13、Some people think that the debate (辩论) about school uniforms is just about whether students look cool. In fact, this problem is connected with other topics, such as student performance (表现), money, and personal choice. The school uniform debate is very important to parents, teachers, and school officials—and to students, too! Many students argue (争论) that school uniforms would save their parents' money. According to Nahla, an eighth-grader, "Kids whose families don't have a lot of money wouldn't be teased for their unfashionable clothes." Besides, some students think that uniforms would help them give much attention to learning. "I think it's a great idea.
Wearing uniforms would teach students that schoolwork is more important than looking good," argues tenth-grader, Heba. Others believe that school uniforms would help students study better. In the words of a twelfth-grader named Aziza, "If all students have to wear the same uniform, they will try to impress others with their schoolwork and grades, not their clothes." Some students are against school uniforms. They argue that uniforms would cost their parents more money. "Uniforms are expensive and can only be worn at school. My parents would still have to buy me other clothes to wear on weekends and after school," explains ninth-grader, Sherine. According to a twelfth-grader named Susan, "School uniforms don't allow personal choice." She feels that uniforms don't allow students to be creative or express their own decisions about what to wear. Finally, many students like eleventh grader Reema say that uniforms are uncomfortable. "Students like to wear comfortable clothes," she says.
In a word, there are strong arguments on both sides of the school uniform debate. Whateverthe result is, one thing is important: before making a decision about whether to require uniforms, school officials must consider the opinions of everyone—especially the students.

You never know who these people may be: your classmate, neighbor, teacher, long-lost friend or even a real stranger. But you know that every moment they will influence your life in some serious ways.

Bees have very small brains. Still, they are very intelligent. Scientists at Queen Mary University of London did an experiment with bees. It shows that bees can learn something new to gain reward(奖励). Then they can teach other bees to do the same. And that’s not all they can do. Olli Luokola was one of the scientists who worded on the study. He said that the be es did not just copy what they saw. Th ey actually improved on what they were learning. “This is of course amazing for
small-brained insects,” he said. He added that it is even harder for humans to improve on something they learned by copying others.
For the experiment, the bees had to move a yellow ball into the center of a platform(平台). First, the scientists showed the bees how to do it. When the ball got into the center, the scientists added sugar water to reward the subjects. The bees learned that the rewards came when the ball was put in the right place. They got better and better at moving the balls. Then, they got more of the reward. After a while, they began to move the balls by themselves.
The scientists tried something else. They put the trained bees on a platform with bees that were not trained.
After watching the trained bees once, the untrained bees learned how to do it too. They didn’t just copy the behavior, though. The new bees also improved on the action; They chose balls closer to themselves. All brains-in people and people-have neurons(神经元) let you think. Scientist Reese Halter says bees are “highly intelligent creatures,” even though they have far fewer neutrons than humans. Halter explained that bees talk to each other with their bodies, but not like what we do. They use their bodies instead of words. They butt heads, bump into each other and they even dance. Luokola said scientists used to think that the smaller the brain, the less intelligent the animal! But this study proves(证明)that is not true.

A.a medical program B.a scientific test
C.an animal story D.a biology expert
2.According to paragraph 1, which of the following is TRUE about study?
A.It helps humans to get better at something by copying.
B.It teaches bees to copy what they saw and do the same.
C.It shows bees can learn something new to gain a reward.
D.It trains the bees how to move a ball to the right place.
3.Paragraph 2 mainly talks about______.
A.what kind of balls bees moved
B.why scientists help bees to get a reward
C.where bees moved the balls
D.how bees are trained to move the balls
4.From paragraph 3, we can learn that scientists______.
A.have always believed that bees are highly intelligent
B.explain that bees talk to each other in body languages
C.have questioned whether the study’s results are corrected
D.explain that bees are unable to learn from one another
5.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.Bees are very intelligent insects though they have tiny brains.
B.Bees can talk by bumping into one another and even dancing.
C.Bees can copy a behavior they see but hardly improve upon it.
D.Bees are smart enough to get a reward without moving a ball.

17、On May 2, 2012, Ashok Gadgil became the winner of the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Global Innovation (全球创新奖). Each year, the honor is given to an inventor who has made a big difference in the lives of people in developing countries. Gadgil is a professor and physicist at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent thirty years helping people in need. His inventions have helped more than 100 million people around the world. “I chose to focus on problems where my knowledge of science could help,” Gadgil said.
In the 1990s, Gadgil designed his first life-saving invention after more than 10,000 people died from Bengal cholera (孟加拉霍乱) because of the clean water crisis (危机) in India. His invention uses ultraviolet light to kill deadly disease-carrying germs (细菌) from drinking water. It costs just one cent to clean five liters of water (about 21 cups). So far, the invention has provided safe drinking water for more than five million people in India and other developing countries.
Gadgil’s another important invention is the Berkeley-Darfur Stove (炉具). The long and violent war in Darfur, Sudan, has
caused many people to move to foreign countries and live in refugee camps (难民营). They are given food aid. But people still have to travel a long distance five times a week to gather firewood to cook meals. This can be dangerous because of street violence in the area. To avoid danger, some spend much of their money used to feed their families buying firewood.
The stove Gadgil created cuts fuel usage by 55%. That means people wouldn’t have to leave the camps to find firewood as often. The invention also helps to save homes more than $300 a year. About 125,000 people and their families have been helped.
As a professor, Gadgil encourages his students, “Be optimistic (乐观的) when you try a hard problem,” he says. “It’s when you solve a large problem that you can have a big influence on the world.”
