Ⅰ. 阅读理解Popular culture often shows alcohol as a big part of the college experience in theUnited States. Television programs and movies about American college life have imagesof wild parties with young people either drinking alcohol or holding a drink. Now, a new study of alcohol use suggests that some college students may be missing meals so they can have more drinks or get drunk faster. Researchers are callingthis kind of behavior “drunkorexia”.The study involved 1, 184 college students between the ages of 18 and 26.Researchers found that 80 percent of those studied had demonstrated some kind ofdrunkorexia in the past three months. They had performed heavy physical exercise, eaten low calorie meals or even missed meals for up to a full day before drinking alcohol.Dipali Rinker organized the study and presented its findings to the Research Societyon Alcoholism in June. She says students see drunkorexia as a way to keep their bodyweight down while drinking alcohol. And it causes them to feel the effects of alcohol quickly and with more intensity(强度). Rinker says unhealthy eating habits are only oneof the reasons why this type of behavior is dangerous. Heavy drinking is linked to drunk driving, unprotected sex, and alcohol poisoning. George Koob, who directs a U. S. governmental agency that studies alcohol related problems, says that the percent of students using alcohol has not increased in recent years. But what worries him is that the number of students drinking to the point of “blacking out” has increased. Blacking out is when a person drinks so much alcohol he has no memory of his actions when drunk. Koob notes that college students in Canada and Europe also face issues with alcohol. But he feels a big part of the problem is that Americans do not fully understand alcohol’s effects. Most people do not know the part of the brain where decisions are made is not fully developed until age 25 and that alcohol harms the development of that part of the brain, he adds. 1. What is the purpose of the behavior “drunkorexia”? A. To get drunk. B. To drink more alcohol. C. To take exercise. D. To lose weight. 2. What can heavy drinking result in? A. Unhealthy eating habits. B. Drunkorexia. C. Alcohol poisoning. D. Quick response. 3. Which of the following is the result of blacking out? A. Missing meals. B. Forgetting something one did. C. Having unprotected sex. D. Oct. 29.BSeveral years ago, I received an e-mail from a total stranger — a 17-year-old girl named Monica Gottlieb, who lived in Vienna. In poor English, she explained that she was doing an online search for people who shared the same names as members of her family. She tried her 19-year-old brother’s name — Marcus, and that was how she hit upon me. Monica asked me to write back and tell her a little something about myself, which I did.Not long after our first exchanges, Monica’s mother, Regine, wrote to me. Regine’s English was a little better than Monica, so she was able to provide more details about their life in Vienna. She also mentioned that she and her husband Michael were planning their first visit to the US. As motorcycle lovers, they intended to make a two-wheeled tour of California and the Southwestern states. She wondered if I could tell her something that I thought they should know before they began their great adventure.I spent about an hour putting together what I considered reasonably practical advice and sent it along. Regine wrote back with thanks, and told me if I came to Vienna, I should consider the Gottlieb family home as my own. She even offered me both a room and a key to the house. The Gottliebs eventually made their motorcycle trip and enjoyed every minute of it. Eight months later, I was welcomed to Austria by the Gottlieb family. We got to know each other fairly quickly. Michael and I even seemed to hit it off particularly well. Almost the same age, and sharing a similar sense of humor, we were soon so comfortable with each other.A few days later, Michael, Regine, and I were walking off the big meal we had just had at an open-air restaurant. As we walked and chatted, an older man coming toward us said something in German to Regine. She replied politely, laughing. After he passed by, I asked Regine if the man was a friend.“No,” she said. “He looked at you and Michael and said, ‘It’s nice to see two brothers out for a walk together.’”Brothers? Well — not quite. One of the latest such books is entitled Maximise Your Body Potential: Lifetime Skills for Successful Weight Management, and is written by psychologist Joyce Nash, Ph.D.Dr. Nash presents some interesting statistics which show that, despite the fact that as a country we are growing fatter, at any given time, tens of millions of Americans are dieting. A quarter of all adult men and nearly half of all adult women are actively trying to lose weight. She categorizes (分类) the different stages that generally happen before the decision to try to lose weight. “Those who aren’t actively dieting and are just talking about it, are stuck in either what’s called the contemplation stage or the preparation stage. The contemplation stage is the one in which you want to change, but you are not quite ready; you can think of both the pros and cons of changing, but they balance each other out. In the preparation stage, you know you want to take action, you realize the pros of weight loss outweigh the cons, but you aren’t sure how to begin.”Believe it or not, Dr. Nash even says that now is not always the right time to begin a weight-loss program. “If you