Taylor Swift named Time Magazine's person of the yearBy Mark SavageTaylor Swift has capped off a stellar 2023 by being named Time Magazine's person of the year. The award goes to an event or person deemed to have had the most influence on global events over the past year.Already a superstar before 2023, her career has reached new heights thanks to the Eras tour -which sees the singer perform a career-spanning 45-song set every night. In Seattle, her concerts generated seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake."It feels like the breakthrough moment of my career, happening at 33," she told Time. "And for the first time in my life, I was mentally tough enough to take what comes with that."Swift's imperial phase comes after a period where she was vilified for her positions on feminism - although her silence stemmed from nothing more sinister than a lack of confidence. After speaking out against Donald Trump and in favour of abortion rights, she hit a creative purple patch with the pandemic-era albums Folklore and Evermore.Time editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs said the US pop icon was "the rare person who is both the writer and hero of her own story", adding that Swift had "found a way to transcend borders and be a source of light".【词汇过关】请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。

On royal tours and walkabouts, she is careful to choose bright colours and small-brimmed hats, glides through crowds “like a liner”and seemingly never tires. “Oh look! She's keeled over again,”the queen once noted at a stifling-hot palace reception, spotting her then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, pale and slumped in a chair.

“It was like being taken up to the highest mountain peak to see the view, andthen being brought down, never to be there again,” said Roffe. In the first years after her win, Roffe thought, “Here I am struggling with the masses to make ends meet and get school done, seeking that extraordinary feeling again.”
Joining society at 26 can be tough. A professional athlete’s life is remarkably self-centered. You wake up taking your heart rate. You think of your own workout goals. You write down what you eat. After years of self-focus, if everything works out just right, you win. Most people will never experience a high that high. But there’s a downside.
If their stories illustrate how difficult post-gold years can be, Roffe and Turner also show why winning athletes often eventually succeed.

It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind—football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon withastonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineeringattractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a "team game". We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no " matches" between "teams" of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obvious teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physicalqualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier (滑雪手) is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of efforts, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.1. Mountaineering involves_______.A. coldB. hardshipC. physical riskD. all of the above2. The difference between a sport and a game has to do with the kind ofA. activityB. rulesC. uniformD. participants3. Mountaineering can be called a team sport becauseA. it is an Olympic eventB. teams compete against each otherC. mountaineers depend on each other while climbingD. there are 5 climbers in each team4. Mountaineers compete against_______.A. natureB. each otherB. other teams D: international standards5. The best title for the passage is_______.A. Mountaineering Is Different from Golf and FootballB. They could not vote, or even sign 12 . Their marriages were arranged by their parents, and once they were married they could not 13 property. Most of the time they were never given responsible jobs. It is 14 to think that, as far as we know, most women were happy with this situation.Today the position is quite different. Women can now vote, and choose their own husbands. In 1970 a law was 15 to give them an equal share of property in the case of divorce, and in the same year the Equal Pay Act gave them the right to equal pay with men for work of equal value.Yet despite these changes, there is no doubt that there are still great differences in 16 between men and women. Many employers maybe even the majority seem to ignore the Equal Pay Act, and the average working woman is likely to earn only about half what a man earns for the same job. Most women who do work still do 17 jobs. Only a small proportion of the countrys workers are in fact women. This small percentage is partly because of a-shortage of nurseries. If there were 18 nurseries, upto twice as many women might well go out to work. There is also great 19 in education.Only a quarter of all university students are women. Being on show is a serious business for Queen Elizabeth II who acceded to the throne 60 years ago next month.

On several occasions she has been urged to retreat behind more obtrusive layers of security. Each time she has refused with something between a joke and a motto for her six decades on the throne, telling aides: “I have to be seen to be believed.”

Yet for the 85-year-old monarch, pictured above with Prince Charles shortly before her coronation, belief requires distance, too. Younger generations of royals have kissed and told. But the queen has never given an interview. Though some of her 12 British prime ministers wereconvinced they forged a special bond during weekly audiences with their sovereign, her personal politics remain unknown.

Over the years, various aristocrats, cousins and horse-racing grandees have been more or less plausibly identified as her friends. Even among such intimates, boundaries are observed, for fear of crossing an unseen line and triggering a stare of blank, silent rebuke. “She is never—you know—not the Queen,”advises an unnamed friend, quoted in the opening lines of a newbiography by the BBC's senior political interviewer, Andrew Marr.

Yet as a constitutional monarch, ruling with the tacit consent of the majority, she is not the only judge of the trade-off between necessary display and indispensable discretion. The public have a say as well. Some of the queen's closest brushes with disaster have involved a lack of visibility, most painfully in 1997 when she remained in Scotland with the royal family after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. She only returned to London after pleas from her new, youngprime minister, Tony Blair (and lynch-mob demands to “Show Us You Care”from the tabloids).

(一些愤怒的群众在小报上叫嚣“拿出你关心的证据”)The double nature of the queen—an unusually private woman with extraordinary public duties—poses a test for all who try to write about her. Including Mr Marr's book, five new biographies have been prepared for 2012, the queen's diamond jubilee year. The authors boast of watching the queen at work, interviewing officials from the royal household and of trawling through archives. They quote family members, friends and people with a claim to know the queen.

In the process, all five biographers wrestle with the question neatly framed by their subject herself: if to see the queen is to believe in her, what vantage point allows the most authenticexperience of faith? Which queen is the most “real”, the private woman or the public figure? Each offers a different answer.
