The Time together with My FatherCIf plastic had been invented when the Pilgrims sailed from Plymouth, England, toNorth America—and their Mayflower had been stocked with bottled water andplastic-wrapped snacks, their plastic waste would likely still be around four centurieslater. Atlantic waves and sunlight would have worn all that plastic into tiny bits. Andthose bits might still be floating around the world’s oceans today, waiting to be eaten by some fish or oyster, and finally perhaps by one of us.Because p lastic wasn’t invented until the late 19th century, and its productiononly really took off around 1950, we have a mere 9.2 billion tons of the stuff to dealwith. Of that, more than 6.9 billion tons have become waste. And of that waste, a surprising 6. 3 billion tons never made it to a recycling bin—the figure that shockedthe scientists who published the numbers in 2017.No one knows how much unrecycled plastic waste ends up in the ocean, the last sink. In 2015, Jenna Jambeck, a University of Georgia engineeringearth’sprofessor, caught e veryone’s attention with a rough estimate: between 5. 3 million and14 million tons of plastic waste each year just come from coastal regions.Meanwhile, ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine(海洋的)animalsevery year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have beenaffected by it. Some are harmed visibly, stuck by abandoned things made of plastic. Many more are probably harmed invisibly. Marine species of all sizes, fromzooplankton to whales, now eat microplastics, the bits smaller than one-fifth of aninch across.“This isn’t a problem where we don’t know what the solution is,” says TedSiegler, a Vermont resource economist who has spent more than 25 years workingw how to pick up garbage. Anyone canwith developing nations on garbage. “We knodo it. We know how to deal with it. We know how to recycle.” It’s a matter of building the necessary institutions and systems, he says, ideally before the ocean turns into athin soup of plastic.28. Why does the author mention the Pilgrims in paragraph 1?A. To prove plastic was difficult to invent.B. To introduce what marine animals like eating.C. To tell the Pilgrims contributed a lot to the marine protection.D. To show plastic waste has a lasting effect on the ocean.29. What’s the main trouble marine animals face according to the text?A. Lacking protection.B. Being stuck by plastics.C. Being caught by humans.D. Treating plastics as food.30. What does Ted Siegler want to tell us in the last paragraph?A. Some people don’t know the solution of plastics waste.B. Plastics will turn the ocean into a soup of plastic.C. It’s time to take measures to deal with plastic waste.D. People should avoid using plastics to protect the ocean.31. From which is the text probably taken?A. A biology textbook.B. A travel brochure.C. An environmental report.D. A lifestyle magazine.DA study found wireless signals are able to pass through bags and suitcases tojudge the sizes of dangerous metal objects and identify them. “These items couldinclude weapons, chemicals, laptops and batteries for bombs,” the research team said on Tuesday.Research suggested that Wi-Fi can now be used to estimate the volume of liquidssuch as water, acid, alcohol and other chemicals for explosive material. And thetech could save l ives if used in museums, stadiums, theme parks or schools,” the team said, noting its design can inspect bags or luggage without being an exposure toprivacy. It uses channel state information(CSI)that is readily available in low-cost Wi-Fidevices. “This could have a great impact on protecting the public from dangerousobjects,” said Yingying Chen, a co-author of the study, “There’s a growing need forthat now. In large public areas, it’s hard to set up expensive screening equipment like what’s in airports. Manpower is always needed to check bags and we want to developa method to try to reduce manpower.”The peer-reviewed study, which recently won a best paper award at the 2018IEEE Conference on Communications and Network Security, is now published online.“Future work will continue to focus on ameliorating the accuracy of identifyingsearchers said.objects and imaging shapes and volumes,” re32. AI like this job, in which I stay with small children and from which I get the challenges and awards. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.I then found myself a job. Looking after two little girls, i t wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to wor k extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children. One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me, I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part – time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten. Now I’ve got a full – time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. The main character in My Left Foot, based on the real story of cerebral palsy (大脑性麻痹) sufferer Christy Brown, can barely move his mouth to speak, but by controlling his left foot, he’s able to express himself as an artist and poet. For his moving performance of Brown, Daniel Lewis won his first Academy Award for best actor.Shine (1996)D o you have a talent you’re afraid to share with the world? David Helfgott seemed meant from childhood to be “one of the truly great pianists,” but the pressures of performing (and pleasing his father) resulted in a plete breakdown. Ten years in a mental institution didn’t weaken Helfgott’s musical gift: When he was rediscovered, he was playing concertos in a bar. Shine received seven Oscar nominations (提名), and Geoffrey Rush won best actor for his performance of Helfgott.Life Is Beautiful (1997)Nothing’s more powerful than the love between a parent and a child. No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people: as we get older, many of us will bee less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others bee disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they bee. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability not their disability that count.28.The first paragraph points out that______.A. the number of disabled people in India is the greatestB. There still exists prejudice against the disabled which results mainly from ignoranceD. The whole society should pay due attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people31.It can be concluded from the passage that____.A. both physical and metal barriers are hard to break downB. we should take a proper attitude towards the disabledC. we should try our best to prevent disablementD. the able-bodies people will never fully understand the disabledDIf the earth's population is in growth at this rate , there will not be enough resources. By the middle of the 21st century, if present trends continue, we will have used up all the oil that drives our cars, for example. Even if scientists develop new ways of feeding the human race, the crowded conditions on the earth will make it necessary for us to look for open space somewhere else. But none of the other planets in our solar system are capable of supporting life at present. One possible solution to the problem, however, has recently been suggested by American scientist, Professor Carl Sagan.Sagan believes that before the earth's resources are pletely exhausted it will be possible to change the atmosphere of Venus and so create a new world almost as large as the earth itself. The difficult is that Venus is much hotter than the earth and there is only a tiny amount of water there.Sagan proposes that algae organisms(海藻有机体) that can live in extremely hot or cold atmospheres and at the same time produce oxygen, should be bred in condition similar to those on Venus. As soon as this has been done, the algae will be placed in small rockets. Spaceship will then fly to Venus and fire the rockets into the atmosphere .In a fairly short time, the algae will break down the carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbon. When the algae have done their work, the atmosphere will bee cooler, but before man can set foot on Venus it will be necessary for the oxygen to produce rain. The surface of the planet will still be too hot for man to land on it but the rain will eventually fall and in a few years something like earth will be reproduced on Venus.32.In the long run, the most difficult problem caused by population growth on the earth willprobably be the lack of ______.A. oilB. foodC. resourcesD. space33.Carl Sagan believes that Venus might be a living place because _____A. the days on Venus are long enoughB. it might be possible to change its atmosphereC. there is a good supply of water on VenusD. its atmosphere is the same as the earth's34.Algae are plants that can____.A. live in very hot temperatureB. live in very cold temperatureC. produce oxygenD. all of the above35. Man can land on Venus only when_______.A. it rains thereB. there is oxygenC. the atmosphere bees coolerD. the algae have done their work第二部分:七选五(每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上写出答案。

