Unit 23 单元主题语篇训练ABusiness strategist Michael Goldhaber began predicting about the attention economy more than 20 years ago, claiming, “No one would put anything on the Internet without obtaining some attention.”A recent survey in the New Statesman attempted to explore the relationship between what makes us “like our likes” and what fuels our desire for followers. One response from a 17yearold girl provided an alarming image of modern affairs. “Likes are always an indicator of social standing. As someo ne who gets anxious and occasionally struggles with selfesteem (自尊), the amount of likes on my posts can be either hugely uplifting or depressing,” said the teenager. And that applies to everyone. An extraordinary 89% of those taking part in the survey admitted the number of likes connected with making them happy. However, here comes the down curve (曲线): 40% admitted this happiness only lasts as long as the likes keep coming in. Tellingly, you could also be one of the 70% of people who are given a “sympathy like”. But regardless of intention, the likes act as encouragement which makes you want more and more.Addiction expert Judson Brewer, and Associate Professor at University of Massachusetts Medical School, wrote in the Huffington Post that when we talk to someone face to face, our brains have to try to add together such factors as context, nonverbal facial and body cues (暗示), and tone of voice, which leaves plenty of room for ambiguity and subjective understanding. In real life, there is no simple, quant ifiable point system (the “likes” on Instagram): we can't assign one like for a smile, another for tone of voice. To put it bluntly, the Mark Zuckerbergs of this world need you for as long as possible to make their business models work. They don't care that you've just liked your best friend's wedding pictures. It's the ads around those pictures that make Facebook tick. It goes deeper, too. Your viewing history is taken into account, thus making ads which may interest you be displayed. The aim is to stop you from closing your news feed. The engineers want your attention.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

新高考英语一轮复习:Unit 23 Conflict课时练1 2篇阅读+1篇完形+1篇应用文写作Ⅰ.阅读理解A(2020·北京怀柔区高三模拟) Superstorm Sandy slammed into the eastern United States a few years ago. The winddriven water caused a lot of flooding, especially in the region’s subway system. Now two teens have invented a device that could help prevent future subway floods. In New York City alone, Superstorm Sandy caused an estimated $19 billion in damage. Much of the floodwaters entered the subway system through its ventilation grates (通风栅). Those metal grills usually lie at ground level. When the system is shut down ahead of a flood, engineers try to cover those grates with plywood(胶合板) and sandbags. But the flooding often washes away those measures, which allows water to flow into the tunnels. Raising those grates even a tiny bit above ground level would cost a lot of money. Other ideas have included building tall chimneys around the holes. That would raise the grates and cost a lot of money, too.Kyle and Raymond came up with a different, less expensive idea. They designed a metal grate with a builtin, adjustable cover. When trains are running, one part of the grate slides open to bring in fresh air. But when the system is shut down, that part can be slid shut to completely block the grate.Their grate is the same size as the grates used now. So, it would be simple, they say, to lift out the old grate and drop in a replacement. Their design includes tamperproof features, which can prevent operation mistakes. They make sure that people don’t intentionally shut off airflow during normal conditions. For people with the proper key, it would only take a minute or two to close the grate ahead of a flood.【解题导语】本文主要讲述了几年前超级风暴Sandy猛烈袭击美国东部,造成了洪水灾害,当地的地铁被洪水淹没。

Unit 23 ConflictⅠ.阅读理解AIt is a tall tale that terrifies most young children. Swallow a piece of chewing gum and it will remain in your body for seven years before it is digested. An even worse tale is that swallowed gum can wrap itself around your heart. But what does happen if you should accidentally eat a stick of gum? Chewing gum is made out of gum base, sweeteners, coloring and flavoring. The gum base is pretty indigestible—it is a mixture of different ingredients (成分) that our body can't absorb. Most of the time, your stomach really cannot break down the gum the way it would break down other foods. However, your digestive system has another way to deal with things you swallow. After all, we eat lots of things that we are unable to fully digest. They keep moving along until they make it all the way through the gut (肠子) and come out at the other end one or two days later. The saliva (唾液) in our mouths will make an attempt at digesting chewing gum as soon as we put it in our mouths. It might get through the shell but many of gum's base ingredients are indigestible. It's then down to our stomach muscles—which contract and relax, much like the way an earthworm moves—to slowly force the things that we swallow through our systems.Swallowing a huge piece of gum or swallowing many small pieces of gum in a short time can cause a blockage within the digestive system, most often in children, who have a thinner digestive tube than adults—but this is extremely rare.文章大意:本文为一篇科普类说明文。

