His life history has enjoyed popular suess for more than 200 years.Franklin's education at school stopped when he was ten years old. But he never stopped learning. For him, books held the key to living happily and suessfully. They were precious gifts. In his early youth, he had a friend who worked for a bookseller. Sometimes his friend would lend him books, which he was careful to return quickly. Often he sat up in his room reading most of the night in order to return a book before his friend's employer noticed its absence. But Franklin was not a lonely scholar. For him, learning was a social experience. In his Autobiography, he tells about organizing a club called the "Junto", which met every Friday night to improve its members' minds: "The rules I made required every member, in turn, to produce one or more questions on any point of Morals, Politics, or Natural Philosophy. The question would then be discussed by the whole group. Also, once in three months, each member was required to read an article he had written on any subject he pleased."Our discussions were directed by a president and conducted as an honest search for truth. We were to avoid unpleasant arguments or a desire for victory. Any member who did not obey these rules had to pay a fine."The Junto which Franklin organized continued for many years. It was the best group for the discussion then. The questions were given to the members during the week before they were to be discussed. This encouraged the members to read carefully about each subject so that they might speak with more understanding. When the Junto was organized, before the middle of the 18th century, there were no public libraries. There was not even a good bookstore south of Boston. Franklin decided to improve this situation. Each member of the Junto owned a few books. A room had been rented in which the members held the meetings. Franklin suggested that all the members should bring their books to the room. In this way the book would be a help to all during the weekly discussion. Also, each member would be allowed to take and read at home any book be chose.Throughout his life, Benjamin Franklin continued his education, learning from human contacts as well as from books.1. 职称英语考试《理工类》模拟试题及答案0510-551、Walking to Exercise the BrainDo you think sitting and studying all the time will improve students grades? Think again. Getting some exercise may help, too.New research with older people suggests that taking regular walks helps them pay attention better than if they didn't exercise.Previous research had shown that mice learn, remember and pay attention better after a few weeks of working out on a running wheel. Mice that exercise have greater blood flow to the brain than those who don't. Their brain cells also make more connections.Neuroscientists (神经科学家) from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign wanted to find out if the same thing is true for people. First, they measured the physical fitness of 41 adults, ages 58 to 77, after each person walked I mile. Then, participants looked at arrows on a computer screen and had touse computer keys to show which way one particular arrow was pointing.Adults who were physically fit were faster at the arrow task, and their answers were just as accurate as their less - fit peers, the researchers found. The fitter participants also had more blood flow to a part of their brain responsible for paying attention and making decisions. In a second study, 15 elderly people who completed a 6 - month aerobic - training (有氧运动) course were faster at attention tasks compared with 14 seniors who just did stretching and toning (韵律操) exercises for the same amount of time. So, even going for a walk every 2 or 3 days for just 10 to 45 minutes can help. That should be good news for the elderly. The effects of exercising on the brains of younger people haven't been studied yet. Still, it can't hurt to take occasional breaks and go for a walk or run around with friends. Whatever you do, though, don't try to read and walk at the same time. You could end up hurting yourself! The first study on 41 elderly people found ______.【单选题】A.the less - fit participants did arrow tasks fasterB.the fitter participants did arrow tasks fasterC.the less - fit participants gave more accurate answersD.the fitter participants gave more accurate answers正确答案:B答案解析:本题有一定难度,需要认真阅读文章。

British scientists have now shown that breastfeeding and slow growth in the first weeks and months of life has a protective effect against cardiovascular disease."Diets that promote more rapid growth put babies at risk many years later in terms of raising their blood pressure, raising their cholesterol and increasing their tendency to diabetes and obesity-the four main risk factors for stroke and heart attack." said Professor Alan Lucas of the Institute of Child Health in London."Our evidence suggests that the reason why breast-fed babies do better is because they grow more slowly in the early weeks."Lucas said the effects of breastfeeding on blood pressure and cholesterol later in life are greater than anything adults can do to control the risk factors for cardiovascular disease, other than taking drugs. An estimated 17 million people die of cardiovascular disease, particularly heart attack and strokes, each year, according to the World Health Organization.Lucas and his colleagues compared the health of 216 teenagers who as babies had either been breastfed or given different nutritional baby formulas' They reported their findings in The Lancet medical journal. The teenagers who had been breastfed had a 14 percent lower ratio of bad to good cholesterol and lower concentrations of a protein that is a marker for cardiovascular disease risk. The researchers also found that regardless of the child's weight at birth, the faster the infants grew in the early weeks and months of life, the ______ was their later risk of heart disease and stroke. The effect was the same for both boys and girls. "The more human milk you have in the newborn period, the lower your cholesterol level is, the lower your blood pressure is 16 years later, "Lucas said.【单选题】A.smallerB.greaterC.fasterD.worse正确答案:B答案解析:根据前文内容判断,婴儿前期生长越快,他们忠心脏病的风险越大。

