ADear students,Most of us get some exercise walking or riding our bikes to school, but that just isn't enough. Why not get into shape by playing the most popular sport in the world — soccer? Two weeks ago, Ms. Goldstein, the physical education teacher, posted a notice about an exciting new soccer club (for Grades 3-5). To join, all you have to do is sign your name and be at school for the fun of it on Saturday mornings. You'll make new friends and share information about famous teams and players.Ms. Goldstein will teach, so you'll learn basic skills and new techniques (技巧) to improve your game. That's good news because soccer is a game you can love three seasons a year. The only time you can't play is when there is snow. However, it is hard to believe that only nineteen people signed up for the new club. Maybe kids don't want to give up their Saturday mornings. But if you think about how we spend Saturday mornings now, soccer looks good. Doing housework and watching TV are not as much fun as playing soccer with friends. If you didn't sign up because you've never played soccer before, don't worry. Beginners are welcome and Ms. Goldstein will give you more help.Just act now! The equipment is cheap. All you have to bring is your feet. The Students' Union21. Then we went to his house and asked if he could give us our ball. He said, “No”. We felt helpless. But suddenly we came up with an idea. There was a water tank (水箱) behind the man's house. I told Kavya, “We can climb onto the water tank and jump over the gate.” Kavya agreed, but we were both wearing skirts. We couldn't climb in those. “We can get it back tomorrow,” said Kavya. The next day we went there with Kavya's brother Vijay. He said, “Shout loudly if you need me.” Kavya climbed onto the water tank first and then she climbed down into the man's house. I followed her. We were looking under a bed for the ball when we heard a noise. It was Vijay. “Mother is calling you,” he said in a low voice. We hurried out taking the lost ball with us. Along with the ball was a surprise! But we had to leave the house quickly. When we reached Kavya's house, the TV was on. It was news time. I couldn't believe my ears when it said that 20 gold bars were stolen from a gold shop. They showed a picture of the gold bars, which were exactly like the one we had seen in the man's house. We told the story to Kavya's mother right away, and she called the police. Soon the police caught the man. They found all the gold bars in his house. A few days later a policeman came to us and said, “Thank you for helping us catch the guy. Here is abag for all of you.” When we opened it, it was full of storybooks and lovely toys. Standing beside us, Kavya's mother was all smiles.24. Taylore is a kid who passes by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.Last summer four of us rode down the trail behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny. We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飞驰). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on.Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right. I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch up with the girls. It was like a truck winding over a mountain road without brakes (闸). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t.In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed that the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tried enough to want to slow down.I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and comfortable, not even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowed. She gave me a high five. "Wow, you did well, "she said. " I knew you’d go fast when you were ready."No one in the group had even broken a sweat, except me. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not from exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皱纹), glasses and gray hair,I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels.1. How did the race between the girls and the author begin?A. His horse’s gallop made the other horses want to catch up.B. He wanted to show off his riding skills for the girls.C. They wanted to know whose horse could run fastest.D. They teased him about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.2. During the race, ___________.A. the author’s horse outran the girl’s horses the whole timeB. the author was confident that Tawny was in controlC. the girls were so anxious to win that they sweated a lotD. the author’s good performance took Taylore by surprise3. When the race ended, the author’s heart pounded because ________.A. he was feeling thrilled and youngB. it was really tough exercise for himC. he was worried that the girls might be in dangerD. he felt quite embarrassed that he had lost the race4. The phrase " kick up my heels" at the end can be replaced by _________.A. devote myselfB. enjoy myselfC. accept my challengeD. take part in running competition【文章大意】文章描述作者和两个女孩骑马比赛,这让作者感到兴奋,也感到虽然自己上了年纪,但是有一颗年轻的心。

Unit 3 Computers李仕才***阅读理解。
