The latest studies show that being bilingual does not necessarily make people cleverer, but it probably does make you better at certain skills.Imagine driving down the highway. There're many things that could attract your attention and you really need to be able to watch all of them. Why would bilingualism make you any better at that? The answer is that bilingual people are often better at controlling their attention — a function(功能) called the executive control system. It's quitepossibly the most important system you have because it's where all of your decisions about what to attend to, what to ignore(忽视), what to process are made. The best method to measure(测量) the executive control system is called the Stroop Test. Suppose you would have the word "blue" written in red, but you have to say the colour red. But "blue" is so eye-catching, and you really want to say "blue". You need to ignore it so that you can say the colour red. That's the Stroop Test.Bilingual people continually practice this function. They have to, because both languages are active in their brain at the same time. They need to ignore one to be able to speak in the other. This exercise might help in other ways, too. Researchers say bilingual children are more likely to have friends from different cultures. Bilingual adults are often four to five years later than others in developing Alzheimer's disease.1.What did the recent research find about bilingual people?A. They can safely drive their cars.B. They can well manage their attention.C. They can have a better control of imagination.D. They can easily pick out the colours they want.2.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. Red.B. Blue.C. Test.D. System.3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Bilingualism may do harm to people's health.B. Bilingualism helps children make more foreign friends.C. People must practice speaking two languages continually.D. People use more active words from their mother languages.4.What might be the best title for the text?A. How does the Stroop Test work?B. What is executive control system?C. Are monolingual people smarter?D. Are bilingual people better at some skills?5.Where is the text probably from?A. A shopping poster.B. A school introduction.C. A science report.D. A guidebook.Passage 12If you know something is bad for you,why can't you just stop?About 70% of smokers say they would like to stop.Alcohol abusers(酗酒者)struggle to give up the bad habits that hurt their bodies and destroy families and friendships. And many of us have unhealthy weight that we could lose if only we would eat right and exercise more.So why don't we do it?Some scientists have been searching for answers. They've studied what happens in our brains as habits form. They've found answers to why bad habits are so difficult to kick. And they're developing ways to help us make the changes we'd like to make.Habits are a normal part of life, and are often helpful."We wake up every morning, comb our hair or brush our teeth without being aware of it,"Volkow says.We can drive along familiar routes without really thinking about the directions."When behavior becomes automatic(无意识的),it gives us an advantage, because the brain does not have to perform the action on purpose,"Volkow says. This frees our brains to focus on different things. One way to kick bad habits is to focus on your unhealthy habits. Then try your best to stop them. For example, habits can be linked in our minds to certain places and activities. You could develop a plan to avoid walking down the hall where there's a candy machine.Try to avoid going to places where you used to smoke.Stay away from friends and situations linked to drinking problem.Another helpful way is to replace unhealthy habits with new and healthy ones. 话题2 科普知识催产素增进人与狗的关系Have you ever thought of why dogs are human’s best friends? What’s the bond(紧密关系)between human and dogs? A new study by Japanese scientist Miho Nagasawa seems to have found the answer, and it has to do with something named the cuddle(拥抱)chemical. The cuddle chemical has another, more scientific name: oxytocin(催产素). Oxytocin is something in the blood that encourages bonding. Levels of oxytocin increase, for example, when a mother feeds her newborn baby. According to Nagasawa’s study, levels of oxytocin can also go up when we look deeply into the eyes of a dog.Humans and dogs have been working together for nearly 30,000 years. In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical worked between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team did an experiment. They tested levels of oxytocin in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact(交流)with each other. While in the room, the humans pet the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dog’s eyes. Then the scientists tested their levels of oxytocin again. The researchers found that levels of oxytocin were higher in both humans and dogs after they interacted. However, levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that simply looked into each other’s eyes, without much petting or talking. The longer the humans looked into the eyes of the dogs, the more cuddle chemical was let out. Nagasawa did the same experiment with humans and wolves, but it did not give the same results.1. It makes us feel more care. It stops stress from building because we kno w someone else is thinking about us. And if there is a problem, we’re sharing it before it gets too big. It just feels great to help.Try these small practices at home and see how they make you feel:*Help your little brother or sister with a homework problem.*Help your dad prepare dinner.*Help your mom carry living goods.*Offer to do a chore that’s not usually yours “just because.”There’s more to it than just feeling good: Kindness is contagious. It can create more kindness. So you might start to notice your family (or friends) reaching out to help more.Just don’t fall into the trap(陷阱) of expectation(期待). If we help out only because we expect the other person to do something in return, we will probably end up feeling disappointed and angry instead of happy and fulfilled. So decide to help simply because of the positive feelings it creates. Then, when someone else does something nice for you (and it will happen!), it’s a wonderful surprise.Giving and receiving is one of the most basic friendship skills. 阅读技能Passage 2(’15 自贡改编)英国餐桌礼仪Different countries hav e different ideas about manners—how you behave when you are eating. In England, table manners are important.★ How to sit:You should sit up straight in your chair. It is not a good idea to lean(倾斜) forwards or backwards. When you eat, you should not lean towards the plate, but bring the knife, fork or spoon towards you. At the same time, do not put your elbows on the table.★Using your fingers: English people normally don’t pick food up with thei r fingers when they are eating main courses. If you are not sure, the safest is to use your knife or fork. There are, however, some foods that are usually eaten with fingers. They include pizza, sandwiches, burgers, crisps and fruit.★ Your mouth: It is not polite to talk with your mouth f ull of food, or to eat with your mouth open. And if possible, do not make any noises. Never lick (舔)your plate after eating.★ How mu ch to eat: It is polite to eat the food that you have been offered, so a clear plate is a good plate. It shows that you enjoyed the food.If you can’t finish everything and need to leave a little, that’s also okay. You could say something like “That was very nice, thank you, but I’m just too full to eat another bite.”1.
