Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategiesis to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses theirrequest , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be competitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their company’s situation17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D try to make the other side like you18 According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.D convince them of your point of view19 Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the companies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly20 Dr Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you shouldA be prepared to try every routeB try not to make people feel guiltyC be careful not to exhaust yourselfD control the decision-making process.参考答案:15 B16D 17A 18D19B 20 A。

You’re struggling to keep up on all fronts, and the people side of things can be a real headache. What we do is rather specialised, which means you can’t just take people on as and when you need them. That’s why making the skills building sessions available to more people was a good idea, as it means we can grow expertise internally.13.—You will hear five short recordings about improvements in the workplace.—For each recording, decide What improvement has been made.—Write one letter (A - H) next to the number of the recording.—Do not use any letter more than once.—You will hear the five recordings twice.A Some inefficient equipment was replaced.B A bonus payment system was extended.C A department was moved to new premises.D Training opportunities were increased.E A system of cost control was implemented.F Some software was upgraded.G A number of specialist staff were recruited.H A system of promotion was introduced.正确答案:D听力原文:Well, it is a step in the right direction, although there’s still a long way to go before we can really maximise out potential. But using the database had been difficult, because we were running it on such old PCs and they kept crashing. Now we’ve got high quality ones, it should all start to go more smoothly. Though of course training to work with them is still an issue.14.正确答案:A听力原文:Small businesses can be incredibly inefficient in all sorts of ways. We’ve certainly been guilty of paying out for things without checking the outlay against the benefits. But with this new chap appointed, I can see we’re going to be much more careful. We have to put everything to him, and he analyses all spending. Waste is going right down, and we’ve cancelled some orders for unnecessary new machinery. Margins are looking better already.15.正确答案:E听力原文:If we want to stick to our plan for growth, then we have to make sure that we retain staff. We certainly can’t afford to keep taking on new people and training them up. I think we were right to drop the purely financial rewards for meeting targets - people are as interested in long-term security as in cash. But the prospect of moving up to the new team leader level seems to be a stronger incentive - a good decision.16.正确答案:H听力原文:It was very complicated to arrange, but now we’re seeing the benefits. There just wasn’t enough room for everyone and everything. People had to keep going downstairs to do copying, and they could hear each other’s phone calls - very distracting. But setting admin up in the new building has given everyone room to breathe, and the atmosphere in both places is better now. The next thing will be upgrading the PCs.17.正确答案:C听力原文:Well, obviously every team’s going to be different, but some things should be standard practice. For the thing to hold together, everyone’s got to be pulling their weight, whatever their role is, so you need to keep a keen eye on how they’re all doing. Keep tabs on whether they’ve done what they should have, and whether they’re getting things done on time. You need to be equal and fair with everyone.18.—You will hear another five recordings.—You will hear five speakers talking about running project teams.—For each recording, decide what the speaker recommends.—Write one letter (A - H) next to the number of the recording.—Do not use any letter more than once.—You will hear the five recordings twice.A Publish regular updates on progress.B Provide specific training for participants.C Define individual roles clearly.D Recruit members from different departments.E Check targets and deadlines frequently.F Obtain input from external experts.G Examine the achievements of previous teams.H Allocate sufficient technologicalresources.正确答案:E听力原文:If you’re putting people together for a particular purpose on top of their normal work you need to be sure they’ve got everything they need to fulfill their brief, Communication is a key factor, so be sure they have the tools to achieve quality. on that front - a laptop for , meetings, a bulletin board on the intranet and so on. Special teams need high visibility to keep their motivation up, and to maintain interest among other staff.19.正确答案:H听力原文:There’s no point re inventing the wheel for every team. You can look outside the current group for ideas. See what teams in other departments or divisions have managed to do - you’ll often find they’ve worked in similar circumstances, and you can look at how they handled it. That’ll give you ideas of what to do - and, often, what not to do, too. It should mean your own progress is smoother.20.