When it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers,is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they're done. These days, the time is everywhere:not just on clocks or watches, but on cellphones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work.New research shows that clock-based work schedules hinder morale(士气)and creativity.Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example:a meeting from 9 a.m.to 10 a.m.,research from 10 a.m.to noon, etc. On the other hand,task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list;each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning. What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways?Does one make us more productive?Better at the tasks at hand?Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities—from project planning, holiday shopping,to yoga—by time or to-do list to measure how they performed under “clock time” vs.“task time”.They found clock-timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives.Task-timers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.The researchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued and under-supported in business culture.Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more task-based planning into their strategies. This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy:work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be,to someextent,clock-timers,task-based timing should be used when they are performing a job that requires more creativity. It'll make those tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.1.What is the way people often do their work according to the author?A.They give priority to the most urgent task on hand.B.They set a time limit for each specific task.C.They combine clock-based and task-based planning.D.They accomplish their tasks one by one.2.What did the researchers find in their experiments on clock-timers?A.They tend to be more productive.B.They seize opportunities as they come up.C.They always get their work done in time.D.They have more control over their lives.3.What is the researchers' opinion about today's business culture?A.It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.B.It attaches more importance to work efficiency than to workers' lives.C.It aims to bring employees' potential and creativity into full play.D.It does not lay enough emphasis on task-based practice.4.From the passage,we can conclude that ________.A.it is important to keep a balance between work and lifeB.task-based timing is preferred for doing creative workC.performing creative jobs tends to make workers happierD.a scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation【解题导语】本文是一篇对时钟型和任务型两种工作方式的研究报告。

Unit 3 Computers李仕才一、阅读理解。
Aging brings wrinkles, sagging bodies and frustrating forgetfulness. But getting older is not all bad for many people. Mounting evidence suggests aging may be a key to happiness. There is conflicting research on the subject, however, and experts say it may all boil down to this: Attitude is everything.Older adults tend to be more optimistic and have a more positive outlook on life than their younger and stressed opposites. The big question is why seniors are happier.A recent study suggests one reason: Older adults remember the past through happy memories. Aging can bring more cheer as people become more comfortable with themselves and their roles in society. The older adults said they were enjoying more time with their family, spending more time on hobbies and having greater financial security and did not have to work. But others are doubtful about the link between happiness and growing older."The notion that those in old age are happiest is misleading," said Richard Easterlin, a professor of economics at the University of Southern California. "It is based on comparing people of different ages who are the same in terms of income, health, family life." Easterlin added, "When you take account of the fact that older people have lower income than younger, are less healthy, and more likely to be living alone, then you will find it hard to accept that they are happier. In fact, scientists have found that as people age, their health declines and social networks disappear as their friends die, which can make the elderly less happy.Even if one does give in to age's dark side, health and happiness don't always go hand-in-hand. It's all about attitude. Research by the Un iversity of Chicago’s Yang suggests that attitude about life and happiness, is partly shaped by the era in which a person was born. It turns out that individuals who adapt the best to changes also have the highest expected levels of happiness.Despite the conflicting findings about aging and happiness, the good news is that there doesn’t appear to be a limit to how much happiness one can achieve in one’slife. “Most people desire happiness,” Easterlin said. “To my knowledge, no one has identified a limit to attainable happiness.”1.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?A. The key factor to older adults’ happinessB. There is a conflict between aging and happinessC. No one can define the limit to happiness.D. The relationship between health and happiness.2.Why are some seniors happier according to some experts?A. They focus on what makes them feel good.B. They have their own circle of friends.C. They have better income after retirement.3.What can we learn from the passage?A. People of the same age have the same sense of happiness.B. Attitude may play a very important role in happiness.C. People who adapt the best to changes are more likely to be unhappy.D. Older adults who have more valuable life experience are more optimistic.4.What’s the topic discussed in the passage?A. Whether aging or attitude brings happiness.B. Why seniors adapt the best to changes in society.C. What the limit to an elder person’s happiness is.D. How older people feel compared with younger people.【文章大意】随着年龄的增加变老,人们的幸福感也是不一样的。