jump into the action stage before you’ve done enough thinking in the preparation stage — deciding when to do this, how to do this, and what the potential barriers are — then you can actually set yourself up f or failure. That’s when people who start a diet fall off it, and pretty soon arrive at the notion, ‘I can’t do this. I’m a failure. I’ll never be able to do this.’”Surprisingly, Dr. Nash says that about one-third of all the people who come to see a psychologist such as herself, for help with an eating disorder, are binge eaters, and they are usually overweight.Dr. Nash explains that binge eating is “eating an amount of food that is larger than most people would eat under similar situations, and an experience of not being able to stop it or control it.”28. We can remember our first (less than successful) go at skateboarding, as well as the first time we managed to stand up on one of those surfboards. It was so much fun that we were hooked for life. However, not everyone thinks that introducing children to extreme sports is a good idea.In the article from The New York Times, writer Jon Lackman considers whether sports like snowboarding, climbing and skateboarding could be dangerous to the growing bodies of young children and looks for advice from medical professionals.“Kids aren’t mentally ready for these activities,” says professor of orthopaedics (矫形外科), Dr. Vani Sabesan. “They tend to underestimate (低估) the risks, and their parents can’t always be trusted to keep them in check.”Sabesan is particularly worried about the effects of extreme sports on TV and the Internet on children. “What we’re seeing is a lot of kids thinking maybe they can do what these professional athletes can do.”As someone who was encouraged to give bodyboarding a go by the age of five and then presented with a surfboard aged seven, I think these worries are a little overstated (夸大的), if not misplaced.Extreme sports can be dangerous, yes, but there’s as much chance of falling off your bike or your roller skates as off a skateboard or surfboard. My own experience of extr eme sports leads me to think that I’ll allow my own kids to try them in the same way my parents allowed me.In sports such as surfing and snowboarding, there’s a sense of adventure and courage that is important to instill (慢慢灌输) in young children.Did I fall off my surfboard? All the time. Did I get back on? Every time. Are the more extreme sports too dangerous for younger kids and better saved for teenagers? Are extreme sports a great experience for all children to have and a great way to make the most out of your childhood?32. What does the underlined word “hooked” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. Warned.B. Cheated.C. Attracted.D. Confused.33. What’s Jon Lackman’s attitude towards kids taking part in extreme sports?A. Amazed.B. Doubtful.C. Admiring.D. Supportive.34. What did the author’s parents expect him to do when he was very young?A. To have a spirit of adventure.B. To set a good example to others.C. To become a professional athlete.D. To get away from extreme sports.35. What does the author think of extreme sports?A. They are really very dangerous for kids.B. They are as easy to learn as roller skating.C. They are helpful for kids to find their courage.D. They are more suitable for teenagers than kids.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)The night the Titanic sankFrom a high place on the ship, Fred Fleet, who worked on the Titanic, saw the iceberg (冰山) just a few hundred metres away. I thought I would help the world out a little and explain what real, true friends are.Friends don’t have to be exactly the same. Friends have similarities but they also have their differences. The key to opening up the world of friendship is not only to expand similarities but also to accept each other’s faults, because you can’t ever judge your friend.Friends have to argue! No one likes to argue but it is necessary to have a healthy friendship, because if you agree on everything, either you aren’t being true to each other or one of you is trying a little too hard to please the other. You have to be comfortable together or else you just aren’t going to click. If you feel uneasy around the person then something isn’t quite right.Friends love unconditionally. They have their little angry moments but what’s done is done and all is forgiven and forgotten. Why let something that happened in the past ruin what happiness you could have in the future?Believe in love at first sight because the same thing happens in friendship. Some people think that you have to know someone really well to become good friends. Trust me, it’s not true. These are only a few of the basics. Just remember, friends are forever. Don’t disrespect your friends, love them instead.36. The underlined sentence in the passage means that “”.A. you shouldn’t drop him / her a lineB. you can’t be comfortableC. you will feel angryD. you can’t be friends37. According to the author’s words, true friends .A. must be similar to each otherB. do not argueC. must be honestD. must always love each other38. The author writes the passage to .A. explain what happiness means to peopleB. call on people to show more love to othersC. make people understand what a true friendship meansD. ask people to make as many friends as possibleBCompassion(同情,怜悯) is a desire within us to help others. With effort, we can translate compassion into actions. An experience last weekend showed me this is true. I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it’s