Unit 23 Conflict李仕才Ⅰ阅读理解ANowadays more and more people are talking about genetically modified foods ( GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms (有机体), which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a nonspecific but stable change. For many people, the hightech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature. In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the U. S. last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle. However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fastgrowing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks? The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world's population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don' t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defeats. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness. How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed geneticallymodified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortages are caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.1.The passage mainly talks about________.A. the world's food problemB. the development in biotechC. the genetically modified foodsD. the way to solve food shortages2.According to the passage, GM foods________.A. will replace naturally grown foodsB. are far better than naturally grown foodsC. may help to solve the problem of poor nutritionD. can cause serious trouble in developing countries3.The underlined sentence “The genetic genie is out of the bottle.” in Paragraph 2 probablymeans that________.A.GM foods are available everywhereB. the technology in producing GM foods is advancedC. genetic technology may have uncontrollable powersD. genetic technology has come out of laboratories into markets4.What's the writer's attitude towards GM foods?A. Enthusiastic.B. Cautious.C. Disapproving.D.

AThe Japanese like parties. From ancient times, a party becomes enlivened (活泼) when someone starts singing and others keep applauding.Having such a custom, the Japanese can easily sing in front of others without feeling embarrassed. This seems to be one of the reasons that karaoke has been largely accepted in Japanese society. It is now widely recognized that the use of karaoke started at a snack bar in KobeCity, one of the three biggest cities in Japan. It is said that when a guitarist could not come to perform at the bar due to illness, the owner of the bar prepared tapes of accompaniment recordings, and people enjoyed singing to the tapes. It was at that time that karaoke appeared.Holding a microphone and singing a son g to the accompaniment of an “orchestra (管弦乐队)〞, you can feel like a professional singer. For soldiers living in a stressful society, there is no other entertainment activity that can make them feel so refreshed. It is a typical way to relax for Japanese businessmen. They use it to take away their stress after work. However, there is an obstacle to this: since most Japanese houses are still made of wood, it would be very annoying to the neighbors to sing into a microphone at night.Seizing upon the opportunity, businessmen created the karaoke box, a roadside facility containing karaoke equipment.Karaoke boxes are soundproofed rooms, closed with a door, placed on roadsides where people can sing. The first “Karaoke box〞 was placed in a rice camp in the countryside in 1984.It wasbuilt from a converted freight car (改装的货运车).Now, the karaoke boom has even spread abroad and it has also been attracting the attention of the countries trying to improve their literacy rate (识字率) as a good educational tool.1.According to the text, we can learn that karaoke ________.A.originated from the biggest city of JapanB.originated in the form of singing to tapesC.can help you achieve the level of professional singersD.first appeared in the army to relieve stress for soldiers2.The underlined word “soundproofed〞 in Paragraph 4 most probably means “________〞.A.recording sounds repeatedlyB.receiving sound signalsC.making sound more clearD.stopping sound from being heard outside3.What can be inferred from the text?A.Karaoke was started in a bar during a party.B.A guitarist was the originator who brought the karaoke into being.C.Karaoke was very common as a form of entertainment at home when it was born.D.Karaoke is used as a way of education in some countries.4.What is the text mainly about?A.What karaoke boxes are like.B.How karaoke boxes were created.C.The origins and development of karaoke.D.Karaoke becomes a popular form of entertainment.B(2016.