上海市2019年高考模拟7英语试题1

【题文】Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own -words as far as possible.China accounts for almost 22 percent of the world’s population and is one of the world’s largest and most rapidly growing economies. However, it has only 10 percent of the world’s total cultivated area and is having increasing difficulties in securing water for agricultural purposes.Despite population growing at an average rate of around one percent a year and its economy at around 9 percent a year since the early 1990s,China has so far maintained approximate self- sufficiency in agricultural products overall, in the sense that exports have been approximately matching imports. In fact, China has been the world’s fourth largest importer after the European Union, the United States and Japan. The ability of China's agriculture to keep pace with growing demand reflects a few key factors. Yield improvements have been achieved through more intensive use of inputs such as fertilizers, agricultural machinery and irrigation, and the introduction of advanced technologies in agricultural production. The Chinese government has had a policy of agricultural self-sufficiency. However, China's membership of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since 2001 could signal a greater preparedness to accept imports and embrace opportunities provided by export markets. Importantly, however, more than three decades of reforms have permitted the market to have a greater influence on what farmers are producing and selling. Reflecting these factors,China has been gradually shifting its agricultural production away from land intensive products, such as cereals, toward higher value, labor intensive products such as meat, fruit, vegetables, eggs, milk, fish and seafood. That is, China is producing more in line with its comparative advantage._______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________【答案】China has fed the largest population in the world with its limited cultivated land and has maintained self-sufficiency. Some uses of inputs and advanced technologies have led to agricultural improvement. Since China joined WTO, it has imported more from other countries and it also has shifted its agricultural production from low value to higher value.【解析】【分析】这是一篇概要写作。

He drove a white Ford car. Who was he ? The police found "Harvey Lowmeyer's "gun and "John Willard's "shirt, and then the white car. It was "Eric Starvo Galt's"car. So what was this man's real name? The marks on the shirt and the car sent the F. B. I. to Los Angeles. 300 detectives questioned people. At last one found a photograph of "Galt". Then detectives in Atlanta found a fingerprint. It was on a map in "Galt's"room in a small hotel. One fingerprint was enough.James Earl Ray's fingerprint was already on the F. B. I. cards. The police watched railway stations, hotels and airports. 3000 detectives were trying to find Ray---without success. The Canadian police were helping, too. They looked at 240,000 photographs in their Passport Office. Then they found one of "Ramon George Sneyd". "We gave this man a passport last month,"they said. "He went to London on 2nd May. "The man was wearing thick glasses, but he looked like Ray. Then on 8th June, a detective at London Airport saw Sneyd's name on a passenger list.It was the end of the biggest manhunt in history. Which was the murderer's real name ?(A) Ramon George Sneyd. (B) James Earl Ray(C) Eric Starvo Galt (D) John WillardDHow can we get rid of garbage() ? Do we have enough energy sources to meet our future energy needs? These are two important questions that many people are asking today. Some people think that men might be able to solve both problems at the same time. They suggest using garbage as an energy source. For a long time people buried garbage or dumped it on empty land. Now empty land is scarce. However, more and more garbage is produced each year, but garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look like coal, petroleum, or natural gas: but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels(). As we use up our fossil-fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as an energy source.Burning garbage is not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States have been burning garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby buildings. In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city's garbage each year. The amount of energy produced is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil.But there are problems in using garbage as a fuel. Garbage that burns easily, such as food scraps and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials that do not burn easily. This separation process is normally costly. Another problem is that burning garbage can pollute the air. Our fossil fuel supplies are limited. Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage piling up on the earth.82. Which of the following is NOT fossil fuel?(A) Natural gas (B) Petroleum (C) Coal (D) Tide83. People used to depose garbage by ______.(A) turning garbage into useful fossil fuel(B) burning garbage or dumping it on empty land(C) separating garbage into three types(D) shipping garbage into sea or ocean84. Why should we use garbage as an energy source?(A) Because our fossil fuel supplies are limited(B) Because garbage is more useful than fossil fuels(C) Because burning garbage can save a lot of money for us(D) Because empty land is getting more and more scarce.85. What do you think the next paragraph will talk about?(A) Some other methods of turning garbage into treasure(B) Some other benefits we can get from burning garbage(C) How much garbage we can make use of in the world(D) How to separate food scraps and paper from garbage that do not burn easily.

