Career-oriented adults — your typical “workaholic”—value the social status and reputation that comes with professional achievement, and gain much oftheir identity from their jobs. Calling-oriented people do work that they are passionate about because they want to have a positive impact on the world. In the first empirical study into how these orientations originate, researchers found that how teenagers view their parents' work ethic is central to the development of their own work attitudes. It's not a straightforward transfer of values. People who perceive their father to have a strong career-orientation are more likely to be career-oriented themselves, but career-determined mothers have no effect on their kids' work orientation. The researchers attributed this to generational gender norms. When the study's participants were teenagers, mostly in the 1980s, men were more commonly employed outside of the home and were more likely than women to hold “career” jobs with opportunity for advancement.Mothers do have a notable effect on whether children have a job-orientation mentality. Teenagers who are close to their mothers are less likely to view work as just a job when they grow up, probably because they've been raised to value social, rather than instrumental, life experiences.Having both parents display the same work ethic has an amplified influence, but only in the case of calling-oriented children. As our society favors money and professional achievement, a child with two calling-oriented parents is more likely to have the confidence to ignore these social pressures and pursue his dreams.Children can affect their parents' work ethic, too. Allowing people to bring their children into the office has been shown to improve efficiency and productivity —and could help raise that next generation of career-oriented workers.1.If you are proud of being a teacher, and you are enthusiastic about your job, you belong to ________.A.the job-oriented groupB.the career-oriented groupC.the workaholic groupD.the calling-oriented group2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Children valuing their parents' career-orientation will be career-oriented.B. Fathers have a greater influence than mothers on teenagers' attitude towards jobs.C.Calling-oriented mothers have little effect on their children's work orientation.D.Children's attitudes towards jobs aren't related to parents'.3.What does the underlined word “amplified” in Paragraph 6 mean?A.Enough.B.Increased.C.Decreased. D.Strong.4.What is the attitude of the child with two calling-oriented parents towards the social pressure?A.He takes no notice of it.B.He thinks too highly of it.C.He looks on it as a difficulty.D.He considers it confusing.Ⅲ.任务型阅读(2014·银川质检) 1.________ It makes people suffer a lot from it.Why can't they find a cure for the common cold? My four brothers and sisters and I wouldn't be here if he'd been led to any other number.Back in 1941, Dad spent his Saturday nights at “The Nixon”, a dance hall on the corner of 52nd and Market streets in Philadelphia. He could dance the Waltz and do the Jitterbug just as well as Fred Astaire. The girls dressed up and styled their hair like Ginger Rogers. Some wore silver slippers, while the more skilled dancers wore gold. In those days, when a guy wanted to dance with a girl, he had to sign up for a song on her dance card ahead of time — and every guy wanted to sweep Peg Oestreich off her feet.Dad was chatting with his friend when he first saw her walk into the dance hall, attractively beautiful, with dark brown eyes, shoulderlength brown hair and gold slippers. Dad waited in the crowd to sign her card, and they danced to “The Anniversary Waltz”. He fell in love with her completely. If only he could kiss her, just once!New Year's Eve was coming up. Maybe he could hold Peg for the midnight dance! Then he could give her a New Year's kiss. Dad spent every Saturday counting songs and figured out which dance would fall on the magic moment —number thirteen. “That can't be right,” Dad said to himself. “That's bad luck!” Had he made a mistake? Should he sign up for the twelfth or fourteenth? What if he was too early, or too late? On New Year's Eve, Dad ran to the dance hall, but Peg was already surrounded. By the time he got to sign her dance card, only one choice remained — thirteen. At 11:55, Evelyn Johnson, the bandleader, called their song. “Harvest Moon” began to play. Dad took Peg's hand. At that moment, he didn't care if the song lasted until midnight —he was happy just to dance with her. Then it happened. 