not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if luck had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, and store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up. If anything, he looked more pitiable. “Charge it to me,”was all he said. What I had been feeling was pity. Pity is soft, safe and easy. Compassion, on the other hand, is caring in action. I thanked the second man but told him that was not allowed either. Then I reached into my pocket and paid for the biscuits myself. I reached into my pocket because these two men had reached into my heart and taught me compassion.39. The aged gentleman who wanted to buy the biscuits .A. promised to obey the store rulesB. forgot to take any money with himC. hoped to have the food first and pay laterD. could not afford anything more expensive40. Which of the following best describes the old gentleman?A. Kind and lucky.B. Poor and lonely.C. Friendly and helpful.D. Hurt and disappointed.41. The writer acted upon the store rules because .A. he wanted to keep his present jobB. he felt no pity for the old gentlemanC. he considered the old man dishonestD. he expected someone else to pay for the old man42. What does the writer learn from his experience?A. Wealth is more important than anything else.B. Helping others is easier said than done.C. Experience can not be gained through practice.D. Obeying the rules means more than compassion.CJob interviews are all about finding the right fit between the employer and potential(有潜力的) employee. The following interview styles were techniques used by Hiring Managers, hiring for Houston Jobs:Screening InterviewScreening Interview: A member of the human resources department usually conducts the screening interview in order to weed out unqualified candidates. Providing facts about your skills is more important than establishing rapport(和善). Provide answers to their questions, and never volunteer any additional information. That information could work against you.One-on-One InterviewIn a one-on-one interview, the interviewer wants to see if you will fit in with the company, and how your skills will complement the rest of the department. Your goal in a one-on-one interview is to establish rapport with the interviewer and show him or her that your qualifications will benefit the company.Lunch InterviewThe same rules apply in lunch interviews as in those held at the office. The setting may be more casual, but remember it is a business lunch and you are being watched carefully. Use the lunch interview to develop common ground with your interviewer. Follow his or her lead in both selection of food and in etiquette(礼节).Committee InterviewCommittee interviews are a common practice. You will face several members of the company who have a say in whether you are hired. When answering questions from several people, speak directly to the person asking the question. It is not necessary to answer to the group.Group InterviewA group interview is usually designed to uncover the leadership potential of prospective managers and employees who will be dealing with the public. The front-runner candidates are gathered together in an informal, discussion-type interview. A subject is introduced and the inter-viewer will start off the discussion. The goal of the group interview is to see how you interactwith others and how you use your knowledge and reasoning powers to win others over.43. A candidate is .A. someone who is running in an election or applying for a jobB. someone who can make the decision in an interviewC. a person who holds the interviewD. someone who has been accepted by the interviewer44. In a Committee Interview, you will .A. try to answer more difficult questionsB. have to face more than one interviewersC. be offered a lunch after thatD. try to answer the question before othersDBetty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles(困扰) old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa? Talking? What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?Betty shrugs. Talk? We’re friends.Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist(心理学家)Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable”.More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife / husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress(感情危机). “Most women,”says Rubin, “identified(认定) at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”“In general,”writes Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.”For the most part, Rubin says, interactions(交往) between men are emotionally controlled—a good fit with the social requirements of “manly behavior”.“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,”Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”(2001年高考题)46. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You’ll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. A program can select the type of news you want, and an electronic voice will distribute (分类) stories about the latest events, guided by the program. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer file if you like. These are among the predictions (预报) from communications experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events. Most of the technology is available now, but convincing more people that they don’t need paper to read is the next step. But resistance (反抗) to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalism. Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.Despite technological advances, it could take decades to replace newsprint with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the change over because people need to buy computers and because newspapers have established financial interests in the paper industry. 