intellect by exploring their environments and asking questions.
"Research suggests the benefits of formal academic instruction for four and five-year-olds seem to be promising when they are tested early, but considerably less so in the long term. When these children arc followed over a period of three or more years, those who had early experience in more intellectually engaging curricula were more likely to do well in school than their peers, who had received early academic instruction. "She advocates teaching children through first-hand experience and play, in mixed-aged classes. This can include puppet shows, drawing or running a pretend shop in the classroom.
8. According to the passage, those who "hothouse"the under-5s would probably______.

D. should include teaching children social and manual skills
11. Which of the following is NOT the opinion of Lilian Katz?
A. Children should be taught through first-hand experience.

In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的)people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of"lawlessness"in the world.
The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2019 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.
"I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,"says Gin."I've been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don't see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom."
"I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,"continues Gin."I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly."His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.
12. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?
A. They are separated from the modern world.
B. They often ignore the Guianese law.
C. They seldom follow the French law.
D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.
13. Gin introduced the special world of the indigenous Guianese as _________.
A. a tour guide
B. a photographer
C. a film director
D. a geographer
14. What is Gin's attitude towards the lives of the indigenous Guianese?
A. Cautious.
B. Appreciative.
C. Uninterested.
D. Doubtful.
15. What does the underlined word"it"in the last paragraph refer to?
A. The uncivilized world.
B. The self-supporting hunting.
C. The modern French lifestyle.
D. The French Republic.

Top Poetry Writing Tips
Tips 1: Poetry involves work, rest and play.
16It involves hard work, especially in the early stage when you are deciding on the overall form and tone of the poem, and getting the bones of it onto the page. But writing poetry should be a playful activity, too. Have fun playing around with the language, the ideas and the music inside the poem.
Tip 2: 17
Poetry has been defined as "the best words in their best order". Choose your words carefully for their sounds and meaning. But poetry is also about silence. Just as the white space on the page is needed to shape the pattern of words, so the thoughts that are left unsaid, the pauses, the quiet hints, will add to something extra to your poem. 18If you have created enough solid stepping stones in words and thoughts, then the reader will follow you to the end of the poem.
Tips 3: 19
Poets often turn to writing a poem when they experience a strong emotion and have the need to express it. The reading of other people's poetry can also give comfort or a sense that you are not alone in how you are feeling. But be careful not to swamp your poem with abstract emotions and don't tell your readers how to think or feel.
Tip 4: Writing poetry can be difficult to start and hard to let go.
It is often difficult to know how to start a poem, but the trick is to recognize the beginnings of them, in everyday life. 20They can start from remembering a funny conversation that you've overheard at the bus stop; yesterday's nightmare; a secret you've been told; or an interesting postcard that you notice in a shop. If you catch yourself thinking about something for more than a minute or two, that's when you reach for a pen and some paper and starting jotting down(匆匆记下) thoughts, words and phrases.
A. Don’t be scared of the gaps that you leave.
B. Poetry needs an emotion and a control of it.
C. Poetry requires both words and silence.
D. Writing a good poem rarely comes easily.
E. Poetry sets the scene for readers to step into.
F. Poems don’t have to come from exciting events.
G. You must write your feelings and views with passion.