10, 9, 8 ... The entire dance hall counted down. 3, 2, 1 ... HAPPY NEW YEAR! Peg looked into his eyes, and Dad delivered the perfect New Year's kiss.Mom and Dad started “going steady” that night, which led to 44 years of marriage, five children, four grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren —a growing family that all began with one “unlucky” number.1.Which of the following is the name of a famous dancer?A.Waltz. He had a printout of Google Maps from the airport to a hotel on the main street, but just couldn't find his hotel. He clearly didn't have a phone, so after confirming his written directions, I mapped it on my phone and showed him exactly where he needed to go.He mentioned that he had tried going there, but there was no such street number and he just couldn't locate his hotel. I confirmed it again for him. He thanked me with a big smile, shook my hand, and took off. I got into my car and he got into his, and we parted ways. As I drove to the next grocery store and went in, something wasn't sitting right about the directions — so I googled the address again and realized that he was looking for the right address but in a city half an hour away!Unfortunately it had been several minutes, and in the rush hour time, the chance of finding him a mile away where he was surely still looking around — was slim to none. But I thought I'd give it a try and took off in that direction. I'd barely noticed what his car looked like, and was just about to give up. I parked my car as I considered what else I could do when he drove right by and pulled over into a nearby parking spot, still confused about where he was. When I pulled in next to him, he couldn't believe it. “How did you find me?!” he asked. “I'm not sure, but I fi gured out that you are in the wrong city!” I showed him the hotel information, pulled up the right directions for him, and after more smiles, laughs and a handshake, we parted ways. Likely that we'll never meet again, and that makes it all the more sweet.5.The writer helped the man in the beginning by ________.A.driving him to the destinationB.turning to other people for helpC.lending the phone to himD.pointing the way for him6.How did the writer find the man again?A.The man drove by and pulled over nearby.B.The man didn't go far in his car.C.He used his Google Maps on the phone.D.He knew what the man's car looked like.7.Which of the following best describes the writer?A.Patient and helpful. But these shows are based on stories written by the children themselves. The grown-ups are there to help them become better writers. The Story Pirates are active in more than 200 schools across the United States. Their method is designed to help children learn about the purpose and structure of writing.Actors and teachers help students write stories. The children feel the pride of ownership in their work and may get to see their stories performed. About 200 actors and teachers are members of the Story Pirates. It involves two visits to a school. On the first visit, the teachers and actors hold a writing workshop (研讨会) at a student gathering. They help students express their ideas. The Story Pirates is not just a creativity and self-confidence-building program. It is a writing program. And they focus on elements (要素) of structure and style as broad as conflicts (冲突) and creative conflict resolution, and as detailed as grammar. After about a month, the Story Pirates return to the school. This time, they perform the stories they have chosen and prepared for the stage. They sing, dance, and tell jokes — whatever they can do to make the experience fun.Ann Ledo is the arts director for a school, where most of the students are black and poor. She says, “The work of the actors is an important part of the children's education. As a school that has a focus on the arts, we bring the Story Pirates in to further our students' experience.” Some educators may think of the importance currently placed on testing in schools, and wonder how they can measure the effects of a program like this. With Google Glass, you would be able to actually wear a computing device and carry outall the things, which you used to do over devices like smartphones and tablets.■Small but strong hardware to connect you to the worldIt is really amazing to see how Google Glass manages to include all the features in a very small, strong and yet lightweight frame. It is backed with WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, Touchpad, Camera, Microphone, and Speakers. A main piece, a small size screen, will show you all the information. You have the choice of using Google Hangout to enjoy a group conference and carry out anything without actually being limited to your desks. You can check your text messages along with attaching the pictures and videos without actually removing your smartphone device from your pocket.■Google Glass at your commandThe axiom —“your wish is my command” — seems to be true with Google Glass as it works on a voice command. The builtin microphone backed by “Google Now” simply connects you directly to your favorite search engine. All you need to do is to say “Okay, Glass” to start working with it. You can start working with it by simply tilting (使倾斜) your head.