各组选两位学习组长,他们带领全组同学大胆设想,将前面所学的许多话题结合起来编成对话。
他们利用课余时间编排对话,互相交流。
对话中出现了问题共同探讨,共同解决。
在编写过程中,他们会有很多语法、句法或不符合交际语言等错误,老师会不厌其烦地帮助他们修改。

1.Duty Report在英语教学中的现状新学期伊始,笔者对本学院办公室的英语教师做了一份随机口头调查。
被调查的9位教师中,有3位教师每堂课都使用Duty Report;有2 位曾经试过,但由于效果欠佳而中途放弃;有4位从未使用过Duty Report。
老师对Duty Report的形式一般没有硬性规定,通常是由学生自行决定:可以是演讲、对话、短剧、故事、谈话,甚至是唱英语歌曲,时间通常为3-5分钟。
老师们使用Duty Report一般基于以下三个目的:1)英语是一门工具,英语学习需要有使用语言工具的机会(何自然,1997:123), Duty Report为学生们提供了一个锻炼交际能力和学以致用的机会;2)Duty Report是一种课前热身,通过它可以营造学习英语的氛围,同时也可以活跃课堂气氛;3)学生说英语时,大部分同学都感到胆怯、害羞,Duty Report为他们提供了一个面对大众、克服恐惧心理的机会。
使用Duty Report的老师们认为Duty Report基本上达到了预定的目的,但还存在以下几个方面的问题:1)由于现行的学业评价体系是重视笔头考试,英语口试还没有纳入到每一次的考试当中,所以学生对Duty Report重视不够,缺乏精心准备的动力。
多数学生只把它当作一种形式,是老师硬派的任务,因此持一种敷衍了事的态度。
(郑晓琴,2004 : 34)偶尔有精心准备的,也仅仅是出于个人爱好。
2)由于老师对学生Duty Report中使用的语言材料不设限制,所以学生的Duty Report要么生词太多,要么话题其他同学不熟悉,导致台上同学讲得热闹,台下同学不知所云,以一种看热闹的态度来对待这个活动。
有的老师也试图对Duty Report的效果进行检查。
例如:让做Duty Report的学生对其他同学提问,但结果是要么学生所提问题过于简单,要么下面同学不予理睬,要么回答一致,很难达到交流的目的,使得Duty Report的效果大打折扣。
这就是前面两位同事曾经尝试过但最终放弃的原因。
他们认为课时本来就紧张,与其做这种事倍功半的Duty Report,还不如直接上课的好。
3)由于教室空间大、学生人数多,而且学生既未受过演讲方面的专门训练,又情绪紧张,所以说话的声音又快、又急、又小,台下的同学,特别是后排的同学根本就听不清。
这也大大影响了Duty Report的效果。
4)进入高职院校的学生英语基础普遍偏差,对英语本来就不感兴趣,对课前的Duty Report更是提不起精神,无从下手。
所以他们不想参与,更不想投入。
2.给Duty Report注入新的活力针对以上情况,如果学生每堂课前都这样死板地进行Duty Report,没有新的东西,没有什么改变,久而久之,学生就会失去兴趣,恐怕也难以坚持下去。
高职学生更是如此,所以我们应该根据学生的需要,给Duty Report注入新的活力。
2.1 更新观念Duty Report不仅是英语教学的一个活动形式,也是英语课堂教学的一个重要的组成部分,更是提高同学们运用英语能力的一个重要途径。
它不应该只是少数学生展示英语才华的平台,而应该是全体学生实践英语、感知和体验英语、培养意志品质和合作精神的重要平台。
(何自然,1997:202-207)师生们思想上重视了,目标明确了,就有了开展此项活动的原动力,成功就有了前提和保证。
2.2 教师指导以前的Duty Report内容是由学生自行决定的,当中难免会出现一些难度把握不准、学生听不懂的现象。
这就要求老师给予学生指导和帮助,对他们收集的短文、故事、对话等进行适当的改编,使其符合学生现有的语言水平;另一方面,老师应该将一些符合学生英语语言能力的,并能结合课堂教学内容的句型、实例等材料打印,装订后发到所有学生手中,供他们参考。
这样能达到一箭双雕的目的:既为同学们做Duty Report提供充足的原始资料,减轻他们的压力,缓解听的同学听不懂的紧张情绪,又让每位同学都能就某个话题发表自己的看法(3-5个句子),让每位同学都体会到运用英语成功交际的喜悦。
2.3 丰富内容当Duty Report进行一段时间后,同学们觉得没什么内容可说了,也就会觉得很乏味。
这就要求教师提供一些新的材料,增添新的内容。