2、What Is the Coolest Gas in the Universe? What is the coldest air temperature ever recorded on the Earth? Where was this low temperature recorded? The coldest recorded temperature on Earth was - 91℃, which occurred in Antarctica (南极洲) in 1983.We encounter an interesting situation when we discuss temperatures in space.Temperatures in Earth orbit actually range from about +120℃to - 120℃. The temperature depends upon whether you are in direct sunlight or shade. Obviously, -120℃is colder than our body can safely endure. Thank NASA science for well, de signed space suits that protect astronauts from these temperature extremes. The space temperatures just discussed affect only our areal of the solar _____. Obviously, it is hotter closer to the Sun and colder as we travel away from the Sun. Astronomers estimatetemperatures at Pluto are about - 210℃. How cold is the lowest estimated temperature in the entire universe? Again, it depends upon your location. We are taught it is supposedly impossible to have a temperature below absolute zero, which is - 273℃, at which atoms do not move. Two scientists, whose names are Cornell and Wieman, have successfully cooled down a gas to a temperature barely above absolute zero. They won a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001 for their work, not a discovery, in this case. Why is the two scientists' work so important to science? In the 1920s, Satyendra Nath Bose was studying an interesting theory about special light particles we now call photons (光子). Bose had trouble convincing other scientists to believe his theory, so he contacted Albert Einstein. Einstein's calculations helped him theorize that atoms would behave as Bose thought—but only at very cold temperatures.Scientists have also discovered that ultra - cold(超冷) atoms can help them make the world's atomic clocks even more accurate. These clocks are so accurate today they would only lose one second every six million years! Such accuracy will help us travel in space because distance is velocity times time 4 ( d = v×t). With the long distances involved in space travel, we need to know time as accurately as possible to get accurate distance.【单选题】A.systemB.energyC.yearD.rays正确答案:A答案解析:本题难度不大,考查词义辨析,但干扰项干扰不大。

职称英语考试理工类概括大意专项练习题及答案1 You depend on all the people closely around to give you the warm feeling of belongingness (归属) that you must have to feel secure. But, in fact, the members of all the groups to which you belong also depend on you to give that feeling to them. A personwho shows that he wants everything for himself is bound (一定的) to be a lonely wolf.2 The need for panionship is closely related to theneed for a sense of belongingness. How sad and lonely your life would be if you had no one to share your feelings and experiences. You may take it for granted that there always will be peoplearound to talk to and to do things with you and for you. The important point, however, is that keeping emotionally healthy does not depend so much upon having people around you as upon your ability to establish relationships thatare satisfying both to you and to them.3 Suppose you are in a crowd watching a football game. You don‘t know them. When the game is over, you will all go your separate ways. But just for a while you had afeelingof panionship, of sharing the feelings of others who were cheering for the team you wanted to win.4 An experience of this kind gives the clue (线索) to what panionship really is. It depends upon emotional ties of sympathy, understanding, trust, and affection. Companions bee friends when ihese ties are formed.5 When you are thrown in a new circle of acquaintances (熟人), you may not know with whom you will make friends, but you can be sure that you will be able to establish friendships if you show that you really like people.1. These books were often concerned with the presentation of some forms of ideal society,a theme that is still often found in modern stories.3 Most of the classics of science fiction, however, have been written within the last hundred years. Books by writers such as Jules Verve and H. G Wells, to mention just two well knownauthors, have been translated into many languages.4 Modern science fiction writers don't write about men from Mars or space adventure stories. They are more interested in predicting the results of technical developments on society and the human mind; or in imagining future worlds that are a reflection of the world that we live in now. Because of this their writing has obvious political undertones (涵义).5 In an age where science fact frequently overtakes (超过) science fiction, the writers may find it difficult to keep ahead of scientific advances. Those who are sufficiently clear-sighted to see the way we are going, however, may provide a valuable lesson on how to deal with the problems which society will inevitably face as it tries to master its new technology. Paragraph 3____【单选题】A.A Fairly New DevelopmentB.Classics of Science FictionC.Difficulty in Keeping ahead of Scientific AdvancesD.Origins of Science FictionE.Themes of Modern Science FictionF.SuccessfulFilms正确答案:B答案解析:该段主要是在介绍经典科幻小说,其实该段第1句就已经出现了classics这个词,所以选项B是正确答案。

