Unit 5Section ASoftware Design (软件设计)Design is defined in [IEEE610.12-90] as both “the process of defining the architecture, components, interfaces, and other characteristics of a system or component ” and “the result of that process.” Viewed as a process, software design is the software engineering life cycle activity in which software requirements are analyzed in order to produce a description of the software ’s internal structure that will serve as the basis for itsconstruction. More precisely, a software design (the result) must describe the software architecture -- that is how software is decomposed and organized into components -- and the interfaces between those components. It must also describe the components at a level of detail that enable their construction. Software design plays an important role indeveloping software: it allows software engineers to produce various models that form a kind of blueprint of the solution to be implemented. We can analyze and evaluate these models to determine whether or not they will allow us to fulfill the variousrequirements. We can also examine and evaluate various alternative solutions and trade-offs . Finally, we can use the resulting models to plan thesubsequent development activities, in addition to using them as input and the starting point of construction and testing. In a standard listing of software life cycleprocessed such as IEEE/EIA 12207 Software Life Cycle Processes [IEEE 12207.0-96], software design consists of two activities that fit between software requirements analysis and software construction:Software architectural design (sometimes called top level design): describing software ’s top-level structure and organization and identifying the various components.Software detailed design: describing eachcomponent sufficiently to allow for its construction.General StrategiesSoftware often-cited examples of general strategies useful in the design process aredivide-and-conquer and stepwise refinement,top-down vs. bottom-up strategies, data abstraction and information hiding, use of heuristics, use of patterns and pattern languages, use of an iterative and incremental approach.Function-Oriented (Structured) DesignThis is one of the classical methods of software design, where decomposition centers on identifying the major software functions and then elaborating and refining them in a top-down manner. Structured design is generally used after structured analysis, thus producing, among other things, data flow diagrams and associated process descriptions. Researchers have proposed various strategies (for example, transformation analysis, transaction analysis) and heuristics (for example, fan-in/fan-out, scope of effect vs. scope of control) to transform a DFD into a software architecture generally represented as a structure chart.Object-Oriented DesignNumerous software design methods based on objects have been proposed. The field has evolved from the early object-based design of the mid-1980s (noun=object; verb=method; adjective=attribute) through OO design, where inheritance and polymorphism play a key role, to the field of component-based design, where meta-information can be defined and accessed (through reflection, for example). Although OO design’s roots stem fromthe concept of data abstraction, responsibility-driven design has also been proposed as an alternative approach to OO design.Data-Structure-Centered DesignData-structure-centered design (for example, Jackson, Warnier-Orr) starts from the data structures a program manipulates rather than from the function it performs. The software engineer first describes the input and output data structures (using Jackson’s structure diagrams, for instance) andthen develops the program ’s control structure based on these data structure diagrams. Various heuristics have been proposed to deal with special cases -- for example, when there is a mismatch between the input and output structures.Component-Based Design (CBD)A software component is an independent unit, having well-defined interfaces and dependencies that can be composed and deployed independently, Component-based design addresses issues related to providing, developing, and integrating such components in order to improve reuse .Other MethodsOther interesting but less mainstreamapproaches also exist: formal and rigorous methodand transformational methods.。