正确答案:G听力原文:The trouble is that when things seem to go wrong, it may be too late to fix them, because you actually built the problem in from the start. It’s vital that each member of the team knows exactly what it is he or she is supposed to contribute. You won’t get a good whole if the parts aren’t put together properly. If members are from different departments, they’ll have different expectations, which need to be dealt with.21.正确答案:C听力原文:A team can look like a single unit from the outside, but be chaos within, with nobody really understanding what’s going on. Or, as often happens, they have conflicting ideas of what they’re trying to achieve. It can help to avoid such problems if you build in an education phase at the start - make sure everyone is fully inducted by teaching them the skills they’ll need for the project. It’ll make life easier - or bearable, at least.22.正确答案:BPART THREE听力原文:M: Sally, everyone’s talking about the changes. I’d be interested to know what you make of them.F: Well, Louis, I think it’s a mixed bag. I guess they’ve been fairly carefully planned. I think every department head was consulted, so ideas were contributed from the whole organisation. The chairman put a lot of thought into bringing it all together, which is probably due to his background in consultancy - wanting to get the whole picture clear, before finally deciding.M: I hadn’t realised they’d been so long in the making - they seemed to come out of the blue,F: Oh no, it’s been building up. The idea is to give our whole operation a boost. We’ve been paying the price for low motivation for quite a while, and it’s time to turn staff retention rates around. Sales and profits have been static for too long, but if we can get more commitment out of people, things should pick up.M: Sounds reasonable. As I say, I thought they’d happened rather suddenly. If other senior staff are thinking that too, they’re going to feel some resentment. But then again, it doesn’t mean they won’t get on with implementing them, so I guess it’ll all end up alright.F: I hope you’re right. Still, I’m personally rather unconvinced about the new working hours.M: Oh?F: Well the idea sounds nice having core hours from I I to 3 and leaving people free to start as early or late as they want and finish accordingly ...M: And maybe working four long days and having longer weekends.F: But it’ll mean we’ll be very understaffed on some days, and then those people who are here will have to take everybody’s calls, so less actual work will get done that’s how I see it turning out in the end, anyway.M: I see what you mean. What other problems do you foresee?F: I think the sales targets could have been better thought out. I know the idea is to encourage a spirit of healthy competition, which is no bad thing of course, but they’ve been applied right across the board in the departments affected. People can’t be expected to achieve the same regardless of what they’re selling. It’s a fact that some models outsell others, and that ought to be reflected in the targets.M: Well, on a more positive note, I’m all in favour of the training that’s being introduced.F: Uh-huh.M: It’s going to be far more accessible. When we had sessions provided by the college, the topics were rather limited, it seemed to me, but now there’s a much wider range on offer, not just internet and database management all the time. I just hope they timetable it sensibly.F: Oh, I think they will, after all the effort of setting it up. Something I’m looking forward to is the newsletter- that’s a great idea.M: Yes, it makes you wonder why we haven’t had one before.F: It’ll be a real boost for corporate culture, make everyone feel involved. The overseas reps will particularly, appreciate it - they can feel outside the loop except when they’re over here, which is only twice a year I suppose most of the contributions will come from managers. People joining the company will probably assume we’ve always had it, but I’m sure it’ll be an improvement.M: So, some hope for the future?F: Let’s give it about six months to see how it all plays out. It takes time to tell whether things are going to succeed, and everyone will need to be consulted to get their views and experiences on the changes. The real test will be morale, and whether it seems to go up or down, but I’d guess these won’t be the last changes, and that we’ll see more major changes introduced.M: As you say, time will tell ...—You will hear two managers, Louis and Sally, discussing changes in theircompany.—For each question 23 - 30, mark one letter (A, B or C) for the correct answer.—You will hear the recording twice.23.Sally says that the changes were planned byA.a cross-departmental team.B.management consultants.C.the company chairman,正确答案:C24.She says the changes are designed to deal withA.high staff turnover.B.increased costs.C.falling sales.正确答案:A25.What does Louis feel about the changes?A.They should have happened soonerB.Some managers will dislike them.C.Their success will be limited.正确答案:B26.Sally says the new working hours will beA.less productive in the long run.B.unpopular with some staff.C.difficult to control.正确答案:A27.She thinks that the new sales targetsA.fail to consider competitors.B.are too high for her department.C.should vary according to the product.正确答案:C28.Louis thinks the new training will be effective becauseA.it is available on-line.B.it covers more topics.C.it uses outside trainers.正确答案:B29.Sally says that the newsletter will be most valuable for A.new staff.B.management.C.agents abroad.