Alex Haley was first sent off to college at the age of 15. At the age of 17 he returned home to inform his father of his withdrawal from Alcorn State University. Simon Haley felt that Alex needed discipline and growth and convinced his son to enlist in the military when he turned 18. In 1939, Alex Haley began his 20-year service with the Coast Guard.

Alex Haley (艾里克斯.哈利 )
American biographer, scriptwriter, and novelist, whose most famous work is ROOTS, a publishing phenomenon(出版业的奇迹) and international bestseller. Alex Haley was born in New York, his father was a teacher of agriculture at several Southern colleges.
He said that three groups of people lived in every village. First were those you could see - walking around, eating, sleeping, and working. Second were the ancestors, whom Grandma Yaisa had now joined. “And the third people - who are they?” asked Kunta. “The third people,” said Omoro, “are those waiting to be born.”

Roots was also made into a popular television miniseries that year. The film reached a record-breaking 130 million viewers when it was serialized on television. The book woke up an interest in genealogy, particularly among African-Americans.
In 1921 the family moved to the small town of Henning, Tennessee. Alex lived there for five years. Alex‘s mother taught in the local elementary school. She died when Alex was 10 and his father remarried two years later.

After his retirement from the Coast Guard, Haley began his writing career and eventually became a senior editor for Reader's Digest.
Roots
Haley became famous with the publication of the novel ROOTS. In it Haley traced his ancestry back to Africa and covered seven generations, starting from his ancestor, Kunta Kinte. Roots was published in 37 languages and Haley won a Special Award for it in 1977 from the Pulitzer Board. Roots emphasized that African Americans have a long history and that not all of that history is lost.