这些内容必须与现实生活有着某种联系,应是具体的并贴近学生生活、学习经历和社会实际,能引起学生的共鸣和兴趣,能激发学生积极参与的欲望。
(Nunan, 2000 :22)例如:1)组织学生开展社会实践活动。
如:对环境污染、气候变暖、交通状况、下岗再就业、上网成瘾、早恋成风等问题进行调查,写出调查报告,展开讨论;也可组织公益活动,如:到敬老院帮助老人打扫卫生,到农村帮助农民收割稻谷等,让学生写出心得,到课堂上来汇报;2)收集各种真实的课堂教学语言材料。
如:到图书馆查资料、网上下载信息、收集产品说明书和广告等,课堂教学需要什么语言材料就收集什么语言材料;3)关心、观察身边的人和事。
如:我院执行了班级劳动卫生轮流值周制度。
为了使学院每天都保持干净整洁,从开学的第一周起学院就安排各班级轮流打扫卫生,要求每位同学用英语写出值周期间的所见所闻,并在课堂上予以报告,对所发现的问题提出合理的解决办法。
2.4 改变模式过去的Duty Report每次都是一个人上台演讲,不能充分调动每个同学的积极性。
为了最大限度地吸引学生参与该活动,我们改变了以往的做法,由一个人上台演讲发展到多人同台表演。
人员可以自由组合,内容可以是自编对话、朗读英文原著、表演英语小品或话剧、领唱或合唱英语歌曲,或就某一热点话题交换看法或展开讨论等。
这种模式的采用深受同学们的欢迎:一方面缓解了一个人上台表演的紧张情绪,另一方面又培养了同学们的合作精神和团队意识,极大地提高了他们的兴趣(束定芳、庄智象,1996 :233),也大大提高了该活动的效果,同学们普遍反映较好。
实施一段时间后,变化十分明显:学生们对Duty Report 更重视了,准备更精心了。
课余商讨、排练Duty Report 已成为一道亮丽的风景线,学生间真正意义上的合作学习已初显端倪。
2.5 强化措施对于那些英语基础相对薄弱、性格内向、胆小害羞的同学,他们在做Duty Report时会出现说话的声音又快、又急、又小的现象,我们对此采取了以下措施:1)培养自信。
任何人第一次上台讲话或当众演讲都会紧张,只是紧张的程度不同而已。
众所周知,紧张是由于缺乏自信而导致的。
Brown和Yule曾经说过:“如果说话者熟悉、并完全理解自己掌握的信息。
”;“如果说话者熟知他完成任务所需的外语词汇,将有助于缓解交际紧张(Brown & Yule,2000 :21)”。
所以为了避免学生产生紧张情绪,在英语课堂上,老师应该尽量做到多鼓励、多表扬。
学生的Duty Report话题应该是他们熟悉、了解的,最好是他们自己写的语言材料;2)成立互帮小组。
有些同学由于英语根底不扎实,底气不足,导致紧张。
要培养他们的底气和胆量,首先是要帮他们打好基础,采用“一帮一,结对子”的方法:指定班上英语成绩好的同学利用课余时间帮助他们学英语,负责督促他们朗读或背诵对话或课文,检查他们的作业,修改他们的短文,多跟他们交流,提高他们的自信。
经过一段时间后,他们的底子厚了,底气足了,就会觉得大声说英语不是他们想像的那么难。
尝到甜头后,他们就会越说越有劲,越说越胆大。
采用“一帮一”的办法,一方面增进了同学们之间的友谊,另一方面使双方受益,共同进步;3)机会倾斜。
英语课堂上,老师应该尽量多创造一些机会,让这些胆小的同学多回答问题、表演对话、分析课文、讲解大意等,激发他们的兴趣,培养他们的胆量,拉近他们与其他同学的距离,让他们真正参与到课堂上来,这样,他们的紧张情绪自然会慢慢消失;4)多参与课外活动。
由于英语是一门交流工具,只有课内有限的交际活动,要真正达到运用自如的目的是永远不够的。
所以老师要多鼓励同学们,尤其是性格内向、胆小害羞的同学多参与课外活动,如:英语角、英语故事会、英语朗读比赛等,以此来提高他们运用英语的能力;5)成立课外录音小组。
有些同学讲英语声音小,一方面是由于天性害羞,另一方面可能是担心自己英语口语发音不标准,害怕大声讲出来人家笑话。
针对这种情况,老师应当鼓励他们多听英语原声磁带,模仿当中的语音语调,提高他们的口语能力和听力能力。
另外,成立英语课外录音小组,老师为他们提供空白磁带、录音机等(也可以由他们自己准备),多到班上辅导他们的发音,让他们反复读、反复练,再让他们把自己所读的内容录下来,这样反复多次,他们的发音肯定会越来越好,兴趣肯定会越来越浓,信心肯定会越来越足;6)推荐发表。
同学们在Duty Report中写得好的文章,老师帮助推荐到学院英语周报上发表,面向全院发行,这样同学们参与该活动的热情和积极性日益高涨。