■________As Google Glass is backed up with GPS chip, it can help you to navigate using Google Maps. You can find photos, documents, and films on almost any topic you can imagine. And at ted, you can access lectures by artists, scholars, designers, technicians and others.TED began in 1984 as a conference that brought together individuals from the fields of technology, entertainment and design. It was intended to be a onetime event focusing on technology and design. The event ended up losing money, and it was six years before the founders tried it again. This time it worked, and since 1990, the TED conference has been an annual event. There are now two held every year, with topics as diverse as music, medicine, and money.Other specialized spinoff conferences address narrower issues. The TED website came from a desire to share the conferences with the world, to “offer free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers〞, as the website puts it.The current version of the site was launched in April 2007, and contains videos of talks given at the TED conferences around the world. The talks are transcribed into hundreds of languages. The TED website is owned by the Sapling Foundation, a nonprofit organization devoted to fostering the spread of great ideas. The Sapling Foundation acquired TED in 2001.Since then, it has been focusing on using TED to broadcast ideas that might change the world.TED, of course, isn't immune to criticism. It's been called elitist for its high ticket prices (more than 6,000 dollars in total). It's been accused by a few people of censorship for not publishing their talks. One controversial speaker was upset about being criticized by the conference's host afterward. The complaints, however, seem to be relatively few for such a large, longrunning organization. And accusations of elitism ring hollow when so much is given away for free on TED's website.Whatever its failings, TED is a source of inspirational information for those who seek it out.1.What is the main topic of the article?A.The case against TED.B.What's on TED today.C.Pros and cons of ted .D.What TED is.2.Which of the following statements is NOT true?A.The TED conference came after the success of ted .B.Two TED conferences are now held every year.C.TED talks are available in many languages.D.The Sapling Foundation owns ted .3.From the last two paragraphs, we can infer that________.A.it is accepted to all involved that some TED talks might not be published B.the host of the conference is one who plays a supportive role to the speakers C.TED is criticized for giving special treatment to the wealthy or powerful D.the negative comments on TED greatly affect its reputation4.This author probably believes that________.A.TED is elitistB.TED is beneficialC.TED isn't importantD.the TED website is the best答案Ⅰ.A1.more 2.a 3.which 4.happening 5.if6.be learned 7.what 8.with 9.in 10.awayB1.suggestions 2. having 3.why 4.much5.himself 6.or 7.better 8.Sounds 9.to make 10.aⅡ.1.解析:选C 根据上文可知,这群年轻人没有找到快乐,得到的仅仅是烦恼、悲伤和痛苦,所以他们向苏格拉底寻求建议。

It was a hot, sunny afternoon. I parked the car and was walking to my destination, when from a distance I saw an elderly man walking towards me in the opposite direction. As we came close, I saw that he was walking slowly, in measured steps and there was a look of pain on his face. He was not feeling comfortable, which I could clearly see. I glanced at him and then moved on, wanting to go quickly and complete my unfinished work.I soon reached my destination, completed my work and was returning to where the car was parked, when again from a distance I saw the same man sitting on the road. I quickly walked across to where he was sitting. I bent down and saw that he was tired and exhausted. I was concerned and asked him where he stayed as the intention was to drop him to his house in my car. He gave me the name of the place where he stayed, however, the name did not seem familiar and I did not want to just keep searching for the place, seeing the condition of my elderly friend.I quickly saw that nearby on the opposite side of the road were a few auto rickshaws (黄包车).My experience had been that the auto rickshaw drivers were the best guides to unknown places. I quickly called one of the auto rickshaws and told the driver to drop my friend to his place. I told the driver to find out where the destination was. He asked the elderly man and after a brief interaction between both of them, the driver had a fairly good idea of the direction he had to take to reach the destination. I then inquired of the driver how much the fare would be, the driver told me the amount and I gave him the money. The driver then started the auto rickshaw and as it began to move, my friend waved his hand and said softly, “Thank you.”I waved back to a stranger who briefly came, touched my life, and moved away, never to be seen again.1.What kind of the first impression did the elderly man give the author?A.The elderly man was in a peaceful state.B.The elderly man seemed seriously ill.C.The elderly man doesn't live comfortably.D.The elderly man lives a simple life.2.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.The elderly man is the author's father.B.The elderly man is begging along the road.C.The elderly man doesn't remember his home address.D.The author had intended to drive the elderly man home.3.Why did the author ask the auto rickshaw driver to drive the elderly man home?A.Because the author was unfamiliar with the name of the place where he lived.B.Because the author didn't want to drive a stranger home.C.Because the author was very busy in completing his work.D.Because the author disliked looking for unknown places.4.From the last two paragraphs we can learn that ________.A.the auto rickshaw driver sent the old man home without asking the wayB.the old man was grateful to the author for his kindnessC.the author was in deep depression for he couldn't find the old man's homeD.the old man was disappointed because the author didn't want to send him homeⅢ.