Unit 3 Computers李仕才一、阅读理解Mahendra, a former senior officer at the State Bank of India, talks about his disabled and wounded dogs like a father about his children—with the same love, affection, and warmth. He's a wellknown animal rights activist, the secretary at People for Animals (PFA). But nothing explains Mahendra better than his love for animals. It was this love that led him to establish India's first shelter home for dogs living with disabilities. It all started in 1998 when, while taking a midnight walk, Mahendra came across a very weak dog on the street, whose bones were seen under its skin. Mahendra decided to feed it and for the next couple of days it became the centre of his life, until the night when he found it dead. Since then, Mahendra started providing treatment to all wounded and sick dogs he came across. After some time, somebody told Mahendra about PFA, India's largest animal welfare organization, chaired by Mrs Maneka Gandhi. Mahendra contacted her and, impressed by the work he was doing, Mrs Gandhi asked him to start a PFA chapter in Ahmedabad. Thus, in 2014, he started the shelter. It took a long time for Mahendra to find land where the shelter could be set up. Finally, Ramesh Bhai Patel, a farmer from a village named Jundal, agreed to give his land for nothing. Along with a team of four doctors and many volunteers, the shelter now has twentyfive dogs that were unable to walk at all when they were brought in. Today, they're slowly healing.Dogs that have healed with proper treatment are sent back to where they came from if the environment there is safe. However, the shelter will be home to the blind dogs for all their lives, says Mahendra. The shelter runs on the money coming from Mahendra's own pocket. There have been some financial crunches now and then but Mahendra is determined that no matter what challenges come their way, they'll fight through.1.From Paragraph 1, what can we know about Mahendra?A.His affection for animals.B.His love for senior people.C.His care for disabled people.D.His devotion to protecting his children.2.Mahendra decided to do something for animals because of ________.A.the death of a homeless sick dogB.his meeting with a sick dog one nightC.the encouragement of Mrs GandhiD.his contact with the organization PFA3.In his effort to build the shelter, Mahendra ________.A.spent much money hiring a landB.received little support from othersC.got a free land from a farmerD.was financially supported by the government4.What does the underlined word “crunches” in the last paragraph mean?A.Aids.B.Markets.C.Services.D.Difficulties.参考答案:1.A; 2.A; 3.C; 4.D解析:1.[细节题。

On Christmas Eve, 1944, my grandmother urged my uncle, then 12 years old, to slip out of the concentration camp where they were imprisoned near 15 miles east of Vienna to go to Deutsch-Wagram. “People are charitable around Christmastime,”Grandma Lili said to her son, Gyuri. “Ask for some food. Anything they can spare. Tell them that we’re on the edge of starvation. Tell them that your 3-year-old sister can not get off the bed because she’s outgrown her shoes.”In the dark of that night, Gyuri secretly left the camp and walked nearly four miles to Deutsch-Wagram, the closest town. He happened upon a house and knocked on the front door. A woman opened that door. She was probably alone, her man far away, fighting in the war, her children asleep in their beds. The 12-year-old pieced together in German exactly what his mother had told him to say.“Come back tomorrow," whispered the woman. The next day, my uncle returned. The woman opened the door with a smile. She piled his hands with bread, clothing, a pair of shoes that her child had outgrown and a pair of socks. The woman had knitted warm socks for my mother. After putting on the socks and shoes that fit, my mother got off the bed in delight. Her ragged shoes were passed on to a younger child who was also living in the camp. They shared their unexpected harvest with the entire camp. It was a quiet celebration of human kindness around Christmastime. In April 1945, my mother, uncle and grandmother were liberated. And it was those very socks and shoes that my mother wore as she walked some 28 miles over two days to Bratislava on her walk to a new life.To the unknown giver, I thank you. In the desperation of a cold and snowy land, when many hearts were closed and death was more likely than life, especially forJews, you gave them hope and comfort.1.What did Gyuri manage to do on Christmas Eve?A. Get permitted to go out.B. Receive food and clothing.C. Express what his family needed.D. Celebrate Christmas in the camp2.Why does the author mention shoes so many times?A. To prove the truth of the story.B. To help the development of the story.C. To attract readers’ attention to the story.D. To make clear the background of the story.3.What feeling did the author write the text with?A. DesperationB. Gratefulness.C. ExcitementD. Sorrow.4.What is the passage mainly about?A. Light in darknessB. Peace to common peopleC. Courage in face of dangerD. The influence of Christmas【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