职称英语考试《理工类》模拟试题及答案0510-691、Stress Lessen CourseDoreen Sykora is now a junior at McGill University. She had a difficult time when she first began college. She said, "I was always well prepared for my examinations. But I would go in to class to take the exam, and I would fall apart. I could not answer the questions correctly-even though I knew the answers! I would just blank out because of nervousness and fear". Histoshi Sakamoto, an anthropology student at Temple University in Tokyo reports similar experiences. These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety. Because when a student worries and is stressed about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of the severe tension and nervousness. Now there are special university courses to help students. In these courses, advisors and psychologists try to help studentsby teaching them to manage test anxiety. Such a course helps students learn to live with stress and not fail because of it. First students take a practice test to measure their worry level. If the tests show that their stress level is high, the students can take a short course to manage the fear. These courses teach students how to relax their bodies. They get training to become calm in very tense situations. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work more easily. Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.Doreen Sykora saw immediate results after taking such a course. She now has enthusiasm about the relaxation methods. "Mostly, what I do is imagine myself in a very calm place. Then I imagine myself picking up a pencil. I move slowly and carefully. I breathe easily and let all the tension out. With each breath, more worry leaves me. It really works too. My grades have improved greatly! I'm really doing well at McGill now. This relaxation method works not only on examinations, but it has improved the rest of my life as well".For Histoshi in Tokyo, the results were much the same. He is enjoying school a lot more and learning more. These are signs of test anxiety EXCEPT____.【单选题】A.worries about a testB.stressed about a testC.low grades and poor study habitsD.nervousness during the test正确答案:C答案解析:第1段讲述了两个学生的详细情况,出于对考试的担心、压力、紧张,使得他们难以考好。

职称英语理工类概括大意预测题及答案More Than 8 Hours Sleep Too Much of a Good Thing1 Although the dangers of too little sleep are widely known, new research suggests that people who sleep too much may also suffer the consequences.2 Investigators at the University of California in San Diego found that people who clock up1 9 or 10 hours each weeknight appear to have more trouble falling and staying asleep, as well as a number of other sleep problems, than people who sleep 8 hours a night People who slept only 7 hours each night also said they had more trouble falling asleep and feeling refreshed after a night’s sleep than 8-hour sleepers.23 These findings, which Dr Daniel Kripke reported in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine3, demonstrate that people who want to get a good night’s rest may not need to set aside4 more than 8 hours a night He added that “it might be a good idea” for people who sleep more than 8 hours each night to consider reducing the amount of time they spend in bed, but cautioned that more research is needed to confirm this.4 Previous studies have shown the potential dangers of chronic shortages of sleep — for instance, one report demonstrated that people who habitually sleep less than 7 hours each night have a higher risk of dying within a fixed period than people who sleep more.5 For the current report, Kripke reviewed the responses of 1,004 adults to sleep questionnaires, in whichparticipants indicated how much they slept during the week and whether they experienced any sleep problems Sleep problems included waking in the middle of the night, arising early in the morning and being unable to fall back to sleep, and having fatigue interfere with day-to- day functioning5.6 Kripke found that people who slept between 9 and 10 hours each night were more likely to report experiencing each sleep problem than people who slept 8 hours In an interview, Kripke noted that long sleepers may struggle to get rest at night simply because they spend too much time in bed As evidence, he added that one way to help insomnia is to spend less time in bed “It stands to reason6 that if a person spends too long a time in bed, then they’ll spend a higher percentage of time awake,” he said.词汇:refresh v.(使)精力恢复questionnaire n.问卷psychosomatic adj.(指疾病)由精神压力引起的fatigue n.疲劳caution v.警告insomnia n.失眠habitually adv.习惯地注释:1.clock up:时间达到2.they had more trouble falling asleep and feeling refreshed after a night’s sleep than 8-hour sleepers:falling和feeling都是说明trouble的。