任务型阅读(2014·兰州质检)Question: I come from a poor family, and my parents do what they can to pay for my education. What I want to do is let my parents live a happy and comfortable life.Where can I find riches?Do I need to leave school and find a well-paid job?Answer:You are a considerate child. 1.________ An African farmer heard tales about other farmers who discovered diamond mines. These tales excited the farmer so much that he could hardly wait to sell his farm and hunt for diamonds himself. So he sold the farm and spent the rest of his life wandering the African continent, searching unsuccessfully for the gleaming stones. 2.________Meanwhile, back to the farm, the man who had bought his farm happened to be crossing a small stream on the farm one day. 3.________ He picked it up. 【创新方案】2015届高考英语二轮复习 综合检测卷
综合检测卷(限时:100分钟满分120分)Ⅰ.阅读理解(满分30分)AMost people believe future humans are going to outer space, rather than inner space. They don't realize that space is rapidly becoming an informational desert, and that there will be very few people interested in going into space for any reason whatsoever in the future. In 2050 there will likely be a “Planet Channel” for every planet of the solar system, but most people will be very content to watch what the robots are doing rather than run down Olympus Mons on Mars in person, at 1/3 gravity, as fun as that may sound. By the middle of this century, our “eyes in space” will have run out of almost everything that might be interesting to find. As the astronomer Martin Harwit observed in the excellent and very underappreciated Cosmic Discovery,1981, we have been running out of unique astronomical features to discover for decades.By the mid 21st century there will be a few areas of the physical spectrum (范围), like gravity waves, which will remain underexplored. But virtually everything else will have been modeled well to a first approximation (概算), and our simulation science will be clearly more fruitful at that time than our data driven explorations. Already, Hubble sees to the edge of the universe. What more can we ask? That's like having a map of Earth. Once you get the first one, you pay a lot less for the next ones.Unlike inner space, the range of possibility for probing (探测), combining and computing with ever more miniaturized (小型化的) matter, outer space rapidly becomes “computationally closed”. There is simply no compelling reason to go to outer space, and every reason to go to inner space, as we'll discuss more later.1.According to the author, in 2050 most people would like to ________.A.explore outer space themselvesB.keep robots working for themC.go to Olympus Mons on MarsD.watch robots exploring outer space2.What does the author mainly discuss in the passage?A.The reason why future humans should go into outer space.B.The reason why we shouldn't make much effort in exploring outer space.C.The history and the future of space exploration.D.The difference in outer space exploration and inner space exploration.3.The author holds the view that ________.A.humans can survive in outer space in the futureB.much of outer space remains to be discoveredC.there remains very little for us to explore in outer spaceD.we should keep a balance between the exploration of outer and inner space 4.What will the author talk about in the paragraph closely following the passage?A.The need to explore inner space.B.How to explore inner space.C.The difficulty in exploring inner space.D.What “computationally closed” means.BTOKYO —If you grow old in Japan, you may expect to be served food by a robot, ride a voicerecognition wheelchair or even possibly hire a nurse in a robotic suit —all examples of cuttingedge technology to care for the country's rapidly grayingpopulation. With nearly 22 percent of Japan's population already aged 65 or older, businesses here have been rolling out everything from easyentry cars to remotecontrolled beds, fueling a caretechnology market worth some $1.08 billion in 2006, according to industry figures. At a home care and rehabilitation (恢复) convention in Tokyo this week, buyers crowded round a demonstration of Secom Co.'s My Spoon feeding robot, which helps elderly or disabled people eat with a spoon and a fitted swiveling (转动的) arm.Operating a joystick (操纵杆) with his chin, developer Shigehisa Kobayashi maneuvered the arm toward a block of soft tofu, deftly (灵巧地) getting the fork to break off a piece. The arm then returned to a preprogrammed position in front of the mouth, allowing Kobayashi to bite and swallow.