Unit 5

Student Essay 13Understanding Modern Art1 Many people complain that modern art is too abstract to understand. Many others can’t stand it or even consider it rubbish.2 In fact, modem art doesn’t tell but express. The composers just want to express the feeling but not to show you the fact. Modern art describes the world in a special lang uage, which can’t be translated. The only thing that you can do is to taste it, to touch it with your heart and then, you’ll discover another world in it. The new world is fantastic. Believe it or not, some ridiculous figures and several colors mixed together can express the anarchy of modern society exactly [the modern society exactly].3 Those composers have really extraordinary eyes. They observe their surroundings in strange ways. Those so-called sensitive individuals alwaystake interest in the strong perspective, the uncommon angle, the odd spaces and the contrast of light and shade, most of which are tiny things and ignored everywhere. That’s why people have the sense of strangeness and think modern art an unreasonable thing. Take Henry Moore for instance, the goal of his composition was to create abstract form and emphasized [emphasize] the quality of nature and put human being secondary[put human beings as secondary]. As a result, many people can’t read his mind and regard his sculptures as strange stones.4 Modern artists are misunderstood very often. Many people think them cheating and knowing nothing about art. Therefore their composition means to put some element[elements or parts] together and make something that nobody understands even themselves [including themselves]. That’s quite far from the truth. Modern artist [To be a modern artist] is a tough job. They have to [He has to] know how to observe, how to create, how to refine, [and] how to express. They must master how to arrange the picture, how to choose the materials that can express best. Barbara Insalaco, an American artist, she does lots of work[did lots of work] during the course of composition. She photographs [photographed] the attractive things and then developed the film in a special way and makes [made] them unclear photos. This step helps her not seduce by [not to be seduced by] the unimportant details. After that, she draws [drew] sketches referring to [according to] the photos. Then, she makes [made] hundreds of changes, tries[tried] dozens of materials and at last, makes [made] the final decision.5 Indeed, modern art is a complicated procedure, it has its own order. People don’t understand it because they just see the result but don’t know the course. If more and more people walk into the background of modern art, change the way they thinking [the way they think] modern art, modern art will change them too.

But it was unlikely for a layperson like Wheatley to know that there was a subdivision of “valveclinic ” and which one was the right one for him.Fortunately, there is no “ Mitral Valve Clinic ” , “Aortic Valve Clinic ” or even “Valve Clinic ” in the real world. The author makesthem up as a good example to show how unn ecessarily complicated andhow confusing moder n medical scie nee has become.(4) One sentence can acco unt for all those referrals: “ Always best tolet the expert han dle the problem in his own field. ” I thi nk thequotation might be part of the Iong-term professional training theyhave received before they become doctors. Therefore I put the blame on the unn ecessary branching of moder n medic ine scie nee, not on the doctorsthemselves. They are trained in this way. It ' s not theirirresponsibility or sth. Actually this article helps meto develop someempathy for the doctors in past newsreports about doctors asking their patients to do a thorough checkup before making their diagnoses. I used to think, like what the reporters led us to believe, that they were just trying to make more money. But this article throws new light on those cases. NowI can see why the doctors think it reas on able and eve n n ecessary to do such checkups. They are trained in this way.(5) Most of the terms and jargons are difficult to understand. The author eve n madeup some words, usually very difficult and long words. Theeffect is well achieved. The reader can literally sense the feelings of awe, con fusi on and perplexity that Wheatley must have felt at the flow of those in comprehe nsible, professi on al, sole mn ly-uttered jarg ons. In some specialized fields like medici ne, la nguage is used as a tool to establish an unbalaneed power structure in which lay people rema in in apowerless and un derprivileged status. The author issen sitive eno ugh to recog nize it in the real life, and wise eno ugh toexaggerate the jarg ons a bit so as to make them more recog ni zable tohis reader.(6) I read this short story as a satire on moder n medici ne scie nee: itis evoIving into a dead end, which sacrifices efficiency for expertise and fails to provide the cure it promises.(7) Lack of efficiency, unnecessary branching, relying too much ontheories and equipme nts, too meticulous in maki ng a diag no sis …Stude nts are en couraged to come up with ways to han dle the problems.Possibly more reading of literary works might help. Haha.(8) I agree thatordinary people usually remain powerless in the unbalaneedrelati on ship betwee n experts and lay people. They are deprived of thediscourse power, unable to utter their own opinions or to keep things under their own control. What makes things worse, due to the monopoly of kno wledge, they not only lack con fide nee in their own judgme nts,but also, in most cases, do fail to make sen sible judgme nts. 2. Weneed just a few more studies to cure you.(4) The doctor realized what Wheatley wan ted to say.(5) A few hours later the doctors were examining him by ways of thumping, photograph ing and liste ning.(6) The doctors agreed that he had to go through those checkups to ruleout possibilities of certain diseases.3. The Picture of Dorian Gray
• The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian (whimsically) expresses a desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than he. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts. The portrait serves as a reminder of the effect each act has upon his soul, with each sin displayed as a disfigurement of his form, or through a sign of aging. • The Picture of Dorian Gray is considered a work of classic gothic fiction with a strong Faustian theme.
