The only thing you want to eat is a big bowl of chicken soup, like your mom used to make when you were sick as a child. Food cravings are a strong desire for a specific type of food. And they are normal.Scientists at the website How Stuff Works compare hunger and cravings this way. Hunger is a fairly simple connection betwe en the stomach and the brain. They even call it simply “stomach hunger.” When our stomachs burn up all of the food we have eaten, a hormone (荷尔蒙) sends a message to one part of the brain for more food, which regulates our most basic body functions such as thirst, hunger and sleep. The brain then produces a chemical to start the appetite and you eat. Hunger is a function of survival.A craving is more complex. It activates (使活跃) brain areas related to emotion, memory and reward. These are the same areas of the brain activated during drug-craving studies. Because of this, some scientists call food cravings “mind hunger.” People often crave foods that are high in fat and sugar. Foods that are high in fat or high in sugar produce chemicals in the brain. These chemicals give us feelings of pleasure. In a 2007 study, researchers at Cambridge University found that “dieting or restricted eating generally increases the possibility of food craving.” So, the more you deny yourself a food that you want, the more you may crave it. However, fasting is a bit different. They found that eating no food at all for a short period of time lessened food cravings. So, the next time you crave something very special, know that your brain may be more to blame than your stomach.4. The author describes two situations in the first paragraph to _______.A. remind readers of their own special food.B. deepen the understanding of hunger.C. report the discovery of craving study.D. introduce the topic of the whole passage.5. What do we learn about food craving?A. It shows food is linked to feelings.B. It ensures a person survives hunger.C. It means the stomach functions well.D. It proves the brain decides your appetite.6. What's the likely result of dieting?A. The decrease of chemicals.B. The increase of food desire.C. The refusal of fat and sugar.D. The disappearance of appetite.7. In which column of a newspaper can you see this passage?A. EducationB. EntertainmentC. ScienceD. EconomyCIt is widely acknowledged that it is by no means an easy task to bring up a child well. And our ancestors already understood it well. As an old proverb says, “It takes an entire village to raise a child.” That is being quoted more and more often these days. And I’m pleased about that. Parents need to be involved in their children’s education in many ways. Helping children with homework and studying, going on a field trip, teaching a craft or coaching a child’s sports team are all great ways to be involved with your child’s education. And don’t forget to communicate with teachers—they need and respect your input. Studies show that children learn more and schools function better when parents and schools work together.Communities can help children create and achieve new goals. There are other ways such as helping with homework. reading to a child, coaching a children’s team, providing emotional support, helping solve problems and building self-esteem(自尊). Kids need role models and advisers can be role models by sharing their experiences and wisdom.Businesses can also help shape our children’s future—invite a class from your local school to visit your workplace. You may be providing a glimpse that opens a new world of possibilities. Show students what goes on during a typical day. Give a mini course for students: how products are made; how machinery works. You may have a developing electrician, a teacher, a nurse, or even a newspaper reporter on your hands. It really does take an entire village to raise a child. So share the responsibility-and the joy—of bringing a child to his or her full potential.8. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 mean?A. Raising a child well needs various efforts.B. Communities play an important part in raising a child.C. Our ancestors raised a child by using the whole village’s food.D. People in the same village should take care of a child together.9. Which of the following has the author stressed in the text?A. Family education.B. School education.C. Life-long education.D. Early childhood education.10. The author thinks visiting the workplace can have an effect on children’s .A. talentB. healthC. gradesD. occupations11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?A. To show his research on education.B. To call for more attention to children.C. To make examples of education reform.D. To introduce some ways to teach children well.DSitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain that is important for memory, according to a recent study by UCLA researchers of middle-aged and older adults.Studies show that too much sitting, like smoking, increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and premature death. Researchers at UCLA want to see how sedentary behavior (sitting for long periods of time) influences the health of the brain, especially regions of the brain that are important to memory formation.UCLA researchers gathered 35 people aged 45 to 75 and asked about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they spent sitting over the previous work. Each person had a high-resolution MRI (热分辨磁共振成像)scan, which provides a detailed look at the medial temporal lobe, or MTL, a brain region involved in the formation of new memories. The researchers found that sedentary behavior is an important predictor of thinning of the MTL and that physical activity, even at high levels, is not enough to compensate the harmful effects of sitting for long periods.