正确答案:C30.What does she think will happen in six months’ time? Then write down the correct answer in the brackets for each question or statement. This section totals 20 points, two points for each question.Passage OneInvesting thousands of pounds in the recruitment and training of each new graduate recruit may be just the beginning. Choosing the wrong candidate may leave an organisation paying for years to come.Few companies will have escaped all of the following failures: people who panic at the first sight of stress; those with long impressive qualifications who seem incapable of learning; hypochondriacs whose absentee record becomes astonishing; and the unstable person later discovered to be a thief or worse.Less dramatic, but just as much a problem, is the person who simply does not come up to expectations, who does not quite deliver; who never becomes a high-flier or even a steady performer; the employee with a fine future behind them. The first point to bear in mind at the recruitment stage is that people don’t change. Intelligence levels decline modestly, but change little over their working life. The same is true of abilities, such as learning languages and handling numbers. Most people like to think that personality can change, particularly the more negative features such as anxiety, low esteem, impulsiveness or a lack of emotional warmth. But data collected over 50 years gives a clear message: still stable after all these years. Extroverts become slightly less extroverted; the acutely shy appear a little less so, but the fundamentals remain much the same. Personal crises can affect the way we cope with things: we might take up or drop drink, drugs, religion or relaxation techniques, which can be have pretty dramatic effects. Skills can be improved, and new ones introduced, but at rather different rates. People can be groomed for a job. Just as politicians are carefully repackaged through dress, hairstyle and speech specialists, so people can be sent on training courses, diplomas or experimental weekends. But there is a cost to all this which may be more than the price of the course. Better to select for what you actually see rather than attempt to change it.。

ACOUISITION When should a company consider acquisition as a way forward?
There are many circumstances in which a company may wish to take over another organisation through an acquisition. The need to keep up with a changing environment often dominates thinking about acquisitions. One compelling reason to develop by acquisition is the speed with which it allows the company to enter new product or market areas. This is particularly true of e-commerce.
The Stars of the Future
A. Existing management research does not tell us much about how to find and develop highflyers, those people who have the potential to reach the top of an organisation. As a result, organisations are left to formulate their own systems. A more effective overall policy for developing future leaders is needed, which is why the London Business School has launched the Tomorrow's Leaders

A long list of sponsors will support the initiative, which will involve a £3-million media campaign and a fortnight of events and exhibitions. The ultimate goal is to persuade more Americans that Britishcompanies have something to interest them. While there have been plenty of trade initiatives in the past, the difference this time round is that considerable thinking and planning have gone into trying to work out just what it is that Americans look forin British products. Instead of exclusively promoting the major corporations, this time there is more emphasis on supporting the smaller, more unusual, niche businesses.Fresh in the memories of all those concerned is the knowledge that America has been the end of many a large and apparently successful business. For Carringtons, a retail group much respected by European customers and investors, America turned out to be a commercial disaster and the belief that they could even show some of the great American stores a retailing trick or two washopelessly over-optimistic.Polly Brown, another very British brand that rode high for years on good profits and huge city confidence, also found that conquering America, in commercial and retailing terms, was not as easy as it had imagined. When it positioned itself in the US as a niche, luxury brand, selling shirts that were priced at $40 in the UK for $125 in the States, the strategy seemed to work. But once its management decided it should take on the middle market, this success rapidly drained away. It was a disastrous mistake and the high cost of the failed American expansion plans played a large role in its decliningfortunes in the mid-nineties.Sarah Scott, managing director of Smythson, the upmarket stationer, has had to think long and hard about what it takes to succeed in Americaand she takes it very seriously indeed. Many British firms are quite patronising about the US, she says. They think that were so much more sophisticated than the Americans. They obviously havent noticed Ralph Lauren, an American who has been much more skilled at tapping into an idealised Englishness than any English company. Also, many companies dont bother to study the market properly and think thatBECause somethings successful in the UK, its bound to be successful over there. You have to look at what you can bring them that they havent already got. On the whole, American companies are brilliant at the mass, middle market and people whove tried to take them on at this level have found it very difficult.