Museums in the Modern WorldMuseums have changed,They are no longer places for the privileged few or for bored vacationers to visit on rainy days,Action and democracy are words used in descriptions of museums now.At a science museum in Ontario,Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body,At the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, you can look at 17th century instruments while listening to their music,At the Modern Museum in Sweden, you can put on costumes provided by the Stockholm Opera,As these examples show, museums are reaching out to new audiences, particularly the young, the poor, and the less educated members of the population,As a result, attendance is increasing.More and more, museums directors are realizing that people learn best when they can somehow become part of what they are seeing,In many science museums, for example, there are no guided tours,The visitor is encouraged to touch, listen, operate, and experiment so as to discover scientific principles for himself,He can have the experience of operating a spaceship or a computer,He can experiment with glass blowing and paper making,The purpose is not only to provide fun but also to help people feel at home in the world of science,The theory is that people who do not understand science will probably fear it,and those who fear science will not use it to best advantage,Many museums now provide educational services and children s departments,In addition to the usual displays, they also offer film showings and dance programs,Instead of being places that one “should” visit, they are places to enjoy. One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and leisure time,Another cause is the rising percentage of young people in the population,Many of these young people are college students or college graduates,They are better educated than their parents,They see things in a new and different way,They are not content to stand and look at works of are; they want art they can participate in,The same is true of science and history,In the US,certain groups who formerly were too poor to care about anything beyond the basic needs of daily life are now becoming curious about the world around them,The young people in these groups, like young people in general, have benefited from a better education than their parents received,All these groups, and the rest of the population as well, have been influenced by television, which has taught them about other places and other times. The effect of all this has been to change existing museums and to encourage the building of new ones,In the US and Canada alone, there are now more than 6,000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago,About half of them are devoted to history, and the rest are evenly divided between the arts and sciences,The number of visitors, according to the American Association of museums, has risen to more than 700 million a year.In fact, the crowds of visitors at some museums are creating a major problem,Admission to museums has always been either free or very inexpensive, but now some museums are charging entrance fees for the first time or raising their prices,Even when raised, however, entrance fees are generally too low to support a museum, with its usually large building and its highly trained staff.1,Paragraph2________.2,Paragraph 3________.3,Paragraph 4________.4,Paragraph 5________.A Causes of changesB Increasing number of museums and visitorsC Museums getting closer to more spectatorsD Movies shown in museumsE New notions about the management of museumsF Places to visit5,Now museums are no longer restricted to the privileged few,but________.6,With the development of society, people, especially the young people,_________.7,To meet the needs of society, more museums________.8,Two major problems for museums are that they have too many visitors and they ________.A have higher demands of museumsB are open to more people with different social backgroundC to lengthen their opening hoursD charge too little for admissionE have been built and open to public参考答案: CEABBAE。

The Open University in Britain
1 In 1963 the leader of the Labor Party made a speech explaining plans for a "university of the air”-an educational system which would make use of television, radio and correspondence courses. Many people laughed at the idea, but it became part of the Labor Party s programmer to give educational opportunity to those people who,for one reason or another, had not had a chance to receive further education.
2 By 1969 plans were well advanced and by August 1970 the Open University,as it is now called, had received 400,000 applications.Only 25,000 could be aepted for the four “foundation” courses offered: social sciences, arts, science and mathematics.Unsuessful candidates were told to apply again the following year, when a foundation course in technology would also be offered.
3 The first teaching programmers appeared on the air and screen in January 1971,with clerks, farm
workers, housewives, teachers, policemen and many others as students.Correspondence units had been carefully prepared and science students were given devices for a small home laboratory.Study centers have been set up all over the country so that students can attend once a week, and once a year they will spend a week at one of the university s summer schools.
4 It has been nearly 30 years since the Open University started to offer courses. Now it is a very important part of the British educational system. Not only does it offer foundation courses like those mentioned above,it also carries out very advanced scientific researches, some of which lead to Master s or PH.D Degrees. Many other countries have started similar educational programmers following the suessful example of the Open University in Britain.