“This study does not prove that too much sitting causes thinner brain structures, but instead that more hours spent sitting are associated with thinner regions,” resea rchers said. In addition, the researchers focused on the hours spent sitting, but did not ask participants if they took breaks during this time. The researchers next hope to follow a group of people for a longer duration to determine if sittingcauses the thinning and what role gender (性別), race, and weight might play in brain health related to sitting.“MTL thinning can be an indication of cognitive (认知的) decline in middle-aged and older adults. Reducing sedentary behavior may be a possible target for measures designed to improve brain health in people at risk for Alzheimer(阿尔茨海默) disease,” researchers said.12. What is the study done by UCLA mainly intended to find out?A. What harm sitting too much causes.B. Why sitting too much is like smoking.C. How too much sitting affects brain health.D. Whether too much sitting causes early death13. Participants were scanned by a high-resolution MRI to .A. evaluate their memory lossB. examine their MTL conditionsC. record their physical activity levelsD. record the length of time for their sitting14. What do UCLA researchers think of their study?A. It is a great success.B. It is of little practical value.C. It must target the young.D. It still needs to be improved.15. What can be the best title for the text?A. Long Sitting Is Bad for Your BrainB. How to Improve Brain HealthC. Sitting Causes Many Health ProblemsD. AChina is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors—silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks(人行道). Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied(陪伴) my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.My first ride home was orderly(守秩序的). To be safe, I stayed with a “pack”of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times.I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully. Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel alive.1. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?A. Because they are traditional and safe.B. Because they are convenient and inexpensive.C. Because they are colorful and available.D. Because they are fast and environment friendly.2. As we were leaving, we found that only minutes earlier an elderly woman had fallen over at the entrance and had hit her head on the concrete. Her husband was with her, but there was blood everywhere and the woman was embarrassed and clearly in shock.Walking towards the scene, Tenyson became very upset about what had happened to the couple. He said to me, “Mum, it’s not much fun falling over in front of everyone.”At the front of the supermarket, a charity(慈善) group had set up a stand selling cooked sausages and flowers to raise funds. Tenyson suggested that we should buy the lady a flower. “It will make her feel better,” he said. I was amazed that he’d come up with this sweet idea. So we went over to the flower seller and asked her if we could buy a flower for the lady to cheer her up. “Just take it,” she replied. “I can’t take your money for such a wonderful gesture.”By now paramedics(急救人员) had arrived, and were attending to the injured woman. As we walked up to her, my son became intimidated by all the blood and medical equipment. He said he was just too scared to go up to her.Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband and told him, “My son was very upset for your wife and wanted to give her this flower to make her feel better.”At that, the old man started crying and said, “Thank you so much, you have a wonderful son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”The man then bent down and gave his wife the flower, telling her who it was from. Though badly hurt and shaken, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with love in her eyes and gave him a little smile.5.What dose the author intend to tell us?A. One can never be too careful.B. Having spent his career decoding the universe and even experienced weightlessness, he was urging the continuation of space exploration — for humanity’s sake. The 76-year-old Hawking once said he did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our fragile (脆弱的)planet.”The scientist made the remarks before an audience of doctors, nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory that’s focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease.Hawking was diagnosed (诊断) with the neurological disorder 55 years ago while studying at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became depressed and at first didn’t see a point in finishing his PhD. But he continued to devote himself to his studies.