ABenjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel's hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush. The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing. The cat's lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin's cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit. In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (风景) painting. William Williams, a wellknown painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nineyearold boy decided then that he would be an artist.1.What is the text mainly about?A.Benjamin's visit to Philadelphia.B.Williams' influence on Benjamin.C.The beginning of Benjamin's life as an artist.D.The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington.2.What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest?A.The cat would be closely watched.B.The cat would get some medical care.C.Benjamin would leave his home shortly.D.Benjamin would have real brushes soon.3.What did Pennington do to help Benjamin develop his talent?A.He took him to see painting exhibitions.B.He provided him with painting materials.C.He sent him to a school in Philadelphia.D.He taught him how to make engravings.BDevon Gallagher, a college graduate from Philadelphia, wants the world to know exactly where she's been during her worldwide vacation in a special way.The traveler, who was born with a bone disease, had her right leg amputated (截肢) at the age of four. Although the amputation caused setbacks for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as nothing short of inspiration for living her best life.To spread that message, Gallagher has taken to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the globe, but instead of simply using a geotagging, she writes her location across her artificial leg before taking a picture. Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, posing with a waffle in Brussels, taking spectacular pictures in Athens and enjoying a river cruise in Budapest, all with the wellknown locations written on her artificial leg.“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One day I had a sudden thought to get a chalkboard,” Gallagher said. “My mum and grandmother weren't too keen on the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told me to go for it, so I did.”Gallagher said people often stare when she's writing on her leg, but once she shares the photos, she receives only positive feedback. “My leg hasn't stopped me from doing anything I've wanted to do,” she said. “I don't know if it's my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, but regardless, I've been able to keep up with my peers and lead a pretty great life.”Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. And if life gives you an artificial leg, make art.4.What message did Gallagher want to spread in her specialway?A.She enjoys her traveling across the globe.B.She suffers little from her leg amputation.C.She looks on her misfortune as another form of blessing.D.She has exactly fallen in love with posting photos online.5.What does the word “which” underlined in Paragraph 4 refer to?A.The Continent.B.The pictures.C.The leg. I wouldn't say I'm more American than Chinese or vice versa. My character was equally molded by both cultures. For a long time, I was comfortable with being from two cultures. I was fluent in “Chinglish”.However, as I grew up, something unexpected rose, causing a parallel tension between the two corresponding cultures. During Chinese events when I was in China, the host would sometimes make fun of America. My relatives would look at me and laugh, asking me how I felt. But how could I respond to a question like that? If I said I was uncomfortable, it would just make me seem even more American in their eyes. But I couldn't pretend to laugh either. So, I often just stayed quiet and smiled.Sometimes, I'd leave China feeling less Chinese than when I went in.This past summer, on my way back to Rochester, a man at the airport kept asking my father and I where we were from. When I told him I was from the United States, he didn't seem to believe me.He then went on to ask the terrible question, “But like where are you really from, like, where were you born?” And no matter how specific our answers were, the man still seemed a little doubtful. He then went on to ask us if we knew where Tampa, Florida was and if we knew anything about it. It's moments like these when I realize that sometimes my appearance makes it hard for me to seem fully American. These experiences made me question if I was more Chinese or American.I felt like I was neither. So, if I wasn't completely one culture or the other, what was I? In China, I would feel more American, while in America, I would feel more Chinese. There was no balance between my two cultures. But this doesn't mean that I don't embrace both my identities. I love both my Chinese cultural identity and my American one. I just need to learn to love them together.8.How did the author feel about his identity at the very beginning?A.Special. B.Confident.C.Confused. D.Ridiculous.9.Why did the author feel less Chinese when he left China?A.Because he found it hard to remain quiet and have a big smile.B.Because he was unable to speak fluent Chinese at his hometown.C.Because he had lost face in front of his relatives and friends.D.Because he was treated as an American by his Chinese relatives.10.What made the man at the airport keep questioning where the author was from?A.His cultures. B.His experience.C.His look. D.His air tickets.11.What could be the best title of the passage?A.Being Culturally HomelessB.A Boy with Two IdentitiesC.A Chinese Boy Born in AmericaD.Better Chinese than AmericanDJ. K. Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day. Her Harry Potter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement. She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. He explained how he hadn't found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn't have the Internet or TV, which means there's no “digital babysitter”,and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he's loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,” Burke explains. “This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud infront of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”After hearing Burke's story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family's life and offered Burke more signed books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.12.Why did Burke thank J. K. Rowling according to the text?A.She guided him how to write a good story.B.She encouraged him when he was in trouble.C.Her books helped him through times of confusion.D.Her books helped him improve his bond with his daughter.13.What is implied in Burke's words in Paragraph 4?A.He has found it interesting to read the series.B.He was too old to understand the series better.C.He has chosen a better way of reading the series.D.He hopes to play a role in the drama in the future.14.Which word can best describe Burke's experience according to the text?A.Unique. Then, as the first black president, he fought to unite the country and organize the government. Now Nelson Mandela has set his sights on a new enemy, AIDS. On March 19 the 82-year-old, former president, hosted his second AIDS-awareness concert. He warned that 25 million people in Africa were already infected with the fatal disease.Mandela was born in a small village in South Africa in 1918. He was adopted by the chief of his tribe and could have been a chief himself and lived a happy country life. But he refused to be a chief when his people lived under racial discrimination. He was freed in 1990 and became the president of the country after the first election were held in which everyone could vote.Mandela was not only a political fighter who attacked with speeches. He was also a trained boxer and fought in the ring when he was young.“Although I did not enjoy the violence of boxing, I was interested in how one moved one’s body to protect oneself, how one used a strategy both to attack and retreat”, he wrote in his autobiography. As a skillful fighter, he chose music as his weapon against AIDS. Book 1Unit 5Nelson Mandela—a modern heroⅠ.阅读理解话题:人际关系难度星级:☆☆A day in the life of 18yearold David Lanster is full of typical teenage stuff:school, baseball practice and homework. And then he starts cooking.“Some nights I’m up until 1∶00 a.m. making pies,or even later if we’re cooking beef,”said the student at Ransom Everglades School in Florida,U.S.For the past year,Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster’s parents’ home.Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by them.Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them until the pair decided to do something nice for charity(慈善).“We got some really great Miami Heat tickets,a nice watch, and many kitchen gadgets(小器具),”Lanster said.“But we wanted to make this something positive for people other than us.”Lanster and Moran focused on Common Threads,a charity that aims to teach kids in poor communities to cook and make healthy eating choices. The young cooks ask their guests to give however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster’s parents cover their food costs. After their last 12person event,Lanster and Moran gave 1,600 to the charity. Now,they’re taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road. They have started to organize private dinner parties with a similar model:the host pays for the ingredients, and the guests make a donation to a charity of their choice.Without formal training,Lanster said he had been interested in cooking since he helped his mom in the kitchen when he was very young. He learned how to cook by reading cookbooks and watching TV programs.Outside the kitchen, the two are busy preparing their college applications.Neither of them is sure what they will do in the future, but they’ve promised their parents that they will leave professional cooking alone until they finish school.语篇解读本文讲述的是年轻人戴维·兰斯特和同学凯利·莫兰放学后举办晚宴,捐款给慈善机构的故事。
