PRODUCTIVITY
“It’s added value that I need most.”
Never before have suppliers of
cutting materials and tools been
confronted with this request on a
concerted effort to tap fresh cost-
saving potentials in the metal-cutting
processes. SPK Cutting Tools division
at CeramTec AG en j oys a solid
reputation as value-adding partner
for industry especially in the area
of high-performance machining of
cast iron and hardened steel.
With its ceramic cutting materials
and vast application expertise, SPK is
now regarded as a worldwide pion-
eer and trailblazer when it comes to
productivity improvement and cost-
cutting innovations.
In the continuous production of cast iron
parts,c eramic s are established as ideal
cutting materials. In fact, an ever closer
interac tion between the materials, the
tool holders, and the mac hine tool has
meant c ontinuous improvements in the
use of c eramic s in high-performanc e
environments.
As in the past, new developments from
SPK ceramic cutting materials are playing
a leading role in cost-saving potentials.
There are two main dire c tions of
progress: New c erami c grades for
addressing spec ific applic ation with the
new SL 506 and SL 508 grades.
Secondly, innovations such as the double
notch in the solid CBN cutting material
for tapping added cost-saving potentials.
In order to fully exploit these develop-
ments, innovative c lamping princ iples
are ne essary. The requirements of

stability, reliability while equally c oping

erosion, the compounding of tolerances,
the size and positioning of the clamping
finger are of great importanc e in the
metal c utting appli c ation. IKS-PRO
(patent pending) is a c lamping system
SPK have c reated that addresses these
requirements to an unpre c edented
degree. The ingenious c ombination of
the IKS-PRO c lamping system and new
utting material suc h as SL506 and
SL508 allows c ustomers to mac hine
more produc tively and c ost effic iently
than before, offering overall enhanc ed
competitiveness.
All-purpose cutting material/tool
solutions are a thing of the past. The
only way to achieve the enhanced
productivity and cost reductions
necessary to sustain competitiveness
is for variables, such as the cutting-
materials, the tool holder, the work-
piece and the machine tool to be
closely matched.
There are often various approac hes for
machining a specific part or component.
Alongside the tec hnic ally most viable,
cost-saving techniques are of increasing
signific anc e to the c ustomer. However,
the issue is not whether technical or eco-
nomic al c riteria enjoy predominanc e
but, if the two sets of c riteria c ombine
for maximum effectiveness.
In order to achieve such a result, the two
sets of criteria must interact to solve the
spec ific metal-c utting problem. This
often poses c omplex problems for the
engineering departments. This is an
area in which CeramTec customers enjoy
an important advantage sinc e they are
fully able to rely on SPK Engineering
Department, experienced in overcoming
hallenges and as your value-adding
partner and skilled in generating cutting
tool solutions that are both tec hnic ally
and economically superior.
The servic es available from this depart-
ment encompass:
•Ceramic grades tailored to the
material to be machined
•Speed and feed recommendations,
taking into account machine tools,
materials to be machined and cutting
materials
•Toolholders designed to optimize
machine tool cycle times.
The department’s efforts are completed
by smart CAD/CAM systems that ensure
optimum results, from the design of the
tool-holders through to production roll-
out. The SPK approach allows us to offer
our customers cost-efficient cutting solu-
tions, making sure that SPK c ustomers
maintain and suc c essfully extend their
competitive edge in today’s competitive
market place.