51. Let us examine some of the expressions that use “hand”.We will get a hand in this way. “To get a hand in” is to begin a job, to begin to know something about it. When we learn completely, we will be able to do it hands down. If we do the job well, we may end up with the upper hand. On the other hand, if the situation gets out of hand, it is out of control. We must consider another way of expressing phrase---- to hand it to someone. For example, I must hand it to you for understanding what we have discussed this far. You can also lend a hand to someone but without really giving up your hand. You lend a hand when you help someone. If someone is kind enough to lend us a hand then we surely do not want to bite the hand that feeds us. We do not want to repay his kindness by treating him badly. Now, we have a free hand to continue examining other “hand” expressions. It means you are free to act without getting permission from someone else.Maybe you can find a friend who wants to take a hand in our project. It would have to be someone who was interested in these expressions. Your friend may want to work hand in glove with us. That isgood because that means he wants to work as closely with us as a glove covers the hand. Of course, there is a danger that he may look at our project and decide to take it in hand. That means he wants to tale it over. If that happens, we may throw up our hands because the situation seams hopeless. In fact, we may decide that it is time for us to end this project to wash our hands of “ hand” expressions.46.We are ready to do a certain job, we may say; Let’s______________.A. get out of handB. get a hand inC. lend a handD. take a hand in47.Which of the following has an unpleasant meaning?A. Hands downB. bite the hand that feeds usC. take a hand inD. hand in glove48.Something is so easy to do. So you can do it____________.A. hands downB. on the other handC. the upper handD. hand in glove49.What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To tell us the fact that there are many phrases with “hands”.B. To prove the importance of the word “ hand ”.C. To tell us some phrases with “ hand ”.D. To make us laugh.B篇If there is one thing I’m quite sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we still be reading newspapers. Not those newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of the news from the television or have the radio switched on in the background or in the car. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for mostpeople a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The basic British character won’t change, and one of the characteristics of the British is that we don’t much like talking to each other when we get up. So what better way is there to keep yourself thinking in the morning than to wrap yourself in a newspaper?Over the past couple of centuries, human beings have developed a close relationship with the newspaper. It has become as natural as breathing or enjoying the sun. And it is not just the British who love newspapers. On suburban trains in Calcutta, for instance, just oneperson in the whole car will buy a newspaper and read aloud the bestbits to his fellow passengers, much to everybody’s enjoyment. The nature of what is news may change. What essentially (本质上) makes news is what affects our lives and the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering. In the future I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do, whether it’s love or depression. We develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are. It’s quite possible that in the next century newspaper will be transmitted electronically from the national equivalents of Fleet Street (伦敦的舰队街,以报馆集中而著称) and printed out in our own homes. In fact, I’m pretty sure that that is how it will happen in future. You’ll be probably selecting from a menu, making up your own bespoke newspaper by picking out the things you want to read and say. You might even have an intelligent screening device (装置) to do the job for you.I think people have got it wrong when they talk about the competition between the different media. They actually have a relationship, feeding off each other. It was once predicted that television would kill off newspapers, which hasn’t happened. What is read on the printed page is more enduring (持久的) than pictures on a flickering screen or sound lost in the sky. And as for the Internet,it’s never really satisfying to read something just on a screen.50. The author of the passage is most probably from_______________.A. RussiaB. IndiaC. BritainD. America51. According to the passage, the future of newspapers____________.A. will be mainly connected with scientific researchB. will report more important political activitiesC. will directly cover more on scientific researchD. will build a bridge between different people52. The underlined part “bespoke newspaper” of the passage probably refers to _____________.A. a newspaper which dares to report the truthB. a newspaper edited to one’s own interestC. a newspaper edited and published for the publicD. a newspaper which only covers the life of family members53. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A. It was centuries ago that newspapers came into being .B. Televisions have taken the place of newspapers .C. The Internet will gradually take the place of newspapers.D. The nature of news may remain the same over generations.