“If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way,”he said. Famous for his work on black holes and the origins of the universe, Hawking was also well-known for bringing abstract physics concepts to the masses through his best-selling books.Hawking survived longer than most people with Lou Gehrig’s disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord(脊髓) that control the muscles. People gradually have more and more trouble breathing and moving as muscles weaken and waste away. There’s no cure and no way to reverse (倒转) the disease’s progression. Few people with ALS live longer than a decade.Hawking received around-the-clock care, could only communicate by twitching his cheek, and relied on a computer mounted to his wheelchair to convey his thoughts in a unique robotic monotone.Despite his diagnosis, Hawking remained active. In 2007, he floated like an astronaut on an aircraft that created weightlessness by making parabolic(抛物线) dives. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do.”he said.12. Why did Hawking remark that humans will not survive another 1,000 years?A. To warn the earth may not be suitable to live on.B. To make his theory on cosmology widely accepted.C. The Exumas, BahamasBTwo monks of a great master were walking in the garden of the master’s house. They were asked to walk every day, from dawn to dusk. The walking was a kind of meditation(冥想). They cannot sit in the day--the legs need a little movement and the blood needs a little circulation(循环).They both wanted to ask for the permission of the master to sit down, so they both decided, “Tomorrow. At the most, he will say no, but we are going to ask. And it doesn’t seem such an impolite act to sit in the garden.”The next day they met in the garden. One was furious(狂怒的)---because the other was sitting---and he said, “What happened? I also asked, but he simply flatly refused and said no. An d you are sitting! Are you not going against his orders?”The other one said, “But he has said yes to me.”“This looked very unjust,” the first said, “I will go and immediately inquire(询问)why he said no to me and yes to you.”The other one said, “Wait a minute. Please tell me what you had asked.” The first said, “What I had asked? I had asked a simple thing. ‘Can I sit while meditating?’ He said, ‘No!’ and he looked veryangry.”The other started laughing and said, “Now I know what is the matter. I asked, ‘Can I meditate while sitting?’ He said, ‘Yes.’”It all depends. Just a little difference and life is totally something else. Asking “Can I sit while meditating?” is just ugly. But asking “Can I meditate while sitting?” is perfectly okay. Good! At least you will be meditating.Life is an empty canvas(油画布), and one has to be very artistic about it.24. As Brazilian landowners cut down rainforests to make room for profitable plantations(营利性的种植园)and cattle grounds, he struggled to bring the jungles of his childhood back to life.“When I was a child, the peasants(农民)cut down the trees to make grasslands and charcoal, and the water dried up and did not come back,” he told the reporters, “I thought: ‘Water is valuable, no one makes water and the population will not stop growing. What is going to happen? We are going to run out of water.”With only some donkeys and a small team of hired workers, Antonio Vicente set about bringing back the forest to his land. What started out as a weekend hobby soon became a permanent(永久的)way of life, and Antonio recalls often spending whole days and nights in his young jungle, surrounded by rats and foxes, and eating banana sandwiches for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Over the last 40 years, he has planted an estimated 50,000 trees on his 31-hectare land, which now make up a small but unique area of rainforest, and a haven for wildlife. As the forest grew, the water returned, and Antonio says that there are now over 20 water sources on his land that were no longer there when he bought it. Then the animals started making a home there. Today, the forest is alive with the sounds of birds and insects living there, and more species are settling in every year. “There are toucans(巨嘴鸟), all kinds of birds, squirrels, lizards, and even the boars are returning,” 83-year-old Vicente says, “If you ask me who my family are, I would say all this right here, each one of these that I planted from a seed.”28. He wrote a history of chocolate, lecturing schoolchildren to commit such dates to memory (熟记), such as 1928 when “Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut Bar popped up on the scene”, saying. “Don’t bother with the Kings and Queens of England. All of you should learn these dates instead. Perhaps the Headmistress(女校长)will see from now on that it becomes part of the major teaching in this school.”According to Dahl, the Golden Years of Chocolate were 1930-1937. Near Repton was a Cadbury chocolate factory. Every so often, Cadbury would send each schoolboy a sampler(样品)box of new chocolates to taste and grade. They were using the students---“the greatest chocolate bar experts in the world to test out their new inventions. This was when Dahl’s imagination took flight. He pictured factories with inventing rooms with pots of chocolate and fudge(软糖)and “all sorts of other delicious fillings bub bling away on the stoves”.“It was lovely dreaming those dreams…when I was looking for a plot for my second book for children. I remembered those little cardboard boxes(纸盒)and the newly invented chocolates inside them, and I began to write a book called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”For the record, Roald Dahl did not like chocolate cake or chocolate ice cream.
