First, look for color. Some minerals are light in color,....Some minerals shine brightly. Others may look smooth. Still others may have shining luster, like the inside of some seashells.Third, look for how the mineral breaks apart.

注意上下文中相关联的词例and if the teacher uses it carefully, the children can understand it.

MuzakThe next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? 71 It’s similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same。

That’s because this music was especially designed to relax you,or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don’t evenrealize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway。

Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators。

But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak"。

About one—third of the people in America listen to ”Muzak” everyday. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. 72If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs。

According to a report from the United Nations, more than half of the world's major rivers have serious water loss and are polluted. The Yellow River, the world's fifth longest river, watered some of the oldest farms on earth. But now it has a serious problem. 6. In most of the past 35 years, it didn't reach the sea.The Nile in Egypt, running 6, 650km, is the longest river in the world. 7. Now it is down to 2 billion or so. Australia's Murray River reaches the sea only every other year. One fifth of America's Rio Grande has no water, either.8. Mostly it's damming(筑坝) and global warming that make rivers dry.9. Now about 45,000 of them lie across the world's rivers. But for many people in the world, it's a different story.More than one billion people (that's about one in six of all the people living on Earth) are not able to get clean water. And over 2.4 billion people don't have flush toilets. 12. Because of the polluted water, six thousand children die every day.Surprisingly, only 2.5% of all the water on Earth is freshwater, in rivers, lakes and underground.13. And almost more than half of the freshwater is frozen in ice at the north and south poles. So, as less than 1% of the world's freshwater is usable for us, it's really important that we take care of it!14. So it made 2003 the International Year of Freshwater. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals. _____46_____Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?___47___They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed. For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent; above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball, where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance. To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调) their actions. ______48______In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is, for example, trying to gain a high personal point total, he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team’s performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told, “There is no I in TEAM.” ___49___Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 2 For example, the first letters of "My elephant eats too many eels"spell out the hidden message "Meet me."3 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. As is known to all, many things can be measured in terms of data. Sometimes data can indeed tell the truth. With the help of data we can easily know the price of a can of Coke in the supermarket or the result of a football match. 1 What is more important, is that data seem to be fairer than words and statements. If the data are true, we don’t have to worry about being cheated. Nowadays, as lies exist in the world, data are expected to tell the truth. Therefore, many of us would rather believe data.On the other hand, if we judge things only by data from the so-called specific research, aren’t we a little too narrow-minded? Many people often treat the so-called specific data unwisely just to make sure that they are making the right decisions. 2 For example, how can you tell that he or she isn’t a good student just because he or she doesn’t get high marks in the final examination? 3For example, the degree of your feeling happy in your life, the depth of love between you and your friends, and the faith you have in your country. We can only feel them in our hearts but can never express them in data. There is no doubt that analyzing the exact data is important to the assessment of an actual event. But data should be dealt with wisely. We often get wrong data which mislead us. 4 Remember, data have no feeling but we humans have.