单元检测(三)Unit 3 A healthy life(满分:120分限时:10()分钟)I .阅读理解AFew laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled 一to $1.01 per pack 一smokers have jammed telephone "quit lines" across the country seeking to kick the habit. This is not a surprise to public health advocates・ They" ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase. The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health・ They raise money and most particularly, and they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted・ Yet the rate of taxation varies widely. In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday・ Charleston, S, C・, where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation. The price was $4.78・The influence is obvious・In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys 一13.8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky, Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records.Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans “who choose to smoke.”That" s true, but there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today' s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.1 • The text is mainly about _______ ・A ・ the price of cigarettesB ・ tie rate of teen smokingC・ the effect of tobacco tax increase D. the differences in tobacco tax rate2. The underlined word “deter" in Paragraph 3 most probably means _________ .A. prevent B • removeC. benefitD. free3. Rogers' attitude towards the low-income smokers might be that ofA. tolerance B • unconcernC. doubtD. sympathy4.Whcit can we learn from the last paragraph?A.The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.B- Low-income Americans are more likely to fall ill.C.Future generations will be hooked on smoking・D.Adults will depend more on their families.BAsk any group of teenagers in the UK what they most like to eat, and foods like pizzas, curries, pasta, burgers and chips are bound to get a mention 一and many young people would probably also list hanging out at the local fast-food restaurant as one of their favorite pastimes (V肖遣)•But what teenagers like to eat is not necessarily what they should be eating. According to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, far too many young people in the UK between the ages of 4 and 18 consume too much fat, sugar and salt in their diet and take in too many calories• Meanwhile their intake of starchy carbohydrates (含淀粉的碳水化合物),fibre, iron, vitamins and calcium is too low.For a growing body, eating foods containing plenty of calcium, such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, is particularly important as calcium is essential for the development of healthy, strong bones. Similarly, foods that are rich in iron are good for young, rapidly developing bodies, so red meat, bread, green vegetables, dried fruit and fortified (营养强化白勺)breakfast cereals are also recommended. It is during our teenage years that lifestyle habits can become entrenched (确立的),so it is crucial that young people are educated about what foods are good for them. In 2005, and in an attempt to change eating habits and open teenagers' minds to new flavours and new tastes, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver launched a "Feed Me Better^ campaign. As a part of television series, "Jamie" s School Diners", he worked with teachers and cooks in a number of schools across the UK to provide more healthy, nutritious school meal options. Although there was initial resistance from some teenagers and parents, the campaign was generally hailed as (被赞为)a huge success and helped to influence governmental policy on nutritional standards for school meals. No one expects to end the teenage love affair with fast and junk food but, hopefully, if projects like “Feed Me Better^ and the Government,s own "Change 4 Life" campaign continue to give out the right messages, more young people will understand the importance of balancing occasional treats with healthier food options・5.What can we conclude from the first two paragraphs?A・ British teenagers eat too much junk food・B.British teenagers need to take in more calcium・C.What British teenagers like to eat is probably what their bodies need・D・ British teenagers should reduce their intake of starchy carbohydrates・6・ Young people need calcium and iron_______ .A.to improve their brainpower B ・ to build healthy strong bodiesC. to provide energy for their bodyD. to help change their eating habits7・ According to the article, Jamie Oliver launched a campaign at schools to _______A.show off his excellent cooking skillsB • teach stud ents how to cook nutritious mealsC・ introduce governmenfal policy on nutritional standards for school mealsD.draw the public' s attention to the importance of nutritious school meals8.