this year? Here are some fashion tips from our experts you should keep in mind:Dress to impress:Stylist and business consultant Daniela Smith says,“Girls should keep in mind that your college professors will often be the bridge that connects you to your future career and your classmates will become your professional network. You don’t need to dress like you’re going to the office, but you should display an ability to properly present yourself with appropriate maturity and confidence, and look puttogether.”Logo mania(品牌狂热症):Wearing the logos of brands aimed at younger customers physically identifies you as part of that age group,so consider the targeted age group of the stores you shop at.It’s tempting to load up on logos, especially wellknown logos that signify highend brands. But consider this:college is a time of selfdiscovery,a chance to develop your own personal style.Instead of wearing logos head to toe,“walking advertisement”style, why not express who you really are?Wear real pants:The combination of leggings and baggy shirts is all too common on college campuses.Smith points out that leggings, yoga pants, and sweatpants are entirely unacceptable in public unless you’re exercising.Although leggings worn as pants are a common trend among high school and college girls, they are not an appropriate choice for daywear. As a young woman, your style choice should begin to reflect your maturity level. So,get rid of leggings and wear real pants!Keep the cute factor to a minimum:Stay away from sweaters and T-shirts with smiling animals, cartoon characters,or Hello Kitty on them.Sure, kittens might be cute, but they’re not doing you any favors in the style department.Dressing too cutesy can take years off your look, and not necessarily in a good way!1.The Most noticeably, a Chinese name is written with the surname first and the given name second. For example, the basketball player who is commonly called Yao Ming (whose name in the English order should actually be Ming Yao), would be called “Mr.Yao”,not “Mr. Ming”.However, some Chinese people who emigrate (移民)to or do business with Western countries sometimes adopt (采纳) a westernized name by simply changing the “surname — given name”order to “given name — surname”,or adding a Western first name to their surname, which is then written in the usual Western order with the surname last. Other Chinese people sometimes take a combined name, consisting of a Western first name, surname, and Chinese given name, and keep it in that order.Traditional naming plans often followed a pattern of using a generation name as part of a two-character given name; however, this is less used today, especially in the mainland, where any given names use only one character. However, it is still the standard among the Chinese populations of Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. When a generation name is used as part of a two-character given name, it can be confusing to refer to someone by the first part of their given name only as it will generally be their generation name. This should be the case regardless of whether the surname is used. For example, referring to Zhao Baoshan as Bao or Zhao Bao would be confusing as this could just easily refer to his brother (Zhao Baohai). However, this does commonly happen in Western societies. The first part of the given name is frequently mistakenly used as the first name when the given name is not adjoined (靠近).In addition to the given name, many Chinese have various kinds of nicknames.1.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.How a Chinese name is formed.B.What is the difference between Chinese names and Western ones.C.What a Chinese name means.D.In which way you can choose a name.2.The main idea of the first paragraph is probably that ________.A.Chinese names are easier to remember than Western onesB.Chinese names are written in the same order as Western onesC.personal names in different cultures follow different habitsD.there is a surname and a given name in both Chinese culture and Western culture3.According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?A.There are three ways for Chinese who want to have a foreign name.B.At present many Chinese people prefer to have two-character names.C.Many Chinese people have not only a given name but a nickname as well.D.In Chinese traditional culture, there was often one character in a given name.4.What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?A.In Western culture, the generation name is not used in the first part of their given name.B.Chinese people seldom refer to others only by their generation name.C.The surname should be used when referring to a person with a generation name.D.If the generation name is close to the given name, it will be taken as the first name.Ⅶ.任务型阅读Public Speaking Training·Get a coach1.________,so get help. It's hoped that the activity will help put an end to the practice.Shark fin soup is also eaten in the United States. Here's what happened. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches! The driver of the other car, who almost caused a big accident, started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”.Many people are like garbage (rubbish) trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy with what you did.I started thinking, how often do I let garbage trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets? It was that day I said, “I'm not going to do anymore.”Good leaders know they have to be ready for their next meeting. Good parents know that they have to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses. Leaders and parents know that they have to be fully present, and at their best for the people they care about. The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by? Here's my bet. You'll be happier. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't.5.How did the taxi driver respond to the behaviour of the driver of the black car?A.He yelled back at the driver.B.He sent the driver to the hospital.C.He was friendly towards the driver.D.He dumped some garbage in front of his car.6.What does the taxi driver think of people according to Paragraph 3?A.Many people like to drive garbage trucks.B.Many people dump garbage wherever they like.C.Many people are warm-hearted to make others happy.D.Many people tend to be very much depressed.7.What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A.The author used to have a lot of garbage trucks.B.The author used to complain a lot.C.The author used to have a lot of money.D.The author used to be a good manager.8.According to the passage, what should you do if people “dump garbage” on you?A.Ignore them and go on with our own work.B.Try our best to persuade them not to do that again.C.Tell them to dump the garbage in the right place.D.Take over their work and carry the garbage to somewhere else.CMost funny stories are based on comic situations. In spite of national differences, certain funny situations have a universal attraction. No matter where you live, you would find it difficultnot to laugh at, say Charlie Chaplin's early films. However,a new type of humour, which starts largely from the US has recently come into fashion. It is called “sick humour”.Comedians base their jokes on tragic situations like violent death or serious accidents. The following “sick humour” will enable you to amuse yourself.A man who had broken his right leg was taken to hospital a few weeks before Christmas. From the moment he arrived there, he kept on bothering his doctor to tell him when he would be able to go home.He was afraid of having to spend Christmas in hospital.Though the doctor did his best, the patient's recovery was slow.On Christmas Day, the man still had his right leg in plaster (石膏).He spent a miserable day in bed thinking of all the fun he was missing. The following day, however, the doctor consoled him by telling him that his chances of being able to leave hospital in time for New Year celebrations were good. The man took heart and, sure enough, on New Year's Eve he was able to hobble (蹒跚) along to a party. To make up for his unpleasant experiences in hospital, the man drank a little more than it was good for him.In the process, he enjoyed himself thoroughly and kept telling everybody how much he hated hospitals. He was still murmuring something about hospitals at the end of the party when he slipped on a piece of ice and broke his left leg.9.According to the passage, which of the following is right?A.All the humour stories are funny in spite of different nationalities.B.One can realize the humour of the stories in his own country.C.Charlie Chaplin made it difficult to laugh at his action.D.Almost all the audiences can be made laugh at some famous comedians' actions.10.What does the underlined word “consoled” mean?A.Comforted.B.Overcame.C.Confused. D.Disturbed.11.What can we infer from the passage?A.No pains, no gains.B.Extreme joy begets sorrow.C.Once a thief, always a thief.D.Good medicine tastes bitter.12.What's the main idea of the passage?A.A new kind of humour came into being.B.How to cure your legs is important.C.Christmas is more necessary than anything else.D.Holding a party is interesting for the westerners.DI had just gone to bed after a very hard day when the phone rang. It was an eccentric (怪僻的) farmer.I had never met him before although I had often heard people talk about him. He sounded quite nervous and he had been talking for a minute or so before I understood anything. Even then all I could make_out was that someone called Milly had had a very bad accident. I hadn't the slightest idea who she was but I obviously had to go.It had been snowing heavily that day and I didn't know the way. I had been driving for at least an hour when I finally found his place. He was standing there, waiting for me. It seemed Milly had died.“She meant more to me than anyone ... even my own wife!”he said. I could see that he had been crying. I thought something terrible had taken place, a possible scandal (丑闻). I was even more shocked when he told me he had put her in the barn (厩).“I wouldn't leave her out in the cold,” he said.Milly had clearly been a secret lover of his.I was about to tell him he could not expect me to cover anything up when he opened the barn door.He lifted his candle and I saw a dark figure on the ground.“She was such a good cow!I wouldn't let anyone but a doctor touch her!”he said, and burst into tears again.13.The underlined phrase “make out” in the first paragraph means “________”.A.expect B.understandC.see clearly D.hear clearly14.Before he arrived at the farmer's house, the writer expected to see Milly lying ________.A.on the ground of a barn B.on the floor of a roomC.in bed in a room D.in bed in a barn15.What do we know about Milly from the story?A.She had met with an accident.B.She had caused a scandal.C.She was seriously ill.D.She was hidden somewhere.Ⅱ.任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations. Institute's Roots and Shoots program and Beijing Zoo to protect sharks. An
exhibit at the zoo, “The Price Behind the Taste — Protect Sharks. Don't Eat Shark Fins”,was designed to tell people that shark finning is cruel and unnecessary. It's hoped that the activity will help put an end to the practice.
Shark fin soup is also eaten in the United States. In fact, the numbers of some shark species in US waters have dropped 90 percent in the last 30 years. To slow the fall, laws against the sale of shark fins have been passed in several states, including Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, and California.
It's hoped that with our help, sharks will continue to swim in the ocean for many more millions of years.

The key to happiness is how quickly you can get back your focus on what's important.—Anonymous
Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab.
This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call “The Law of the Garbage Truck”.。