商务英语考试中级冲刺模拟题5This time round it is just possible that changing tastes are running in Britains favour. Theenthusiasm for massive, centralised retail chains has decreased. People want things with some sortof individuality; they are fed up with the banal, middle-of-the-road taste that America does so well. They are now looking for the small, the precious, the real thing, and this is precisely what manyof the companies participating in the initiative do best.13 The main reason that the British business people are going toAmerica is toA encourage American consumers to buy their products.B analyse how American companies attract media coverage.C look for financial backing from American investors and banks.D investigate how British and American companies could form partnerships.14 In the writers opinion, the proposed venture will be different to previous onesBECauseA fewer British business leaders will be making the trip.B less well-known companies will be better represented.C the larger companies have decided they will not be participating.D it involves research into how British companies market themselves.15 The writer states that Carringtons was wrong toA be cautious about trading in America.B borrow money from its European investors.C assume it was superior to American rivals.D ignore the advice of its American managers.16 According to the writer, Polly Browns mistake occurred when itA continued to trade despite making a loss.B attempted to attract a different type of customer.C tried to break into too many markets at the same time.D expected American consumers to pay British prices for goods.17 Sarah Scott states that British companies hoping to succeed in America shouldA focus on a gap in the market.B be less concerned with their image.C concentrate on selling products in the mid-price range.D carry out research into the pricing policies of American companies.18 The writer suggests that success in America depends uponA adopting a more American approach to marketing.B persuading the mid-range consumer to pay for quality.C copying the strategies of American companies.D building a reputation as a supplier of unique goods.。

But there’s truth behind her enthusiasm.Take Carole Palmer, the group resources director. She joined 某ero某 in 1978 as a temp and has been in her present role for seven years. ‘某ero某has been good to me over the years,’ she says.‘It has supported me through qualifications … and last year I took part in the vice-president incumbent program.’ Human resources is taken seriously at 某ero某, Palmer says, and the company has apolicy of promoting from within (which would e某plain Moloney’samazement at her colleagues’ longevity). The company takes on only fifteen to twenty graduates each year and Moloney was part of an intake who joined having already acquired a couple of years’ work e 某perience. She started as a project manager for 某ero某 Global Services before moving into sales. Now her responsibility is to‘grow and maintain customer relationships’.Moloney is based at the head office in U某bridge. ‘It’s great in terms of working environment,’ she says. ‘We’ve just got a new provider in the canteen and … we have bra instorming rooms and breakout areas.’ Much of Moloney’s role is visiting clients, so she doesn’t have a permanent desk at head office. ‘I’m a hot-desker, which is good because you get to sit with different people in thehot-desk areas. And you’re given a place to store your things.’ Head office staff numbers between 1,200 and 1,500 people, Palmer says. The company has four other main offices in the UK. The nature of the organization, which encompasses sales and marketing, global services (the biggest division), developing markets, research and development and manufacturing, means that the opportunities at the company vary from service engineers to sales roles and consultants. Perks include a final-salary pension scheme and various discount schemes. The reward and recognition scheme is a little different, and rather nice: ‘Each manager has a budget every year to recognize and reward staff,’ Palmer says. ‘It can be in the form of a meal for two, or a bottle of wine. It can be up to 1,000. There’s therecog nition, and then there’s putting money behind it.’ Moloney, however, likes the non-cash rewards. ‘某ero某 takes care of all its staff but it also recognizes the people who put in the added effort,’ she says. ‘It offers once-in-a-lifetime incentive trips, and recently I organized a sailing trip for my team.’The idea of working abroad with the company appeals to her, and she says that her career goal is to be part of the senior management team. Here’s another employee, it would seem, who is in it for the long haul.( )1.The journalist of this article thinks that .A. staff at 某ero某 are not telling the truth abut the company.B. 某ero某 offers great benefits to staff.C. 某ero某 is the best company in the world.D. 某ero某 has the best working environment.( )2.The company tends to find its new manager .A. only form graduatesB. on training coursesC. from e某isting staffD. from job markets( )3.What does the phrase “to take on” in the sentence “The company takes on on ly fifteen to twenty graduates each year and …” of the second paragraph mean? .A. 