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the article?A.Teenagers shouldn,t eat any junk food at all.B.It is difficult to make children understand the importance of a healthy diet.C.It is OK to eat a little bit junk food, as long as you eat healthily most of the time・D.Our eating habits are developed in our teenage years and then influence our lifestyle・cRetail therapy (购物疗法)really does exist, and the desire to shop could be caused by a fear of death・ It has long been considered as the ultimate (终极的)way to let off stress by some members of the women. This compulsive and impulsive spending is likely to produce even greater stress and lower well-being・ Essentially, materialism appears to make bad events even worse. ”D匚Ruvio led a two-part study of Israeli citizens living in a town that came under extreme rocket attacks for about six months in 2007. She compared 139 residents of the southern town with 170 from another town that was not under attack to see how their symptoms of post-traumatic stress andshopping habits varied. De Ruvio analyzed the psychological condition of the two groups and found that, when faced with a mortal threat, those who are highly materialistic suffered much higher levels of post-traumatic stress, while their tendency to buy impulsively and compulsively was increased・D E Ruvio said: 'The relationship between materialism and stress may be more harmful than commonly thought."The second stage of their research, published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, surveyed 855 Americans about their materialistic nature and fear of death. They found shopping was used to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety about death among more materialistic people, but this was in response to fear of a variety of life-threatening events like car accidents, criminal attacks and natural disasters・9.Which of the following opinions is NOT right according to the text?A.The materialistic believe terrorism and war more stressful than others.B.Psychologists believe acts of terrorism, diseases and natural disasters cause the rise of materialism ・C・ The scientists think people with possession obsessions often have higher self-respect.D・ The scientists think people with possession obsessions have more severe mental trauma>10.What,s the result about D匚Ruvio" s research?A. Their teachers completed questionnaires (调查表)about the students' academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school."At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skill s, ” according to the journal article・ Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.u Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker, n Orpinas said, “when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. AMy father's playing the violin lights up any room. To him, it is an instrument of faith, hope and charity. My mother used to joke, “Your papa would play his violin if the world was about to blow up.”Once_Dad_came_about_as_close_to_that_as_could_ever_be_po ssible. In the early years of the 20th century, the boll weevil (棉铃象鼻虫) began destroying the cotton farms in the southern USA.In May 1910, folks all over the nation were talking about Halley's Comet (哈雷彗星). There were all sorts of frightening stories about it, the main one being that the world would pass through its tail, said to be millions of miles long.Between the threats of the comet and weevils, the farmers were running low on optimism. One night, they gathered at our farm to discuss what to do. Will Bowen, a local man, suggested, “Charley, how about giving us a little music?”“I don't think anybody'd want to hear me tonight,”Dad replied.“Come on, Mr. Nordyke,” one of the younger women urged. “Play for us!”Dad had a knack (本领) for getting people in the mood for his music. He played church songs, and then shifted to war songs. By thetime he had finished performing, people were stamping their feet, clapping their hands and yelling. All of our neighbors went home whistling. Very few remembered to look to see whether the comet was still around.Another evening, Will Bowen called Dad on the telephone and said, “Charley, I'm downhearted and blue. Could you play a tune or two for me through the phone?”Dad handed the receiver to me and then set about playing the songs he had performed that night. I could hear Mr. Bowen whistling and yelling.By the time the tune was finished there were half a dozen neighbors on the line. They talked about how wonderful the music sounded over the telephone. They made numerous requests; I relayed them to Dad and he played. Our broadcasts became regular features of community life. When the weather was bad in winter and farmers were forced to remain in the house, someone would ring us and ask Dad to play. Usually it developed into a network affair. Our phone kept ringing with requests for music until radio came into fashion.语篇解读本文是一篇记叙文。

Dad wasn't around, so I never knew him well. He killed himself when I was three years old, leaving mom with the job of raising nine kids. She was a very hard worker, and in order to make ends meet, she hardly ever rested. With my mom as my example, I learned that hard work is the best way to get what you want.Even as a little boy, I knew I was going to be successful. Of course, I dreamed about what I wanted to be when I grew up. But regardless of what I chose, I wanted to make my brothers, sisters and mom proud of me—not only by being successful in what I chose to do, but also as a person who could be looked up to for the right reasons.Surprising as it might seem, basketball wasn't in my plans. One day, my mom cut a rim(边缘) off an old water barrel and then held it up for me to throw an old rubber ball through. By junior high, I started playing basketball on a team. I loved to compete. There was a positive high I got by going out and playing against other people and working hard to win. For me, it paid off. I just let my success in basketball take its course, but I always put the effort in, every day.I am grateful for the life I've enjoyed as a basketball star. But when I see those shirts that say “Basketball is life”,I think Yeah, right! It is not life. It can be exciting. But the most important thing about basketball is that it gives me a way to do good things for others as I move through this journey called life.16.