“It's all about empowering people to help themselves,” Kobayashi said. The Tokyobased company has already sold 300 of the robots, which come with a price tag of $ 3,500. “We want to give the elderly control over their own lives,” he said. The rapidly aging population here has spurred a spate of concerns: a labor shortage, tax falls, financial difficulties in paying the health bills and pensions of large numbers of the elderly. Moreover, a breakdown of family ties in recent years means a growing number of older Japanese are spending their golden years away from the care traditionally provided by children and grandchildren. That's where cuttingedge technology steps in.5.The underlined word “maneuvered” in the fourth paragraph probably means “________”.A.moved skillfully B.turned carefullyC.lifted with effort D.fixed quickly6.My Spoon feeding robot is specially designed for ________.A.those aged 65 or olderB.those who have difficulty in feeding themselvesC.those who have lost the ability of eatingD.those who can move their arms freely7.With the special robots, the elderly in Japan can ________.A.put their lives under the control of the robotsB.help themselvesC.save a lot of money for the governmentD.have their medical bills reduced8.We can conclude from the passage that ________.A.the cuttingedge technology makes it easier for the young and old in Japan to keep tiesB.the cuttingedge technology has changed the traditional family system in Japan C.the elderly in Japan usually live far away from their children and grandchildrenD.the rapidly aging population in Japan has caused many social problemsCThere were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first timeI was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics. It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back. From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time. The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug. I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weatherbeaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.I looked forward to the return journey.9.The author expected the train trip to be ________.A.boring B.pleasantC.exciting D.adventurous10.What did the author remember most fondly of his train trip?A.The mountains along the way.B.The friendly country people.C.The crowds of people in the streets.D.The simple lunch served on the train.11.Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word “relish” in the second paragraph?A.Choose. B.Carry on.C.Prepare for. D.Enjoy.12.What can we learn from the story?A.Comfort in traveling by train.B.Smiles brighten people up.C.Reading gives people delight.D.Pleasure of living in the country.DIf you think it is cold where you are at the moment, then a visit to the Russian village of Oymyakon might just change your mind. With the average temperature for January standing at -50 ℃, it is no wonder that the village is the coldest in habited settlement in the world. Known as the “Pole of Cold”, the coldest temperature recorded in Oymyakon is -71.2 ℃, which is the lowest recorded temperature for any inhabited location on earth.Ironically, Oymyakon actually means “nonfreezing water”due to a nearby hot spring. Most homes in Oymyakon still burn coal and wood for heat and enjoy few modern conveniences.Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer (驯鹿) meat and horse meat. A single shop provides the town's bare necessities and the locals work as reindeerbreeders, hunters and icefisherman. The village is located around 750 metres above sea level and the length of a day varies from 3 hours in December to 21 hours in summer. And despite its terriblewinters, in June, July and August temperatures over 30 ℃ are not uncommon. There are few modern conveniences in the village — with many buildings still having outdoor toilets and most people still burning coal and wood for heat. When coal deliveries are irregular, the power station starts burning wood. If the power ceases, the town will shut down in about five hours, and the pipes will freeze and crack.Daily problems that come with living in Oymyakon include pen ink freezing, glasses freezing to people's faces and batteries losing power. Locals are said to leave their cars running all day for fear of not being able to restart them.Even if there is coverage for mobile phone reception, the phones themselves could not work in such cold conditions.Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies, which can take anything up to three days.13.According to the text, Oymyakon ________.A.is the coldest location on the earthB.has got frozen water all over the yearC.gets its name because of a nearby hot springD.can enjoy quite a few modern conveniences14.Mobile phones could not work in Oymyakon because ________.A.the batteries are of poor qualityB.the extreme coldness makes them lose powerC.there is no coverage for phone receptionD.the phone reception is too far away to receive the signals15.We can learn from the text that ________.A.daily problems usually accompany the localsB.the town often stops working because of no coal deliveryC.locals only live on reindeer meat and horse meatD.locals have no awareness of saving their resourcesⅡ.任务型阅读(满分10分)How to Do Well in ExamsDo not underestimate the power of revision in the days and hours before an examination.