Unit 3 Computers一、阅读理解The wedding tradition of“something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”has been around for hundreds of years. The tradition of carrying or wearing one of each item is said to bring luck and fortune to the newly married couple.Have you ever stopped to think what the saying really means? What is its origin and what does each item represent? The original saying dates back to the Victoria times and states,“something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in your shoe.”Something old A bride may wear or carry something old to represent her continued ties to her family and her old life. Many brides wear a piece of family jewelry as their old item. Some brides wear the wedding dress worn by their mother or grandmother. In many cases, something old may also be something borrowed.Something new Wearing something new is supposed to represent success and hope in the bride's new life and in her marriage. If the bride purchases her wedding dress,it may represent her new item, but any item that is new may be used.Something“new” is usually the easiest kind to fill.Something borrowed The borrowed item should be something borrowed from a friend that is happily married. It is said that their happiness will rub off on you and bring lasting happiness to your marriage. Some brides borrow an item of clothing,a piece of jewelry,a handkerchief or perhaps a beaded(饰以珠子的)purse.Something blue Wearing something blue dates back to ancient times when a blue wedding dress was worn to represent purity, fidelity and love.A silver sixpence Placing a silver sixpence in the bride's left shoe is said to be a symbol of wealth. This not only refers to financial wealth, but also a wealth of happiness and joy throughout her married life.Since most brides probably don't even know what a sixpence is,this part of the tradition is not used very often in modern times. However,if a bride would like to include it in her wedding, she can purchase a silver sixpence from many companies that sell bridal supplies such as garters (袜带)and invitations.1.Why does the first paragraph end with two questions?A.To invite readers to answer them at once.B.To show the importance of this tradition.C.To have readers' interest and attention.D.To test readers' knowledge about wedding.2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Something old might also be something borrowed actually.B.The part of the tradition“a silver sixpence”is never used now.C.The borrowed item can be something borrowed from any friend.D.Something new is usually the most difficult and expensive kind to fill.3.What can we infer from the passage?A.No brides now are not familiar with the silver sixpence.B.Every item represents something good for the new couple.C.The bride will be more beautiful with all these five items.D.Of the five items, something blue is the most important one.4.Which word can replace the underlined word“fidelity” in the sixth paragraph?A.Success. B.Wealth.C.Loyalty. D.Opportunity.【解题导语】本文是一篇总分结构的说明文,介绍了西方一种传统的婚礼习俗的起源和含义。

1.B 词义猜测题。
由本句后面表示转折的“However,I was just quietly crying.”可知,ecstatic应与crying所表达的情绪相反,意为“兴奋的”,故选B项。
2.D 推理判断题。
由第三段,特别是第一句“My homesickness made my freshman year in college difficult, and I comforted myself by throwing myselfinto my academics.”可推断,作者由于想家,大一只能通过不断的学习来安慰自己,故在大学一开始,作者不能很好地适应大学生活,故选D项。
3.A 细节理解题。
由最后一段的最后一句“Her simple rules have served her well, and though I don’t follow them as much as I should, they are there like a beacon, calling for me to follow.”可知,作者虽然不能完全遵守母亲的生活法则,但它们会像灯塔一样不断指引作者,故选A项。
***语法填空。
All of us have read thrilling stories. In many of __1__(they) the hero had only a __2__(limit) and specified time to live. Sometimes it was as long as a year; sometimes as short as twentyfour hours, __3__we were always interested in __4__(discover) just how the dying man chose to spend his last days or his last hours.Such stories set up thinking, wondering __5__we should do under similar circumstances. Such an attitude would stress __8__(sharp) the values of life.I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being__9__(be) stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him __10__(much) appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.1.________ 2.________ 3.________ 4.________ 5.________6.________7.________8.________9.________ 10.________篇章导读:本文是一篇议论文,主要描述了作者对生活的感悟,即努力过好每一天,珍惜眼下的生活。
1.them 考查代词。
介词of后接人称代词的宾格形式。
they的宾格为them。
2.limited
4.discovering 考查非谓语动词。
固定搭配be interested in后接名词或动名词作宾语。
故填discovering。
5.what 考查宾语从句的连接词。
动词wonder后的宾语从句中缺少动词do 的宾语,所以用连接词what引导。
