All goldfish bowls are no longer allowed and dog owners must walk their dogs. This comes after a national law was passed to gibe prison sentences to people who desert cats or dogs.“ The civilization of a city can be measured by this.” Said Monica Carina, the councilor (议员) behind the new law.“It’s good to do whatever we can for our animals who in exchange for a little love fill our existence with their attention,” she told a Rome newspaper. The newspaper reported that round bowls don’t give enough oxygen for fish and may make them go blind.“Rome has tried to protect fish more than anywhere else in the world. It stands out for recognizing that fish are interesting animals who deserve (值得)our respect and compassion every bit as much as dogs and cats and other animals,” said Karin Robertson, a director of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.Last year a law was passed in Italy that gives people who desert pets big fines (罚款) and prison sentences. Since then local governments have added their own animal protection rules. The northern city of Turin passed a law in April to give pet owners fines of up to $598 if they do not walk their dogs three times a day.The new law in Rome also says that owners mustn’t leave their dogs in hot cars or cut their dogs’ tails to make them look lovelier. The law also gibes legal recognition to the “cat ladies” who feed homeless cats. In 1956, he heard for the first time Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary tale of Alice in Wonderland—the story of a Victorian girl who falls down a rabbit hole, meets a lot of funny characters and experiences all kinds of things. At that time, Blackman’s wife was suffering from progressive blindness. The story of Alice moving through the strange situations, often disheartened by various events, was similar to his wife’s experiences. It also reflected so much of his own life. All this contributed to the completion of the Alice in Wonderland paintings.Illustrator WorkshopGo straight to the experts for an introductory course in book illustration (插图). Fifty is a nice number for the states in the US or for a national speed limit, but it is not a number that I was prepared to have hung on me. Fifty is supposed to be my father’s age, but now I am stuck with this number and everything it means.A few days ago, a friend tried to cheer me up by saying, “Fifty is what forty used to be.” He had made an inspirational point. Am I over the hill? People keep telling me that the hill has been moved, and I keep telling them that the high-jump bar has dropped from the six feet I once easily cleared to the four feet that is impossible for me now.“ You’re not getting older. You’re getting better,” says Dr. Joyce Brother. This, however, is the kind of doctor who inspires a second opinion. And so, as I approach the day when I cannot even jump over the tennis net, I am moved to share some thoughts on aging with you. I am moved to show how aging feels to me physically and mentally. Getting older, of course, is obviously a better change than the one that brings you eulogies (悼词). IN fact, a poet named Robert Browning considered it the best change of all: Grow old along with me!The best is yet to be.Whether or not Browning was right, most of my first fifty years have been golden ones, so I will settle for what is ahead being as good as what has gone by. I find myself moving toward what is ahead with a curious blend (混合)of both fighting and accepting my aging, hoping that the philosopher (哲学家)was right when he said, “ Old is always fifteen years from now.”59 The author seems to tell us in Paragraph 1 that ___________A time alone will tellB time goes by quicklyC time will show what is rightD time makes one forget the past60 When the author turned fifty, people around him _____.A tried to comfort himB got inspirations from himC were friendlier with himD found him more talkative61 The author considers his fifty years of life __________.A peacefulB ordinaryC satisfactoryD regretful62 We can infer from the passage that ____________.A the old should lead a simple lifeB the old should face the fact of agingC the old should take more exerciseD the old should fill themselves with curiosity BACBDIn meditation (冥想), people sit quietly and focus their attention on their breath. As they breathe in and out, they attend to their feelings. As thoughts go through their minds, they let them go. Breathe. Let go. Breathe. Let go.According to a recent study at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, three months of training in this kind of meditation causes a marked change in how the brain allocates(分配) attention. In appears that the ability to let go thoughts that come into mind frees that brain to attend to more rapidly changing things and events in the outside world. Expert meditators are better than other people at catching such fast-changing stimuli (刺激), like facial expressions. The study provides evidence for changes in the workings of the brain with mental training. People can learn and improve abilities of all sorts with practice, everything from driving to playing the piano. The study has shown that meditation is good for the brain. It appears to reduce pressure and promote a sense of well-being.In an experiment, 17 volunteers with no meditation experience in the experimental group spent three months meditating 10 to 12 hours a day. A control group also with no meditation experience meditated for 20 minutes a day over the same period. Both groups were then given the tests with two numbers in a group of letters. As both groups looked for the numbers, their brain activity was recorded.Everyone could catch the first number. But the brain recordings showed that the less experienced meditators tended to grasp the first number and hang onto it, so they missed the second number. Those with more experience gave less attention to the first number, as if letting it go, which led to an increased ability to grasp the second number. This shows that attention can change with practice.Just ask Daniel Levision, who meditated for three months as part of the study. “ I am a much better listener,” he said. “ I don’t get lost in my own personal reaction to what people are saying.”63 The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.A feelingsB mindsC peopleD thought64 Meditators manage their daily tasks better because they ________.A are given less pressureB allocate their attention betterC have more stimuli for lifeD practice them more frequently65 In the experiment, volunteers doing meditation for longer hours________.A were more likely to catch both of the numbersB were used to memorizing numbers in groupsC usually ignored the first number observedD paid more attention to numbers than to letters66 The study proves that_________.A meditation improves one’s healthB brain activity can be recordedC human attention can be trainedD meditators have a good sense of hearingDBACEWhen we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term. They will also experience fear.Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership. The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our won character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation. Today’s work place is all about relationships as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work.. They know the pay check is not the single most motivation factor in the work life of most people. The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence—knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.67 An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when __________.A he is forced to do thingsB he cannot work at his bestC he feels his brain shut downD he thinks of his work as too heavy68 Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A People tend to associate leadership with fearB Working conditions affect people’s physical healthC Good relationship is the key to business successD Smart people are more functional in the work place69 To positively influence employees, a leader should first of all _______.A provide better suggestionsB develop his won personalityC give his employees a pay raiseD hide his own emotion of fear70 Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to ____________.A provide a variety of projects for employeesB help raise employees’ living standardsC give employees specific instructionsD deal wisely with employees’ emotionsACBD第四部分书面表达请根据以下提示,以Advertisement为标题,写一篇120词左右的英语短文.1) 广告成了人们生活中不可或缺的点缀2)有的广告走向极端3)你对广告的看法Possible version:AdvertisementAdvertisements appear everywhere in modern society. When you walk along the streets, you can see large boards with pretty girls smiling at you. You read newspapers, and see half of the pages covered with ads. You turn on TV, and you see commercial advertisements again. Whether you like it or not, advertisements fill your life.In order to attract more customers, advertisements will sometimes go to extremes. Advertisements use every possible means in producing their announcements. For example, to advertise a certain food, advertisers will employ an actor to sit at a table and eat up their seemingly delicious food product while they film him.Although advertisements enable you to make decisions quickly, sometimes they can causelots of trouble. There are always many of them and they make you forget what you are sitting there for.。

While her success in college and law school led to a high-profile(备受瞩目) job, she said, she ended up leaving to focus on public service.“My message to all of you today is this:Do not waste a minute living someone else’s dream,”she said. “It takes a lot of real work to discover what brings you joy… and you won’t find what you love simply by checking boxes or padding your GPA(成绩).”She said the school reminded her of her own high school experience in Chicago. “My No.1 goal was to go to a high school that would push me and challenge me,” she said. “I wanted to go somewhere that would celebrate achievement. A place where academic success wouldn’t make me a target of bullying, but instead would be an honour.” But Mrs. Obama said pitifully that not all students have the same opportunities. “Unfortunately, schools like this don’t exist for every kid,” she said. “You are lucky.”The first lady told graduates that failure may be a part of their college lives and careers, and that how they respond to any difficulties will determine what kind of person they are. “That’s when you find out what you’re really made of in those hard times,” she said. “But you only do that if you’re willing to put yourself a position where you might fall.”Overcoming difficulties has been the hallmark(特征) of many great people, she said. “There’s this guy Barack Obama… he lost his first race for Cong ress, and now he gets to callhimself my husband.” The first lady joked:“I could take up a whole afternoon talking about his failures.”71. To help him win the voteB. To be an example of overcoming difficultiesC. To give advice on how to be a great manD. That's when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio parked across a railway line. Second later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks. Ceely's near miss from the accident made the news because she blamed it on her GPS device(导航仪).She had never driven the route before .It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS. But it made no mention of the crossing. "I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,"she told the BBC.Who is to blame here ? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely's story in his book When Machines Fail US, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices:Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the b ook is that it’s not clear why he only focuses on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault(错误) for poor signaling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say. It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account (描写) of the advanced techniques that criminals(罪犯) use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness(意识) of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.76. What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident?A. She was not familiar with the road.B. It was dark and raining heavily then.C. The railway works failed to give the signal.D. Her GPS device didn’t tell her about the crossing77. The phrase ”near miss”(paragraph 2 ) can best be replaced by _______.A. close hitB. heavy lossC. narrow escapeD. big mistake78.Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with?A. Modern technology is what we can’t live without.B. Digital technology often falls short of our expectation.C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be.D. GPS error is not the only cause for Celery’s accident.79. In the writer’s opinion, Stevenson’s argument is________.A. one-sidedB. reasonableC. puzzlingD. well-based80. What is the real concern of the writer of this article?A. The major causes of traffic accidents and car thefts.B. The relationship between humans and technologyC.