淮北五校联考)This is the most exciting kayaking expedition (皮划艇探险) possible for beginner kayakers. You can expect to experience a whole range of different conditions and scenery. This expedition is a total of 8.27 km in distance and it actually enters the streams in the North of Ubin and exits in the South.Three and a half kilometers of pure mangroves (红树林), makes this the longest pure mangrove kayaking expedition in Singapore. The distance spent inside the mangrove gives you the maximum opportunity to witness wildlife within the mangrove ecosystem. Come to experience the challeng e of operating your kayak through the labyrinth (迷宫) of waterways and be amazed at the calm and quiet beauty of the wetlands. This last corner of natural wilderness in Singapore is so inaccessible, that very, very few have ever experienced it — which makes this a truly special program. Most Recent Traveler ReviewsTraveler A: Traveled from bottom to top of Singapore in rush hour traffic in order to get to Ubin for a 9:30 start — only to find no guide there. Although, once he arrived, the guide was lovely —offering a very knowledgeable tour and lots of enthusiasm around a beautiful part of the world —our 6hour kayaking trip was actually over before 2:30 pm, despite only hitting the water at 12:00.Traveler B: The guides were nice, however the biggest disappointment was the timing. We thought we were going for a 4hour kayak but were back in 2 hours and that included the prekayak safety talk. The mangroves are lovely but we were told that a storm was near. We felt that there had never been any intention of going out for longer.5.What is special about the kayaking trip for travelers is that they ________.A.have a good relaxation by kayakingB.feel the challenge of kayakingC.enjoy the beauty of the wetlandsD.experience the wonder of mangroves6.Which of the following information is TRUE about the kayaking expedition?A.The time, distance and cost are referred to.B.The kayaking trip starts at 9:30 am and ends at noon.C.The distance spent inside the mangrove is 3.5 kilometres.D.The mangrove wetlands of Ubin lie in the south of Singapore.7.Which is the common point referred to by the two travelers?A.The unpleasant weather.B.The shortened distance.C.The lovely wildlife.D.The guide's service.8.What can we learn from the passage?A.The safety of the kayaking travelers is not well guaranteed.B.The ecosystem of Ubin nature reserve is well protected.C.The timing of the kayaking trip is satisfactory on the whole.D.Travelers' complaints may not be considered by the traveling company.CEveryone looks forward to progress, whether in one's personal life or in the general society.Progress indicates a person's ability to change the way he is living at the moment.Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology andmove forward by finding new and more efficient ways of doing things. However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days〞, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to.The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets,_such as mobile phones and iPads, people often do not take the effort to visit one another personally.A personal visit carries with it the additional feature of having to be in the person's presence for as long as the visit lasts. We cannot unnecessarily excuse ourselves or turn the other person off. With efficiency also comes mass production.Such is the nature of factories and the success of industrialization today.Factories have improved efficiency.Unskillful tasks are left to machines and products are better made and produced with greater accuracy than any human hand could ever have done. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory.Although this means that supply is better able to increase demand, now that the supply is quick and efficient, the demand might fall because mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item.Nevertheless, we must not commit the mistake of analyzing progress only from one point of view.In fact, progress has allowed tradition to keep up.It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state.New technology is required for old products to stay old.It is people's attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society.Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of makinguse of it.Everything depends on people's attitude. The worst effects of progress will fall on those who are unable to rethink their attitudes and views of society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new“past〞 is created.9.The under lined word “gadgets〞in Para. 2 is closest in meaning to“________〞.A.toolsB.messagesC.barriersD.skills10 pared with homemade handicrafts, machinemade products________.ck great accuracyck the personal touchC.are of high valueD.are quite welcome11.What can be learned about technology from Paragraph 4?A.It can destroy old traditions.B.It can lead to social progress.C.It can be used to correct mistakes.D.It can be used to preserve old products.12.What can be concluded from the last paragraph?A.Progress can suit the needs of daily life.B.People review the past with great regret.C.Technology should be introduced in a fixed way.D.People's attitude decides the use of technology.Ⅱ.任务型阅读Christmas comes with its share of joys and celebrations but also comes with its share of headaches.