商务英语中级阅读练习及解析(1)Questions 1-7Look at the statements below and the article about the development of future business leaders on the opposite page.Which section of the article (A, B, C or D) does each statement (1-7) refer to?For each statement (1-7), mark one letter (A, B, C or D) on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once.1 Managers need to take action to convince high-flyers of their value to the firm.2 Organisations need to look beyond the high-flyers they are currently developing.3 There is a concern that firms investing in training for high-flyers may not gain the benefits themselves.4 Managers need expert assistance from within their own firms in developing high-flyers.5 Firms currently identify high-flyers without the support of aguidance strategy.6 Managers are frequently too busy to deal with the development of high-flyers.7 Firms who work hard on their reputation as an employer will interest high-flyers.The Stars of the FutureA Existing management research does not tell us much about how to find and develop high-flyers, those people who have the potential to reach the top of an organisation. As a result, organisations are left to formulate their own systems. A more effective overall policy for developing future leaders is needed, which is why the London Business School has launched the Tomorrows Leaders Research Group (TLRG). The group contains representatives from 20 firms, and meets regularly to discuss the leadership development of the organisations high-flyers.B TLRG recognises just how significant line managers are in the process of leadership development. Unfortunately, with todays flat organisations, where managers have functional as well as managerial responsibilities, people development all too often falls victim to heavy workloads. One manager in the research group was unconvinced by the logic of sending his best people away on development courses, only to see them poached by another department or, worse still, another firm. This fear of losing high-flyers runs deep in the organisations that makeup the research group.C TLRG argues that the task of management is not necessarily about employee retention, but about creating attraction centres. We must help line managers to realise that if their companies are known as ones that develop their people, they will have a greater appeal to high-flyers, said one advisor. Furthermore, selecting people for, say, a leadership development programme is a sign of commitment from management to an individual. Loyalty can then be more easily demanded in return.D TLRG has concluded that a companys HR specialists need to take action and engage with line managers individually about their role in the development of high-flyers. Indeed, in order to benefit fully from training high-flyers as the senior managers of the future, firms must actually address the development of all managers who will be supporting the high-flyers. Without this, managers will not be in a position to give appropriate advice. And when eventually the high-flyers do move on, new ones will be needed to replace them. The next challenge will be to find a new generation of high-flyers.首先得搞明白的是这篇文章究竟讲的什么。

If you are working through a recruiting company, they might beable to give you a range. Finally, you can try using networking web sites like LinkedIn to connect with people in thefield or company you are applying to, who in turn could provide you with some guidance. It might help to dig through the annual reports of the company you are applying to andread recent news reports, in order to figure out how the company is doing financially. A largerand more successful company can afford to pay higher salaries than a smaller or struggling one.2. Curb your eagernessAs with any negotiation, if you convey your eagerness for something, you lose yourbargaining power. Whoever shows more interest always gets less, says Sanjay Muthal, managing director of executive search firm NuGrid Consulting Pvt. Ltd., in Mumbai.Candidates need to strike a balance between appearing interested in the particular job,and not appearing too eager.Mr. Muthal advises talking about macro issues such as the role youre applying for andpotential responsibilities, rather than discussing the nitty-gritty of expected pay. If yougenerate a terrific impression, then salary follows, he says.3. Wait to be askedCandidates should not begin the salary discussion because that makes them come acrossas being too money-minded, says Zak Parker, regional HR director of North Africa, Middle East& Southern Asia for security services firm G4S PLC.Wait for the company to start the salary negotiation. It might help to delay the discussiontill all interview rounds are over. The further along you are in the interview process, the moreinterested the hiring managers would be in you. That puts you in a better position to ask for ahighersalary, because the manager might go back to the human resources team or thebudgeting team to ask for more money for you.Language Points:Exam Focus:(1)A Ask friends for help.B Digging through daily newspaper.C Try to get connected with your recruitingcompany.D Surf the Internet for more details.(2)A If you are interested in your job, you will be better paid.B Eagerness is essential in that it gives your employer more pressure on salary issue.C Make sure to get a job that you are interested in.D Try to hide your feelings so as not to lose the bargaining power.Oral Topic:In what way can you persuade your boss to raise your salary?

Remember what may be an important issue to a team member may be less so to you: however, the individual may need your support working through that issue to focus on more important goals.