devote表示“投身于,致力于”,用devote oneself/one’s time to 或be devoted to,本空接了宾语,有延续性时间状语,因此用现在分词完成式做状语。

Since I entered school, my teachers have told me a lot of methods of memorizing English vocabulary. Association is a method with which we can think about a word from one to another. we want to memorize the word tree, do not remember t-r-e-e so far. We should enlarge it to the following: stick, branch, trunk, stem, leaf, shoot, root, in the tree, on the tree, pine tree, apple tree, etc. By this means, we can associate many separate words and expressions, and the result will be much better. If we have mastered good methods of learning English words, we can enlarge a greater number of them by using less time, and thus get twice the result with half the effort. We can also improve the learning efficiency. As a senior 3 student, in order to cope with the college entrance exam, I need to strengthen the memorization of English vocabulary since we can easily forget what we have learned. I will try to use all sorts of methods to help myself to memorize all the required vocabulary. Only in this way can I get a high mark in the college entrance exam.2019-2020年高考英语预测试题(9)预测题阅读理解Apple Inc co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs, counted among the greatest American CEOs of his generation, died on Wednesday at the age of 56, after a years-long and highly public battle with cancer.Mourners gathered outside his house in Palo Alto, California, and Apple stores around the world.Steve Jobs made technology fun.As tech leaders, they're really happy if they have one hit in their life.Steve Jobs has the Apple II, the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad and Pixar.Steve Jobs was a college dropout. He was adopted by a machinist and his wife, an accountant. They supported his early interest in electronics. He and his friend Steve Wozniak started Apple puter—now just called Apple —in 1976.They stayed at the pany until 1985.That year, Steve Wozniak returned to college and Steve Jobs left in a dispute with the chief executive.Mr Jobs then formed his own pany, called NeXT puter. He rejoined Apple in 1997 after it bought NeXT.He helped remake Apple from a business that was in bad shape then to one of the most valuable panies in the world today. However, Steve Jobs steppeddown as Apple's chief executive in August because of his health. He died a day after the pany released a new iPhone version that met with limited excitement.Steve left behind a pany that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.President Obama said in a statement: by building one of the planet's most successful panies from his garage, Steve Jobs exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity(独创性的).By making puters personal and putting the Internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun.The fact that he was able to redesign American merce top to bottom and across is really stunning. He probably will be considered an industrial giant on the scale of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, so one of the greatest of all time.Steve Jobs not only revolutionized technology, he also revolutionized American business.Steve Jobs was remembered as a "great visionary and leader" and a "marketing genius." 1.How did the people around the world probably feel when Steve Jobs died of cancer at the age of 56?A.Unfair. Many people think that they have to accept whatever life throws at them. They'll say, "This is my fate, my destiny. I cannot change it."Of course not! You don't have to suffer needlessly. Your destiny depends on you, not on any other external factors.I know someone who says she just accepts what life gives her because she has done everything she can to improve it. Guess what her lifestyle is? She wakes up in the morning, goes to work, es back home, relaxes, chats with people, watches TV, then goes to sleep. Next day, the same routine cycle follows.Huh! Is this what she calls "doing her best"? She believes she has tried her best and just accepts it in her heart that this is the life that God has intended for her to live; that her luck can only change if God wills it. Of course God wants us tobe happy and live our life to the fullest, but we have to do our share of exerting(运用) the effort to live the life of our dreams.Remember that you reap what you sow. You just don't sit around and wait for a million dollars to fall from the sky. You have to get off the couch, get your eyes off the TV screen, get your hands off the phone. Don’t expect your luck to change unless you do something about it. If something goes wrong, don't just regard it as a temporary setback; but use it as feedback. Learn your lesson, make the most of the situation, and do something to solve the problem. It's not enough to think positively; you also have to act positively. If someone's life is in the trouble, do you just hope and pray that things will turn out fine? Of course not! You get to do anything you can to save the person. So it is with your own life. It is not enough to hope for the best, but you have to do your best.
